16x9 settings

I am able to do the workflow from live type to FCP with no problem. I do have a problem placing the text where I want in the frame. I got these settings off the Apple website for 16:9 ... Project properties... NTSC DV 3:2 pixel aspect 1.19 When I enter these numbers in the frame goes to 16x9 with TV safe. I enter my text and move it to where I want. I want it to be in the bottom left but for some reason it stays in the middle when used in FCP. Is there some setting I have ignored?
Brian

I see settings in the display mode for 4:3, 16x9 pan and scan, 16x9 letterbox, and 16x9 pan and scan & letterbox. Which one do I select? I'm guessing 16x9 pan and scan and letterbox, b/c my guess is it would letterbox on a standard 4x3 tv and show full screen on a widescreen tv, correct?
That is what 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox does, but did you compose your shots accordingly? What I mean is, on a 4:3 TV the dvd player will chop off the left and right sides of the image, so nothing important will be lost right?
Also, the image display is dependent on the DVD player settings for TV shape: if it's set to 4:3 Letterbox, then the image will actually display letterboxed. If the player is set to 4:3 Pan-Scan (sometimes labeled as 4:3 Normal), only then the edges be cropped.
For what it's worth, the most commonly used Display Mode setting is 16:9 Letterbox because most folks don't shoot with Pan-Scan in mind.
How do I make the viewer and canvas diplay a 16x9 native image?
Confirm that both your footage (displayed in the Viewer) and your currently active sequence (displayed in the Canvas) is tagged as Anamorphic. It sounds like your sequence is not properly tagged.
Lastly, in compressor, where I comressed my footage to m2v, the window shows a standard 4x3 image. Can I change this?
No way to change that, this is a Quicktime-related issue. But don't worry, your image is correct, Compressor just doesn't display it correctly when previewing.

  • Quicktime 16x9 settings

I'm running FCP S2 and all the latest software updates,
I usually export out with compressor a quicktime movie for client reveiw at 300KBPS and a 320 x 240 frame size and then ajust the frame in QT Pro to 320 x 180 so that it looks like 16x9.
when i tried this today, the frame stays the same in QT and it chops the bottom off the video instead of changing to a 16x9 aspect.
I don't understand why this is not working anymore?

Once you're selected Export in QT Pro, there is an button for Options, which brings up the Movie Settings dialog. In that dialog, there is a button for Size (found under Video) where you can input new dimensions as well as select to crop, scale or letterbox to maintain aspect ratio.

  • What is the best workflow procedure for importing DV SP 16x9 footage into FCP7 and then exporting the best quality 16x9 to standard DVD so that it looks great (or at least good) on a 50" Samsung LCD TV ?????? Please help! anybody?? Thanks!

We are using a Sony HDV-Z7U camera for acquisition. We recently recorded an event using the camera's non HD capabilities. We set the camera to record "DV SP" 16x9 settings on both Mini-DV tape and CF card.
To import the DV SP footage into FCP7 we chose the "DV NTSC anamorphic" setting in the log and transfer settings window. After a successful transfer from the CF card (the CF card held approximately 83 minutes) we checked the size of the file and found it to be 16 Gigs! Why so big? An 83 miniDV tape shot in SD should easily fit on a standard 4.7 gig MPEG2 DVD.
We need to burn DVDs of this show - we sent it to compressor and got horrible quality.
What is the best setting to use in FCP7's log and transfer settings window to import DV SP 16x9 standard def. footage and what is the best method for exporting for outputting this footage to DVD that preserves the original quality of the DV SP footage?? Anyone? Many thanks

    > Why so big? An 83 miniDV tape shot in SD should easily fit on a standard 4.7 gig MPEG2 DVD.
No it doesn't. DV is 13GB per hour.
In any case, a Video DVD uses the MPEG 2 codec, not DV.
    >What is the best setting to use in FCP7's log and transfer settings window to import DV SP 16x9 standard def.
    DV NTSC anamorphic.
    >what is the best method for exporting for outputting this footage to DVD...
Use the Compressor DVD preset "Best Quality 90 mins".
    >...that preserves the original quality of the DV SP footage?
Not going to happen, you are compressing by a factor of 1:4. Shooting as HDV would have given you better quality material to start with. DV is at the bottom end of the scale.

