17" imac looks and game performance

Hi All,
Im thinking about getting a intel iMac for home, but Im not sure I can stretch to the 20" I remember thinking the 20" g5 imac was much better looking than the 17" because the area bellow the screen seemed more in proportion. Does the 17" intel look good in person?
Also, I want to use bootcamp to install windows on it for the odd game, but if I get the 17", I will only get the 128mb graphics card. How are you finding games on the 128mb? I want to play half life 2 episode 1, and batlefield 2, and would like them to play with the settings on medium if possible.

i forgot to mention that with Q4 you have to tell it that you have the core duo.i assume other games will be the same. even after asking for optimum settings i had to tell it i had the core duo.
then reboot. theres is a noticable difference. have gotten better settings but im upgrading thursday to 1 gig ram (getting another 512 chip) also going with a 250 gig external firewire hard drive( LaCie) thats what my local dealer has and they have not let me down yet. i love being able to drive 15min. if theres a problem. thursday morning i have an appointment to install ram and setup drive.should take 20min. i love my Local dealer. made my transfer to the Mac as painless as possible.
ill let you know friday what kind of difference i get with 1gig

  • Recording drums with iMac g5 and compression - performance?

    Hello,
I bought my wife an iMac g5 1.8 ghz last year (before they upgraded to the ATI cards - grr) and I'm possibly going to try to find a PowerMac g5 on eBay so she can use a better video card. Currently I'm using Windows XP and Cakewalk Sonar for recording but I want to use her old iMac if I find a PowerMac for her.
I will need a new sound card with at least 7 inputs, I already have done some research on this but any suggestions on cards that will work well in the scenario I'm about to describe would be great. I need to record 7 tracks at once (for drums) and I will need to run a compressor on 5 of them indpendently (snare, bass drum, and 3 toms) using Logic, and I'm not sure if I should compress these in realtime as they are tracked using plugins, or after they are recorded.
For those of you with experience doing this - should I be able to record 7 tracks simultaneously using a 1.8 ghz, 1 gig of ram iMac g5 with decent performance? The songs I'm working on have 2 vocal parts, drums, guitar, and bass with a little reverb / delay / compression used througout but my main concern is tracking the drums without the sound "dropping out".
Any feedback on if her iMac would work for this would be great. It's running 10.3 but I'll probably upgrade to tiger if I go this route when I get the new sound card and LE7.
    Thanks,
    -Jayme

Jayme, I'm running logic on a powerbook with FAR less poke than the G5 imac. I'm using the Edirol FA 101.
The most I've been able to record at once was when I was testing my lacie firewire drive, so take that into account. But my machine managed to record 10 inputs while simultaniously playing back 32 channels at 24bit @ 96khz.
I think for what you need it'll be fine. The harddrive in the iMac is probably a lot faster than my built in drive, but probably not quite up to what my lacie can do, so bare that in mind, although the difference should be fairly minimal.
With the compression, if you're going to be compressing with a plug in either way, whether it's pre or post recording then you may as well do it after recording. That way you can spend more time getting it right. Pus as you'll already be firmly within the digital domain no amount of compression will protect against clipping caused by recording too loud. If you were gonna use external analogue compressors my advice would be opposite to this.
Plus LE7 doesn't allow you to do this anyway, I just thought I'd give you my reasoning first.
Anyways I can basically assure you the performance of the imac should be more than enough to keep you going mate.

  • Video and game performance Satellite P100-434

I got myself a nice new P100-434 just 2 weeks ago, When tring to play a game or a DVD It starts of ok but after a short time the frame rate drops right of then comes back up then back down..
I took it back to the shop and they gave me a new one but the same thing happens.
Anyone else had noticed the same. If so tell me how to handle with it.

I've had the exact same problem for a number of weeks, exchanged for a new one (identical notebook) and I still have the problem. I've even tried to get it fixed but to no avail. The guy I took it to seemed to think it had something to do with the DVD drive but to me it looks like a power supply issue. I put the videocard slider down to "balanced" and the problem essentially goes away, no more random bouts of extreme slowdown. However, this forces me to play at far lower settings that what I could originally achieve without lowering the power. (but suffering the said bouts of extreme slowdown)
The difference here is that i'm running XP and still get the problem. Anyone know what causes this? I'd like to actually be able to use my videocard at its full potential.

