169 Death IP Address

When I hook up my MacBook to my Cable Modem via Ethernet cable DHCP assigns a 169.*.**.* IP Address, which I know is assigned when the computer cannot communicate to the external network. Does anyone know how this is repaired? I'm pretty sure the problem is with the MacBook, rather than the modem itself, because I can connect with the PC without recieving the 169 IP Address. I researched the problem and found that if you turn off the modem for a half hour or so, it will reset to factory defaults, however after doing this the problem persisted. A similar problem happened to my old Desktop PC, and it could only be repaired by Reformatting it completely. Please, if anyone could spare me from having to reformat my machine, It would be more than appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt.

WITH Ethernet Cable plugged in-
en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

WITHOUT Ethernet Cable plugged in-

ether 00:17:f2:40:17:95

So, theres no difference. Does this mean anything?
Oh, i'm not sure if this will help either, but
Using AirPort with another wireless source:

  • 169. IP address after updates

I did the software updates yesterday for QT 7.2 and iTunes 7.1.3 (?) and knew that the next time I restarted FireFox, it would be installing the 2.0.05 update. So I restarted and noticed there was no "application named airport wants permission...." window, and on went to launch firefox. It started up, did that update and then couldn't find the server. I have a 169. IP address, cannot get online, no Firefox, no Safari, no Mail, no IP address. I have tried a manual IP address and releasing from DHCP server, and the Internet Connect window just freezes saying it was loading.
I have tried a ethernet connection and no changes. This keeps happening as I've tried multiple times last night and today with plenty of reboots. I have automatic as the network preference and have my own network selected. All the other computers in my house can get online, including this macbook I'm writing from. It is NOT my router, or DSL modem.
I remember seeing a terminal window that came up from clicking on some item in the QT package in the system library in my searching around for the trouble. I don't remember what it said but from it, I got the impression that QT didn't finish the update, even though the updater window showed otherwise, and had me restart.
I've searched all day for information about this problem and can only find issues with Tiger (which I don't have), not being able to view AVI files and files disappearing after the updates. Is anyone else experiencing connection problems with Panther?

    Hi Elko
Try Resetting AirPort Express. If you have another kind of base station that article will give you a link.

  • MacBook 169.254 IP address fix

I had an issue connecting to a College network using a MacBook. The Airport would recognize the Cisco Aironet, but I was only assigned a 169.254 IP address. To fix this I turned on Apple Talk.
    I found the solution here:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=352019
    ===quote
I tried multiple solutions including "reserving" an ip address for a specific MAC address on the actual router (which is acting as the DHCP server). even this did not work.
Then I checked the "Make AppleTalk Active" and had the "Configure" option set to "Automatically". its the only thing that worked. Hope this helps.
    ===end quote
    Hope this helps,
    Mitch

I have the same problems with my Mac mini bought June 22. Until yesterday there is no any problems, today I found it couldn't connect Internet and the ip is 169.254.12.3, I updated DHCP, reboot, and set ip to 192.168.1.3, and so on, but all to get the same result.
At last, I tried cable to connect it, I found the ip is also 169.254.12.3, I have no way, can you help me, too?
By the way, there are 5 others device connecting to my LAN with cable or wireless, including iPad, all of them are no any problems.

  • Invalid 169.* IP Address  (DHCP error)

    Hi,
At my company we have a 3com wireless and I can connect but I cannot get a valid ip address. I have already tried that:
    - Reset networking settings.
    - ifconfig en0 (down/up)
    - changing the MTU to 1400
    - reboot the iPhone
    - DHCP and Static IP (valid one)
My wireless is channel 6, ap mode 2 and WEP.
If I go to other places ( house, restaurants etc) I can easily connect!
    Tks for any idea.
    Regards,
    Fernando

As you no doubt know, 169.* is a self-assigned address when DHCP doesn't work.
I haven't found any good way around that, but I'm replying to at least sympathize.
    1) Rebooting the company router might work.
    2) If you meant a static IP also failed to connect, that sounds more like a passcode mismatch or something. Is it a secured network?
    Luck!

