17" iMac intermittant line of dead pixels

Bought a new 4th gen 17" imac on Aug 13. Aug 15, new imac has horizontal line of "dead" pixels 1/3 of the way from top of screen that goes right across. I say "dead", as they are not truly dead pixels, they are just not displaying correctly. This is a problem that only seems to occur when I wake the computer or the monitor from sleep. It will stay like this for a while, and then it will eventually disappear. The only solution I have found so far is restarting the computer (pain in the butt), but this also seems to fix it self every now and again by pulling up the dashboard or by other random actions (I would rather deal with this ANY DAY over dealing with Vista or any other PC for that matter).
Before going through the ordeal of taking my computer back to Future Shop (Canada's Best Buy) and getting them to look at it (I will be without computer for weeks) has anyone ever experienced this, and do you know of a permanent solution?
On a side note, sometimes (but only sometimes) when this occurs, my dock also will not unhide when I mouse over. I know how to fix that issue, but perhaps these issues are related.

I have a similar problem but my line is not intermittant but is here to stay.

My problem has a solution called 600$, the cost of a new LCD panel

  • Line of "dead pixels" on the screen that come and go.

I just did a clean erase and install, i'm using leopard with all the current updates. i noticed the system was leaving lines on the screen before the fresh install so i figured it was a software problem. well, after doing a clean install they are back. its like the video isn't processing correctly or something because i can put another window on top of the "dead pixels" and it covers them up, like the in this picture. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/2442796153fb66961090o.png
the finder window is covering an inch or so over the dead pixels. and to clarify the line of dead pixels or what ever they are appear to associate with a certain window or app and show up at different parts of the screen. for instance, if i see the lines in firefox, i can minimize the window and the line is gone.
this is on a 24inch white imac with the 2.16 c2d.
any ideas what would make this happen?

There are quite a few posts about this sort of thing.
Many peopel find some minutes to hours after the lines of pixels the Mac freezes - mouse still moves but you can't do anything.
It's not clear if it's software or hardware.
My suspicion is that it's a software problem but I may be wrong. Either graphics memory or RAM used for buffering is faulty, or something is inadvertently writing garbage to graphics memory.
Most people attribute the issue to Leopard, but I'm still running Tiger.
Lots of posts about it being an nVidia card driver issue, but I'm running ATI.
Maybe coincidence but my 20" late 2006 iMac started playing up after a security update earlier this year.
Some people have had graphics cards replaced and it's cured it, pointing at hardware.
Another thing that seems to help is upping default fan speed using say smcFanControl.
Two things that have made this less frequent for me are:
    - turning off Genie effect in Sytem Prefeerences for minimising/maximising windows (I often got freezes when changing windows)
    - running smcFanControl
There is some debate as to whether or not for some reason the fans are not speeding up properly (software/EFI or SMC problem?) in response to higher temps and hence components are becoming unstable.
Try some searches on 'glitches' or 'freezing' or browse through the last couple of weeks threads.
If your machine is under warranty I'd be phoning Apple. Mine alas is not.

  • Qosmio G20 - Line of dead pixels

The other night a solid line of dead pixels appeared down the left hand side of my screen. It just appeared out of nowhere, a solid, 1-pixel wide yellow line. Is there anything that can be done for this? Can it be repaired? I believe my computer is still covered by extended warranty

    Hi Ashley
Of course this issue can be repaired but the question is how ;)
In my opinion the faulty part must be replaced.
Try to connect the external monitor to the notebook to find out what part malfunctions.
If the same line will appear on the second display then the GPU (graphic chip) which is fixed on the board malfunctions and in such case the whole board must be replaced.
But dont worry about that! As you said the warranty should be valid and every part replacement should be done for free.
Therefore dont waste the time a contact the ASP in you country as soon as possible.
    Good luck

  • My iMac 27inch 5k screen has a huge line of dead pixels. I bought it today itself!!!

I Just bought my iMac 27inch 5k and after Unboxing it, came to realize that the screen has flickering and dead pixels all over the left side.
is this a hardware or sodrware issue and can I repalce it with a new one since my warrantee is a day old?!

If you bought it directly from Apple,  you have a 14 day return or exchange window. Take advantage of it.

  • Just got imac back, two new dead pixels

I just got my iMac back from a repair (the hard drive crashed) and now there are 2 new dead pixels that weren't there before. I am totally bummed. I know they don't replace the display for a couple of bad pixels, but come on! They repaired one thing and broke another? I don't get it.

My brand new iMac shipped not with a dead pixel but with a spec of dust, underneath the glass... A spec of dust... (or maybe a defect in the glass itself). My iPhone only has tiny dust particles because it stays in my pocket. This was fresh out of the factory. If it was Steve W. building them in Steve J's mom's garage, it wouldn't seem careless. But since this came from a high quality factory, it seems careless. The tech-support guy laughed at me. I said "would it be that hard to lift off the glass, clean it, and put it back on?"
Apparently it's not in the "threshold". Apple's customer support has gone to s* since I first got a G3 iBook.
I'm being pretty picky, but when you have such a large, beautiful display, every defect stands out. At least I only notice it when it's against a solid color lighter than it (usually only white).

  • IMac late 2010 has dead pixels. What are my options?

