16mm film to Digital (Flicker Problem)

I am transferring 16mm film by projecting it to a screen and then capturing it with a Cannon  XL2,
These are very old family films that are not the greatest quality to start with so quality is not an issue.
We just want to keep the old movies but not to go to the expense of having it done professionally.
We can even live with the flicker but if there is a way to reduce it some, that would be nice.
I have searched the forum but all of the posts dealing with flicker are old, like 2006 or so.
I am wondering if FCPX has some kind of filter available that would help.
Thanks for any input.
Jac

a) a projection usually creates issues with socalled 'hot spotting' - that's easy to fix in post
b) projection and video-cam are never in synch - which creates flicker; theoretically, you could try to set the projector to 30fps, and slow down the 'Keystone Cops'-effects in post. but your cam is electronics (and, to be precise 29.97), a projector is mechanics ... never in synch, neverever .......
c) your camera records 'lines' of pixel - which could miss part of the frame, which is fully projected; this creates the annoying 'running bars' - so, the shutter speed of your cam has to be 1/30 (if 30fps projected). And has to be in synch with your projection ....

all that would be 'solved' if done professionally - no projection, but each frame gets scanned = time/costs.
I remember a product, kinda box, two holes, one for pointing your cam into it, the other to 'beam' into with your projector; the tiny 'screen' inside was sort of 'phosphorized' material which had a split-second of 'afterglow'  .... came up in the 80ies, when first home-video-cams appeared, and people tried to transfer their 8mm stuff; perhaps you can find such a Magic Box (no idea, what the correct term is/was) in some garage-sale ......

  • I have had some 16mm film converted to digital format. Photoshop displays it ok. Then when I save

I have had some 16mm film converted to digital format avi 190 by 1080 pixels, 72 pixels/inch. Photoshop displays it ok. Then when I save the file as a psd, the quality of the video displayed deteriorates when I bring the file up to work on it. Then no matter how it is rendered, it deteriates further. I am using a windows 7 computer. I have tried this with an Nvidia Quatro 1800 card and an Nvidia Gforce 760 card.
Why does not photoshop at least keep the quality of the video as origional in a psd file? I can understand offering to degrade the display for faster display, but not the rendering degradation. I have tried H.264 High Quality and DPX full range 8 bit, they both degrade the quality, even though the origional avi file is an 8 bit depth, the others degrad the colors considerably.
I have worked on this for several months and am very disappointed in photoshop 6.
Where can I get information on what is going on in photoshop 6 as to how to control how it saves a file and more control of the color depth?

You may want to post this to the Premiere Pro forum as this may fall under 'video/film issues' (just a guess). Someone there may have had similar experiances.

  • Best export settings for digitized 16mm film to vimeo

I had my black and white 16mm film digitized with the following settings:
HD frame rate of 1080psf 23.98
HD compression with the Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) Higher Quality
Standard def 23.98 frame rate (HD Conform or DFS Film Out)
    4x3 aspect ratio
    NTSC
I want to upload the finished product to Vimeo so I can start showing festivals my finished product. However, when I use PrPro's CS6 Vimeo settings, I can't seem to get a file that looks decent—it always looks incredibly pixelated. I've played around with higher frame rates (and higher settings on everything) but it doesn't seem to look much better. Right now I'm using H.264. Should I be using a different codec? Please help!

