17" MacBook Pro intel unable to wake after 10.5.3 update

Hello
Since updating to 10.5.3 my 17" laptop will not wake unless I force quit it.
If I close the lid and then open later this happens as well.
Does anyone know how to get over this?
Please keep it simple.
Thanks
Finlay

I have never experienced your problem, but this article (http://installingcats.wordpress.com/2008/05/23/cant-wake-macbook-pro-from-sleep/) seems to be relevant.
I recommend reading the article in full (and also http://www.macworld.com/article/53471/2006/10/sleepmode.html) before doing anything.
Although the instructions are for Tiger, they are still valid for Leopard as far as I can tell.

On most occasions after my 13" MacBook Pro Retina  has been put to sleep (by closing lid or pressing Power  button) overnight  it will not wake up again until I have reset the Systems Management Controller.   Opening the lid, or Power button or Space bar still leaves a black screen.
My wife's new 11" MacBook Air suffers similar problems even after our local Apple Store reinstalled Mavericks in an attempt to resolve the problem..
Any thoughts on a solution would be gratefully received - thanks.

    Hello,

After the computer restarted and installed the update it turned off, then when I tried to turn it on and it didn't do, do you have a similar issue after 10.7.3 update?, the screen never turns on and I can only hear the sound of DVD drive and immediately turns off, can you please help me to solve this issue? Thank you very mucho for your suggestions

  • Macbook Pro HD died/not recognized after latest Java & airport update..

    Hi,
After the latest Java & airport updates, my mbp won't startup.
The only thing i see after the chime is the questionmark folder.
Holding the option button during restart to choose the bootdisk doesn't show the harddisk.
I've resetted pram & smc and that also doesn't fix it.
The mbp was connected to the charger and the battery almost full.
Hope somebody can help me, have been searching but didn't found no answers.
Did found somebody on the forum with a similair/the same problem

Antonio, I'm going to try the instal disk tomorrow(it's almost 02:00 over here, and i'm at my girls house). If the harddisk is recognized, i will try the hardware check and see what's wrong.
Firewire mode is still working, so maybe with a little luck i can access it from my PowerMac. Did this before on my old Powerbook 12inch, when it gave up working properly.
Can you believe this.. Because i needed all the space of my external hd, i copied all my music to my mbp's hd tonight.. didn't expect this to happen.
Before i went to my girls house i was thinking about putting it all back, but couldn't wait..
I don't think apple is going to replace my hd on warranty, it's more than 2 years old.
My mbp has served well and i'm waiting for the arrendale 15 mbp's, when they arrive i'll order one and will swap the harddisk for a ssd. Then i can put the hd in my santa rosa mbp.
But if you think i can try asking apple for a replacement harddisk, i will try..

  • My 17" MacBook Pro cannot detect express card after the OS Mavericks update

Hi all, after I installed the update yesterday, I find out that my MacBook Pro no longer detects the PCI express card which I was able to use in OS Mountain lion, and I can't see it in both disk utility and recovery mode.  Any suggestions?  Thank you for reading this.

    Seperde,
please review all of your installed third-party software to ensure that they’re compatible with Mavericks.

  • MacBook Pro won't connect wirelessly after 10.5.8 update

I have a MacBook Pro laptop, which was acquired in 2006. I have used it with my Linksys WRT54G router successfully for years but since I recently updated to 10.5.8, it was able to connect one time, which lasted for a day or so. Now it no longer can connect.
I am using Automatic DHCP with my wireless router's WPA Personal 2 with password security and yet it appears that Airport gets stuck because it assigns itself a IP number and of course, that appears to be the wrong number. I have tried to go and use manual settings, copying the settings from my iPod Touch and iPad. Ironically, when I tried that, the MBP attempt seemed to "kick' the two other devices off the network and I had to physically shut down the MBP completely and then reset the iPad a few times in order for it to reconnect again. The iPod Touch only had to be shut down and restarted and it was back in business.
Any ideas? One question: Can I set my network settings manually or do I have to use Automatic DHCP? Oh yeah, I have tried the tips that William Boyd provided in the thread +"MacBook connects, but MacBookPro won't"+ as seen here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
    Tried them all. Nothing helped.

I went into my MBP Network settings for Airport and instead of using DHCP, I clicked on Advanced and entered the data for my server, router and DNS manually. I also used an IP number provided by my Linksys router but I adjusted the last three digits so they would not conflict with the last three digits of my iPad and iPod Touch. Once I got all those elements in manually, I was able to connect with all three of my devices at one time with no conflicts.
What used to be automatic is no more. I have to do it manually. For all three devices...

  • Macbook pro (late 2013) running hot after 10.10.3 update

I upgraded to 10.10.3 and my macbook pro is now running ver hot.
    activity monitor says launched (1) = CPU 100 %

I'm having the same problem as well. The SMC Reset did not fix my problem. I've pasted the post that I put on macrumors below. ( http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1870709 )
So I update my MBP two days ago. With in those two days I have noticed that when waking up from sleep mode or opening the lid that with in 5 minutes the underside is really warm while doing simple task like browsing safari or checking email. The only programs running are mail and safari.
    More Specifically:
Temperature Gauge (App) Reads GPU 1 Diode around 98 degrees celsius
Activity Monitor shows that a process called "discoveryd" is using close to a 100% of the CPU
A restart of the computer shows "discoveryd" using 0.2% of CPU and the temperature of the GPU 1 Diode immediately starts to cool down to a pretty consistent 52 degrees celsius.
All of the problems above can be replicated and solved by a restart but reoccur when the lid is closed.
Anyone else suffering anything similar or know of a solution to the problem?
Thanks for your help in advance!

