160G Classic Constantly Restarting - Using Linux

Hi all,
I got one of the 160G iPod's a while ago, and everything is up to date. I installed Ubuntu Linux on my computer last night, and I'm now having problems with my iPod. I put a few text documents into the 'Notes' folder just by browsing the iPod and copying them into there. I also put a folder in there with a couple of .exe files that had to be transferred to another computer, could they be causing my iPod to constantly restart?
I can turn it on, go through the menus for a couple of clicks, then it just shuts off and restarts, so I let the batteries die last night (I thought it would help), but it still does the same thing. I found a topic about this, but they were using Mac, so I was told to make my own topic. I am also fairly new to Linux, so anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated. If it helps at all, I have Wine Windows Emulator installed and it's working fine.
Also just to add, is there a version of iTunes that will run with Linux/Ubuntu? I searched the Ubuntu forums, but the latest they said that will is version 7.4. I tried installing the Windows version using Wine, but it didn't work, and the Mac version's '.exe' just won't start on Linux.
Thanks!

  • Bought a used 160G classic

I picked up a 160G classic from the local pawn shop today. I have started resynching with my music libary with no problems. My question is though how do I rename it? Also the date and time it displays are not correct, how do I fix this? Thanks  in advance...

    To rename
In iTunes Device pane on the left - click on the iPod name, then change the name to whatever you want.

You can change the DateTime in the iPod Menu
    Settings->Date & Time

  • 160 GB iPod constantly restarting

I hadn't updated the firmware on my iPod for a while since it's formatted for Windows but I use Mac. After installing it my iPod would just keep restarting. After two hours I unplugged it, restarted it, but nothing worked. I can put it in disk mode and the computer will see it then. All files seem to be intact so I don't think it's a harddrive problem.

Hi, sorry to "jack" this post in a way, but I'm having the same problems. My iPod 160G Classic is constantly restarting, and after I had only put a few text documents into the 'Notes' folder on the HDD. I am also using Linux (Ubuntu) instead of Mac, so is there any program that is compatible with Linux that can help with this problem?
EDIT: I'm new to Linux and such, I just installed it last night, but any help wil be greatly appreciated.

  • Completely random restarts (windows + linux)

