160GB..or not!!

Just got my new 160GB iPod and I notice that when there's nothing of mine been put onto it there's 74.7MB used and 148GB free so where's the rest hiding?

Which one is the correct because surely both can't be correct (or can they!!!)
That's kind of my point - they're both correct, in context.
160Gb10 = 148Gb2
It's a bit like specifying a quantity in gallons without saying whether they are US or Imperial gallons - everybody gets the same volume but one number will be bigger than the other. I could offer you a tank with 10 Imperial gallons of fuel in it - but if I tell you it's 12 US gallons it sounds like you're getting more.
It looks like Finder is reporting the figure using the Gb10 value. Since this is slightly larger than the number of bytes reported in Windows I suspect that the HPFS gets slightly better use out of the raw space compared to FAT32.
Didn't see the above. So it would appear the true GB value of the 160GB iPod is less than the figure Apple advertise.
Truth is in the eye of the beholder... Marketing is hype...

You do wonder whethere WD (and others) will learn anything from this.  RMAs can't help anyone, perhaps a little guidance on the casing or an installation sheet would help to resolve some of these ?

  • 160gb classic Notes volume capacity?

What is the capacity of the Notes section? I have text files of the Old Testament in alphabet order and when I view from Ruth on down they are all empty. If I put 1_Ruth at the top of the list it has data in the file. Then the lower half of the Psalms on down are empty. All text files are 4kb in the desktop directory but listed as 16kb on the ipod. Entire Notes directory shows 19.5mb on the ipod. On desktop the Old Testament with all books shows 5mb. Each Bible book has separate directory with chapters inside each book. My 160gb ipod has capacity=149gb with audio=38gb photos=465mb other 553mb free=111gb so I am not even half full.
    Thanks

    Hey there,
Here is what [THIS|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2026?viewlocale=en_US] Apple support document says about notes on your iPod.
"The Notes folder on your iPod can hold very large text files, but iPod can only display up to 1000 files, the first 4 kilobytes (KB) of text, or about 4096 characters will be shown for each note."
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod 160GB Frozen, not recognized in iTunes or HardDrive

My iPod 160GB froze mid playing of a song. It won't turn off, even if I try restart by pressing the play/pause key and middle of the wheel. I connected it to iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize it, meaning the iPod isn't appearing in iTunes, or even on my HardDrive.
    Any suggestions?

I just installed the latest iTunes. It found my 64GB touch 3G no problem. An hour later, it no longer can recognize it (iTunes takes forever to load). This happ4ned 2 weeks ago, with the last iTunes upgrade. I had to restore it, losing everything on it. I won't do that again. I did not hing to my computer/itouch between working an hour ago and now. My iTouch is less than a year old. There is no excuse for it to be broken. There are no Apple stores by me, either. There is no reason for the iTouch to stop being recognized randomly.

  • 160gb drive not det. in bios anymore

my 160gb sata drive suddenly won't recognize on my system.  not in bios or in bootup or anywhere else.  i haven't done anything to it to make it die.  i have a 250gb hitachi that works beautifully.  same ports and cables and everything.  what could be causing this?  dead drive?  or could i do soemthing?  i fear the cost of recovering data from a dead drive.   thanks.
my system info should be in my sig

please excuse my lack of infomation and my conflicting information on the original post. i was very tired and frustrated.  had been up and working on this for literally 24 hours before i posted.  here's what i can give you:
new drive: hitachi 250gb sata (working, and running on it now)
old drive: hitach 160gb sata (supposedly dead)
bios has been reset to defaults, save for a few things, boot logo, floppy seek, very small stuff like that.
sata settings are: sata only, keep pata enabled (still using pata dvdr), no raid
dvdr and new 250gb drive are detected perfectly.  250gb drive is connected to the sata1 connector.  also have a new floppy drive that works fine (picked it up to install raid drivers, as it was my original intention to stripe the two drives).
if i plug in the 160gb sata (either alone on the sata1 connector, or with the 250gb on the sata1 and 160gb on the sata2), it spins up, doesn't make any weird noises like the heads are out of alignment or it's being scratched up.  what happens is it goes to detect it and just freezes.  i have to hit escape a bunch of times to get the system to boot up.  it boots fine afterwards, but without the 160gb recognized.
so, from what i can see: both of the sata cables i'm using are functional.  i've tested both.  the drive is receiving power.  it's not a PSU overload issue, as i borrowed a sata drive from a friend to try it and it worked fine.  it's just simply not being recognized.  the oddest thing about all this is i unplug it to plug in my new 250gb and the 160gb just ups and dies.
you're right, it's probably just a drive that went bad.  luckily, i have access to the guy who came up with the sata spec (my housemate's dad works with him), and he says if it's not making any weird noises and it's powering up, the data IS recoverable, and he can likely do it for me.
does anyone have any ideas outside of just getting the data recovered?  all i'm concerned about on the drive is my music collection, which just happens to be the most important thing to me EVER.  i just could be missing something silly here, or doing something wrong.  it's been known to happen.
i'm going to keep playing with it and see what i can do (or likely, what i can't do).
system info ISNT in my sig like i thought it was, so in short, neo2-865pfisr, p4c 2.8ghz, 1gb mushkin 3500 memory, those two drives, a plextor 708a dvd-rw, beefy psu (don't know the stats off the top of my head - top of the line enermax), evga 6800gt, sb audigy 2.  nothing fancy.  nothing overclocked.  no weird tweaks anywhere.  everything is more or less stock.
thanks so much for any insight, and sorry for being so terse in my original post.  i was about to die of frustration. :p