  • 16x9 SD capture creates giant file

    Hi all:
I'm not new to this but made recent changes that have SD video files clogging my external drive. I'm running FCE 2.0.3, capturing to a 500GB LaCie (with 403GB available) and shooting with a Sony PDR-170 that I just switched to 16x9 after years of 4x3. I use Capture Now and have tried both 4x3 and anamorphic 16x9 settings and have trashed my preferences and started over. Since I last captured in 4x3 I've upgraded the OS.
If I stop capture at two minutes I end up with a QT file around 200MB that plays fine. If I let capture run, at about 10 minutes everything freezes and I have a 400GB file "(filename)-av" filling the LaCie. The file shows a QT thumb, but trying to open it gets the error "This is not a movie file."
So what am I missing (other than the likely choice of operator error)? Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. Replacing the iMac and moving to FCE4 are in the budget for 1Q 2010, but that doesn't help me now.

Then I suspect there's a basic incompatibility between FCE2 and your OS/QT. I know there are issues, but I forget at which points in the FCE/OS upgrade paths they appear. (There are others in this forum who should be able to give you specifics.)
You will likely need to go back to your previous versions of OS/QT.

  • DVDSP Settings 16x9 Project

I have just shot my first project in 16x9 with a Sony ZU1. I am shooting standard def, 16x9. Can someone tell me what settings I should use in DVDSP? I see 16x9 pan and scan, 16x9 letterbox, and 16x9 pan and scan and letterbox.
Are there any other settings I need to be aware of?
I basically want people who have a high def tv to see the image full screen and people who have standard def to see the screen as letterbox.
    Thanks,
    Scott

I am still confused. I want those with a widescreen tv to see the DVD in full screen and standard def viewers to watch it letterbox. If I set my settings to letterbox, then what would a person watching a widescreen tv see?
I did a test burn using 16x9 pan and scan and letterbox. On my standard def tv it displayed letterbox and on my portable DVD player which is widescreen, it displayed correctly filling the entire screen. Wouldn't the combination of these settings be correct?
I don't have a native widescreen or high def tv yet, but plan on buying one soon. I have an 23 inch HD Apple Cinema Display and use a production monitor which has both 4x3 and 16x9 modes. The 16x9 mode is letterboxed.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • FCP sequence settings when shooting 24p, 2:3:3:2 at 16x9?

I'm attempting to edit my first feature project on FCP after having shot footage on a canon xl2 at 24p, 2:3:3:2 and using the 16:9 frame size.
Can't find specifics about the proper FCP settings anywhere in the manual for editing footage shot this way. So I'm wondering-- since the captured footage shows up in the browser as 720x480, should the sequence setting be dialed in the same? Also should I be editing in the timeline with sequence settings at NTSC DV (3:2)and the anamorphic 16:9 box checked?
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
I've got my notions on all this but am a little nervous about going forward without some reassurance. Appreciate any help you can offer on these questions.

You're best off creating a new, custom Easy Setup to meet your needs...
Press Option-Command-Q to launch the Audio/Video Settings dialog
Select the Sequence Presets tab, then...
    Click DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 and press Duplicate
In the Sequence Preset Editor, check the Anamorphic 16:9 box
Rename this Sequence Preset to DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 Anamorphic and click OK
Back in the Sequence Settings tab, place a checkmark next to your newly created sequence preset to select it as your current preset
Select the Capture Presets tab, and repeat the previous sub-steps for DV-NTSC 48 kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal
(that is, duplicate, adjust for Anamorphic, rename, then select as your preset)
Select the Summary tab and confirm that you've got the correct presets for all selections - outside of what you've adjusted already, Device Control as well as Video Playback should be set to FireWire NTSC - then click the Create Easy Setup button
Enter a name and description, then click OK
After you've saved your preset, click OK to exit Audio/Video Settings
You've now got your system up and running correctly so that you can digitize and edit.
If, for any reason, you screw up your settings, you've now got an Easy Setup that you can simply access at anytime, simple press Control-Q and select it from the options. Or if you're a menubar person, that's Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup.
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
Personally, I leave mine at 100% - never had a problem with it. However, many here advise dialing it down to 70% or so (if I can remember correctly - hopefully someone else will chime in if I'm wrong).
The default thumbnail value is fine as well, in my experience.