    Hey,
I put together a system (see sig) for a friend, anyway they started complaining about random restarts using winxp (with or without either service pack). Cutting a long story short, we RMA'd the motherboard, got a replacement, and the problem persisted.
Basically this is a list of things that has been observed to happen
    1) Randomly reboots during winxp install (not connected to the internet, harddrive virus free did a complete scan and alternated b/n linux / windows installs, ie filesystem changed -> no virus)
    2) Reboots under windows randomly, can be when surfing the net, ripping cds (this is the best test to make it happen), or just sitting idle (went to get a drink and it had done it). I tried to disable the "Automatic restart on fatal error" in the advanced settings thing, that did nothing, so im fairly certain that its a hardware issue after that.
    3) Reboots during Gentoo Install (I figured I should stress test it), the reboots occur at different places depending on the settings changed, and detailed below, but inevitably it always reboots.
    4) Occasionally winxp will fail to load, or givea a BSOD before rebooting, but this has happened maybe 5 times in hundreds of random restarts, the error messages are not in reference to anything in particular, nor could I garuntee the ability to get a copy of one to show you.
I spent most of yesterday digging around these forums reading suggestions etc...
The following is a list (i took notes) of what I have tried (this is long I know, im sorry)
    1) Different PSU
Originally the PSU was the stock standard that came with the sonata http://www.antec.com/specs/true380_spe.html which at 380W seemed a little low (this was before reading forum posts), so replaced it with the one in the sig -- Not a PSU problem.
    2) Different RAM
Figured since a second replacement board had the same problem it could be the RAM, tried RAM from my machine which I know is working perfectly, reboot as normal. Hmm so I did a memtest86 scan on the memory left it running 48hrs, that lets memtest86 loop about 7 times (for anyone interested) there was not a single error. -- Not a RAM defect.
    Started reading forums here
    3) Different Harddrive / Optical Drive
Tried a 120G sata maxtor drive (which I know works), reboots persisted.
Tried a DVD-ROM, from my machine, reboots persisted.
    4) Measured the voltage with multimeter, all voltages were within 1% of the spec.
    5) Put some thermal (arctic silver 5) compound on the cpu / heatsink, but the temperature under stress test never goes above 51 degrees anyway. Not at all out side the operational conditions for a P4 3.0.
    6) Ram Timings / placement
If I leave as SPD, reboots occur more quickly, setting timings to 2.5-3-3-7 burst 8 gives me longer until the reboot occurs, however it still eventually occurs. I have tried running the ram in single channel mode (with both sticks in the same channel), dual channel mode 1 3 and 2 4 have been tested, and by only having one stick in at a time (
    7) Ram voltage
I kept alternating b/n SPD and the above timings as I moved the RAM voltage 2.60 - 2.65 - 2.70 - 2.75 (I haven't gone any higher yet as thats the red zone, ie 2.80), the best times I experienced for a gentoo install were with 2.70 / 2.75 however after 20 to 25 minutes of compiling the machine restarts. I couldnt get the machine to restart ripping cds on this setting, but thats probably because I lost interest in ripping over and over again after the 5th time, I did get to 10th rip once, only to have it restart.
    8) Clock Frequencies
Tried setting FSB to 201 (as some threads recommend), didnt help. Tried setting RAM speed at 266, 333, 400, and auto, the lower the speed the longer until a reboot, but only a minute or two is gained by 266 over 400. All this is done on the NORMAL (meaning SLOW on older boards) setting.
    10) Video card
Originally there was just some old PCI card I had laying around in the machine (lack of money), however now (see sig), either way reboots occured, the video card was my 3rd suspect, motherboard, ram, video, psu, .... etc...
    Thats it.
Now, I saw some people commenting (when I was reading the threads) that they wondered if this batch of boards was bodgey, no one seemed to want to agree, however after trying suggestions from over 100 threads (do a search for random reboot if you dont believe me) and not actually getting any success, and having had this happen over TWO of the SAME board, im really beginning to think that is the case. Some of the search results were PSU based, granted, so lets knock off 50% that leaves about 50 cases of this incident which haven't actually been resolved.
Im not playing blame game, it just seems very likely to me, but if someone gives me a solution that works, ill appologise profusely, and go and buy the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that ive been wanting -- but to scared from this situation, to actually buy.
This problem is remarkably similar to Random PC reboot this, except im not able to actually produce the windows errors as noted at the top.
    So... Please HELP !!!!!

1st of all, kudos to you mate, now this is the proper way to ask for help!
but looks like you've tried everything other than hitting it with great force with a piece of 4 by2.
only thing i can ask is if you've tried increasing the vAGP in bios, this doesnt really increase the voltage to your agp (well, it does) but more to the point, it increases the voltage to the motherboard chipset. you've mentioned that youve put as5 on the cpu, it might be worth trying a clean and application under the northbridge too (though they do coat it with some cr@p so much its a bit of work sometimes getting it all off)..
another thing, though this shouldnt help, is to try increasing the vCore to the cpu just a tad, most intel boards' voltages vary a fair bit, some say its due to a special functionalities withing the processor itself, but most say that this hasnt been implemented.
other than that, best of luck to ya
p.s. or you could go get a cheap 865 board as a replacement, i wouldnt upgrade to a64 yet with nforce4 (nvidia) + xpress200 (ati) mobos just around the corner as well as 90nm a64 processors with sse3 instuctions too

  • Satellite L750 turns on and off by itself using Linux

Today I have experienced some strange behaviour on my notebook. It unexpectedly shuts down, after showing a dialog window saying "Your computer will shut down in 60 seconds". And then, when I turn it back on, it just shuts down before booting and it turns back on by itself after a few seconds.
It does not overheat, the CPU temp is normally between 50-60C (I constantly monitor it using Conky). Also, someone told me to upgrade the BIOS, so I did it, but the problem still persists. I have also tried to replace the RAM and run a memcheck, but everything looks fine on the memory side.
I use linux, and had a look on "/var/log/syslog", but I'm not sure I know exactly what to look for. The messages logged before shutting down don't seem to describe anything suspicious.
I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but it seems the problem is more hardware related and I would like to investigate what causes it to shut down so randomly. The same thing happens on Windows, but there's no warning before shutting down.
My notebook is a Toshiba Satellite L750-11w.
Any clues would be highly appreciated.