  • Ipod 160gb does not show up in itunes or in windows explorer

I bought an ipod classic a month ago and transferred my 40 gb of music from my old ipod (same model) over to it. There were no problems until yesterday all the sudden the classic decided to stop working. it plays songs but only when it feels like it and does not show up in windows explorer or itunes. i spent hours on apple looking through the troubleshooting stuff but nothing worked. All i see under my device manager is WPD Filesystem Volume Driver with a yellow box and an exclamation point. My old ipod classic connects to itunes just fine. What do i need to do to fix this? also the broken classic does charge on the computer and say "connected - eject before disconnecting". Please help.

Edit: It is actually showing up in win explorer as a Removeable Drive but if i try to click on it to browse the files it freezes completely. It still doesn't show up in itunes.

  • My iPod Classic 160GB is not recognised on iTunes - it says that there is no iPod found? When its plugged in! Please help

iPod classic is not recognised on iTunes. My iPod screen is flickereing constantly - from upside down to the right way around. It wont even show up on my iTunes. I plug it in to my MacBook and it gives me the option to restore but then once Ive clicked it says that 'it cannot be restored as there is no iPod found' when it connected and it says so on my iPod screen. Please help! Thanks J

Tried resetting the ipod and its enabled to be used as hard disk on itunes.
I assume you mean the "Enable Disk Use" option is enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab?

  • My iPod generation 6 160gb will not sync. iTunes says corrupt, won't restore just errors out and then loops the same messages.

My iPod is corrupt according to iTunes, however it won't restore through iTunes either.  I've tried to reformat the drive.  Makes no difference.  I've tried to reformat after choosing disk manager, and again the same result.  The iPod takes forever to work through the reformatting process and I get the same message "Itunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod" and then my pc tells me to format the disk.
It's so frustrating, is there a fix to this? It seems like the iPod could still function, but I'm missing the way to get out of this loop, please help me!

Likely a hard drive fault, see the note that i wrote few years ago, hopefully it helps
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • 160gb classic not loading

My Ipod classic 160Gb I bought just a few weeks ago has stopped working already. It wont load, when I reset it it tells me battery empty, when I load it, either on laptop, 12V or power it just makes this reset sound every minute or so but nothing else happens. Can I consider this machine gone or is there still hope?
By the way, it was also very irresponsive playing songs, skipping many, where my previous 80Gb never had that issue.

Just a small update.... got the thing loaded....
But now it got worse.... It is telling me there is no music, and also no free space. I cannot get it seen on my computer (Windows 8 or in Itunes). Itunes just freezes when I plug it in, even internet explorer freezes... Tried it as a readable disk, but also that doesnt work. Anybody has any idea how to get a full reset of the ipod without linking it to a computer?

  • IPod 160GB does not sync all tracks in iTunes

I recently bought an iPod Classic (160GB). I had loaded about 8000 tracks for my 60GB iPod. I loaded another 1148 tracks and tried to sync my 160GB iPod. Out of 9148 tracks, it will only sync 8414 tracks. Why does it stop at 8414?

It's possible you have 20 duplicates, that is files with same track no, track name, album & artist. Either iTunes doesn't copy the duplicates or the duplicate effectively overwrites the original in the iPod's library. In contast iTunes can import different files with the same details and can even occasionaly end up with more than one entry for the same file.

  • 160gb Classic not recognised by itunes, but comes up as external disc

To add another to the many versions of this problem, my classic will appear as an external drive but will not be recognised by itunes. I've reset the ipod, tested all the cables and ports and tried it on more than one Mac, all to no avail.
I can't restore it via itunes or the Disk Utility and am pretty stuck. I realise help is unlikely, but would like it to be known that there is another person having this kind of problem.

  • TS1363 iPod Classic 160gb will not connect to Macbook.

My iPod classic will not connect to my macbook. It is recognized by my wall charger, speakers, and FM transmitter in my car. I've had this trouble for some time, but before I attributed to my previous Macbook which had a few other problems. However I just got a new macbook, and it is still not coming up in Finder nor iTunes. Any advice is much appreciated!

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting this issue? Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your Mac?  Have you tried another USB cable just in case?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the Mac?

  • 160GB Harddrive not recognized.

I just got my computer up and running. I have a 160GB harddrive but it only shows 123GB. I installed windows update pagkage 1 and then 2, and it still shows 120GB. Whats wrong?

