17 inch i7 Macbook Pro Snow leopard install problems

Got my new 17 inch i7 MBP, powered it up everythings fine. So I go to re partition the drive and do a clean system install. Middle of the install it fails. Log file shows it cant read files from the DVD.
So I grab a snow leopard install version 10.6 to install from. It will not boot the mbp i7. It hangs on the apple screen with no activity circle underneath the apple logo. Same for 10.6.2 SL install disc I have.
I then try to install SL to a external drive and update it to 10.6.3. It boots all my non i7 macs here but when I try to boot the i7 mbp it hangs again on the apple screen.
I really want to use the i7 machine and Im dreading waiting on apple to send me mbp 17 replacement disks. I have no problems buying a 10,6,3 version of the SL installer but after my experiences with 10.6 and 10.6.2 and the external disk to upgrade to 10.6.3 I have a feeling the i5/i7 machines need specific installer discs.
Is any one aware of this or run in to it yet ? Thanks.

The only OS installer that will work with your MBP is the one that came with the Mac originally so you will need to wait for a new set.

Hi, my photosmart C440 printer suddenly stopped working and wont print. The message says "Sending data..." forever but never prints. The printer is on but doesn't respond to what my computer says. I have a macbook pro snow leopard OS. This has never happened before, I didn't make any changes to the system. When the problem first appeared, I reinstalled the driver and was able to print once, then it stopped working. Then I installed snow leopard and it stil doesn't work.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
To restore the MacBook Pro to factory settings:
    1. Make a backup of your files because everything will be erased.
    2. Insert the Snow Leopard disc and press the C key while your Mac is starting to start from the DVD.
    3. Go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. Close Disk Utility and install Mac OS X

    1. replace my current internal HD and convert it to external HD for use as secondary boot drive,
No.  That has no advantage for you.
leave the internal HD alone and purchase an external HD that I can clone and use as boot drive in case of emergency?
Yes.  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a boot drive and as a backup (in addition to Time Machine).  CCC allows one to make incremental changes as well as creating a copy of the recovery partition.  This means that if run on a proper schedule, you data will; be well protected and the MBP can be in operation very quickly if the internal HDD should fail.
A clone should be a 2.5", 9 mm thick SATA HDD so that it will fit inside the MBP.  It can be powered from the USB port thus not requiring an AC outlet.  In my collection of HDDs, I favor HGST and Seagate products.  I principally use OWC enclosures that allow for USB, Firewire and eSATA connections.  These are expensive but one can use a more modest one as well of one can tolerate longer data transfer times.
Here is a link showing some available SATA HDDs that will complement your MBP:

You can look for enclosures on the same web site.
    Ciao.

Even the iPhone, iPod and iPad seems to be fine. It is just the dang gam it Macbook pro and it is driving me crazy.
All fixes tried, changing wireless mode, security, PRAM ... only thing left is to rebuild the mac which i was hoping I can avoid somehow.

Well, you can try easing the shift key up with something thin but flexible (credit card sort of thing) but if the contacts below are stuck you may need to get it seen to by an authorised repairer.
If you can borrow a keyboard (a PC one will probably work as long as the password is alpha-numeric with no special characters) you can at least get in to backup your HD before going for repair.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Want to print from Macbook pro (snow leopard) to laserwriter 8500

I found advice about printing using IP but I am not able to get that to work no how. Advice was about sending command lines to printer. Currently via ethernet through a netgear hub that always used to work with my old desktop PPC iMac G4.

Call Apple and order the Snow Leopard install DVD from which you can install 10.6.3
Then upgrade to 10.6.8 to get the App Store to download 10.7
But first check to besure your Mac is capable of having 10.7 installed on it.
Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later with the Mac App Store installed
At least 4GB of additional disk space to accommodate the download, but more is obviously recommended

  • Cannot install GoLive 8.01 0n new MacBook Pro/Snow leopard

Purchased a brand new MacBook Pro (with the new Snow leopard) so I could leave my house and still work.
The most important application I use is Adobe golive CS2 8.01.
I have the 6.0 disk, and the upgrade registration number but they will not install in the MacBook Pro/Snowleaopard. I've tried 50 times. It will allow an install of the 6.0, but says my registration number is invalid for the upgrade.
Adobe doesn't support the product anymore on any level. I'm beside myself. The laptop is worthless to me without that application.
I've tried replacing the keylogin, prefs reinstalls etc... nothing.
I'm desperate. If anyone has any ideas, please help.

Downgrading, install GL, then upgrade sounds like a good move. Let me know if it works... if you do it. I understand the frustration of having to go to all this trouble. I've had my share of problems lately. First my MBP hard drive went bad. Had to reinstall everything. Then I took it on a trip so I could keep up with client work, and it died again. Took it to Apple in Portland, Maine. They had to ship it off for repairs again. This time the Logic Board and Video Display. Now my G5 is acting up again. Often too busy to deal with it.
I'll follow along to see how things go for you. Keep us posted if you would.

