1603 install - missing string

Question

So I'm struggling with a 1603 when I try to install 7.1.1 and posted earlier about that problem. Here's maybe another clue:
I found an old iTunes install CD that I got with an iPod mid-2006.
When I try to install from the disk I get a
String PRODUCT_NAME was not found in string table
pop up message, then the install finally fails with another popup:
Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040706,
Descrption: Object Reference not set
Setup will now terminate
Any ideas anyone?

the InstallShield engine upgrade might help also with the 1603 on installing the 7.1.1.5.
although the iTunes 7.0.x and 7.1.x installers are not InstallShield-based, previous versions (like the one you're getting the string errors on) were. so a missing or damaged InstallShield version 11 engine can compromise a 7.0.x or 7.1.x install by playing silly buggers with the new installer's attempt to uninstall the older (non-version-7) version of iTunes.
(thinking that's plausible as a cause for your 1603, because the 7.1.x and 7.0.x installers typically don't return that error message number ... they just say "fatal error" instead. so the prime candidate for what's returning it would be the previous non-version-7 installation of iTunes.)