After you apply the "enablebiglba" registry hack" (Maxtor has a file that will do this for you), your machine will see the full disk size with the additional space shown as unpartitioned. You can then make an additional partition to make this space available for use.

  • ITunes 11.1.5 says my iPod Classic (160gb) full when it is not!

I want to say that after iTunes (11.1.3?) my iPod Classic (160gb) will not sync anymore.
I have recently updated iTunes to latest version of 11.1.5 with no luck!
In short, I am using Windows 7 and cannot get my iPod to sync anymore.
I keep getting the error message that my iPod is full and cannot be synced unless I clear some space...and when I say 'space' it wants
another 20gb free to just add a few new albums that I downloaded.
The problem is that I still have 15gb free and IT IS NOT FULL.  With a full capacity of 148gb, I have used ~130gb.  Even in the info bar it shows the correct usage of space on my iPod and shows that there IS free space.
None of it makes any sense and it is completely in error on behalf of Apple.
Also, I am no novice to PC's and have tried everything short of re-installing iTunes, which I refuse to do.
My current PC build is and has the latest software and hardware available and everything up-to-date.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you need anymore info from me then just let me know.
    Many thanks

I purposely created several different threads because I wasn't sure which discussion to enter in and it is my opinion that it fit into any of these categories.
Actually, you posted the same thing into the iPod Classic forum four times, and one additional thread in (if I recall correctly) the iTunes for Windows forum. That's impolite; at best it simply clutters up the forum with unnecessary threads, which can cause other people's valid posts to be missed in the mass; and at worst, you'll get responses to more than one of your threads which will confuse, not just you, but anyone trying to help you. I've seen it happen.
I'll ask again, please refrain from multiple posting.
    me too said:
I am also aware that the "other" is my album art.
    No it is not.
There is always a small amount of Other on an iPod, but large amounts of Other indicates data that has become corrupted and cannot be used by the iPod.
Your screenshot, which finally confirms the actual message you are getting, suggests that despite what you may believe, you are trying to Sync at lest 22GB of media to your iPod. One album in .wav form would only take up about 700MB, so you have to work out what else is set to Sync. Check the photos pane (just along from Summary) to make sure that there isn't an album of photos set to Sync. Also check the other panes as well, for Podcasts, videos etc. that you may not have realised are set to Sync.
If all else fails, start taking music off your iPod, so that this unknown media can be put on. That way, at least you will be able to see what is being put on that you didn't know about. Then, you can take that off and put back on only what you want.
Let me just make a final suggestion: your comment ...
"None of it makes any sense and it is completely in error on behalf of Apple."
... isn't going to help you in any way. Stop blaming Apple and look for the actual problem. Once you find the problem, and can therefore see the cause, then - if you must - you can blame someone.

  • Hard Drive not recognized in Windows Setup

    Mobo:  MSI PM8M2-V
    CPU:    Intel P4 64-Bit CPU
    HDD:   WD 1600 PATA Drive
    OS:      Windows XP 64-Bit
    BIOS:    W7071VMS V2.3 092605
I am building a computer for my brother and have hit a roadblock.  The Windows XP setup will not recognize my PATA drive (the only drive in the system) by default.  I have downloaded drivers from both the MSI and VIA websites as well as a third party website out of desparation but every 64-bit driver I can get my hands on for this machine will load however will not recognize the drive.
I need to know if I should cut my losses here or if there is a path to salvation as this 'couple hours' project is begining to take up a significant portion of my life.  He had a version of windows on the machine prior to my meddling however I'm almost certain it was 32-bit.  Truth be told the 32-bit version of Windows didn't recognize the drives either but I haven't tried toubleshooting that scenario.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.  I simply cannot afford to spend more time working on this (2 1/2 weeks away from a bachelor's degree, yeah I'm pretty busy).  Thank you.

Because I am able to fully install Slackware on a second partition I am certain the BIOS sees the drive correctly . . .

    . . . I can start the 32-bit installation process

If you can still boot into Slackware, then the BIOS still recognises the HDD.  Do Slackware and the BIOS recognise that the HDD is 160Gb and not about think that it is about 20 to 30Gb ?
If you  have access to a 32-bit copy of Windows, have you tried installing that to see if it works ?  If it does, you have confirmed that the problem is with the 64-bit version of Windows (and your motherboard or HDD).
Personally, I wouldn't install the 64-bit version of Windows - it hasn't been around for 5 years yet !
Ahhh, brothers . . . I have one just like that, "Can you come round after work and get the viruses and malware off my PC please ?  It should only take you about 5 minutes."  Yeah, right !
Just a (further) thought, I think I had a similar problem some time ago.  Windows 2K wouldn't recognise a HDD which I had previously partitioned with some version of Linux.  It seemed as if Windows didn't like the partition table or something.  I was convinced that the HDD was faulty . . . but it would still boot Linux.  I eventually managed to get round the problem by doing a low-level format on the HDD and installing W2K before re-installing Linux.  I now ALWAYS install Windows first, followed by Linux.
ps.  Good luck with the Bachelors - not good timing.