  • 16mm film digital transfer question

    Hi...
I've been reading posts for several days trying to figure this out myself, but I'm a newbie.
I was wondering if anyone could give me the preferred specs for transferring 16mm and 8mm film to digital files in order to use in Final Cut Express. I don't think HD is necessary but I want it in the best quality to edit in FCE.
    1. What do I ask for from the transfer company, Apple Pro Res 422? What would the technical specs, codecs be?
    2. Can anybody recommend the best company on the east coast or otherwise.
    Thanks in advance!
    JP

Hello, and welcome to the Apple Discussion forums.
If you are using Final Cut Express, there are 2 choices:
    • QuickTime/DV-NTSC .mov files
    • QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 or 1080i60 .mov files
    Some considerations:
16mm film is 4:3 aspect ratio; 8mm film is close but not exactly 4:3; DV is 4:3 aspect ratio - so using QT/DV-NTSC fits nicely
Apple Intermediate Codec is intended for 16:9 (widescreen) HD video but it may give you slightly better visual results, although you would wind up with pillarboxed video (4:3 in a 16:9 frame). Ask your vendor to provide a small sample file in both QT/DV and QT/AIC and compare the results before committing to the conversion.
ProRes is not supported in Final Cut Express.

  • Film to Digital Video, a good method?

I'm considering buying a Film camera, possibly a used Arriflex Super 16, rather than spending alot more on a comparable HD camera. My only dillemma is transfering the film to digital. I read on a different forum that you can get decent transfer quality by projecting the film in a darkroom and recording it with a 3CCD digital, in my case a GL-2. The only problem being 24fps to 30fps, and the continuity of the sound. Anyone have any suggestions or cheaper solutions to make this work? Or should I just go top notch HD?

    Hi Loyed,
before buying an HD CAMERA (HVX 200) over a year ago I considered to buy a 16mm camera: Aaton
    A-Minima.
    http://www.aaton.com/products/film/aminima/
Small, manageble not immensily exspensive and obviousely a decent 16mm with a still useful 50fps capability. However, considering all extra expenses (lenses, accessories, telecine transfers bla bla bla) I realised that it would have costed me a super
    fortune.
Quite happy with DVCPRO HD at the moment and when I need Super 16, well...if the poduction can afford it then hire is the best choice!
    To the OP,
Should you decide to go ahead buying a 16mm camera I suggest you to look for a great manual for Cinematographers which is called:
HANDS-ON, *MANUAL FOR CINEMATOGRAPHERS* by David Samuelson
A bit techy but invaluable resource as you progress with your Cine camera.

  • 16mm film in FCP - sound synch.

I am making a working edit of a 16mm film in FCP. Once complete the EDL will
be used by a neg cutter and the project will be finished as 16mm show print.
All the sound was recorded wild and although most is not in need of a tight
synch. there are short spoken sections that must be lip synched.
In FCP we have both video and audio, but the runs faster than the audio and
    a lip synch. is impossible.
We telecined to DigiBeta but also laid the picture off to DVCam (with TC and
Frame Numbers in pic.). We captured from the DVCam into FCP. In ignorance we
did not pay attention to the capture rate or the frame rate of our sequence,
so used 25 frames for both. We want to do as much work in FCP as possible to
produce a sound track mixed down onto DAT for the production of a optical
soundtrack neg. FCP is helping us make decisions for the neg. cutter but is
not usuable as a guide to edit the audio.
This may be a problem of our own making but any advice as to how to get out
of this impasse would be much appreciated.
    G4-dual 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Many thanks.
We telecined to PAL video (UK). Does this still use 3:2 pulldown? or a different system? Cinema tools doesn't offer Reverse Telecine for changing PAL 25 fps to 24 fps, but it does have a Conform tool which allows me to do something similar (I think). Will this have the same effect and bring the video back to match the film and audio speed as it was recorded (24fps)?
If you are going to cut the negative you'll need
something more than an EDL. EDLs track the xfer tape
timecode, you need to give the negative cutter
keycode number from the negative. You can xfer with
keycode burn in for this. Is that what you did? Talk
to your negative cutter and see what they want.
Yes I think we did. We have two counters burnt in vision on our DVCam dub. One is TC (from the telecine) the other has the suffix FN (frame number?). We will talk with our TX guy for confirmation. However these FN numbers do not appear in the FCP EDL - is it possible to generate an EDL in FCP that references the frame numbers/Keycode?
Again thanks, any more info on using Cinema Tools with PAL material would be welcome.