  • Can't connect to internet, always get (169.254) ip address

Mac Mini with OS X 10.5.8
Internet connection worked for years up til now.
I know the Comcast modem is working because my other computer accesses service fine.
I only connect directly from the Comcast modem to a single computer at any one time (to prevent conflicts).
I have disconnected the battery from the Comcast modem and rebooted the modem and my computer.
I have called Comcast and had them troubleshoot the line and reset the modem. All looks fine from their end.
I have trashed all plist files that have to do with the network (and let the computer regenerate new ones). I then reconfigured the network and the settings in Network seem exactly the same.
Any ideas? Could a bad internal battery be enough to cause this? Should I zap PRAM? Any suggestions will be entertained. Thanks, Peter
(Also, in Proxies dialog, I tried removing the info (*,local, 169.254/16) in the "Bypass Proxy Settings for These Hosts and Domains" and it would cause the "Configure Proxies" selection to default to "Always Use PAC File". Had to go back and retrash all the plist files to have Proxies go back to "Configure Proxies-Manually".
    Here are my settings:

In my G5 (OS X 4.11) the Network area for Proxies has "Configure Proxies"  set to "Manually", same as Mac Mini (OS X 5.8); that's why I can't understand the ability of one to work and not the other.  (I'm fairly clueless about all the jargon in the Network configuring process, so asking me about proxies, etc will garner few informed response.)
Yes, I did use the "Insert Image" command. Don't know why it would be messed up. I will try again here.
And I'll try powering down the Modem for a longer period. Thanks.

  • Airport can no longer get DHCP address

    Hello,
I'm at the point of dumping the airport base station in the trash, but thought I would try this first.
I have broadband internet service. It worked - until mid morning today. Suddenly it will not work. The base station (old one, white - snow?), though set for DHCP, now defaults to a self-addressed 169... address. I have tried:
    - powering off the base station, the cable modem, powering up one at a time, etc etc. Internet provider (insight, IL) says they don't know why the apple base station is unable to renew the DHCP lease.
    - The Airport Admin Utility is set to Ethernet, using DHCP. There is no "renew DHCP lease" button there, but I have switched it to connect using modem and then switched backed to Ethernet, hit Update, and back comes Using DHCP ... with a 169.254 address.
    - I can connect through the cable modem with my powerbook without a problem. The address starts with 74.134.
I take it the self-assigned IP means there was a timeout or the airport was otherwise unable to get what it considered a valid IP.
    Is the base station toast?
Should I buy a router and hook it to that? Seems redundant, with my setup (two laptops, one desktop connected to base station LAN port)
I've spent several hours reading (via direct connect to the cable modem) and trying different wiring / reset combinations, and have about had it. Any thoughts most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Brian

It is a long while since I tried Google Toolbar, I am not sure what it changes. But I would not expect it to totally remove your options to use the ordinary toolbars.
    ■ Try
    * press the''' alt '''key on the keyboard, that may return the menu bar
    * once you have the menubar '''View -> Toolbars ->''' and select which you need
    * you may also use View-> Toolbars -> Customise and drag items back or use the restore default set option.
    * right clicking on the toolbars also gets you to the customise and show toolbars options
    ■ have a look at [[Back and forward or other toolbar items are missing]]
    PS
I hope you do not need to resort to editing registry settings, the firefox 'dragons' in prefs are user friendly compared with Windows registry. Messing up firefox prefs only really affects firefox normally; whereas errors in a registry edit may prevent you from even booting the computer.

  • IPad wont get IP address from DHCP Server

I have an enterprise WPA2 PEAP MSCHAPv2 wireless network. It allows access via 802.1x authentication using Radius (MS IAS Server) with certificates. I can join the network, enter credentials (that I can see work) and get the certificate. The problem is that I don't get an IP address. I get a 169. APIPA address. I tried to use a static IP address and that doesn't work either. I have connected various laptops, iPhones even a Dell Streak to this wireless network without issue. My iPad won't get an IP at all. There are plenty of addresses in the pool.
The setup is a 3COM WX3008 wireless LAN controller and 9552 access points.
Any ideas? I went through the articles on wireless settings and none of them help at all. I guess my next step is to wipe the iPad.
Like I said... EVERYTHING else works, every other device we try is surfing just not the iPad.