  • Need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD

    Hello
Can anyone tell me the settings I need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD. I am mixing other 4:3 letterbox content. Evertime I make an mpeg with Quicktime conversion it is squeezed. I want it to be letterbox in 4:3
    Thanks in advance.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5 and DVD pro 3
    Regards,
    Dana Gonzales

In addition to using the advice above, make sure in Compressor (or other item you use to encode) that you are using the 16:9 encode ratio. If you are using QT conversion (which it sounds like from Final Cut?) also make sure that ratio is checked. Unlike a 4:3 m2v which will be 720 x 480 when you open it in QT, the 16:9 will be 720 x 404

  • How to display a photo slideshow in Widescreen 16x9 format?

I just bought a 5g iPod and the A/V connection kit. I can play a photo slideshow on my 16x9 TV, but it stretches the photos to fit the screen, so they are out of proper aspect ratio. Is there a way to tell my iPod that it should be displaying the photos on a 16x9 screen?
I understand that there is a widescreen option in the Video playback menu, but this does not seem to have any effect on the output of photo slideshows.

    Jon,
See if this works. It may or may not.
    Go to videos-->video settings-->Widescreen-->On
See if now when you play the photo slideshow it works right.
Now, if it doesn't then I don't think there is much you can do.
Tell Apple about the issue (if the steps above don't solve it)

  • 16x9 Quicktime Movie

    Hi All,
I am trying to export a qt movie of a project I filmed and edited in 16x9. The video was captured correctly and the sequence settings are correct...all 48 khz anamorphic. The DVD I burned is fine too. I used QT Conversion MPEG 2 for the video and AC3 my audio in Compressor.
But now I am trying to export this movie as qt 16x9. My probelm is that in the Quicktime Player it plays as 4x3 looking distorted. I've tried exporting in FCP as File Export as QT Movie and also tried File Export using QT Conversion, then went into the QT Mvie options under the settings, putting it to DV NTSC 16x9 and 720x480 for the size. The preview still window displays the image correctly as 16x9.
On a side note, whenever I capture 16x9 tape everything is right, the viewer, canvas, my external monitor...everything except the capture window, which displays as 4x3.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi All,
I think I have found a solution to iDVD not burning a 16x9 video properly. From my previous experiences and research, it is my understanding that quicktime doesn't recoginize the 16x9 anamorphic flag. Having said that, someone on either Ken's site or on the Apple Discussion Boards responded to one of my e-mails telling me to export my sequence using QT conversion, selecting QT Movie with options (not to be confused with exporting as a self contained QT Movie) then resizing the video to a widescreen aspect ratio of say 853x480. Keep quality set to high, DVNTSC, 29.97 frames, audio at 48khz. I did a trial and error, first exporting a test movie this way and then importing it into iDVD. I selected a widescreen theme and dragged and dropped my video into the iDVD pane. My DVD actaully burned correctly in 16x9 format!
I am now in the process of exporting a 1hr 12 min wedding with chapters the same way. I will have to take an extra step of reimporting the video into FCP and then manuaaly finding chapter markers b/c I will only have a straight timeline line once I import the QT movie into FCP. I haven't tried this second step with chapter markers yet, but it is my guess that iDVD will read this QT Movie the same (853x480) but with chapter markers. In the past, the aspect ratio was 720x480 and iDVD would squeeze the video...not so with the 853x480 sequence. I wonder if exporting the size to say 1920x1080 would make any difference in quality? But no matter, the 853x480 video looked fine on my test.
The reason I am experimenting with iDVD again is b/c a client of mine requested the wedding theme with the blowing curtain for her theme. Her video is 1 hr 12 min long. I have burned DVDs in the past that were over 1 hr in length (maybe 1hr 20 min) and they actually looked pretty decent to me.
Worse comes to worse for a longer project, you can just burn a two disc set (or use a double layer disc I guess) use the blowing curtain for the main menu and the scene selection themes for submenus.
I have tried using Amorphisizer as mentioned on Ken's site and Apple's but never was able to get it to work. I think resizing the video to 853x480 solves the iDVD/widescreen problem!!!
I think I may have spoken to soon. My QT movie sized at 853x480 plays correctly in the QT Player, but when reimported back into FCP the video is squished to a smaller sized rectangular shape. What I'm trying to do is export the QT movie with chapters to play and burn correctly into iDVD. It will work with the 853x480 video I exported without chapters, but the question is how to get that video with chapters to work correctly. If only iDVD let you place chapter markers like DVDSP does.