  • Imac aluminum and games. Beach Ball forever.

Would I be right in assuming that the video card in this thing is not really up to par for 3d work. Does the card have known problems?
Pool balls , any balls , chemical models , look like crumpled wads of paper.
Should the beach ball appear for the opening of every folder? The machine is loaded only with the software it came with and is slower than a ten year old windows AMD first generation machine.
    Len Smith for Dr.Smith

Sounds like your using all of your available RAM. I would suggest doing what the other poster suggested and buy new RAM.

  • My solution for: Slow Installs and poor performance

So up until today, most of anyting on XP or even vista 64 ultimate was taking a very long time to install or copy from one part of the drive to another. Startup would grow longer and game performance was dying and only once ever did reinstalling the OS do anything. No matter what I did, nothing would fix the problem.
I ran multiple utilities (disk utility, disk warrior, tech tool deluxe, etc) but none said that there was a hardware problem. But this issue I was having (and I know some of you do) was definitely related to the computer. From my experience, I determined that there was no way this mac was perfect.
So I scheduled a service and repair at my apple store (under warranty). When it was done a few days later, sure enough, I was told that even though the utilities we users can use on our end to diagnose problems didn't find any problems, the hard drive did not pass apple's detailed inspection and was replaced.
In conclusion, I say that if you are having this problem, run disk utility and if you have the extra protection plan, download the Tech Tool Deluxe that apple provides on the support site. Disk utility may find some permission and disk issues but if Tech Tool doesnt find anything even on the surface scan, take it in to the apple store to have a Genius look at it. If it's not under warranty, it's up to you whether or not you want to spend that money. Overall, my computer both on Leopard and XP now runs just as it should.
    Hope that helps.

    did not work for me

  • Games performance on new iMac?

    Hi all!
I want to buy a mac, but!
My brother and I like to play games like Oblivion, Stalker, Steam-games and other. We're waiting for a new powerful Macs from Apple and here they are!
    Now, the questions:
    - could You tell me about game performance on a new iMac with ATI 2600Pro Video card using or not Boot Camp and WinXP?
Cuz, if the performance will be slow, then we should to buy a Mac Pro, which is a bit expensive
    Regards,
    Alex

The performance of the 2600pro card will not be sufficient to run the newest DX10 and latest DX9 games in the native screen resolution (which is 1080i aka 1920x1080).
So you will either need to play at a lower resolution (which will not look good) or buy a MacPro or PC form gaming.
Hmm not sure if your correct there tank. Acording to the ATI website it can. Now before someone says it I know that the info on there is for the pci express version but isn't it the same card inside the imac?
Edit: Sorry tank just noticed you said native screen res ... I can imagine it would strugle at that res.

Dear Paul, thank you very much for your time and answer, I followed those steps, somehow it helped the performance of my Imac, is faster now, but the screen issue about the very High contrast colours is still there. Since I am a photographer I am very depending on the screen calibration. I am worried that I came to damage the video card when I shut down the computer from the swicth when It was frozed.

Are you wanting to import iCal to the MacBook Air. Since iCloud doesn't work with 10.6 OSX you probably don't have any data in iCloud yet?

    iMac 10.1, OS X 10.7.5
4 GB RAM (2 of 4 slots used)
201 GB free on 999.35 GB HD
The iMac gets slower the longer I use the Internet - to the point that it takes several seconds for each typed character to appear.  This is very noticeable with the online browser game Forge of Empires.  But, it happens even if not logged on to that game.
Turning the iMac off and restarting it brings it back to what seems like full speed for an hour or so.  Then, it starts to noticeably slow down again.

1st thing : from my point of view upgrade your mac os to latest version.
(their is mac os x mavericks from apple its free for upgrade so download it and install it.)
2nd thing : then upgrade your all browser plugins to latest version.
3rd thing : and use ccleaner to keep clean your mac from junk data or other unuseable data that are created.
4th thing : verify and repair your disk permissions with the use of disk utility or ccleaner
i am sure your computer recover speed.

