17 inch MBP Loose screen verdict

Today I exchanged my 15' MBP with a 17'. I love it! No Whine, and heat is very reasonable. The biggest problem I have is the loose display hinge!
I know a lot of people are talking about this, but I really need to know, hopefully from someone at Apple, if this is by design or something that they will fix in the future!
Holding this laptop at any thing more than 15 degrees causes the screen to fall over and close making it impossible to use on anything other than a flat surface (no more MBP in bed for me!).
For me this is a show stopper. I love the machine and if Apple is going to be replacing the hinges soon I'm willing to keep it and send it for repair when the replacement is available; otherwise I'll just return it.
So, hopefully someone from Apple, is this something that "needs a fix"?
Cheers,
AT
MacBook Pro 17'   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   PowerMac G4

I receved my 17 inch macbook pro also with a loose hinge. i contacted apple who said i should send it in and wait 3 weeks for a new one. I said i couldn't and could I send it in in august when i was done with my college semester and they told me that the screen could shatter from the loose hinge and I would have to pay for it. I finally convinced them to let me return the one I had after I received the new one. And guess what? the new one also has the same problem! I don't knwo what the solution is but the support guy I dealt with was a total jerk. I had to go back to my salesperson to get any satisfaction and now that the new one has the same problem, I dont' know what I shoudl do.

  • Late-2013 15 inch MBP Retina screen issue (one part whiter than rest, see photo)

    Hi all.
I've literally had my new 15-inch mbp for a less than a month (got it Oct. 31, 2013). My screens already jacked up. Looks like the lower right corner of the display has suffered some sort of area-wide color change, so that the area appears white in color than the rest of the screen. I have no idea how this happened. Any thoughts?
It's still under warranty so i'll just take it in, but what could this possibly be?
    Thanks

It also seems to be changing shape, and getting a few flecks of the old brightness level over time. Sees second photo taken two hours after the first photo.

  • My late 2011 15 inch mbp screen shuts down and don't turn on

My late 2011 15 inch mbp screen shuts down and don't turn on. Sometimes goes down after it gets in the sleep mode but another times it goes down when i'm working on it. The battery lights and the magsafe light still work but the screen doesn't respond, i have to shut down the computer and only after a couple of tries to turn it on i the screen wakes up. Also, sometimes when i turn it on the screen gets fragmented, like in the image. Does anyone have any solution? thanks.

  • Receeived 17 inch MBP replacement for 15 inch - Differences

    Having had 2 15 inch MBP's, I have now received a 17 inch.
    Initial observations are impressive !
    1. The top and lower case, left of the IR receiver are a good, tight fit with no gap. Infact the case is a snug fit all round.
    2. The screen hinge feels more smooth
    3. Heat ? What heat ?
    4. Whine ? What whine ?
My initial conclusion is that Apple were really pushing the envelope with the 15 MBP and that things are much more comfortable inside the 17 inch. I guess the extra space in the 17 inch allows this.
The sound is so much better as well.
The 17 inch is the way it was supposed to be.

Yeah I have also had 2 15' MBP and they have had the issues. I got one of the very first 17' MBP and I haven't had any problem with it. I agree right out of the box the sound is fantastic and plus the 17' is much cooler than the 13' MB and 15' MBP.

  • TS2948 13" New Air with a Loose Screen

I have a brand new 13" air that moves on its own past 100 degrees of tilt.  This is very annoying and the machine is two weeks old. Does anyone else have a new 13" Air with a loose screen?  Is this a repairable problem?

Is it in your lap when it moves? If so then normal
moves on its own on a flat solid surface?   not normal
As per Apple.com, the video above doesnt fall within this parameter:
Learn what you can do if you experience one or more of these issues with the hinges on your MacBook Air.
    Unable to close lid completely.
Broken or cracked plastic near one or both of the hinges.
More than one inch (2.54cm) of free play while opening or closing the lid.
Lid falls freely into closed position from a 30-degree open position. (From a closed position, open the lid approximately 30 degrees and let go.)
    END from Apple.com
The hinge  in the macbook AIR hinge, a friction hinge.
Due to the thin nature of the LCD backlit LED monitor on the Air, you would NOT WANT a very tight hinge.
Why? Excessive hinge resistance would cause the screen to BOW (and possibly crack), especially on a longer fulcrum from the hinge in the case of the 13" screen...... Ergo it is designed logically to be “looser than” a traditional macbook Pro's hinges for a very good reason.
Friction Hinge: A device with torque between two parts on a common axis.
A friction hinge is also commonly known as a:
Constant Torque Hinge, Position Hinge, Clutch, Torque Hinge, or Detent Hinge.
    Common Applications include:
Laptop computers; lids, doors and enclosures; positioning device for controls, monitors, arms, seat rests
Contact Apple for in shop diagnostic
Ive owned 3 Airs, some of the friction hinges are a hair tighter than others, but nearly all (never seen one that wouldnt) WILL IF you lift them up when at a 90 degree angle, ....if you lift up quickly, or tilt it back a bit,...the screen will flop open.
Friction hinge in the AIR see pic below  (there are NO SPRINGS in these kind of hinges)

