16x9 in DV canvas?

I shot 16x9 widescreen DV with a Sony 450 and imported the footage with the DV easy setup. The viewer window adjusted to widescreen, but when I put clips on the timeline, the canvas showed letterboxing. I then exported to Compressor preset 60 minutes high quality widescreen, then opened DVDSP2 and imported the assets, but the viewer showed the letterbox. When I burned, the widescreen was letterboxed as well.
I cannot find a wat to change my canvas to 16x9 widescreen; it defaults to 4x3. How can I change the setting to achieve true 16x9 DVD playback?

First, to correct your Canvas issue...
With your sequence active in the Timeline - or selected in the Browser - press Command-0 to bring up the Sequence Settings dialog
Check the box for Anamorphic 16:9, then click OK.
Now all your footage will be stretched. To fix this...
Press Command-A to select all your clips
Press Option-Commad-V to bring up the Remove Attributes dialog
Select Distort from the left-hand side Video options, then click OK
You should be good to go (as in, you should be able to export to Compressor, then import into DVDSP 2 without issue)
One caveat: if you've created any Freeze Frames from the Timeline, those will have to be recreated.

  • Converting cropped 4X3 video to native 16X9 in Final Cut Pro 5

I short a short on the Panasonic DVX-100A in the cropped widescreen mode, which is essentially still a 4X3 image with black bars. I want to convert it to a native widescreen 16X9 file so I can transfer it to Beta for festivals. Does anyone know how to do this in FCP5? I would really appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks.

    Erik,
You could avoid scaling and create a custom sequence setting that would constrain the canvas size to show only the video portion and would effectively crop out the letterbox that the camera applied to it without the quality loss. You will need to experiment with different heights until you find the right number of pixels. Then you could Export Using Compressor and perform an Advanced Format Conversion to DV NTSC Anamorphic and import the converted file it into a DV NTSC Anamorphic sequence and try printing it to Beta. Keep in mind that you will be losing data by cropping it and that will affect the overall image quality of your final product.
The ideal situation would have been to shoot it in true anamorphic with Panasonic's lens adaptor to get a true anamorphic 16:9. You would then be able to print to video without losing resolution and would have the option to send it off to be up-resd to HD which would translate better in the long run if you hope to screen theatrically in 35mm and future proof the project for HD distribution. An example of a project that used this workflow is the film Room ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417096/ ). It was shot on a DVX-100 with the anamorphic adaptor and up-resd to HD and then printed and screened in 35mm. Goes to show the potential that a small investment in an adaptor could turn into. Or you can just shoot 1080p.

  • 16x9 Quicktime Movie

    Hi All,
I am trying to export a qt movie of a project I filmed and edited in 16x9. The video was captured correctly and the sequence settings are correct...all 48 khz anamorphic. The DVD I burned is fine too. I used QT Conversion MPEG 2 for the video and AC3 my audio in Compressor.
But now I am trying to export this movie as qt 16x9. My probelm is that in the Quicktime Player it plays as 4x3 looking distorted. I've tried exporting in FCP as File Export as QT Movie and also tried File Export using QT Conversion, then went into the QT Mvie options under the settings, putting it to DV NTSC 16x9 and 720x480 for the size. The preview still window displays the image correctly as 16x9.
On a side note, whenever I capture 16x9 tape everything is right, the viewer, canvas, my external monitor...everything except the capture window, which displays as 4x3.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi All,
I think I have found a solution to iDVD not burning a 16x9 video properly. From my previous experiences and research, it is my understanding that quicktime doesn't recoginize the 16x9 anamorphic flag. Having said that, someone on either Ken's site or on the Apple Discussion Boards responded to one of my e-mails telling me to export my sequence using QT conversion, selecting QT Movie with options (not to be confused with exporting as a self contained QT Movie) then resizing the video to a widescreen aspect ratio of say 853x480. Keep quality set to high, DVNTSC, 29.97 frames, audio at 48khz. I did a trial and error, first exporting a test movie this way and then importing it into iDVD. I selected a widescreen theme and dragged and dropped my video into the iDVD pane. My DVD actaully burned correctly in 16x9 format!
I am now in the process of exporting a 1hr 12 min wedding with chapters the same way. I will have to take an extra step of reimporting the video into FCP and then manuaaly finding chapter markers b/c I will only have a straight timeline line once I import the QT movie into FCP. I haven't tried this second step with chapter markers yet, but it is my guess that iDVD will read this QT Movie the same (853x480) but with chapter markers. In the past, the aspect ratio was 720x480 and iDVD would squeeze the video...not so with the 853x480 sequence. I wonder if exporting the size to say 1920x1080 would make any difference in quality? But no matter, the 853x480 video looked fine on my test.
The reason I am experimenting with iDVD again is b/c a client of mine requested the wedding theme with the blowing curtain for her theme. Her video is 1 hr 12 min long. I have burned DVDs in the past that were over 1 hr in length (maybe 1hr 20 min) and they actually looked pretty decent to me.
Worse comes to worse for a longer project, you can just burn a two disc set (or use a double layer disc I guess) use the blowing curtain for the main menu and the scene selection themes for submenus.
I have tried using Amorphisizer as mentioned on Ken's site and Apple's but never was able to get it to work. I think resizing the video to 853x480 solves the iDVD/widescreen problem!!!
I think I may have spoken to soon. My QT movie sized at 853x480 plays correctly in the QT Player, but when reimported back into FCP the video is squished to a smaller sized rectangular shape. What I'm trying to do is export the QT movie with chapters to play and burn correctly into iDVD. It will work with the 853x480 video I exported without chapters, but the question is how to get that video with chapters to work correctly. If only iDVD let you place chapter markers like DVDSP does.