  • Help! Macbook Pro won't recognize display after 10.5.7 update!

I installed the 10.5.7 Combo update today and got caught in the blue screen restarting loop that everyone else was talking about. After about 15 minutes, I decided to do a cold restart of the computer. The computer boots up but the display will not turn on.
I've screen-shared into the computer and can see that the computer doesn't recognize any display whatsoever. I've done all the usuals — resetting PR RAM, SMC resets, reinstalling 10.5.7 remotely, etc. Nothing works.
Anyone have any help they could offer? Thanks a lot.

Sure wish you could delete a post on these forums after you've played a joke.

I have an early 2008 macbook pro that is running slow after upgrading to lion. Is there anything I can do? this is what I have,Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • MacBook Pro drops Wi-Fi connection after upgrading to 10.6.5. Fixed!

MacBook Pro drops Wi-Fi connection after upgrading to 10.6.5. Airport says no IP is detected then suddenly reconnects?
This has been a problem I’ve been troubleshooting for the last month. I’m new to the Mac family and have loved my experience up until this point. I was under the impression that mac’s are supposed to be so user friendly that even your grandmother could use one with out having any technical knowledge. I mean I shouldn’t have to be deleting drivers or reformat my mac because of an OS update glitch? (That’s what the guy at the Genius Bar told me to do.) What I refused to succumb to was that I’m really good with computers. I get at least a phone call every other week from someone asking me for tech support. So I’d like to think that nothing I’ve done to the system would have caused this anomaly.
After numerous attempts of troubleshooting and researching forms I believe I’ve discovered a solutions that seems to be working for me.
Here are the steps I took to create a consistent connection to my Wi-Fi. I believe it was a combination of all these steps to create success.
1.) Changed my router to use G Wireless Only. (I’m assuming this removed any unnecessary frequencies to allow G to broadcast stronger?)
2.) Did a scan on the other networks in my area to find out what channel everyone else was broadcasting on. Copy and past the text below into a terminal window.
    sudo ln -s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/airport /usr/sbin/airport
This will allow you to simply type “airport” in the terminal window to execute the command.
    Type airport –s
This will display all the networks in your area and what channel they are broadcasting on.
3.) Changed my router to use a channel that no one in my area was using. (This helped to make my network stronger and free of interference.)
The last steps will help your home network improve but these next steps I believe helped fix any install errors caused maybe by the 10.6.5 update on my mac.
4.) Boot your Mac into safe mode by holding down the shift key while booting.
5.) Open System Preferences and Click on Network.
6.) Click the drop down menu from Locations at the top of the screen. Click edit locations..
7.) Create a new location by clicking the + and give it a new name.
8.) Delete the old location by clicking on the old locations name and click the – to remove.
    9.) Reboot
10.) Open System Preference and click on Network.
11.) Click on the settings sprocket next to the + and – and click on Set Service Order…
12.) Drag Airport to the top of the list of devices then click Ok.
Now this last step is what seemed to eliminate the issue. I hardcoded my IP address to my network. This way my computer will always use the same IP and not have to search.
13.) Click on Advanced under Network.
14.) Click on TCP/IP. Click on the drop down for Configure IPv4 and change it to Manually.
15.) Fill out the fields with your IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.1xx (x=whatever number) Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router: 192.168.1.1 (All of these settings are pretty standard for most home networks.)
16.) Click on the drop down for Configure IPv6 and change it to Off.
17.) Next click on the DNS tab at the top.
18.) Click the + to add a DNS Record.
To find your DNS Server open a Terminal window by launching Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal
    Then Type cat /etc/resolv.conf
(There is a space between cat and /. Without it you’ll get no such file or directory.)
This should return two addresses. Your ISP’s DNS Servers.
19.) Add both records to the DNS and click Ok.
20.) Click Ok then under Network Click Ok.
    21.) Reboot router then Mac
    22.) Fixed my connection issue
The symptoms I experienced eluded me to believe that something with the DHCP is going into an idle then disconnecting. Before when DHCP was set to automatically assign the network signal would time out then searchers for a new IP resulting in Airport displaying No IP is detected. By setting my IP to a fixed address I still notice a slight drop in bandwidth at moments but because of the assigned IP I never loose connection. I can now stream video, play games, chat all without getting disconnected.
I believe this fix will work for my home network but I also noticed this issue at work so for each location that I connect for the time being I’ll create each there own location and hardcode the IP address to that network. I’ve been reading that 10.6.6 is coming soon so maybe this will be resolved for good in the next update.
Let me know if this helps or if you have any questions.
    Best of luck.

I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
Did you ever find anything more to this?

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