  • Can i capture from an analog 16x9 source

Can i capture from an analog 16x9 HD source (SAT-TV) using analog (S-Video) output using a Canopus ADVC-100 into FCP 4.x and preserve the anamorphic aspect ratio? If so, how do I go about doing this (meaning, if this will even work - I'm fairly certain that the SAT box will output the 16x9 flag on s-video - what settings do i use in FCP to capture that aspect?
    Thanx in advance.

actually i am allowed to record from TV... i'm using the analog to do this. HRA allows me to do this - There are plenty of units out there that have tivo and a dvd burner that are legal) - all I'm doing is using my mac. Remember the VCR? this is no different as I am not going digital to digital or bypassing any DRM. Not to mention, I'm taping some docs that aren't even avaialble to purchase. ;(
Also, its just for my personal use. Just to have an archive of the show.
I'm using sledgehammer erquipment to just archive a show.. hehe

  • Sequence Settings - seem to be same - but video looks different

    Hello all.
I have a project that I have 6 or 7 sequences that I have edited, output as self-contained quicktimes, and then sent them on to Compressor to turn into mp4's. Everything's great.
EXCEPT for one, single sequence.  I have no explanation for it, but this one sequence -- when I look at it in Finder the thumbnail appears to be in the correct 16x9 format.  But when I drag it into QT 7, it formats almost completely square!  And then when I test it in MP Streamclip - completely square.  But then when I play it with QT10 - it seems to maintain it's format.
I think I remember that QT 7 and QT10 play pixel aspects differently?  But I can't seem to figure out why one sequence outputs and plays differently from another sequence?  They all have the same settings?
    Settings are:
    Frame Size:          1280x1080
    Aspect Ratio:          HD 1280x1080
    Pixel Aspect Ration:  HD 1280x1080
    Anamporphic NOT checked
    Compressor DVCPRO HD 1080p30
    Thanks for sharing your ideas...
    db

It's always best to convert nonsquare pixel video to square pixel dimensions for use on computers.  1920x180 is the correct format for 1080 with square pixels.  You can try and adjust the display pixel dimensions in quicktime player but I wouldn't count on it.

  • Sequence settings for Sony HandyCam video

I'm working with video shot on a Sony Handycam HDR-CX550.  I had no problem importing it into iMovie and then to FCP, however I can't figure out what sequence settings I should use.  It appears to be 16x9, but shows up as 4x3 in my FCP bin.  Also, the sequence settings I've tried all require rendering every time I make an edit, which obviously becomes a huge pain.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

My understanding is that IMovie works with DV streams (files with a .dv extension).  You need to convert these to DV quicktimes (with a .mov extensions).  Use Compressor (which comes with fcp) to do this.  There is an apple preset for this format.

  • Movie won't play in 16x9

I'm using iDVD to produce a DVD. When I add the movie which is a 16x9 Quick Time Movie file, it always comes up as 4x3. Any suggestions, please

Here are some things you can try.
Quit iDVD and delete your iDVD preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.idvd.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iDVD; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
If that doesn't help, try doing a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
Try opening a new file and importing a different file just to rule out a problem with the video itself.
Read this article to see if there is anything that helps.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6732.html
If the problem persists, you might want to do a reinstall of the iDVD program.
I hope one of these works.

  • 16x9 on a TV

Anybody got the Intel Mac Mini to do a 16x9 PAL image.
I am connection via s-video to a 16x9 TV but can only get a 4x3 image. According to the producer of Switchresx he has the same problem and thinks it's a limtation in the video card in the Mac. Way to go Apple!!!

    Somebody needs to fix this!
I tinkered with SwitchResX, but the there is no useful documentation and I could not create any custom modes that worked with a TV.
I have now wasted a day trawling through message boards and searching websites for any magic settings that will fix this problem.
What I did find very useful was installing VNC on the mac as this will run under any resolution so you can log into the mac remotely and change the settings back if you break the mac monitor display settings.
I will settle for a way to rescale (reverse anamorphic style) quicktimes that playback through frontrow.
If the hardware REALLY can't cope then some software should be able to rescale video to a different aspect ratio.