  • Question On 16x9 Aspect Ratio

I set Easy Setup to DV-NTSC Anamorphic and captured my 10 hours of underwater video from Mini-DV that was shot in 16x9 (not HD).
I then created my video, including stills, title text etc.
When I watch my project, my titles and still pictures take up my entire 16x9 widescreen monitor as well as my widescreen TV. The video, however, does not take up the full widescreen. There are black horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
What am I doing wrong? How can I make it so that the video also takes up the entire widescreen display, like the stills and the titles do?
    Thanks for any suggestions... Brad

    Thanks for the reply.
The camcorder is a Sony DCR-HC30. I checked the manual and it says "You can record a 16:9 wide picture on the tape to watch on a 16:9 wide-screen TV. With this function ON, your camcorder offers even wider angles when you move the power zoom lever to the W side than recording in OFF". So I believe it is recording in real 16:9 anamorphic.
I checked the item properties of a video clip (not in the my final sequence) and it says:
    Frame Size is 720x480
    Pixel Aspect is NTSC-CC12 601
    Anamorphic is checked
    Composite is Normal
I checked the sequence properties and it says:
    Frame Size is 720x480
    Pixel Aspect is NTSC-CC12 601
    Anamorphic is NOT checked
    Composite is Blank
When I watch the sequence on the Canvas this is what happens:
Video appears 16:9 with black bars above and below
Photos appear 4:3 and full screen
When I watch a video clip (outside of the sequence), video appears 16:9 with gray bars above and below.
When I export to iDVD for burning to DVD, I did the following:
File / Export / Quicktime Movie
Markers set to None / I tried both self contained movie checked and unchecked
I told iDVD to make a 16:9 project.
When I play the DVD on my widescreen Toshiba LCD TV the following happens:
Video appears 16:9, looks great but has black bars above and below.
Photos look great and take up the entire 16:9 screen.
Any thoughts? I really appreciate your help!

  • How to crop 16x9 to 4x3  ?

I have some footage which is 16x9. I need to crop to 4x3. Please tell me how. Thank You.
    ALen E. Reed

as david showed... there are many other solutions... here are two ideas…
with the little info you gave (what fcp u r working in, dv/hd/other, etc) here are some thoughts:
in the canvas window, (turn on/click) image + wireframe and show tile safe (so you can see results in canvas window).
In the Viewer window go to the Motion tab.
1 (under basic motion) you can scale down the footage to keep the full frame in play (it will letter box the footage)
    or
2 In the Viewer window go to the Motion tab.
(under crop) you can crop the left and right of the image.

  • Canvas & Viewer  displaying different Aspect Ratios

Same footage. Original footage in viewer displaying in Letter Box in a 4:3 black area (and appearing much larger). Same footage from Timeline showing in Canvas as 16x9 black area (but not filling the entire canvas). Both are at 100%. I have tried to arrange back to defaults..no avail...Just for clarity..the viewer and the canvas are displaying/formatted for different aspect ratios. They should be the same. how do I fix it?

The viewer will show the footage in the format it was shot in. The canvas will reflect the footage as it will show up in the timeline based on the settings of the sequence.
My guess is that the sequence settings are set to anamorphic or some sort of 16:9 while what you actually shot is letterboxed.
Did you shoot squeeze or letterbox?