I see what you are trying to say but in this case its just not true. There is a problem with the iPad. Moving away from the most secure wireless technology or changing my "router" isn't a reasonable solution. We are using a current production model enterprise wireless LAN controller with lightweight access points. Its running its latest code. Its not the Free After Rebate model from the local B&M.
Again, when everything BUT the iPad works (iPod/iPhone/laptops of varying OS & vendor are all good) its not the routers fault. While downgrading my network may work it is not a reasonable solution to a problem with only the iPad.
Of course I don't like hearing it. I am here to hopefully find someone else with the same issue or get some tips that lead to a solution so the next google searcher will land on a solution.

  • Router not issusing DHCP addresses to AP clients

So I have configured a DHCP pool on my router to issue DHCP leases to wireless clients in my network - the clients can see the SSID broadcasting and can connect successfully. The only problem is that they don't receive an IP address.
IPCONFIG shows the 169.254 etc address...the network status shows "Limited or no connectivity" when hovering over the icon.
We used to have the clients receive their leases from a server which worked with the IP helper command...is there something simple I'm missing here?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Airport extreme base station cannot get a workable IP address

I see this is not a new issue, but I haven't been able to find a solution from any of the discussion or FAQ's that works. My internet provider is Comcast. All of a sudden my airport base station could not secure a workable IP address. Resetting, powering off, etc., did not fix the problem. I thought it might be with my base station, the saucer type, so I bought a new one. Same problem. If I bypass the router and plug directly into the computer there is no problem the computer connecting directly from the modem works fine. Does anyone have a solution to this? Thank you for your help.

I am having a similar problem. I just purchased a Time Capsule with airport/router built-in. I setup it up 2 days ago and it was a breeze. My iMac, Macbook Pro, and 2 iPhones connect to it wirelessly via DHCP with no problems. Suddenly this morning my Macbook Pro and 1 iPhone cannot get an IP address, other than the dreaded 'Self-assigned' 169... address. I can get an IP with my Macbook Pro connected via Ethernet with no issues. I did not change ANY settings. How is this possible? Also, I have a guest network setup on the second band and all of my devices can connect to that with no trouble, even the said Macbook Pro and iPhone. iMac has been connecting all along to everything. I've tried the following on the Macbook:
    - Removed Airport, rebooted, re-added Airport, rebooted
    - Forced a manual IP address (yes outside the range of DHCP reserved addresses)
    - Removed power / rebooted Time Capsule
Nothing works. I know my wireless card is fine because I can get an IP from the guest network. What gives?

  • Address book & iphone contacts disappeared.

I was updating some birthdays/contacts in address book n MAC while syncing. got the spinning color wheel of death and address book contacts disappeared. since i was syncing at the time iphone has lost contacts as well. anyone know anyway to recover these?
i sync through itunes not mobile me
    desperate...

Ok let's see what we can accomplish here.
Step 1: Disconnect iPhone do not do anymore syncing for a bit
Step 2: Launch iTunes - Go to iTunes Preferences - Devices - Disable Automatic Sync with iPhone. This will prevent your backups from being over written.
While your there check the dates of the backups. Hopefully the last backup was BEFORE the data got lost and not after. If so you might be in luck.
Step 3: Connect iPhone - On the Summary Window Restore iPhone - DO NOT backup iPhone as it may over write the 1 backup that may contain the info you need.
Once restore is done iPhone will reboot. And will give you 2 options. Choose restore from backup. And then choose backup from pull down menu. It will now put that backup onto iPhone.
Keep in mind no guarantees this backup will have what you are looking for but it may be possible it does.
Once this is done. Check AB see if it has all the contacts back in the Mac. If not. Add 1 contact, And Sync. It should re-add all contacts to AB the backup put onto iPhone.
Now backup AB by going to File - Export - Address Book Archive.
So if this ever happens again just double click on the AB Backup and it will put AB back the way it was when you made that backup.

