160gb classic,Playlists

Please tell me if I can do what I want. This is to rip my many cd's on to separate playlists according to music genre. ie: jazz, blues, rock, r&b, country... Then my plan is to play one playlist at a time and perhaps put on shuffle play. I just got my Cassic for Xmas and am a novice user.

You might not even need to do playlists for this. It sounds like you could just shuffle within a genre. On the ipod, try music->genres

  • 160Gb Classic Playlist Problems

I own a 160Gb iPod classic, and it has worked fairly well for me. I enjoy being able to store all of my 20000+ music library on one device, and I have spent a substantial amount of time creating playlists that make the music more accessible. My problems lies in my iPod's opening of playlists. It simply will not open the playlist folder. My ipod freezes nearly every time I try to open the playlist folder on my iPod. The only time I am able to open my playlists is immediately after I reset my iPod, and once I do get the playlist folder to open and play a playlist, the iPod freezes when trying to back out of the playlist. I have over 20 playlists in iTunes, some are smart playlists, while others are manually made mixes. My old 60Gb 5th generation iPod never had a problem opening any of my playlists. This problem is quite frustrating since resetting my ipod any time I want to listen to a playlist, or change a playlist it quite annoying since my iPod takes nearly 5 minutes to reset. Is anybody else having this issue? Is there any way around it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I"m not sure if this is any help, Steve, but . . . A new "feature" of the 160G Classic is that it calculates the number of songs in each playlist before actually displaying those lists. This doesn't happen within iTunes on our Macs, of course.
But when I select "Playlists" on my iPod, there is a 30+ second "pause" while the device calculates the contents of my lists. This, of course, LOOKS as if the iPod is frozen. It's NOT, but I am well aware that, in lieu of a 1.0.3 update, the more playlists I add, and the more songs I add to each one, the longer it will take to move from point to point.
IMHO, this calculation of playlist contents MUST be removed or, at least, made an option in order for our players to recapture their former speed and vigor.

  • Extra Playlists downloading to 160gb classic

I have had and iPod for several years now, so I know how to use iTunes and sync an iPod. I just purchased a 160gb classic and configured it to download only selected playlists with checked songs. However, it also downloads 5 additional playlists that I didn't select. I created a new playlist, moved the music into it, and changed my iPod to use the new one. It still downloads the others. It does, however, download the one I designate.
    Any idea what is heppening?

Nope, but it happens to me too.. I manage 4 iPods and I seem to get the odd extra playlist listed which is not selected to be copied. They're all smart playlists and are empty on the iPods they're not intended for. I've been able to remove them sometimes by switching to manual sync, deleting & switching back to auto again.

  • IPod 2007 160GB Classic Stuck on Apple Logo Reboot?

    Hello Hopefully somebody can help?
I have a iPod 2007 160GB Classic which is stuck on the apple logo reboot? I have tried everything posted on the similar topic below without success although I'm a windows user and not mac:-
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2609298?tstart=0
My Hard Drive Smart Data is:-
    Retracts: 336
    Reallocs: 6
    Pending Sectors: 4
    PowerOn Hours: 454
    Start/Stops: 2285
    Temp: Current 27c
    Temp: Min 0c
    Temp: Max 53c
I cannot restore, format even using HPUSBDISK?
Is it saveable or do I need a new hard drive?

I received mine today. Mine was Macintosh formatted already. No problems when I first connected. It took quite some time to sync my music library, but it completed successfully, with 13GB free. I 'ejected' the iPod, and I've spent a few minutes playing songs, trying the menus. No problems so far. Others have commented that the software is slow. I've not noticed any differences between 5G and the Classic. When you play a song it spends a second or so accessing the hard drive before playing the song, as my previous iPods have (most of my music is Lossless). There are images/icons on the right side of the screen in the settings section that appear after a slight delay when moving down through the menu - this perhaps gives the impression of feeling sluggish but it actually doesn't affect performance - you can scroll through the menu as quickly as you like, the sluggishness of the icons appearing is only cosmetic.
From my point of view, I'm pleased to say I've had none of the problems of it getting stuck on the Apple logo. When I first connected to the computer the Apple logo appeared for a moment, but then it changed to the 'syncing' circle animation and I've not seen the Apple logo screen since.
I think if yours keeps having the problem then I'd get a replacement. I'll certainly report back if I start getting problems - but so far it seems that everything is fine.
One last comment - I hadn't realised quite how different the software is. All of the menus, and the information displayed, the moving album art on the right side of the screen, the fact it shows how many songs are in each playlist etc is all very different to the 5G. The software on the classic is a very significant upgrade from the 5G - at first glance anyway.