  • Snow Leopard Install problems on Macbook Pro with bad optical drive

I've tried this (refer to article below) to install Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro with a bad optical drive, but I am not able to choose a wi-fi network, or install disk after startup. Is there something else I need to do?
To use Remote Install Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server:
Insert the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server Install Disc into the optical disc drive of the other computer.
If the other computer is a Mac, open /Applications/Utilities/Remote Install Mac OS X. On Windows, choose "Remote Install Mac OS X" from the Install Assistant.
Read the introduction and click Continue.
Choose the install disc you want to use, and click Continue.
Choose a network connection: AirPort, if you are using an AirPort network, or Ethernet, if the other computer is on an Ethernet network and you have an optional Apple USB Ethernet Adapter connecting your MacBook Air or Mac mini to the same network. Click Continue.
Restart your MacBook Air or Mac mini and hold down the Option key as it starts up, until you see a list of available startup disks.
Click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, on your MacBook Air or Mac mini choose your AirPort network from the pop-up list.
If the network is secure, you will be prompted for a password. You can enter a private network name by choosing the ellipsis (...) and typing the name.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, when you see the AirPort status icon indicating signal strength, click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
You can now reinstall software, reset your password or run Disk Utility using instructions from the User's Guide.

Are you able to connect the two via Firewire cable? If so you can boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode. Then boot the other computer from the OS X installer disc. The installer should detect the hard drive of the MBP as an eligible target destination.
If you have a spare hard drive or at least 10 GBs of usable space on an external drive, then you can create a small 8 GB partition on that drive. Then clone the installer DVD to that partition using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can then boot the MBP from that partition using OPTION boot: Start the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the cloned DVD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external partition.
Source means the OS X Installer DVD.

  • MACBOOK PRO & SNOW LEOPARD - OVERHEATING

Hey everyone, I have a macbook pro, early 2008 model 15 inch, 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive.
Since installing SNOW LEOPARD, my machine is now overheating.
This was an issue I believe with the previous version of Leopard, but a patch was made by apple, and the overheating issue was fixed. But I'm guessing they may have forgotten about this particular problem with the new OS.
Does anybody know anything about this or having the same problem ????

I'm not sure what you mean by over heating but since going to SL my MBP is running hot at times. For example right now I have only itunes and firefox running and my cpu temp is at 70 degrees and the fans are running at ~3200 rpm.
According to Activity monitor my cpu usage is about 10% (4% user, 6% system)
It happens when I'm not doing anything as well, e.g. the other day I turned my MBP on and logged into my account, didn't open any programs just logged in. Came back about half an hour later and it was running hot. CPU temp in the high 60's and running at over 3200 rpm and the casing just above the esc key very hot to the touch.
So it's not just you and I would also like to know if this is normal or is there a fix for this?
    I have a 15inch MacBook Pro 5,1 2.66Ghz 4Gb RAM.

  • HP Photosmart C5580 and MacBook Pro Snow Leopard wireless printer with router

I have a macbook pro OSX operating system and a C5580 HP Photosmart printer.  I have spent hours with netgear as I did purchase a new router getting my macbook pro to print wirelessly.  Whatever the fix it is temporary and my private tech has to take control of my computer to get to work again.
    1. am I printing with bluetooth? through router?
    2. what is happening whenever it gets out of sync and how can I fix myself?
    3. computer says "idle" but shows device connected.  I can print test page wirelessly, but not current document. Documents print when I connect with usb cable.
I felt I should contact HP since I think it is their problem though netgear has been very helpful.  I understand that I do need USB to scan, but shouldn't have to have it to print. We have downloaded all of the most current drivers and software.

Tell me about your network - router brand/model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and ISP type (DSL, Cable, etc).
If you loaded the HP software from the printer CD and unless your CD says it specifically supports 10.6 Snow Leopard, you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Now, run a Software Update.
Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.
You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.
    Answers:
    1. No, routers don't do bluetooth.  If they are wireless routers they use wi-fi (802.11).
    2. I don't know, you have not told me enough about your symptoms or system.
    3. Same as #2.

  • Macbook pro snow leopard 10.6.8 with VMsoftware partition can i upgrade to Yosemite

I have a MacBook Pro laptop bought in 2010 using Snow Leopard 10.6.8. 4 GB of Memory and 2.66GHZintel core i7.  I have also partitioned the drive with VMware to use a windows application.  If I have backed up all personal photos documents, music, movies etc and I don't mind if I lose all the info in the partition VMware, is it ok to
update to Yosemite. Is there anything special I need to do, like uninstall the VMware first?  Also do I need more than 8GB on my hard drive?
Any one done anything similar and if so were there any issues?
    thanks for any help,

VirusBarrier needs to be uninstalled using the original installer. That installer will have a button that allows you to uninstall the software. If you no longer have the original installer, you will need to re-download it.
BitDefender must be removed using the uninstaller provided by the developer. That uninstaller is found on the .dmg file that also contained the original installer. If you no longer have that, you will need to re-download it.
Do not try to locate and remove these items manually! They must be removed using the uninstaller!
Note that it's a bad idea to have two anti-virus programs like these installed and active at the same time. That can easily cause all manner of problems, including serious performance problems. For more information about protecting yourself against malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.
You also have SpeedIt installed, which is a badly outdated program that has been discontinued. The developer is no longer in business. I would be surprised if it wasn't causing problems. Unfortunately, because it is so old and the developer's site is gone, I cannot find any uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. See if you have a SpeedIt uninstaller somewhere. If you still have the SpeedIt installer somewhere, that may include the uninstaller.
If removing those programs doesn't fix the problem, the only other third-party kernel extensions you have installed are:
    com.markspace.driver.Android.RNDIS    1.2
    com.roxio.BluRaySupport    1.1.6
You'll need to remove those using the uninstaller provided by the developers (markspace.com and roxio.com).
