160GB iPod Classic Hard Drive Problem? please help!

hi,
I've been trying for weeks to figure out what is wrong with my 160gb classic. it is 14 months old, so just out of warranty. I recently updated to iTunes 10.1.2, after not having synced my iPod for a few months. a few weeks later i went to plug in my ipod and it wasn't recognized by iTunes. i got a bit worried, so i kept trying to unplug it and plug it back in. the one time it popped up, iTunes said it needed to be restored, but the restore failed and it was stuck in disk mode when I unplugged it. I replugged it in and it would only show up in Disk Utility. after tonnes of searching, i tried to do an erase from there, which only made things worse, as the erase constantly failed. Finally i tried to plug my ipod into my old PC running Windows XP. after a few tries iTunes recognized it. the first few restores failed, but after about 5 one completed and i could finally access the menus on my iPod again. However, my ipod still won't show up on iTunes on either of these computers. I did a diagnostic test (SMART or whatever) and the number of the ones that aren't supposed to be high are really high. it this a hard drive issue? is there anything i can do?
another thing i ended up doing is plugging my dad's 3G nano into my mac. iTunes wouldn't recognize it either, which worried me. Disk Utility would see it though, so i just ejected it as to not break it any more.
I really want ONE of these ipod's to work! please help!

  • Macbook Pro Hard Drive Problem - Please Help

My macbook pro had a hard drive failure so I went out and bought a new hard drive and got it to work with the Mac OS, although 2 days later it crashed and now it is not being found when I use the disk utility (Cmd-R), I even ran a hardware test and showed no trouble found.
Should I return this hard drive and get another?
Or is there another problem that is occuring?
    I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2012)
    Thank You.

I just installed a new ribbon cable for the hard drive...Now I get a new error that is popping a message saying "2003-f", this happens when I try to go to the online recovery (CMD-R). I tried two different hard drives and still won't let me get to the utility.
Someone please help, my mini semester classes have started for my University, and I am stuck with no laptop.
    Thank You.

  • G4 Powerbook Hard Drive Problem - PLEASE HELP!!

I have a powerbook G4 15 inch alu. It is running OSX version 10.4.11
My system profiler tells me I have a 74.5GB hard drive with 69.34GB used, but I had wiped the HD in September 2008 and reinstalled the OS and few other programmes and files, so this shouldn't be the case at all.
I have found that my the problem is with my Users folder - within Users, my user account (the main account, I have another account setup so my mum can use her iPhone) has 67GB used. But when I go into my user account (clicking through the icons, after double-clicking the MacintoshHD desktop icon), none of the folders within my account run to anwhere near 67GB. Totalled, they come to around 10-15GB at most. There's a good 50GB or so of hard drive that just seems to be missing.
I ran Drive Genius to repair permissions and that eliminated a couple of GB of this 'missing space' but no more than that. How can I go about finding and reaccessing my lost hard drive space?
FWIW - I reinstalled the OS in September because this was my University laptop and the result of 4-5 years use had resulted in loads of unwanted files. I saved the important stuff to discs and then reinstalled because it was much easier (I thought) than trying to find and get rid of all the unwanted stuff.
Please please help. At the moment, the computer is running fine if a little sluggishly (understandable given how much of the hard drive is 'used'), but I had a nasty experience earlier this year with my G5's hard drive crapping ut and really don't want to end up in the same boat with this one. I also need that extra space back so I can use some programmes I can't install or work with as things stand.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this and respond, I don't know enough about computers to have any clue as to how to proceed, so your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

eww - will do and report back.
cornelius - apologies for the ambiguity there. Hope this clears things up a bit:
Users folder = get info says 69.34GB used
Double-click on the Users folder and I get three folders - the shared folder, my mum's account folder, and my account folder. My account is the main/master account.
The shared folder is empty. My mum's account folder has a couple GB used, mine has 66.5GB used.
I double-click on my account folder, and get icons/folders for Desktop, Library, Movies, etc (the usual stuff). When I do Get Info for each of these, the sum of GB used by them is about 10-15GB, nowhere near the 66GB supposedly used.
If it helps any, the File System is Journalled HFS+
S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, and Disk Utility aren't picking up anything bad other than the corrupted permissions I repaired prior to making this post. Repairing permissions only freed up a few GB more space, still got 50 missing GB to locate and free up. Or start saving for a replacement HD, but if this is a sign of a crash, I'd rather know now so I can plan for that.
Many thanks to both of you for responding so quickly - hopefully this problem is solvable.
It doesn't make sense, there's nothing else which could have used those 'missing' GB. And, as I only reinstalled everything in September I know there's no way the few programmes I've added and 10 or so CDs I've copied onto the G4 could account for the missing 50GB. My HD should have most of its space free - minus the space used by OSX, any OSX updates, and literally a handful of small apps and files.