  • Problems with 16x9 HD Footage

I'm having a problem with my footage having a black bar on the top and bottom. I have tried different settings for outputting and nothing seems to work. I'm shooting on the panasonic 200a in 720p, 16x9. The sequence settings are DVProd 720, 30fps when I log and transfer. When editing and outputting, there is a black bar. I've tried anamorphic settings, but that seems to put my black bar within the 16x9 and even smaller. What am I doing wrong?

Yes, the black bars or letterboxing are on the viewer and the canvas. I even have the settings set to fit to screen and that doesn't help, even though the default is a 4/3 screen, I can expand it to 16x9 size but it is still letterboxed.
the Item properties for the sequence are vid rate: 29.97, Frame Size 720x480, Compressor MEG-4 Video, Pixel Aspect NTSC CCIR 601
The source of my video is from a panasonic 220a shooting in DVPro720p, letterboxed. I use the log and transfer in FCP to get the footage across.

  • I have a 4x3 clip that is being stretched into a 16x9 clip by Final Cut --

    Hi --
I have a project I am editing that requires combining footage shot in HD 16x9 and SD 4x3. The settings I have on Final Cut are set for HD 16x9 footage, and I simply blow up the SD footage to fit the window, with pillar boxes on the sides. This has worked fine with every clip except for one.
This particular video clip that a friend of mine shot on her laptop webcam in 4x3 format is for some reason now being stretched into a 16x9 aspect ratio when imported into Final Cut. She did it on her computer (a PC) in Windows Media Format and I converted it to a QuickTime clip without any problem. The converted quicktime clip opens in QT at its proper 4x3 ratio (960x720) but when I import that QT clip into Final Cut and then put it into the canvas it stretches it into a 16x9 aspect ratio. I cannot get it to stop doing this and I don't know why.
    Any suggestions?

The converted quicktime clip opens in QT at its proper 4x3 ratio (960x720)
That's not the pixel aspect ratio for 4:3 which is 720 x 480.
Your clip is being interpreted as Anamorphic. 960 x720 non square pixels = 1280 x 720 square pixels.
    So FCP scales it accordingly.
Click the clip in the Browser. Press command and 9. Locate Anamorphic in the list and click on the check mark to remove it. Rescale under the Motion tab to fit your frame.

  • 16x9 footage is 4x3 in camvas window.  Sequence set to animorphic????

    Hello all.
I have searched the threads and can't find the specific answer to fix my issue.
Sequence set to animorphic. Footage shot in squeeze mode on DVX 100A. Digitized via Sony 900 calm shell as animorphic in FCP.
    Problem:
When opening 16x9 footage file from bin, opens in canvas window as 4x3 (not 4x3 in 16x9 canvas window - viewer window remains in 16x9). When dropped into sequence, must change aspect ratio back to 0. Clip will not retain aspect setting and reverts back to 4x3 if taken off of timeline. Have to repete process each time. Clips do not need to be rendered.
    Any help appreciated.
    enzo
    Dual Core 2.3 G5 PCIe   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

so when you double click the clip in the browser they open into the viewer window which shows them in their correct aspect (16:9)
but when edited into a sequence it distorts to 4:3 (and the canvas window is 4:3 not 16:9)
this suggests that the sequence settings are actually not set as 16:9 anamorphic
can you recheck them... with the problem sequence open and active, press Cmd-Zero or choose Sequence menu > Settings...
in the settings window check to see if the Anamorphic (16:9) checkbox is checked
if it is please post the exact details of all settings in that sequnece window plus all the format details of one of th eproblem clips (select one in the browser and press Cmd-9)

  • Final cut express-changing 16X9 to 4X3

Can't figure out how to change the aspect ratio in my canvas.  Large black bars appear on top and bottom of frame.  Any thoughts?

    NO
Then You've not been careful enough.
Browser Window ! (window with the Sequens/Bins/Captured material etc)
And You see that there are a number of Columns ?
Keep on going to the right - And there it is.
It's the same in FinalCut Express !
I got FinalCut Express from 1 to 4.0.1 and FinalCut Pro to v. 6 - and on the later ones as from FCE 3 and FCP 3 or 4 there is this column.
Must be set to get 16x9 or un-selected to get back to 4x3.

  • 16x9 dvd?

how do i make a 16x9 dvd, do i have to use a preset in compressor, when i make the dvd everything looks fine in after effects, and final cut, when i go to dvd studio pro for authoring i choose 16x9. I would buld and formate this dvd. On playback to the monitor from the dvd player the images are squished...what am i doing rong????