  • IP address not being set using Win XP Pro with Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I'd appreciate any information on this subject. I got a new Airport Extreme on Friday to replace my DLink G router. Basically is blew up. So I've got it set up and my Vista laptop is running just fine. However, my work laptop which is a Win XP Pro machine can not aquire a network address. It continually says "Aquiring Network Address" and then times out and disconnects. After a lot of looking around and checking out blogs I took a look and it seems that I cannot get an IP address. When ipconfig in cmd it shows not IP address and subnet, etc as 0.0.0.0. OKay, so I try to reboot, I've also tried release renew and still no go. I can connect with a cable to the Airport and receive an IP immediately and obviously I can get directly on the cable modem I am using with Rogers with no issue. So can anyone tell me why over the air I can't get an IP? Did I set something up with this XP Pro machine that doesn't seem to have a problem with Vista?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I haven't been wired and years, slightly unsettling!
    Thanks!

Okay I got it. I couldn't get an IP address and so I found another discussion. One person said to do this:
The "Limited or No Connectivity" indication is because the network adapter has failed to get its IP address by DHCP from the router and Windows has defaulted to allocating a "169.254" IP address.
Try repairing the TCP/IP stack and Winsock. Open a Command Prompt window ("Start > Run", type cmd and click OK).
To repair the TCP/IP stack, at the prompt, type...
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    ...and press Enter
(note the spaces in the command line). The original prompt will reappear.
To reset Winsock entries, at the prompt, type...
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    ...and press Enter
Exit the Command Prompt window and reboot the PC.
Well that did it! Off I go!

  • IP 169.x.x.x issue

    Hi!
I have had this problem for a couple of days now. I have followed this instructions: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106879
with no luck. I have reviewed other posts but there's no help there either.
Any ideas of what could be causing this, and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks!

The 169.xxx.xxx address means the Mac can't get an IP address from your Internet provider. It's possible your cable modem has failed. You might need to call your Internet provider for some troubleshooting. Can you try a different Ethernet cable? At least that would eliminate the cable as the problem rather than your Mac or the cable modem. What is your location? Are you anywhere near an Apple retail store? They could help you test your Ethernet port.

  • Virtual Switch adapter getting link-local IP address (apipa)

    Hi Everyone,
Not sure what I am doing wrong here.
I have installed an Hyper-V 2012 R2 core server on a brand new Dell server.
I then went to use Virtual Switch Manager via Hyper-V Manager to create a virtual switch adapter, selected external (I want to share my existing server NIC), allow management operating system to share this network adapter.
Then I configured my virtual machine to use this.
When I start the virtual machine I get a 169 type IP address, cannot ping gateway or host. The VM does not even get a proper IP using DHCP. DHCP is working fine from another physical server.
When I check the hyperv core host and select 8 for  "Network Settings", I get:
    15    192.168.20.44   Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet #5
    22    169.254.101.167 Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter #2
Why is hyperv creating a virtual adapter with an Apipa address which is not usable?
I followed all the steps correctly, but it does not work.
Can anyone point me into the right direction to solve this problem?
    Thanks and regards

  • Airport Choddles My IP Address & Drops Connection

    To echo similar posts...
My PB was working fine, connecting to both my home wireless network and work wireless and wired network until after I installed iTunes 7 and the recent OS updates.
It drops the internet connection in sevreal ways:
    1. I close the lid and re-open to connect back to exactly the same base station and network.
    2. Sporadically disconnecting if I leave it running overnight, although this is a much rarer occurance, annoying all the same.
    3. I connect successfully, well I guess I should qualify that by adding, after a restart, to my work wireless network then go to another part of the building that requires me to plug in an ethernet cable, which works fine, then return to the original wireless network and then no connection.
As I've hinted already, the problem is only solved by restarting my PB and it's getting annoying having to do this 5 or 6 times a day.
The problem seems to be caused by the network prefs not re-allocating a DHCP address to the mac once the original connection (after a restart) is broken. It allocates a 169..*. address and simply refuses to change it. Airport off then on, switching locations, reparing permissions, taking the battery out, etc, etc does absoulutely nothing.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix this annoying problem, please let me know. Although I'm not expecting a flurry of suggestions... I think that Apple needs to sort this one out and quickly as it's hacking off a lot of loyal customers! If it's any consolation, this problem is also appearing on the MacBook Pro discussions...
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) Turbo Fitted