  • IMac G3 still ok for educational software and games ?

I'm planning to buy an iMac G3 (around 500Mhz or better with DVD-ROM) for the kids. I just don't want them to be using my iMac G5 to run educational software and games. My kids are nearly 3 years old so I'm talking about very simple stuff here. But I was wondering : is an iMac G3 still enough to run those kind of things ? I found one, a Snow 500Mhz DVSE with DVD-drive and 640Mb of RAM and a 30Gb HD for €100 (must be about $140) in mint condition. But it's still a G3. I know there's a huge amount of educational software and games out there which can be bought for a few euros/dollars and that software will run efforlessly on a G3. But wouldn't I be better off spending a bit more on a G4 eMac (that would actually be around €300-$440), but then again, why spend that much money on a "play" computer for kids who are likely to bash the screen and keyboard now and again...
    Your opinions please...

    Hey Rincewind,
Kinichi makes a good point about the durability of the G3s. However I've got 8 in my basement and 30 or so out on donation and my kids and parents have 3. These were all picked up used at garage sales or donated and many have been running for over 5 years now.
That said I'm used to paying less than $40 each for them. Often people give them to me for donation.
I run 9.2.2 in all the one's that go to kindergarten kids with software like:
Kid Pix Studio Deluxe including the latest 4
    Memory Fun
    Alphabet Express CD
    Arthur's Birthday
    Curious George ABC.
    Tortoise & Hare
    TT2.
    DLCS - Kindergarten
    Carnival Countdown
    Pocahontas
    Zoombini
    All the Living Books series.
note-I run SMIs of all these so you don't need the CD to run the program.

  • My iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when Iog off an account. I looked at the Console for a log but I am not sure what I am looking for. What is the best way to try to find what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have an issue where my iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when I log my wife's account off. I'd like to get it resolved as it is very annoying. We switch between accounts all the time and everytime it crashes I lose a bunch of info from my account. Can anyone help me understand how to fix this issue?
After the reboot a window tells me that my system has recovered from a seriour issue (sounds much like Window$ to me...) and a crash report is show:

If you think getting your web pages to appear OK in all the major browsers is tricky then dealing with email clients is way worse. There are so many of them.
If you want to bulk email yourself, there are apps for it and their templates will work in most cases...

This one will create the form, database and send out the emails...

The alternative is to use a marketing service if your business can justify the cost. Their templates are tested in all the common email clients...

  • Can i perform SDK 7 Compilation while maintaining SDK6 look and feel for my App

In our organization we test the App using visual specs and our existing visual specs are aligned with SDK 6 look and feel. When i compile my app with SDK 7 the visual display of the App changes completely and is no longer in sync with the visual specs used for testing. As SDK 7 compilation is a mandate for post Feb 1 submission, is it possible to compile the code with SDK 7 while maintaining SDK 6 visual look and feel?

What i am actually trying to do is to maintain the existing SDK6 UI Look and Feel on iOS7. Apple has issued a mandate to have all Apps compiled with SDK7 for App Store submission post Feb1, 2014. If i compile with SDK7, even if i set the deployment target as iOS6, when my app runs on iOS7 it will have the new Apple's iOS7 look and feel. How can i accomplish this?

  • Bad game performance, but, why?

I got my new computer yesterday. It's a macintosh 2ghz 20-inch iMac, with Memory of 512 mb ram and under the memory section in about this computer it says its running at 667mhz. I have 256mb ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card and 207.96 gb free in my macintosh HD.
I have been having really crappy game performance. THe only game I have is UT2004, but I can't play it at all with the graphics turned up, and while single player works once i put them down to average quality, but even at LOWEST quality multiplayer is really hiccupy. Why is this and can I fix it?

    Hi there,
here is the link to explain the memory you need to buy and how to fit it yourself....(Very easy to do, by the way)

With regards to how much it costs, the Apple online store will sell it to you...check it out!
    Are you in the UK?