  • Best combo 15 inch MBP

Looking into getting a 15 inch MBP.  Want to order it online because I want the hi-resolution display.  The thing is that I'm looking to maximize the longevity, power, etc of the MBP and wanted to get some advice on the best customization options for it.  Basically getting the most out of my money (that excludes getting max everything :-) ).  I am looking for a desktop replacement which would be my main workstation holding all my media (music, movies, pics etc.). I don't do anything serious like graphic design or things of that nature to kind of give you an idea of what type of customer that I am.  Hopes this makes sense and your input is much appreciated.

awesome thanks for the input.  The anti-glare really makes that much of a difference huh?
A laptop is portable, exposed to many different environments.
You want to use the anti-glare MacBook Pro near the pool while watching the kids?, no problem.
You want to use the anti-glare in class or at the office with overhead lights or bright windows you can't control, it's no problem.
Glossy screens look good in the stores, but they are not practical to use in the real world unless used in a darkened, reflection controlled environment.
Desktop machines like iMac's, people can place them in a dark corner to reduce reflections, but a laptop one can't change the environment everywhere they go.
The "anti-glare films" people try to place on their glossy screen laptops afterwards are expensive, bubble, peel and collect dirt around the edges, requiring their occasional replacement. Makes the Macbook Pro look like cheap PC junk.
The "wow factor" of  "black bezel" and "oh shiny" screen of glossy MacBooks wears off in about 3-4 days, and then after that you perhaps impress a few of your friends.
So lets say 5 days of "wow factor" and then your down to using the machine as a tool as intended for the next 3-5 years, your not going to care after that if the bezel is metal or black, your going to want to use the machine with as little hassle as possible.
With glossy screen laptops, people make all sorts of physical adjustments in classrooms and offices to try to avoid the reflections, they sit funny, slouch, scrunch etc., tilt the screen in weird ways and so forth.
Many people complain of eyestrain and headaches from using glossy screens for long periods of time. On a anti-glare screen, one can use it for 10-20 hours a day and be just fine.
The high res of the new anti-glare MacBook Pro screens are really nice, you should take a look as Apple has them in the Stores, it's not the "dull matte" look of previous computer screens which made people attracted to the glossy ones in the first place.

  • Macbook 13 inch late 2008 screen not illuminated on one side

    Hi Apple Community,
I need help! My late 2008 13 inch aluminium Macbook screen has 'died' on one side resulting in one side being noticeably dark. The left side has no problems, only the right side.
I am a student living in New Zealand where there is no Apple store in the country I can go to. Local service shop says just to look at it and confirm that one side is dark (which any 2 year old cad identify that it is) will cost a ridiculous $100. Estimated cost will be around $1000 to replace screen.
Has anyone had the same problem and how have you solved it? What is the cost of repair or is there something I can do it help it?
    Macbook specs:
    MacBook, 13inch, Aluminium, Late 2008
Processor: 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4 GB
    Software: OS X 10.9.4 (Mavericks)
    I do not have AppleCare
    Thanks!

Try these folks at www.usedmac.com.  You may have some luck getting technical help from them by email.  It is more difficult by phone.  You can look through the parts list for what they have in stock for your computer model to get an idea of the prices.  You probably won't need any heavy or large parts so some priority mail  service won't break the bank.  Your problem may simply be a cable but even a back light led or controller circuit board should not be too expensive.  It will require some careful work on your part for replacement.
    good luck.