    Andy,
Although I doubt if I can be of much help, I'll say that I've got a very similar problem on my hands as well. Recently, after 18 months of stress-free wireless networking in several locations, I've had all kinds of trouble with it. My wife's new MacBook works without a hitch, but my PB will not maintain a good connection with the router via Airport, if I can get one established at all. I get a variety of error messages about everything from wireless encryption to IP conflicts in what seems like a random fashion. It's been a bear to troubleshoot thus far. Solar flares, perhaps? (only half kidding)
What makes it especially hard for me is that a number of things happened at the same time: new routers at work and home, various system and app updates, etc. I've never had one issue with wireless networking on either of the machines, and now it's a total nightmare. I've had to break out the 50' ethernet cable again until I can get this resolved. I'm close to taking the machine in to the local Apple Store.
If I get anywhere or come across anything that may help, I'll post back here.

  • Many ppl Not being able to connect to internet although wifi connected.

Other forums are recieving many posts a day on this issue, and as I understand it Apple are recieving alot of calls on this issue:
    Description:
Connection to an encrypted wifi network seems succesfull, however when attempting to reach the internet Safari throws up an error - The server could not be contacted - or words to that effect. None of the Internet requiring Apps work although the wifi signal indicator shows signal indicating connection.
When you click on the little blue arrow to the right of the network connection you are connected to, in "Settings > Wifi" you see a self assigned IP Address starting 169.254 and a subnet mask 255.255.0.0, with possibly no DNS if you haven´t manually entered it and no gateway.
    Peculiarities:
1 Problem is widespread, not tied to specific make of router or AP, also it happens to most people on more than one AP or router
2 People with this problem are assigned a 169.254 IP address, Indicating no DCHP lease of an IP address
3 Ive ran a packet capture using wireshark and Air PCAP and seen no packets for a DCHP request.... wierd.. it looks like its not even requesting an IP address..
4 Only seems to happen on networks using some kind of encryption be it WEP, WPA, etc...
5 Although theres bars in the wifi icon that indicate a connection, it cannot be connected to the network, just try and ping your device when its supposedly connected, look at the IP.. it cant be on the network.
6 Even if you manually imput the IP address, sub mask, and gateway IP it still wont work.
7 People with Iphones seem to be able to circumvent this issue or a similar issue by manually selecting the encryption method or changing the encryption method on the router.
8 Issue observerd in varied firmware versions
    Possible Conclusions:
1 The Ipod is selecting the wrong kind of encryption when the enter password dialog box comes up? OR bad key negotiation between IPOD and Router.
Although scenario 1 shouldnt be the case as WPA and WPA2 have to be a certian length etc..
Note: I have tried connecting to the network by manually entering the network details and encryption under Settings > Wifi > Other and still no luck..
    Questions:
Could someone with this issue confirm 1 wheather they are using WEP encryption. 2 weather it works on a non secure router or AP. 3 weather they are imputting the full HEX key or a passphrase?
I get the feeling if you use the full hex key it may work, ive seen posts around about having to make it recognise that you are using HEX by appending a $ sign to the start of the key.. although i dont know how true this is.
I have no access to the router that dosent work for me.. so cant do tests as my home one works on all encryption methods, but ive seen about 5 Routers and AP´s so far that wont work.. all using WEP..
    NOTE
On one specific AP I connect with my Ipod and get no IP from DHCP so no internet, yet my colleague sitting right next to me with an iPhone gets a DHCP assigned IP and is surfing away no probs! it even automatically connects, and im very jealous..!
    Anyone got any ideas?

This happened to my ipod touch recently, on my own network--it worked the night before, but not the next morning (even though I had a full wireless connection on the touch). I had to 'forget' that network and re-add it (including WEP) and then I was able to re-connect. no idea why this occured, but that did the trick. So far, I've only had to do that once...