    >I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but it seems the problem is more hardware related and I would like to investigate what causes it to shut down so randomly. The same thing happens on Windows, but there's no warning before shutting down.
You checked the notebook functionality using Windows system but did you use the Toshiba recovery disk and did you test it using factory settings?
Im wondering about the message: your computer will shut down in 60 seconds
If it would be an hardware problem, then the notebook would shut down without any warning messages.
Therefore I assume there must be an software issue I guess some setting triggers this automatic shut down.
But to be honest i have no idea what setting could be
If you think its hardware related problem, I guess only an notebook technician would be able to help you.

  • Constantly Restarting Pearl

    Hi,
I am hoping someone can give me some help solving my problem. I have a Blackberry Pearl. Yesterday, it started to constantly restart itself. Some times it will run fine. Then it will shutoff, and just have a long slow pulsing of the red light. Then it will start to boot to the white screen and keep shutting off. Then eventually, it will start working again. Any ideas on what is going on?
Edit: Also, I think there is something funky going on with the trackball, when pressed, it acts like the 1 key was pressed. Any thoughts?

  • BT Cloud constantly restarting after being updated

MY BT cloud app is now constantly restarting since it was updated a few days ago.
The only way to stop this is to enter Task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and end the task. I can then restart it and it all come up as it should for a few minutes then its back to constantly stopping and restarting.
Ive had to stop it from starting now when PC starts as it gets in the way of the normal PC use.
Ive saved teh programs logs so if someone wnats to see those Ill happily send them over
Hope there some help for this.
    Solved!

    Hi SummermoonUK and SueL,
I am sorry to hear that are having problems with BT Cloud. If you take a look at BT Cloud says "Could not connect to the service. Check your network connection" that should help with the issue.
    Thanks

  • Ipod 160g classic issues.

Hi Please help.  I have a Ipod 160g classic. Ive been on the phone today to apple support for over an hour and a half to try and resolve this issue and its still happening.  I am trying to transfer music from my windows 7 PC to my Ipod and it keeps freezing after transfering a few diffrent albums tracks. Im having to switch off my PC and start again as it locks the whole PC up. I have the latest software on the Ipod and the latest itunes which I have unintsalled and reinstalled this afternoon and it is still happening.  this issue has only seem to have started since downloading the latest version of Itunes. Is anybody else experincing this issue.  Thanks

I have audio books and have been informed by Apple Support that in order to keep the audio books in the audio book folder of my iPod and I have to have the iPod set to disk use mode and therefore cannot have iTunes and my iPod sunc. In other words I have to drag and drop new items into my iPod. This is time consuming when I add new songs to iTune.
That's nonsense - use Sync with selected playlists and it works fine, although there are a few issues you certainly don't need to use disk mode or manual management.
With iTunes 8.x you have the option to tell iTunes to treat any audio file as an audiobook. Simply select the tracks, *Get Info.*, then on the options tab set *Media kind* to Audiobook. You can also set options to *Remember playback position* and *Skip when shuffling*.
Assuming, however, that the books consist of more than one file you may have problems if you plan to listen to them on an iPod. The Audiobooks feature was originally designed for books that have been stitched up into a single file and hasn't been updated to reflect the changes that make multi-track audiobooks easy to work with in iTunes. There are tools for creating iPod-friendly audiobooks for which Aldo on Audiobooks is probably the best reference. Personally I don't bother with the extra effort and just have an "Audiobooks" playlist folder containing sub-folders for each author and within these playlists for each audiobook.
Having established that the files are of kind Audiobook, they will then only show in the Audiobook section of the iPod plus any playlists they are explicity included in. The files don't show anywhere else in Music, i.e. Coverflow, Albums etc.

  • 160G Classic and Alpine iD-X001...No album art!