I bought a 27" iMac Sept. 2010 and in May 2011 I noticed some dead pixels on the bottom left had of my screen. To be honest I'm a little heart broken by this because if I decided to sell it today, I wouldn't get the natural depreciated value because of these dead pixels. I know I wouldn't buy a computer with dead pixels. I do have apple care so I'd like to know what my options are.

AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine..

  • I have now 25 lines of dead pixels on my screen! help me please! i have an 17" iMac4,1

i started with one line across the screen vertically now its 25 lines...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Do these lines move or they are in the same place? If they are in the same place, the screen got damaged. If they move, your graphic card is damaged.
Apple doesn't provide support for this computer. If your graphic card has to be replaced, you have to search a new logic board for your computer model, so it's better to buy a new Mac. If your display has to be replaced, you have to search for a new one, being easier

  • Grey line of dead pixels

My ipod touch 1g has a big row at the top of the screen of grey pixels. It grows bigger over time. My warranty has expired so I wanted to know what I can do to fix the problem. Do I have to pay for a new screen?

i might as well try to fix it myself
If you have repaired such compact electronics equipment. It's not a job for beginners.

  • New iMac with dead pixels

I just got a brand new 21.5 iMac it has 2 dead pixels, is this normal what's the acceptable number of dead pixels?

Here is an Apple KB article pertaining to dead pixels. It does not list a number that is acceptable or not.
But, Apple has a 90 day return policy, unless I believe you have a custom configuration. So I would return it if the dead pixels are in a place where you see them all the time and it bothers you.

  • Muvo TX FM dead pixel l

I purchased a Creative Muvo TX FM MP3 player, in early 2005. It's been a great product and I have been pleased with it up to this point. The warranty has expired and a line of dead pixels have developed on the screen. It is bearable, although annoying. For reference, I am an Australian customer.
I would like to know if this fault can be repaired; and by whom, as I doubt there is anything I could do to fix it. If so, please indicate how this can be done. Thanks.

If you contact Creative they may well be able to fix it, tho' as it's outside warranty you might have to pay.

  • Dead pixels on 2 ipod touches

i've just recieved my second ipod touch after noticing more than 6 dead pixels on the first, well this one looked ok until i saw a line of dead pixels near the edge of the screen, Great, i thought got another one with dead pixels - i dont know whether to register it or not, and put my music on it, or send it back to amazon OR contact apple...
i sent the last one back to amazon but i dont know whether to do that again!
    please help!

I wouldn't send it back to Apple, some people on this forum are saying that they send it back to Apple and sometimes they say "Unable to duplicate the issue" and send the same iPT back to you.
I'd send it back to Amazon, get a refund and go to a store and get one. I went through 5 iPTs from Apple Store, all with stuck-pixels, until I gave up getting from one them and getting a perfect one from Best Buy. Do not keep a mal-functioning unit no matter how many you go through. Hope this helps.

  • Lenovo G550 Dead Pixels

Hi i am starting to get a dead pixels issue there 3 already. I am still under warrenty does the policy mean 3 or more or just more then 3. Also do i have to sent it abroad for repair i use the laptop everyday so sending it will be problematic.
Also i have no recovery partition i have the recovery discs so i can re-instate the onekey recovery.
Not sure if this void the warranty at all.
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

i suggest you to contact lenovo support line for dead pixel pixel issue. ( warranty may cover )
recovery partitions are hidden, so you can't see the partition unless some error occurs.
i didn't understand what your question is, creating recovery dvds or recovering system using disc?
actually, answer is yes for both.

  • 5th gen ipod has dead pixels.

Hi i turned on my ipod today and discovered a horizontal line of dead pixels i ran it through diagnostics mode everything seems fine. i was wondering if there were any fixes i could do to it myself before mailing it in to apple for failing on me. no it isnt covered under warranty

This has been discovered to be a very common issue with the 5th Generation iPods, unfortunately.
There is a very informative thread on the topic here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8177702#8177702
Hopefully that can answer your question.

  • Small hair/dead pixel behind screen 10 weeks old MBP

    Hello,
I have a 10 weeks old MBP and now I was browsing the web when I noticed a very small hair behind my screen
it's aprox 2-3 mm in length but it really annoys me because of 2 facts
It's in the centre of my screen
My MBP is 10 weeks old!
However it also could be a line of dead pixels.
I already read some threads about this and most of them say that I have to go to the Apple store,
but I live in Belgium? I don't know if the service is the same as in the US?
    thanks!

    Hello Michiel0lb,
No, I'm sorry but I can't be that positive.  I don't use MBP, I have never seen their guarantee and the interpretation of a fault has to be with the examiner ... in your case, Switch.    That said, if the fault is visible any decent company would want to see you satisfied whether it means cleaning, replacing the screen or the whole MB for that matter.   10 weeks is not a long time and Apple is a decent company.
I can (just) make the fault out though I'm sure it is more visible in reality.   Be sure to approach Switch in person and phone first to confirm they are able to handle a warranty matter.   Re-sellers often have facilities to repair on the premises or they will send the machine back to an Apple base if the matter is serious.    But if asked when you phone, don't say any more than your screen has developed unusual marks that could be faulty pixels.    For your own satisfaction you must ensure it is examined.
Post back with your findings ... and good luck,