  • External hard drive problem, please help!

I have a SEAGATE external hard drive which I had associated with Time machine so its file system was HFS+ journaled.
when i turn the hdd on a window pop up comes on the screen telling me to either initialize, ignore or eject.
if i go to disk utility the hard disk shows as disk1s2 and that its format is FAT32.
trying to repairing it/fixing through Disk utility gives me the following error

    ** /dev/disk1s2
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 000000
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
however if i go to terminal and type fsck -f -y /dev/disk1s2
after a few fixes the following output was given
    Andrew:~ Andrew$ fsck_hfs -f -d -y /dev/disk1s2

If you don't have any data on the drive, you may want to initialize the disk. Otherwise I would check out DiskWarrior.

  • Acomdata Hard Drive Problem - Please help!!

I purchased an Acomdata HydridDrive 250GB USB 2.0 drive today for my MacBook. When plugging it in, it shows up on the desktop like a CD and you are supposed to install "SecureHD_Login_V126.pkg" . So I run it and everything goes as normal... it selects my MacBook's HD, asks for my password, warns me the installation will require a reboot... then it says "There were errors installing the software" and "Please try installing again". Well, I've tried several times with no success. According to instructions, I have to install this before I can mount the drive because it has password protection or something. There are no forums or any useful help on Acomdata's website. Anyone know what's wrong?

    monkey paw,
That's correct. I use the built-in "rsync" command line utility to create and maintain backups. It's a very powerful tool, if a bit less than user-friendly. Best of all, a command line incorporating it can be used in an Automator Action, which can then be double-clicked to run the backup whenever the external drive is connected.
If any of this sounds interesting, open Terminal, then type:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">man rsync</pre>
and press <RETURN>. You will then have displayed the rsync "manual pages." Use the arrow keys to scroll up and down, or use the spacebar to go page by page.
Once you become totally lost in these man pages, come back here for specific help on using it, if you like

  • X40 2382-ECU Hard drive problem - please help!

I have a X40 2382-ECU thinkpad.  I ran PC-doctor program and found the S.M.A.R.T. status test and short self-test both failed while the rest of the rest of the tests passed.  After that, I ran a "chkdsk" comment from window and found no error.  I was just wondering what does the result from PC-doctor means.  Does that mean I have to replace my HD?  Is there any other way to fix it without getting a new HD?  If I have to replace HD, which HD will be capatible with my system (I'd like to upgrade the HD if possible - it only has 40gb now).  Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum!
I'm afraid that no good news will come from me this time around: the fact that your HDD has failed PC-Doctor tests suggests that it's on its way out. If I were you I'd clone the drive (or backup all the important stuff at least) yesterday.
Your X40 uses a 1.8"/4200rpm Hitachi drive, which are no longer in production. The biggest size available was 60GB, and these change hands at about $125-150 for an unused drive in the original unopened packaging, and that's on eBay...
    Good luck.
    Cheers,

My PC computer was wiped (virus) including itunes. How do I transfer the many playlists and music on my ipod to the new re-installed itunes?? Ipod is synced to old itunes. I have all original music files on external hard drive. Please help?
New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes.  When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists.  Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.

iPod classic hard drive needle sometimes skips (Red X). When it doesn't and seems to power on normally, I start to restore it in Itunes and then it starts to skip again with the Red X on the screen.  One time I was able to run the disk utility in time and reformat the hard drive, but the red x ended up appearing again and the hard drive started skipping again.
Is there anything I can do besides get a new hard drive?
P.S. I have also tried the banging on palm/floor trick and it hasn't worked yet for me.

There nothing we can suggest to save a bad iPod hardisk, except to try some 3rd Party software to try repair the Hardisk.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk.  Duh!  The application for the home is in the mail.

  • I cannot install, only hard drive test. please help!

    hi,
my iBook G4 crashed about 2 months ago and I got a new harddrive but it came with no operating system. I borrowed a friend's disks but everytime I put in disk 1 it will only go to Hard Drive Test and I cannot make it go to a section where I can actually reinstall. I have tried pressing command, c, command and c, and nothing. every time it goes to the Hard Drive Test and I have already run it and I passed.
the girl with the disks also has an iBook G4 and I do not understand what the problem is. she just bought it after I did.
I bought my laptop in the US but I am currently in Denmark and could not get Apple to actually fix my laptop but there should be no problem.
    please help!

    heychristaay,
    As I asked in My Previous Reply;
"What OS was installed on your iBook before you replaced the HD?
Have you tried installing, using either the disks that shipped with the iBook, or a Full Retail Version of an OS, that you may have upgraded to? Your own disks?'
If the borrowed disks, do not look Exactly like THESE, they will not work to install Panther 10.3.x.

