16x9 and 4x3

i have a clip that i rendered in After Effects 854x480 then brought into Apple Compressor and made a 2 pass 16x9 mpeg. How do I tell DVD studio pro to play this movie 16x9 on a widescrean TV and 4x3 letterbox on a regular TV? please help and if you can can you give me steps by step?

John
Select the track and go to the Inspector Window. Look for the Display Mode property and set it to 16:9 letterbox.
That makes the work !
Hope that helps !

  • Beginner question: can i have 16x9 and 4x3 footage on the same timeline?

    Hi,
I am assembling a highlight promo reel for somebody and i have 16x9 and 4x3 footage. not sure what to do or which footage to convert, since i need them both for the promo. any suggestions would be appreciated, or please direct me to a past discussion.
    thank you
    -shelby

If the majority of your footage is 4:3 work in a Timeline that is 4:3.
Your 16:9 footage will letterbox automatically to fit with black bars at top and bottom.
You could also cache the 4:3 material with the Widescreen filter to fake a 16:9 look.
If the majority is 16:9, use a 16:9 Timeline. Your 4:3 footage will pillarbox -black bars at left and right.
You could fill that area in by placing a copy of the 4:3 above itself on the Timeline. Enlarge and blur the lower layer to give your clip a complimentary "border". Simply blowing up 4:3 video to fit a 16:9 Timeline will make it look horrible.

  • 16x9 and 4x3 mind blowing weirdness

    I'm stumped.
I have a DVD project containing both 16x9 and 4x3 material. All are in separate tracks, no mixing of the different aspects in the same track. When I click on each track, the info is correct. 4x3 material is flagged as 4x3, it displays full screen in the 4x3 simulation and pillar boxed in the 16x9 simulation. Same with the 16x9 material. It all looks right in DVDSP.
Then I play the disc in both a 16x9 TV and a 4x3 TV. On the 16x9 set, the 16x9 material looks fine, it fills the screen. But the 4x3 material also fills screen and is therefore stretched horizontally, making everyone short and fat.
Of equal bummerness, on the 4x3 TV, the 16x9 material fills the frame , and is therefore stretched vertically, making everyone tall and skinny.
I've set the display mode for 16x9 assets to 16x9 letterbox and 4x3 assets to 4x3.
What the heck am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your help on this by the way!
    Good experiment. Here's what happened...
I made a disc with just a single 4x3 asset. Into the DVD player, and it still filled the full 16x9 screen... distorted.
So I did the unthinkable... I pulled out my TV manual. There are 4 settings for the screen aspect. "normal" "full" "zoom" and "wide zoom". There's also an "autowide" function. Which is now and always has been , on.
The autowide function seems to work fine when watching TV. I switch to a channel that's 4x3, the screen displays 4x3, and when I click the screen button, it says the setting is "normal". Then I switch to an HD channel, the picture goes wide, and I click the button and it's changed to "full". So it appears the TV is switching properly, based on the input, at least when it comes to TV.
the same doesn't appear to hold true for the DVD player. I have to manually set the screen to "full" and then 16x9 material looks right, then when the 4x3 comes on, I have to set it to "normal" and it looks right.
So, either the "autowide" setting on the TV is not getting information from the DVD player about aspect (in which case is it the DVD player or the disc I made?) or the "autowide" function just simply doesn't work with DVDs and you always have to manually set the screen.
And... I still don't know why my 16x9 "letterbox" assets played vertically stretched, filling the screen on a 4x3 TV.
Does this help you at all? I'm still stumped... but again, thanks for sticking with me!

  • 16X9 and 4X3 question

    OK...
I'm sure this question has been asked a million times but here goes...
I have DVCPRO50 anamorphic footage. When the disc is authored I want it to play 16X9 on 16X9 monitors and 4X3 lttr box on 4X3 monitors.
Is this a player specific thing?
    What settings do I use?
    Is this possible?
    Joel

yes, when you encode your raw footage for DVD, flag it in compressor or whatever encoder as 16x9.
like this, on 16x9 monitors it will be 16x9 and on 4x3 monitor it will be 4x3 letterboxed.
if you do compress it your footage using 4x3. it will look anamorphic
hope that helps and if you need more specific info, let us know

  • How to save HD in 16x9 and not 4x3?

I have a Sony HDR-HC1 and have created an movie in iMovie 6, importing video in the HDV format (16x9). No matter what I try, including "fixes" already posted, I cannot save the movie, in any format tried, in that aspect ratio. I only get 4x3. Any known fixes?