Just purchased the 160G Classic...everything working fine except for one hiccup...when I connect it to my Alpine deck (iDA-X001) the album art does not show.  It worked seamlessly with my 80G 5th Gen. iPod, but I could really use the 160 gigs!  Is Apple going to release a firmware upgrade to fix this?  Although a minor detail, my OCD is coming out!  Help!  Don't want to take the Classic back!

I have just installed a Alipne iDA-X001 to work with my iPod 160Gb Classic it works fine other than no album art.
My ipod is a Mac OS X formatted iPod connected with the supplied Alpine USB cable. The iPod has "disk access enabled" I have read a post on ipodlounge that claims this is the solution but not for me.
I am going to do a complete restore and try again in the morning.
p.s the iPhone will not work when connected to the Alipnes USB cable the Alpine reports an error 2

That question is impossible to answer without more information. What troubleshooting steps have you performed? Did you try using another cable? Did you try using another USB port on the Mac? Did you reboot the Mac and reset the iPad? Have you tired restoring the iPad?

  • My computer is constantly restarting

Hello, my computer is constantly restarting.  It started four days after installing Mavericks.  It would restart with no advice and sometimes it gets into a restarting loop and restarts over and over.
Another symptom is that most of time,  when coming back from sleep, the screen would stay black, they keyboard is lit and responding but it need to be forced to shut down and restart in order to respond.
At the beginning I noticed that this happened when using Aperture, I had a big library so I made a new library and it worked fine for two days, after that it kept on restarting.  I don't if it's a software issue or a hardware issue, this is the panic log:

  • Phone constantly restarting with ios5+

I upgraded to ios5 from 4.3.3 and my phone is constantly restarting itself every few minutes. I have tried to restore it and restore it in DFU, both from a back up and a new phone and nothing seems to fix it. I have also redownloaded ios5 to see if it was a dodgy download. The only way I can stop it is to turn wifi off altogether. This will make the phone stable but it still might restart once or twice a day. I was hoping 5.0.1 might fix something but that didnt change anything either.
Is anyone else having these problems or knows of a fix?

When you set up the new phone did you set it up as "restore from an icloud backup" or did you set up the phone as a "new phone" and then signed in with your apple id? If you chose "restore from an ic,oud backup" then there might be something wrong with your icloud backup. You can try restoring the phone as "erase all contents and settings" and when it asks you how you're setting up your phone you can chose "set up as new iphone" and then sign in with your apple id and you should get your contact synced over at least. You can then go to the itunes store and app store to manually download your purchases. Or you can plug in your old phone to your computer and use itunes to "back up to my computer" and once that is done you can plug in your new phone to your computer and use itunes to "restore from a bckup". Hopefully that is more helpful.
Also, what exactly did the Apple Store say as to why they "couldn't help you"?

  • RV042 constantly restarts

Our Linksys RV042 [1.3.12.19-tm (Feb 13 2009 13:03:21)] has two (2) DSL modems connected to it, each with a static IP. For the past couple of weeks, it has been constantly restarting every 10-15 minutes. Load Balancing is ON but Enable Network Service Detection is OFF. If I switch it to Smart Link Backup, it works properly.
For the past year, it has worked with load balancing. Now it doesn't. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Not normally, only the power supply of the rv042 has these problems generally.
But I just found out that the reason why more than 10x rv042's had died was because they had used JACKCON capacitors.
So I dug up other dead/defunct stuff and found a labelprinter which had the same bad JACKCON capacitors.
JACKCON capacitors seem to be the worst as they only last for about a year.
I replaced them and voila, all was working again!!
So if the warranty of the '82 has expired, I personally would definetly check the voltage of the internal power supply for AC residuals.
Be aware that you have the full 115V AC in there!!

  • IOS 8.1.2 Location Services constantly being used

There is a bug with 8.1.2 and I am not sure where to report it.
Location services is constantly in use.
The System Services settings I disabled were apparently reenabled with the iOS 8.1.2 update and this is killing the battery on my iPad 3.
I have a solution but really this should not be happening in the first place so where do I log this bug?

You can see which app is using location services here: Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
Apps with a purple arrow next to them are using your location services.