  • 16mm film transfer to mini DV tape

I feel a little embarrassed about asking this question, as I have asked it before last year but can't remember how to fix the problem and can't find the print out of the answer,so here goes again.
I have had some 16mm film shot at 16fps transferred to tape After capturing the footage into PE 3 I need to change the speed to 24fps to match other film transfers I have captured.
I remember it involves open the "INTERPRET" frames I think but I can not find this option.
So I am hoping the kind person who answered my question before is still reading the Forum.

    HI steve and Junoflydog,
Thank you for your replies to me question.
Juno, I did as you suggested and it worked fine, thank you for your help.
Steve, applying Frame Blend did nothing to correct the problem, I entered Frame Blen into PE3 Help (keyboard) got no result as what it is used for.
As I am thinking of going up to PE7 I was looking for books PE7 and found your "The Muvipix.cpm Guide to PE7, looking inside in the Index under "I" i saw Interpret Footage I entered that into Help no result, although I have been able ti fix my problem using Time Stretch I"m annoyed that I can not correct the speed of my clip as I did last year from a reply in this forum. I clicked somewhere a windo oped asking to enter FPS and bingo it was fixed.
I thank you again for your help.

  • Light Flicker Problems

    Hi There,
I've been having some problems concerning a video I'm making. After importing all the Video I've noticed a flicker problem on the image. Its almost like a very small glow of light that is that is constantly flickering. The footage was filmed in the U.S and edited in the UK, so not sure if its to do with the difference in Hz from the ceiling lights or if theres an uneven exposure from the camera? If theres anyone who would know how to minimalise the flicker problem on Final Cut Pro it would be a big help.
    Many Thanks
    Matt

There most certainly could be a frequency problem with lights. Are they flourescent or sodium lights? Those kind of lights do pulse and are more problematic when used in slo motion captured material.
Also you can get problems with these lights with shuttered movie cameras and telecining to tape. Throw in the NTSC > PAL conversion will only exacerbate the problem!
Can you post an example clip?
The flicker filter in FCP won't help as that only corrects interlace problems.

    Log Message:
    - Fix flicker problem with constraint bound text that is being autoSized.  If the remeasure is done in a 2nd pass you will see a flicker as all the objects are moved to accommodate the reflowed text.
    - Fix data binding issue with text setter.
    - Rework measure() to accommodate implicit autoSize.
If explicitWidth or widthInChars specified and explicitHeight or heightInLines specified, or for now, blockProgression != "tb", the text has fixed dimensions and is not auto-sized.
If no text and width specified, but no height, start at specified width and one line high and grow taller.
If no text and height specified, start at 1 char wide with the specified height and grow wider.
If neither width nor height specified, and toFit lineBreaks, start at explicitMaxWidth, or default maxWidth of 160, and grow taller.
If neither width nor height specified, and explicit lineBreaks width is unlimited and can grow taller.
These are further constrained by min/max Width and Height except in the case that explicitWidth or explicitHeight are specified.
    - Change default maxWidth for RichText and SimpleText to 160 to match RET.  Previously it was 10000.  This is used for
text with toFit lineBreaks if a width isn't specified.
QA Notes: 12 or so TextGraphic tests fail because of the new default maxWidth.