Now I'm completely confused as to what you're trying to do.
    - "share to iDVD" works perfectly for me. I get a 16x9 project.
    - If I change the aspect ratio in QT Pro, and import that into iDVD, that works as well.
    - I also just tried choosing "Share > Quicktime > Expert settings" and choosing "Apple Intermediate Codec" "Preset: other / Current Frame Rate" and setting the size to 1920x1080, and exporting that. That also plays correctly, and doesn't require QT Pro, if that's a problem; the pixel stretching is done on export for you.
You mention .dv; HD projects are not DV, so if you're selecting that as the export format, that'd be a problem. HD projects are natively in Apple Intermediate Codec format.

  • 16x9 fullscreen and 4x3 letterbox (once and for all)

Ok, I have seen this subject posted many times with varying answers. So here is my project. I am editing DV anamorphic footage in a DV anamorphic sequence in FCP. I want to burn a DVD in DVDSP so that it fills a widescreen TV, and letterboxes on a 4x3 tv. 1.) what settings do I export my movie in from FCP, then what settings do I need to use in compressor (because it will take further compression than what DVDSP will do) and what do I ned to do in DVDSP in order to make this possible?

From Final Cut, if you're going the File > Export > QT Movie route, use current settings and select DVDSP Markers. Or, use the Export Using Compressor option.
In Compressor, use the appropriate (for you program length) 16:9 setting.
In DVDSP, set the Display Mode for the track(s) in question to be: 16:9 Letterbox.

  • 16x9 to 4x3 Pan and Scan

I have DVCPRO HD 1080p24 timeline at 23.98. The movie is 2:35, widescreen. I need to Pan and Scan it to a 4x3 image while still preserving the HD quality. My distributor wants a 4x3 full frame tape.
    How do I do this?
I realize I have to cut parts of my image off but I don't see any 4x3 guide in FCP to be able to see the lines. The title safe is not accurate 4x3. There is not 4x3 filter. What do I do?

Verbatim from the reputable distributor: "HD 4X3 Full Frame: one (1) individually manufactured (conversion not accepted) 4x3 (1.33) HD videotape fully panned and scanned as necessary to bring the action into the "TV safe" area from film-to-tape transfers, utilizing the timed wetgate 35mm IP (struck from the finished original picture negative) and the appropriate stereo composite track on channels 1 & 2 and stereo M&E on channels 3&4.
You guys are saying I can't put a 4x3 image at HD quality on an HD came tape? Why can't I preserve the quality and just adjust the framing with pan and scanning?
    Please explain.

  • Clue me in on working with 16x9 and it's various formats.

I finally decided to delve into the 16x9 formats that our camera has (DSR-450). I am NOT shooting HD, these are all in SD being recorded in DVCAM format. All formats actually record in 29.97.
We have the ability to choose:
    16x9 I Drop Frame
    16x9 24p 2.3 Pull Down Drop Frame
    16x9 24p 2.3.3.2 Pull Down Non-Drop Frame
    16x9 24p PsF No-pull DF
16x9 I is pretty self explanatory. FCP doesn't see it as such, but if I check off anamorphic, it's all good.
For the 24p 2.3 and 2.3.3.2 I know the pull down happens in teh camera as it goes to tape and they're really 29.97. When I bring them into FCP, should I leave them as 29.97 or should I pull them back up to 24p. Output will eventually end up in a 4x3 letterboxed format, but I'd like to know how to do a reverse pull-down jsut in case ... so How do I do it? Interestingly enough, for both of those formats FCP knows to make them anamorphic.
And Finally, 24p PsF. This format, I cannot grasp how it works, I'm lost. Camera tells me that it's 24 progressive frames with no pull down, FCP tells me that it's 29.97. Which is correct and how do I work with it?
Side note question: Why does my DSR-45 automatically know to change to 16x9 but not my monitors?
    Thanks!

Download and install this version, which should have been on Lion already. May have been overwritten if you installed the CD version.

  • Import 16x9 from 4x3 camera MiniDV

I have footage shot in 16x9 on a Canon camera. I want to import with an older Sony camera that is 4x3. Will this work?
Reason: Canon firewire port stopped working and causes any Mac it's connected to to freeze/crash.

How does it look on the Sony camera? It really would help to know what the camera model is. Make sure you you use a DV NTSC anamorphic preset.

  • How to crop 16x9 to 4x3  ?

I have some footage which is 16x9. I need to crop to 4x3. Please tell me how. Thank You.
    ALen E. Reed

as david showed... there are many other solutions... here are two ideas…
with the little info you gave (what fcp u r working in, dv/hd/other, etc) here are some thoughts:
in the canvas window, (turn on/click) image + wireframe and show tile safe (so you can see results in canvas window).
In the Viewer window go to the Motion tab.
1 (under basic motion) you can scale down the footage to keep the full frame in play (it will letter box the footage)
    or
2 In the Viewer window go to the Motion tab.
(under crop) you can crop the left and right of the image.

