16GB USB Memory Stick

Hi All,
I have just bought a 16Gb USB memory key.
Reformatted it for Mac, and it is working well on my PB G4.
When I connect it to my iMac Intel (OS.X), it appears on the finder but the spead of transfer of data is incredibly slow. (10x slower at least than on the Power book).
Can someone please help?
Many thanks.

You probably have not repartitioned it before formatting. Do this:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your flash drive's main entry (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Mac's are very very particular about the Ram they use. Mac's historiclly only seem to like top of the line when it comes to Ram.

  • FYI - Just purchased 16GB USB2 memory stick to boot my MacBook Air

    FYI...
Have used SuperDuper! 2.5 to clone my internal boot SSD to a 16GB USB2 memory stick. It was successful and a subsequent boot from this USB2 memory stick went smoothly without issues - although it was just a tad slow in booting compared to the SSD.
This will be my safety boot drive while away from office/home in the event my internal SSD misbehaves or gets corrupted.

The 16GB memory stick is an A-Data brand. P/N 75IC160020 and the packaging states "Data Retention: Up to 10 years".
The issues about the memory stick fitting into the narrow spaced USB port on the MBA is problematic. It kinda of fits but does not seat down completely. I have to shave off a small amount of material around the memory stick's protruding USB connector so that it can seat down properly. I have not done this yet and use a USB2 hub for booting from the memory stick.
I can write to the memory stick at a steady 5.3 MBytes/sec with the occasional spike up to 6.4 MBytes/sec.

  • I'm new to apple after years of MS OS! How do I transfer files from my USB memory stick to another USB memory stick? cheers

hi all, i've just switched to apple after many years using MS OS!  I'm now using iMac desktop 21.5" with 2.9GHz processor and latest Yosemite software.
How do I transfer files from one USB memory stick to another USB memory stick on the iMac?  cheers, linley94

Plug in the memory stick and it should open then create a New Folder and drag and drop the contents from the memory stick to the new folder you created. Remove the original memory stick all the information should be in the new folder you created. Now plug in the new memory stick with nothing on it when it opens drag the folder with the contents from the original memory stick folder and all into the new memory stick that opened and there you have it.

  • Usb memory sticks

Hi I have several 2 GB usb memory sticks. I use them to carry Keynote/Powerpoint presentations to different venues as backup. Recently I have noticed when transferring files from my new iMac that I keep getting the message that the memory is full on the memory stick despite moving lots of old presentations to trash. I don't understand this as it works with my iBook and my work windows laptop. It's a mystery. Can anybody shed any light on this?
    Thanks Tim

  • Auto Start Up when installing a usb memory stick into a usb port on the computer

Whenever I install a usb memory stick into my computer the Photoshop Album Starter Edition program begins running. How do I stop this from happening?

    Phil,
I am not running the Starter Edition, but actually another version. However, since no one else has responded I will post what I think will work for the Starter Edition.
Look in your System Tray at the bottom right of your monitor. You should see a Camera icon that when you move near it will say Adobe Photo Downloader. Right click on the camera icon and you will probably have a choice of Disable - click on it.

I have photos on a USB memory stick which I want to put onto my iPad. I bought the USB adaptor but for some reason the iPad is not recognising the memory stick.  Can anyone help? Thank you

You need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them. But a lot of USB memory sticks need more power than is supplied to the kit, so you may need a powered hub between it and kit.

  • Problems reading USB memory sticks with OS 10.9

Cannot read USB memory sticks with current version of OS 10.9.1 that I previously read without any problem.  What gives?  Any way to fix this problem?  I have lots of work and other material saved on the memory sticks that I need access to this quarter.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

  • OS X Snow Leopard install from (non-boot) USB memory stick

    oi~
just bought this second hand and after i finally got into it (the seller forgot name/password) it turns out the DVD drive is malfunctioning, i was able to watch part of a movie but it will not boot from it nor let me install from DVD. (seller is not calling me back or responding to anything i sent) bottom-line for now i can live without the DVD drive but i would like to install OS X Snow Leopard.. can i copy the DVD contents onto a 8 GB USB memory stick (using a Vista pc) and install from the USB stick ? it does not have to be bootable as i realize to do that you must use the Mac.
i also have a old(er) iMac, maybe i can use that copy copy contents (if it even reads DVD's)
    any help appreciated.. thanks.

