17 inch Unibody 2.8 Summer 2009 - exhibits rattle in right speaker?

I've read everywhere on this. Basically, I just purchased a Unibody 17 at Oakbrook, IL apple - and it exhibits a rattle when the volume is up above 60 or 70% when playing certain audio tracks. For example, a movie in iphoto or certain songs. It almost appears as if the frequencies are set really high and the subwoofer in the unibody vibrates to the point of distortion.
It's pretty annoying and from what I've read, it appears every computer exhibits this to a certain extent. Should I go through the hassle of replacement or should I just live with it?
What about you guys?

I have a Late 2008 Unibody 15" MacBook Pro with the exact same problem as you. I sent mine in on 6/4 for this problem, a bad DVD drive, fan/heat issues and I still haven't gotten it back after nearly 10 days. It's been terrible, hours on hold, many phone calls, no call-backs, mysterious phone line disconnects, you name it. I've been horribly unlucky.
For your audio problem, you can go to the link below and play back either the 250, 440 or 1000 KHz tones. On my computer the 440Khz tone generates the vibration. Funny thing is that Apple is telling me that my speakers are within spec but they don't mention where those specs are or how they measured mine. A friend of mine just bought a new 2009 MBP 15" and it does not have this problem, all tones play flawlessly with no vibration from the right speaker. Due to my experience, I don't recommend that you send it in to Apple. You are within the return period. Take your computer to an Apple store and play the test tones on a computer just like yours and if it plays cleanly, demand an exchange... avoid sending in your computer, I sure as heck will from now on... So much for paying extra for Apple "Care"...

  • Summer 2009 Workshops for Adobe Visual Communicator 3

Once again I will be offering summer workshops for users of Adobe Visual Communicator 3. Workshops will be held at Adobe's Worldwide showcase school facility for VC3 and led by Rob Zdrojewski, Adobe Education Leader and Community Expert for VC3.
Topics will cover school newscasts, classroom video projects, uploading shows, student crew jobs, hardware recommendations, connecting equipment, setting up a studio, etc. I will show how you can begin a studio for around $500 and up, depending on your budget and needs.
Summer 2008 workshops sold out fast, so I am offering a survey to get input prior to scheduling workshops for summer 2009. Please complete the survey if you are interested in learning more about VC3 for education, business, or personal uses. As an incentive, I will be awarding a copy of VC3, and my two Training DVDs to a chosen responder to the survey ($267 value).
My brief survey can be found here:

I have decided to ditch Visual Communicator as an option.
Apart from the poor support, I have tested the Trial version and it would not make sense to use the application in its cirrent form.
In a ten minute period using 2 cameras as a test, the application froze and crashed four times. Not acceptable as reliability is crucial.
The test was done on a Windows 7 64 bit machine with 4 physical Xeon Quad core 3GHZ processors and 32 GB RAM with a 2GB Graphics card, so performance was not the issue.
the application is just not stable.
I am getting better support and results from both Wirecast 4 and Cutfour.

You have basically verified that the issue is NOT with your MBP, but with this particular Wi-Fi network. Even though it may be unsecured, the provider may have elected to configure it for MAC filtering. In this case I am referring to the MAC (Media Access Control) address and not your Mac laptop itself. If this has been enabled, your Mac would only be able to connect if the Mac's MAC address was added to that filter.

We're less than two months away from the 2nd annual JSF Summit conference, co-sponsored by JSFCentral and the No Fluff Just Stuff Symposiums. The conference will take place December 1st-4th in warm, sunny Orlando, FL.
We already have an all-star lineup of speakers such as Ed Burns, Matthias Wessendorf, Dan Allen, Ted Goddard, Keith Donald, David Geary and several others, covering every aspect of JSF 2.0 plus JSF 1.x, Seam, MyFaces, ICEfaces, Trinidad, Spring/JSF integration, Comet, Portlets, JSR 299, testing, and more.
But Jay Zimmerman and I wanted to make the show even better, so I'm happy to announce two full-day workshops on Seam and JSF 1.x, and several new sessions covering RichFaces, JSR 299, PrimeFaces, amd more.