    Chris:
DVX100 letterboxed is 4:3 standard video just with black bars. If you edit in a 4:3 timeline you must encode it as 4:3 standard video NOT as 16:9 anamorphic.
If you want to create a 16:9 anamorphic video using as source a 4:3 source (letterboxed or not letterboxed) you must: upscale your clips @134% to fill the anamorphic 16:9 canvas (you'll loose some quality) and/or use some creative editing to keep your footage in the original scale, as you can see in this link:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/fakingit.html
I have the same camera and make corporative/trade shows video and use both tricks to fill 16:9 plasma screens.
    Hope that helps !

  • 4x3 DVDSP Menus from 16x9 anamorphic video

Title: 4x3 DVDSP Menus from 16x9 anamorphic video
Goal: Create 4x3 scaled videos from 16x9 anamorphic asset
    Asset: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV ( 720 x 480 ) from Sony DCR SR-300
    Solution:
    Create a sequence; cmd-0 to see settings;
Turn on Pixel Aspect Ratio anamorphic 16:9 ( this makes the Canvas look like wide screen )
Select custom frame size; Set WidthxHeight 480x480 ( Canvas now looks 4:3)
    Because:
Pixels are 16:9 so while 640x480 is in 4:3 ratio, the pixels are wide so the frame is wide
Meaningfully mnemonically: 480 is three-quarters of 16 so reducing the frame width to 480 gives you fewer pixels wide but the wider pixels push the outside dimensions of the canvas to the 4:3 you need for the DVDSP menu display.
    Caveat:
When loading a clip into the sequence, say No to setting the Seq Settings to the Clip settings.
You've customized the sequence and you don't want the clip to change you sequence customization.
    Verification:
I saved this as a QT Ref Movie; loaded it to a DVDSP 4:3 Menu and it looked the way I expected.

  • 16x9 settings

I am able to do the workflow from live type to FCP with no problem. I do have a problem placing the text where I want in the frame. I got these settings off the Apple website for 16:9 ... Project properties... NTSC DV 3:2 pixel aspect 1.19 When I enter these numbers in the frame goes to 16x9 with TV safe. I enter my text and move it to where I want. I want it to be in the bottom left but for some reason it stays in the middle when used in FCP. Is there some setting I have ignored?
    Brian

I see settings in the display mode for 4:3, 16x9 pan and scan, 16x9 letterbox, and 16x9 pan and scan & letterbox. Which one do I select? I'm guessing 16x9 pan and scan and letterbox, b/c my guess is it would letterbox on a standard 4x3 tv and show full screen on a widescreen tv, correct?
That is what 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox does, but did you compose your shots accordingly? What I mean is, on a 4:3 TV the dvd player will chop off the left and right sides of the image, so nothing important will be lost right?
Also, the image display is dependent on the DVD player settings for TV shape: if it's set to 4:3 Letterbox, then the image will actually display letterboxed. If the player is set to 4:3 Pan-Scan (sometimes labeled as 4:3 Normal), only then the edges be cropped.
For what it's worth, the most commonly used Display Mode setting is 16:9 Letterbox because most folks don't shoot with Pan-Scan in mind.
How do I make the viewer and canvas diplay a 16x9 native image?
Confirm that both your footage (displayed in the Viewer) and your currently active sequence (displayed in the Canvas) is tagged as Anamorphic. It sounds like your sequence is not properly tagged.
Lastly, in compressor, where I comressed my footage to m2v, the window shows a standard 4x3 image. Can I change this?
No way to change that, this is a Quicktime-related issue. But don't worry, your image is correct, Compressor just doesn't display it correctly when previewing.

This question has been asked already several times here: http://onesearch.sun.com/search/onesearch/index.jsp?qt=resizing+image&subCat=siteforumid%3Ajava76&site=dev&dftab=siteforumid%3Ajava76&chooseCat=javaall&col=developer-forums
There is no method in MIDP which rescales a picture for you, so you have to write it on your on (or use existing code). But usually this would be pretty slow. Mostly it is better to offer different versions of your application for different devices (screen resolutions) where the images have already the appropriate size within your jar-file.

Would anyone tell me why ? Is the reason java.awt.canvas ?
    Thanks in advance ^ ^

If you'd bother to read the documentation of the methods you're using, you'd know:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/awt/Toolkit.html#getImage(java.lang.String)
Returns an image which gets pixel data from the specified file, whose format can be either GIF, JPEG or PNG.