  • Can't convert 16x9 to 4x3

I created a 39min 16x9 video using iMovie HD 6 with 16x9 footage from an HD video camera combined with still images and music. I have shared this with iDVD successfully to create a widescreen video. My in-laws do not have a widescreen TV so I am trying to share the movie from iMovie to QuickTime, converting it to NTSC 720x480, retaining proportions, using Letterbox. No errors get reported and the first 16 minutes of the video look great. However, after the first 16 minutes, the video image freezes while the rest of the audio track keeps playing for the full 39 minutes. The finished file is 629MB in size and the codec that quicktime uses was Integer H.264. My understanding was that QuickTime pro can handle up to 6GB...
Does anyone have any idea what is preventing the rest of the video portion from being converted? Is there a size limit? Would a different CODEC work? I have plenty of available disc space since I have a 1.5TB RAID (3 x 500GB with the largest sector sizes possible) so it can't be that. I also have 4GB RAM on this MacBook Pro so it can't be a lack of RAM.

It read direct from the DVD I had generated with iDVD and I chose the option to convert to 720x480 NTSC DV
Oh, I thought your input was from a HD source. I'm not sure if MPEG Streamclip handles HD aspect ratios automatically.
Anyway, with SD iDVD-generated input you can just follow the instructions in the previous link.
The 4x3 DV files generated are squished to that size horizontally rather than being letterboxed
Did you follow the instructions to the letter?
Notice that .dv uses rectangular pixels so some apps may display a weird aspect ratio although everything is OK. iMovie and a TV should automatically scale it to the correct proportions. Where are your evaluating the aspect ratio?

  • Final cut express-changing 16X9 to 4X3

Can't figure out how to change the aspect ratio in my canvas.  Large black bars appear on top and bottom of frame.  Any thoughts?

    NO
Then You've not been careful enough.
Browser Window ! (window with the Sequens/Bins/Captured material etc)
And You see that there are a number of Columns ?
Keep on going to the right - And there it is.
It's the same in FinalCut Express !
I got FinalCut Express from 1 to 4.0.1 and FinalCut Pro to v. 6 - and on the later ones as from FCE 3 and FCP 3 or 4 there is this column.
Must be set to get 16x9 or un-selected to get back to 4x3.

  • Transfer Ana. 16x9 into 4x3 Letterboxed Sequence?!

I've done this in the past and for the life of me can't remember how!
All I want to do is transfer an Anamorphically shot and edited sequence into a 4x3 Sequence (so then it would be Letterboxed), to be able to export into as a 4x3 320 x 240 QT file.
I keep thinking that dragging the nested 16x9 sequnce into a 4x3 sequnce will work, but it doesn't.
Any help of info is much appreciated!

That's very odd that dragging the 16:9 sequence (into the 4:3 sequence) doesn't letterbox. I used to do this on almost a weekly basis and never had a hiccup.
Anyhow, any luck doing an Insert/Overwrite Sequence Content?
That is, drag the 16:9 sequence from the Browser into the 4:3 sequence as you would normally. But press and hold the Command key, then release the mouse button. You should see your sequence contents (aka the clips 'n stuff) in your 4:3 sequence. And they should be letterboxed.
If the clips aren't letterboxed, you might have some type of sequence corruption. Trying all this with a fresh 4:3 sequence might do the trick.

  • 16x9 and Standard Definition

Is it possible for FCE HD (or 3.5) to create a movie in 16x9 with Standard Definition (not HD)?

    Hi(Bonjour) Larry,
If you put a 4-3 clip in a 16-9 sequence, you will get an image not large enough to fill the entire width of the screen (we call this pillar box).
If you scale it unproportionnaly to fit the entire screen, you'll get a stretched image . If you scale it proportionnaly, you'll get an image cropped in top and bottom with much lost of resolution.I'm sure that you do not want those results.
Keyframing is a way to adjust (and varying) some settings over the time (motion, position, filter-in fce3.5- etc). It's not intended to stretch the image for all your sequence. For this you don't have to use keyframe. Just set scale (motion tab in clip viewer) to something that fit your needs, and voilà.
To get true 16:9 with DV resolution, you must shoot in 16-9 if your camcorder allows this operation.

  • Anamorphic and 4x3

i have a sequence that has 4x3 footage in it , and i'm getting additional footage in anamorphic can i mix the two formates in the same sequence? or should i get the footage transphered to 4x3 letterbox?

you should be able to just pop the tape into the camera/deck you normally use, and not have to change any settings. IF, however, FCP distorts it, go into "distort" in the motion tab and subtract 33.33 from whatever number is there.
Or maybe it's add 33.33. I get confused.