  • About 7/16 of an inch of my screen for my Iphone 4 no longer responds ever since the new update

Ever since the iOS 7 update about 7/16 of an inch on my screen no longer works meaning if i where typing in safari an hit the globe button that changes the keyboard to what ever you have on your list (for example Emoji) i would end up having to back out of certain apps or have to turn my phone sideways to type key board style in order to even change the keyboard back to english that as well as all my buttons with in the 7/16 range no longer respond so if i wanted to delete an app i would need to drag it into an app folder and then move away from the 7/16 zone in order to delete it i have never had this problem until the update and although minor it is annoying. If anyone has any ideas on what is causing this to happen or a solution other then upgrading due my 2yr contract with At&t is still on going until next year.

I think the problem is that the iPod got set to Manually manage music and videos.  It needs to be set up for automatic syncing again.  Just unchecking that Manually manage music and videos setting does not do it.
In iTunes 12, select the iPod in iTunes (using the device button), so that you see the iPod's "management" screen.  In the sidebar (along left side of screen), there are two headings (Settings and On My Device).  Under Settings, click on Music.  To the right, you see the iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
Check the box at the top for Sync Music.  That turns ON automatic syncing for music.  Below that, choose the option to sync Entire music library (assuming your music library fits completely on your iPod).  Otherwise, you can choose the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres and make your selections below.  Then click Apply.

I'm from India. I'm planning to buy MD101HN/A 13-inch MBP. Please help me with complete details of the product and whether there is any problem with buying this one at this point of time. I want to know which generation the processor is of and whether the OS can be upgraded to Yosemite. Thanks guys in advance.

I dont know about this particular model but it should be able to run Yosemite. As long as the Mac was released after 2007, It should run Yosemite, the new ones may have more featurrs and definitely will be faster though.

  • How to upgrade my MBP glossy screen to antiglare??

I already purchased the MBP 15 however I want to change the screen to antiglare. I know I can install an antiglare film but this hits the image.
How to upgrade my MBP glossy screen to antiglare after I already purchased the MBP? Is it possible to do it through apple?

That would mean replacing the top cover of hte MBP, something on the order of $500...and would have to be done by Apple or an authorized Apple repair or it will void the warranty.  You could try talking to an Apple store genius bar person and see if they would do that but it will not be cheap.

  • 46 inch led touch screen?

Had this crazy idea the other day that i wanted to turn one of those new thin led screens into a touchscreen to make the ultimate drawing board for photoshop.
I see 46 inch overlays with mac drivers for touchscreen and multi touch, and cheap 46 inch led tv screens that are only an inch tall. So was wondering if anyone had done this yet.
Would lay the tv flat on my angled drafting table and use it for digital painting in photoshop mainly. But it would be nice to have it easily angled back to a wall mount or standing position. Im kinda waiting to see what lion will offer for touchscreen support and will probably just get another mac pro to use it solely for drawing and painting in the home studio.
Of course, a 60 inch lcd wiyh a 42-46 inch touchscreen overlay would be a nice touch so i can paint lazy with my arm resting on the board/monitor.
Any suggestions or noted completed projects of this sort?

  • I could fry eggs on mine! plus... bottom 3 inchs of my screen is messed up!

so... i thinks its time to upgrade to the macbook!
my powerbook still works fine, aside from when i open it or close it the bottom 3 inchs of the screen flicker or turn black.
so for fryin eggs... it gets SO hot i used it to keep me warm sometimes while i surf the net! the adapter jack (the metal end) is also VERY warm, too hot to touch!
so is this happening to anyone else? i did the battery exchange ages ago! or is this just the end?
    thanks

Run the hardware test that came with the machine. This could tell you if you are truly having a hardware issue. Make sure the adapter you are using is compatible with your machine, and not frayed. See my FAQ*:

  • How to fix a loose screen

The screen of my PowerBook has a small amount of play (about 3/4") in its forward and back movement when in the open position. Is there a why that I can fix this on my own? Thank you for your help.

    Dear Bennyb,
I had a "loose screen" due to a broken hinge. I glued it to the center bar only
with marine epoxy back and front. This bought me another 6 months. If you want details for fixing it the proper way try:

  • How much memory can use my early 2011 15 inch MBP ?

I'm looking to buy new memory for my early 2011 15 inch MBP because it's running way to slow ( i have 4GB memory). I want to put 16 GB on it. Will it support it?

I too want to add memory to my 15" MacBook Pro, early 2011.
It has: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7. Currently I have 8GB installed. I saw this post and thought yahoo! HOWEVER, when I look on Apple's site it says no. That the memory is tapped at 8GB. I really hope to go to 16 GB.
Here is the link I found:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270
So, since this post says the laptop will support 16 GB and the above says only 8 GB. Please help.
    Thanks,