    thanks..
i thought i put my model # in my info, it's a MB061LL/B (Apple MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13") darn... i keep getting stuck when i think i have a solution. so copying the contents of the disc to a network pc will not work either. or, could i make the
USB stick bootable and copy contents using a old iMac ?
added: i might be able to borrow a MacBook w/ a working DVD player.. is it a fairly quick and painless process to create a bootable USB stick + put OS X Snow Leopard on it ? (i'm rusty when it comes to Mac..)

  • When i download my pictures to a usb memory stick in jpeg format other computers cannot open them can someone help me to sort this please thanks from a new iMac user

when i download my pictures (in jpeg format) to a usb memory stick they cannot be opened on another computer ie not a mac, do i need to convert the file so that other computers can read it thanks Sam

    Sam,
Format your stick with MS-DOS (FAT32) format. I use camera CF cards as memory stick and a good practice is to regularly format them: it deals with defragmentation effectively.
JPG is a standard, regardless of which application writes it and is readable by all applications supporting JPG.
Make sure you properly eject your usb stick when you take the it out of the usb port: it makes sure the OS closes all open files.

  • Problems using USB memory sticks

Whenever i connect a memory stick with my macbook and try to delete a file off it, the file is moved to trash which is all well and good. But when i go to put anything back on it a message pops up saying that the memory is full.
Both times when i've encountered this problem i'd filled the memory stick with pictures and moved them onto a microsoft computer. Then i connected the memory stick back with my macbook and deleted all the photos from the stick by moving them to the trash can. When i go to put another load of pictures on it says its full. But there are no files on the stick!
Both times the USB memory stick can't be used, i've tried looking for any files on the microsoft computer but that can't find any or save anything to it.
Does anyone know anyway i can stop this problem and somehow get the memory stick to work again?

    Hi
Try reformatting your memory stick using Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. If you want to move files between OS X and Windows then you'll need to select FAT 32 format.
You may find you need to reformat the stick each time you copy a batch of photos from one machine to another.

  • Is there a problem with USB Memory Sticks and OSX?

This may not be the correct forum for this question but I don't know where else to ask!
I am having problems with a 64GB USB Memory Stick. Acrobat Reader can't read a pdf file on the memory stick but no problem from the hard drive. Acrobat Reader won't work from the memory stick. Music files (aif) won't play from the memory stick.
The memory stick came formatted for MS-DOS but I re-formatted it to MAC-OS Extended. I can write files to it but they don't seem to work from there. Is there some incompatability with OSX that I am not aware of? I would welcome some advice.

MAke sure the drive is inserted and mounted, then launch Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.  Type:
    mount
    and hit Enter.
One of the lines returned will contain the words, "/Volumes/<name of your flash drive>".  Copy that whole line and paste it here so we can see what's up.

  • Size restrictions for USB memory sticks?

    Hi out there,
are there any known size restrictions for the use of USB memory sticks with Mac OS X?
I bought two 32 GByte (noname) USB memory sticks to "mobilize" my iTunes-library. I formatted it without errors (believing what the DiskUtility-application told me) and copied my files to one stick. But only about 4 GByte of data where able to be opened after copying. The other files where shown in the directories with their correct sizes (I compared them to the originals on my harddisk) but couldn'd be opened.
I tried copying them a second time, using the second 32 GByte stick - but same behaviour as on stick one.
Next I tried to format both sticks with the DiskUtility using the option "writing zeros in seven runs" and then tested data integrity with the TechTool-Pro application (surface test, random read and write). Both showed no errors on the sticks. But copying my library again to the sticks showed no diffrent behaviour as before. The first few copied GByte (I think about 4 GByte) could be opened by iTunes, but the rest "is only there".
    Any idea what's going wrong?
    Greeting from Germany