  • I can't format my hard drive! Please help!

I had a lot of problems with my Mac mini - related to CD burning, CD reading, ejecting discs, hard drive partitioning, Mac OS X Leopard installation... so I can't tell I am surprised with my new problem, which is...
I need to completely *erase my internal hard drive* on my Mac mini. So I opened Disk Utility, selected hard drive and went to Erase tab - I did everything as instructed by the app - but the "Erase..." button is not active! It's *not going to allow me to erase my hard drive*.
Please does anyone know why? I need to reformat the hard drive and I just don't know how.
Thanks, I hope this problem will be solved soon.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can't reformat the drive you booted from, so in order to reformat the internal hard drive, you need to boot from the install disc that came with your mini (or a full retail MacOS install disk). That will provide you with an option to perform a full Erase and Install, performing the reformat and reinstallation in one go, or to open Disk Utility (in the Utilities menu) to perform a partitioning and reformat independently of a reinstall of MacOS.

  • Hard Drive (Anyone, please help!)

Well, I've had this ipod since may of '05, and it's been working great up until its last few months. First few months before it died it kept freezinf up and what not, and finally, whenever tha apple figure comes up in the screen, the sad face exclamation follows right after. As I tired connecting this through the power supply, it just kept going through the same cycle, BUT with one little exception, when the sad face goes away, a battery with an excalamation comes up, so I took it into account that it might be a battery problem. So after numerous weeks of waiting, I tried to set up an appointment online for the Apple Store, and long and behold they are booked every day from before the holidays, to this day. So I took matters into my own hands with an e xperienced friend, and replaced the battery. Long and behold THAT didnt work either BUT, when we were in the process of installing the battery, we took the hard drive out, and we realized there was something shaking inside. This we thought wasn't a good sign knowing that a heard drive should be solid as a rock and have no lose parts. So now I'm sitting here, thinking of buying a 30GB hardrive off eBay, and just put that in, instead of taking it to the Apple store which has no room for reservations. Although, this is why I came here. Can anybody tell me if there's a nother variable that I might be missing, and can I go through just upgrading my hard drive to something even more spacious for a a very little amount of money?
Here's a link for the hard drive for anyone who's wondering what it really is: http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Ipod-30GB-Hard-Drive-Toshiba-MK3004GAH-AS-IS_W0QQitemZ 180074688075QQihZ008QQcategoryZ73837QQcmdZViewIt

It would be greatly appreciated if you can send me your answers to my e-mail, because I'm new to the discussion form. Here it is: [email protected]
But if that doesn't work, you can always respond to me here. I'd probably get it eventually. Thank you for your time.
Dell Dimension 4700   Windows XP   It's a PC.

    That's the way.
The drive is probably formatted NTFS which is Windows proprietary file system. Mac OS can read it, but not write to it.
You can do as suggested by TheDave if you have sufficient HD space for temporary storage. Depending on whether you need to continue using the drive with Windows machines there are a few options.
Best for Mac only use is to re-partition and format as GUID partition map and Mac OS Extended (journaled)
For dual use, Leave the partition as MBR and format as FAT32 (MS-DOS in Disk Utility). This has a file size limit of a little over 4GB, but can be read and written to by both Mac and Windows.
There is also exFAT (aka FAT64) if both OSs support it - no file limit there that you'll ever reach.
Alternatively there are software solutions which will allow the Mac to read and write to NTFS drives. I'm told they're not as good as the other solutions, but may be an option if you haven't space to store the contents while re-formatting.

  • Big problems after hard drive failure - Please help.

About 2 weeks ago, my Macbook seized, and was sent to Apple to repair.
It was found that the hard drive failed, and 2 weeks later I received my macbook back with a new hard drive.
Luckily I had backed up my home drive and was able to restore it using backup.
Now this is where my problems start.
My home drive is not the same name ( I think - I can'r remember too well what it was called previously )
I have my entire music library backed up to an external hard drive, and mounting this hard drive is a REAL pain in the *** now.
Sometime it loads up, sometime it just doesn;t get recognised, and I can put the USB connection in and out 10 times before it mounts.
I have verified the disk, and nothing is wrong.
Does anyone know what this problen could be ?
I have left the external hard drive in during the night, and after the macbook goes to sleep, I will go back to it in the morning, and the hard drive has been unmounted, and I repeat the exercise over again of trying to mount the drive.
Its so annoying, and I just dont know wht to do.
If anyone can help, I;d really appreciate it.
    Griff

SMART status is a pretty reliable indicator of what is going on. You should back up your irreplaceable files as soon as possible.