The Oracle related ones will probably available for download via the content builder etc shortly.
Mine can be seen here http://www.slideshare.net/MGralike , but you will not be able to download them (although maybe you are allowed via the Oracle content builder part). The reasons regarding them (aka mine) to be on "seen only", are that there went a lot of work and stress into them, the topics are not always clear if you weren't their (mostly slides with only pictures) so I want it to be in the right context and/or my company paid for the time making them (so I am only the representative on this on behalve of them).
If you have a valid reason that you me really need them then you could always drop me a line.

  • Help With Increasing Storage: MacBook Pro (Summer 2009) Aluminum Unibody

Can anyone recommend an online store and a certain product that will provide me with the means to increase the disk space of my hard drive? I bought this MacBook with 160GB and would like to increase it by at least 50GB or so (although if they only come in sets of 160GB or something, so be it). I would also like the links to any blogs or video tutorials explaining how to implement the new storage on my own, as the Apple Store recommends we do it on our own.
    Thanks.

You cannot simply increase the storage space of an existing drive, but you can replace it with a larger drive. Suitable drives are available in capacities up to 1 TB. A good source is OWC.

  • The 15-inch unibody is faster than the 17-inch unibody flagship?

Macworld benchmarks has the 15 edging out the 17.
And that is Before yesterday's speedbump for the 15.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/139139/2009/03/unibody17_inch_macbookpro.html
When they remeasure, will the 15 be substantially faster than the 17-inch flagship?

Historically, the 17-inch has been faster and better in many ways.
I'm sorry, but this is simply incorrect. I will present for you the following specifications from every MBP revision. All specifications represent the high-end 15" and stock 17" of the time which are the two models we are comparing here.
MacBook Pro (Early 2006, Original Revision)
    15.4"/2.16 Ghz (CTO)/1 GB RAM/100GB/256 MB VRAM/$2499
    17"/2.16 Ghz/1 GB RAM/120 GB HD/256 MB VRAM/$2799
    Macbook Pro (Late 2006)
    15.4"/2.33 GHz/2 GB RAM/120 GB HD/256 MB VRAM/$2499
    17"/2.33 GHz/2 GB RAM/160 GB HD/256 MB VRAM/$2799
    Macbook Pro (Mid 2007)
    15.4"/2.4 GHz/2 GB RAM/160 GB HD/256 MB VRAM/$2499
    17"/2.4 GHz/2 GB RAM/160 GB HD/256 MB VRAM/$2799
    Macbook Pro (Early 2008)
    15.4"/2.5 GHz/6 MB L2/2 GB RAM/250 GB HD/512 MB VRAM/$2499
    17"/2.5 GHz/6 MB L2/2 GB RAM/250 GB HD/512 MB VRAM/$2799
I think it is pretty evident that in terms of clockspeed, RAM, and VRAM the 15" and 17" have never been too far apart. I don't think 20-40GB of HD space is all that big a deal. Yes, the 17" has had an extra USB/FW port. I don't know if these things qualify as "faster and better in many ways" though. Really, the most significant way that the 17" was "better" was the screen size and resolution as has already been mentioned. Things are no different now than they've been for the last three years. I don't know what they were like in the PPC days because I don't have time to look back that far, but I don't think it matters.
In fact it's slower, and will seem even slower with the 15's speed bump.
It's not slow at all. In fact, it's one of the fastest notebooks that you can buy at all right now. We have already pointed out that you shouldn't take the benchmarks seriously because they have absolutely no statistical significance.
These things are not going to change. If you need the notebook now, you should buy it. If you don't need it, then wait. If you don't want it, then buy something else.

  • My mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15 inch unibody battery will not accept a charge

    HI there one and all!
My mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" unibody laptop will not accept a normal charge using the mag safe cord. I have replaced the original battery with a factory new replacement, but I still have the same results.
The computer powers up and runs only with the mag safe cord attached and when shut down, does not switch from green to orange to indicate the charging mode.
Can anyone be of assistance or perhaps has had a similar issue? Thanks in advance to anyone for their insight and help. If it makes a difference, my computer information is as follows: MacBook Pro 15", Mid 2010
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
                                            Memory.    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics.  Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
                                            Serial number. W80---------------
                                            Software     OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

Please find "System Information" in this folder path---Applications > Utilities---and launch it. When it opens, find "Power" in the left-hand contents pane and click it to get something like this in teh main pane:
Copy everything in the "Battery Information" and copy/paste it here. The number values in that report may help us diagnose what is happening.
Also, did you buy this battery directly from Apple or from another source. There are an increasing number of reports showing up that suggests some counterfeit batteries being sold.