  • 160GB Classic 50+ hours of playback

I'm not sure what other people have been getting for music playback times on a single charge, but I wanted to burn-in a new pair of headphones, so I hooked them up to my 160GB Classic, selected a playlist and then just let the iPod run at approximately 65% volume level until the battery gave out. Then I charged the iPod and repeated the process. Both times I got over 50 hours of continuous playback. Granted I wasn't using the menus and the screen for the most part was on the screen saving time/battery display mode, but its nice to see that it got well over the estimated 40 hours of playback.

This is taken from a FAQ covering headphone burn-in...
    "What is ‘burn in’?
When speaking of headphones, ‘burn in’ is the term used for the settling of the design parameters of the diaphragms into their intended state. The physical process is that the diaphragms loosen up through use and eventually reach a point that could be considered final. A similar situation is breaking in a new pair of shoes.
Why do people choose to burn in a new pair of headphones shortly after getting them?
Fresh out of the box, a pair of headphones may not sound as good as a well used pair, as the designers have intended. Often, people want their headphones to sound the way that they are intended as soon as possible. Most people don’t want to wait for weeks or months of regular use, so the choice is to expedite burn in by getting the process over with in the first week of ownership. Others choose to listen to their headphones as they change over the burn in period.
How do I burn in my new pair of headphones?
You can simply play music through them continuously. Some prefer using pure tones, sine wave sweeps, pink noise, or AM/FM static for burn in. Some recommend using bass heavy music. The method of burning in a headphone does not change depending on model or manufacturer."

  • Is there a song limit on 160gb classic

I have two 160GB classics - one I have had for several years but the buttons have worn and it doesn't respond as well.  Since Apple wouldn't repair it, I got a second.  Both exhibit the same behavior though that they will play a playlist no problem but when I select a song they will freeze (apple logo) and even after a reset will not play again until they are re-synced with my itunes library.  I have an extensive song collection and use the 128k bit  compression to get as many songs on as possible.  Right now I have 35,000+ songs with some space left on my ipods (both are set to sync all checked songs).  Restoring them has been tried but due to the compression, each takes about five days to delete and then reload all the songs.  I am willing to do that if i know it would work.  As I said however, I done that with both and still have the problem.  I don't want to have to create playlists to swap on and off because it defeats the purpose of the extra compression to put more tracks on.  Before I compressed to add the tracks, I had much more unchecked but I was maxed out on space so if I wanted to add something new I needed to remove something, hence the lower bit rate.  I think it may be a limitation in the software and whatever it uses for indexing and searching but I have seen no documentation talking about song limits.  Anyone with a similar experience and/or suggestions?

did you experience some crashing of the ipod as well? do you know how many separate items you had?

  • New 160gb Classic Help

Hi Guys, my first post and hopefully not my last.
I got a new 160gb classic last week, problem I have is that once the ipod is shut down and left for over an hour or so I have to carry out a reboot on it to start it up.
Visited an Apple Genius who reinstalled the software but I am still having the same problem and need to carry out a reboot all the time.
Has anyone had this issue before ?
Do I need to have my ipod replaced by Apple ?
    Thanks in advance
    Jon

Your iPod is definitely not working correctly, you could try restoring it yourself and see if that does any good. However if it continues to give you problems after restoring then contact Apple about a replacement under warranty.
Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

When I get my new computer, obviously I will download Itunes. My Ipod still has all the music on it and the external hard drive is ok.
I don't want to "erase" or lose any information when I sync with a new itunes that is "empty"
What are the steps? After I download Itunes and set the folder location to my external harddrive what is next? Will Itunes recognize my IPOD? Will it load the music/list from my ipd or external into itunes?
    Thanks in advance

  • HT1386 I cannot sync my iPod with the Playlists that I want. For example, I have all the songs in my classical Playlist checked but it doesn't appear in my iPod after syncing. Also I don't get an opportunity to review sync options.

I cannot sync my iPod with the Playlists that I want. For example, I have all the songs in my Classical Playlist checked, but after syncing it does not appear on my iPod. Also, there are no opportunities to change syncing options. None are listed in the left column of my iTunes screen.

