17" 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo iMac not making start up chime

Hey. I couldn't find an appropriate thread for this in the software issues board (since it seemed more like a software problem), so I came here. Anyway, my iMac no longer makes the startup chime. This isn't really a problem, but I do miss the startup chime. Thanks.

It might be that the initial system volume level is low or off.. that has happened to my Mac once or twice... lets hope it is.

Startup chimes (or lack thereof) in conjunction with other symptoms may be a precursor to some issues. Just so you can look over it.

I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents".  Why cant i access the files from my old mac?  I tried the time machine and that isnt working either.  I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such.  I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another.  Please help.

Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
    $ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
    uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
    $ ls -ld Music
    drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here  staff  272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
    $ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes.

  • I have a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. Can I use mirroring via Apple TV? If so. how.

I'm having no trouble sending stuff from my iPod Touch to my TV via Apple TV, but can't seem to get my
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac to do so, as the mirror icon is not appearing in the Menu bar on top.
    1. Can my processor mirror?
    2. If so, how do I get the iCon to appear in the Menu bar

Looking at your processor, you haven't got a compatible Mac. AirPlay Mirroring requires a Mid 2011 or newer iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
To mirror the Mac's display to the Apple TV, use an application like AirParrot or Beamer > http://www.airparrot.com
If you want to use AirPlay to send music or videos to the Apple TV, open iTunes and you should see the AirPlay icon on the iTunes toolbar

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

  • Old Airport Express (802.11g) and Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (802.11n)

    Hi guys!
I used to have an iMac G5 with *Built-in 54 Mbps AirPort Extreme (802.11g)*
Then I bought an *Airport Express* and I am sure that by the time it was still an *Airport Express with (802.11g)*
Now that I have a brand new new iMac that is *Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (802.11n)*
Will I have problem trying to connect it to the Express because it is n and not g?
    Thanks!

No. The Airport Extreme card in your iMac automatically negotiates 802.11b/g/n. It will work just fine with the Airport Express.

  • Core Duo mac mini vs. Core 2 Duo iMac

I am interested in getting a new mac. I would like some advice from others about some of the new models. I do a lot of iPhoto with my Nikon D50 and iMovie and iDVD. I am assuming that a new Core Duo mac mini will be a significant upgrade from my current G4 mini, but I am wondering how much more performace I will see by getting a Core 2 Duo iMac. I am just not sure if I will notice the increased L2 cache or the better video card. again, there is nothing professional, but would like good performance. I am currently using a 19" Dell monitor that I am happy to keep, but will unload it if I get the Imac - not a problem.

The Core Duo Mac Mini lacks the graphics processor, and the RAM upgradeability of the iMac. Also it lacks the Firewire 800 you can get on the 24" model, and the larger hard drive capacity you can get on the iMac build to order. The Mac Mini internally can only get up to 200 GB internally, and with build to order, 500 GB can be put in the 17" and 20" iMac, and 750 GB in the 24" iMac. You'll find hard drive capacity a must in movie production, and the speed of the hard drive will be better. I'd even partition that hard drive to keep space for temporary files on movie projects. No need to get rid of your Dell display when getting the iMac as the iMac supports dual-display with a stretched desktop across both displays! Apple claims a 39% increase in speed for the MacBook Pro Core2Duo which was just released over a similarly configured MacBook Pro CoreDuo. Since iMovie and iDVD will be able to take advantage of the processor, I'd go for the Core2Duo in a heartbeat.

  • 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac freezing when trying to update and non responsive

I have a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac.  The updates download but when the mac tries to restart to complete the process the screen is just grey with a tool bar across the top System Updates, however the imac is completely unresponsive and will not even force quit.  I have even left it overnight on a couple of occasions in case it is due to the size if the update but to no success and have to turn the machine off manually.  It operates and functions during use but freezes when shutting down.
Any one have any experience of this or suggestions please?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Anyone tried LPX on a core 2 duo iMac?  How's performance?

    Hi all,
Thinking of upgrading from LE8, and unsure whether to do so now, or whether to wait until I upgrade my machine (which probably won't be for ages).  Have any of you tried installing on a core 2 duo machine?  Can you comment how the performance is?  For my purposes, a usual project might be 20 tracks or so, of which 3 or 4 will be sampled/MIDI instruments, and with a few effects here and there.
I'm running a 3.06GHz core 2 duo iMac maxed out at 4GB RAM.  The RAM is probably my main concern, given that I'll also have to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (which I don't particularly want to do unless I have to!).
    Thanks for your help,
    Jo

Hi Mate, Sorry! Yes, it runs really well, i'm on a 2.6ghz with 4gb ram and it seemed to run better than Logic 9 on the same machine - But then, this is a clean install of OSX, so may explain that - Being fresh and all.
It was a bit beach ball-y to start with, but i guess it was still loading everything up and refreshing the library etc., since that initial session it's been good without any beach balls going on.
I loaded up 15 tracks with an assortment of different instruments within the Logic suite and all was good.  It's not as snappy as my other machine (i5/8gb) but i think that could be the memory difference - Definetly get yourself an additional 4gb.

  • Front Row on a core 2 duo iMac?

Just had a friend round getting some help setting up WMP on her iMac, and was going to show her FR as she was talking about using the mac to watch movie trailers.
I looked in the Apps folder, but no sign of it, and she didn't recall any remote control, and nothing seemed to want to stick with any magnet on the right hand side suggesting there was no magnet.
Can anyone confirn that a core 2 duo iMac bought last August should have FR or not? I was sure it should have, in which case can anyone shed any light on where we'd find it?

I agree, if she bought it in AUG it isn't a Core 2 Duo it sounds like the 17" Core Duo Apple sold through the Apple Store for Education for a very short time (iMac Mid 2006). It was the stripped (basic) model with a Combo Drive instead of a Super Drive, the basic shared RAM video card and no remote.
I don't know if it had Front Row installed, but John's post shows where FR is located and Steve's informative post gives the key commands to start it if it's there. That's good to know Steve. I always reach for my remote.

  • My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102.

My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102 and it keeps circling through the same error.  Also the screen is so faint (pressing the F1 and F2 keys don't do anything).   I got this from a friend and he didn't have any of the original discs.  Any suggestions?  From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update.  I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.

I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

Run Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities before trying to upgrade to Lion in case the startup disk needs repairing.