  • How much would it cost to replace a cracked trackpad on a 13 inch unibody Macbook Pro

I think I closed my laptop with something inside and when I reopened it, there was a fairly large crack in my trackpad on my 13 inch Macbook Pro. How much would it cost to get the trackpad replaced?

I suggest you take it the Apple Store and allow them to look at it. The may be much more damage then you are able to see.

  • 2 issues with 13" MacBook Pro (Summer 2009)

(This is my first Mac, by the way.)
    1) and most important: I'm really kind of shocked how poor the font rendering is. I kind of expected it on the web since I've seen the same problems in browsers on non-Microsoft systems like Linux--something about the Microsoft font thing--but I see poor fonts in other apps and even the OS. Like right now if I open my folder in Finder, there are four of the letter U's displayed in icon view. The ones in Documents and Music are blurred on the left side, but the ones in Public and Pictures look more solid. This is just a single example; the same sort of situation is everywhere. All setting are default, although I did try various "font smoothing" options to no avail. Is my screen defective, maybe?
    2) the font size is, IMHO, ridiculously small. Can I do anything, system-wide, to change this. No, I'm not visually impaired. I don't want to cause more problems by "fixing" this one, though (as I've seen happen with changing DPI, etc. in Windows on some LCDs whose native resolution was way too high for their size). I can live with this size, if I have to, but #1 is a real killer.

I'll just assume no one can help then...

  • Macbook pro purchased new summer 2009: anxious to upgrade to snow leopard: ANYONE ever install without backup?   Why not?

Any body do this without timemachine backup successfuly?

im sure they have, but you are risking losing all your data if you do not have a backup.  Something could go wrong during the upgrade.  If the possibility of losing all your data is acceptable, then proceed.  I highly recommend backing up first.

  • What do 3GS users of summer 2009 contracts do?

Now that the WWDC 11’ is over and there was no mention or hint of an iPhone 4S/5 and only the software updates which includes the 3GS andiPhone 4. What do 3GS users who’s contracts including mine are up now…looked like the speculation of a delayed iPhone was true from the rumours months back..
Do I cancel my contract with 02 and just go pay as go till a future Apple iPhone comes out (waiting for a phone that’s not announced)
-Upgrade with 02 now to the white iPhone 4 for 2 years…? (Doesn’t make sense to me signing up to a phone year old and tie down for another 2 years?)
-Continue with contract..? Can you do that but not upgrade...or is this a waste of money?
-Go all out anti Apple and buy a new model from Google’s Android/HTCand forget about Apple?
    -Anything eles?
Any advice would be much appreciated, what would you do.
    Thanks

If the contract is up, there is nothing to cancel.

Again, if the contract is up, it's up.  You're not month to month under the same terms.

If that is what you want to do, then go for it.

Why the concern about doing anything?  This is a personal decision that each and every user in a similar postion must decide for themselves.  No one is forcing you to do anything.

  • Serious graphical / gaming issues w/ Summer 2009 Macbook pro 9400m

Since I've had this computer, it's been behaving wonderfully with all applications I need to use. However, World of warcraft has been an absolute nightmare! Maybe its because of the graphical intensity, but it never used to be this bad! Connection is fine, its video lag...with EVERYTHING TURNED DOWN COMPLETELY. This includes RESOLUTION.
The only thing I'm able to do is quest in a non-popular zone. Otherwise, it's like I hit a button every 4 seconds in 25-man Icecrown raids. I upgraded to 4GB DDR3 ram thinking this would fix my problem, but it just improved load times...that's it. I also thought it could have been a hard drive issue that could be slowing me down. Now I don't know what to think...I'm operating at 59 degrees C and all I'm doing is navigating the web...My fan sometimes becomes loud and obnoxious, but it still doesn't help the graphical problems.
Please help, it makes me want my alienware back

    Hi kwikymart711,
Have you been monitoring the Blizzard Mac support forums? There are *_A LOT_* of users, on various Macs that are experiencing the same problem(s) since 4.0.1's release.