  • Macbook pro retina screen flicking problem

I bought this 15 inches Macbook pro back in Nov, 2012. And I have the screen flicking problem in Dec.
The problem is the same here listed on youtube. You can find hundres of them just by searching "retina flicker" on youtube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko6WCqw20ZE
And I did a lot of researches on this. I had also gone to the Apple Store 2 times, one Genius Bar Staff told me this has to be a hardware problem and offer to fix my laptop, others said it might be a software based problem and adviced me to wait for the new system update. I don't have time for a long fixing so I chose waiting. That particular one who told me to wait for the next software update also encourage me to dig deep and tried to find the root cause by myself...and I did. I found my screen flicking problem could caused by cellphone inteference. And It seems that the Wi-Fi antena is also a key component here. If I turn off Wi-Fi completely, the flickering went away.
    Some solutions I found online
    1. It can caused by Enable Safari webGL. So disable webGL and turn off develop mode
    2. Disable displaycard auto switch in Power saving tab
    3. Close the lid put the sytem into sleep and re-open the lid
    4. stop using Wi-Fi. That's right people, try disable Wi-Fi!! It's the only working solution for me.
    5. It could be caused by CDMA cellphones including US Verizon brand cellphones and many others. GSM cellphones are OK. Try to turn off your cellphone or drive to a empty plaza and try to see your laptop still flickering at your car. Turn off your cellphone when You do this.
    What doesn't work
    Reboot
    reinstall OS
go to Apple Store and change Logic Board (Someone reported that after logic board change, the problem came back after a while)
Let me know if you guys have any findings, Thanks!!

I'm sure that you've seen the problem with 'burn-in' and 'ghosting' on some MBP-R machines in threads on this forum. It doesn't seem to be an overwhelming problem, but some have reported it.
Did you buy it from an Apple Store or online? Either way, you need to get tough with Apple. Tell them you need to keep your computer and, when they deliver a replacement to your local Apple Store, you'll bring it in for exchange. That's what they've been doing with most people that have had MBP-R problems - I've never heard of them requesting that you send your computer back before they will exchange. Did you contact your local Apple Store or was this response from an AppleCare phone conversation. If the latter, take it into the Apple Store, explain what you want to do, and I'm sure that they will work with you.
    Good luck,

  • Digital Noise Problem on AA 1.5

    Adobe Audition 1.5
Lately I have noticed that just by opening a track within Adobe Audition, that process "creates" or embeds digital noise within the song.
I have tested this problem a few times by listening to the song before opening it within Audition. Beforehand, the song plays without digital noise, and after it has been opened within Audition, the noise appears. This digital noise is hard to describe, it's short in length of time, about 1-2 seconds, and will appear at least once within whatever song is being tested.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Audition to see if this would solve the problem, but to my surprise, the exact same digital noise problem remained within the reinstalled version of program. In the past, AA 1.5 has worked okay without this problem.
It's also worth noting that when I reinstalled the program, I successfully entered my program key, and I am "not" running the program in demonstration mode.
I am planning on upgrading to Adobe Audition 3, but the upgrade uses a previous version as a platform on which to upgrade to version 3.
The concern is that this digital noise will "survive" in version 3 of the program.
Thanks for any tips or ways to eliminate the digital noise (besides reinstalling the program), even within Adobe Audition 1.5 for the time being.

The brief digital noise "replaces" or interrupts the song and does not mix together with it.
I have been saving the songs in .wav format.
I operate AA in virtual mode on Windows XP within a Mac computer, and now I have also discovered the same
digital noise on another sound program within a song on the Mac side.
I appreciate that this isn't a Mac forum, but I found a bulletin from Apple about noise issues with my current G5 computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2033?viewlocale=en_US
Perhaps this is good timing as I am preparing to buy a new Mac Pro, and this one has an Intel processor so I'll be
able to run Windows and Adobe Audition natively.
Thanks to all for the insightful comments and help.

  • MacBook Flicker Problem - on Leopard?

    Hi!
Just to see any possible solutions, if anybody with the flicker problem has the possibility to install the OS X 10.5 (Leopard), please let us know if the flicker is present also on Leopard.
As far as I saw by now, it happens under Windows XP in BootCamp with various users.
    Thanks!
    Cristian.

Your right checking a bug would be OK. Problem is they couldn't tell us about it because it involves Leopard, that is where the NDA applies. Also there is a lot of time between now and October so even if it existed at this moment it may not still be there in October when Leopard is released.
I guess I have been lucky I haven't had the flicker problem.