    Hello Jefflo64,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with syncing music to your iPod.  For issues like this, I recommend resyncing the music to your iPod.
If you are syncing automatically, resync content to the iPod by unchecking "Sync Music" and clicking "Apply,"  then checking "Sync Music" and clicking "Apply" again.
You can find the syncing steps in the following article:

  • No picture on tv from 160GB classic

having read all the forums re the problems with the TV OUT function on the new 160GB classic i find that i have no problem with that ....but i can get no picture on tv from connecting using the apple AV cable to the AV input on a new panasonic TV. i can get sound but no picture .bought the apple AV connection kit containing universal dock and AV cable (one red one white one yellow),set ipod to TV out, played imported DVD(works fine on ipod screen) but although sound is clear ,there is no sign of any visuals . could it be that the cable is an older type and is not compatible to carry the video input from the dock to the TV ?? any ideas welcome.

thanks. i got new cables and now have vision. unfortunately the captions will not turn off even though the ipod screen settings read 'off' and the picture resolution is very poor . is this normal when viewing a movie on the big screen (a 32' lcd panasonic) ?

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • Select characters/symbols won't display on iPod 160GB Classic since restore

I don't know if anyone has come across this yet or not. My new iPod 160GB Classic crashed after 1 week. Since restoring, I've noticed that certain characters/symbols won't display in artist/title names on my iPod that used to display just fine before the restore (symbols like + and ÿ). The restore function says that it restores it to the 'original factory settings,' but obviously not. I have tried restoring again, but that hasn't solved the problem. I've tried getting the track names from Gracenote (thinking maybe it was a font-specific thing), but that didn't help either. I know it seems petty, but I'm not sure how to solve it. The latest update has been applied to my iPod and I have the latest version of iTunes. Any ideas? I believe the crash was caused by a third party software which has since been removed. I have not experienced any problems since.

Probably, the easiest way to resolve this is to copy the artwork from one song on an album and paste it into every song on that album.
In your iTunes Library, choose an album that has artwork issues; choose one track that has the artwork and copy it. Then:
the slightly longer method is to check each song individually, until you find the one with the missing artwork. Paste (the copy previously made) from one of the other tracks on the album.
a slightly quicker method is to highlight all the songs on that album (make sure it is just that one album) and paste the artwork into the box.
Sync the iPod with your iTunes Library.

  • Problem with 160GB Classic

So, I just recently installed the new 1.1 update for my 160Gb Classic. Everything worked fine. Then I started to apply some EQ's to songs (which I had not previously done) and iTunes froze up. I managed to end the task and quit iTunes and used the eject storage device icon on the bottom toolbar on my computer to eject my iPod. After saying it was "OK to disconnect", I did and the iPod clicked, shut down and came back on saying I had no music. However, when I plugged it back into iTunes, it showed that all the space my music had previously taken up was now listed as "Other". I don't want to have to re-load all my music. Can anyone help me?
    Here are my stats:
    Windows
    iTunes 7.5
    iPod Classic 160GB
    HP Computer

The easy way is just to do a restore. In the future, I wouldn't work on my iTunes library files while the iPod is connected. It seems to me that iTunes already uses a HUGE chunk of system resources, and having the iPod connected just uses even more. Then when you start changing ID3 tags ("Get Info"), it can really cause the system to CHUG. If you don't believe me, try just changing one ID3 tag on a 1.5GB movie file. iTunes practically takes over the computer until it's darned good and ready to do something else.
Or, I'd download [Tagger|http://tvtagger.wordpress.com>, which doesn't use nearly as many resources as iTunes, and allows you to edit many more ID3 fields than iTunes does.

  • I have recently used iTunes to subscribe to some Podcasts flawlessly. Then suddenly, I could see the latest Podcasts in iTunes, but they were no longer available on my 160GB Classic. All other functions appear ok. Can anyone out there save me from myself

Help ! I have recently used iTunes to subscribe to some Podcasts flawlessly. Then suddenly, I could only view the latest downloaded Podcasts in my iTunes account. I no longer had any Podcasts on my 160GB Classic. Can anyone save me from me ? I would truely appreciate any suggestions or direction. Thank you.    [email protected]

Connect your iPod to iTunes and check on the Device/Podcasts pane; there are several options for which Podcasts are "kept on/left on" the iPod at each Sync. Are they set the way you want? For instance, if the setting is "to keep on the iPod only new Podcasts", that would cause older Podcasts to be removed.
If you need to chnage the setting, you will need to Sync the iPod afterwards for the change to take effect.
