17" MBP C2D

how many ppl actually received one? I called apple today and they told me another 10-12 days (London). So who owns one already? Pics and experience?

I got mine yesterday (ordered Oct 24th), and so far I'm really happy.
I don't have my main apps set-up yet (FCP, Motion, After Effects, etc.) but it seems pretty fast. Office loads in a flash and that isn't even a universal app.
Knock on wood... the screen seems fine, and the compter is pretty much silent (except when the DVD drive is running).
Last night we plugged it in (optically) into our surround sound stereo and using "front-row" we sat on the couch watching old photos. That was really cool as we could look at this stuff comforably and not only in "the computer room".
So far I think that it was definitely worth the wait & stress... a great computer

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

  • MBP C2D 15" display blacks out!

My week old MBP C2D 15" blacks out on me. I find that it happens when applying light pressure on the back side, at a surface square underneath F1 - F5 - F - Caps Lock. Light pressure makes it flicker, a little harder results in complete black out. Obviously a production fault and I will of course take it in when I have time... this is my work tool so no way I can just leave it in for days. But that is another issue. Maybe someone else experience the same black out? My build is 8N1037

    Hello
Did you find out the reason? The same message shows up in the system.log of my iMac Core Duo after the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update, but the iMac works fine.
Cleaning all caches, repair user rights, PRAM and SMC Reset didnt help. Also no luck with Preferential Treatment tool to check for corrupted preference files, it didnt find corrupted plist files.

  • Help! I Can't Boot from Firewire Drive (Previous MBP C2D Hard Drive)

Can a hardrive from a C2D Macbook Pro start an i7 Quad MBP?
I just sold my 2008 15" 2.4ghz C2D MBP, (that had 10.6.5 installed), and today bought the newest
    17" 2.2ghz i7 Quad Core MBP, (that has 10.6.6 pre-installed.)
I installed a fresh HD on the 15" before selling it, and kept its HD, and put it into a FW800 enclosure.
+(note: The 15" Macbook Pro I just sold, booted fine from this HD in the FW800 enclosure.)+
Before migrating my data, from the FW800 drive, I figured I would upgrade the old OS to 10.6.6, so it would be a seamless migration.
While up and running on the brand new i7, I could see the FW800 drive with 10.6.5 as a Startup Disk option in System Preferences.
I rebooted holding down the option key, selected the FW drive, and pressed the arrow below to continue startup.
The grey screen with the apple came up immediately, but I was horrified that the spinning gear never did appear, and startup froze at that point. I left it like this for five minutes. Grey screen with apple. Frozen.
So, I held down the power key, shut it down, then restarted holding down Command-S to run Disk Utility in SIngle User Mode, (/sbin/fsck -fy). Disk was okay.
I rebooted into the new internal, installed Diskwarrior 4.3, and checked the FW800, and it had no errors.
I opened Startup Disk in System Preferences, and chose the FW800 drive as the Startup Disk, and rebooted. Same result. Grey screen with apple, and no further...
Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?
Should I be able to boot this new MBP i7 with the HD from my old MBP C2D?
Is there something incompatible between the old C2D and i7?
    Thanks in advance!

That CD2 OS will not boot into a new computer's OS.
    Hi, thanks for replying.
I knew that the switch to Intel from ppc, meant a ppc drive, partitioned with APM could not boot an intel machine with a GUID partition table.
    Do you know:
    1. for certain that a C2D HD cannot boot an i7 machine?
    2. and why?
    Ho Lee MACkeral wrote:
Why not use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder?
I am planning on doing this.
    My old drive was 10.6.5.
The new machine has 10.6.6 pre-installed.
I figured that if I was able to upgrade the old drive to the same OSX first, it would provide a more seamless migration.
I was also concerned that my applications on 10.6.5 might become broken if they were migrated to 10.6.6. I really do not want to have to install everything.

  • MBP CD w/256Mb video or MBP C2D w/128Mb video?

    Hi.
Its a shame i am writing my first post in a PC machine..but the reason is im going to buy a MBP very soon.
Im going to use the machine for Architecture software (AUTOCAD 2D n 3D running on windows), Adobe creative suite CS2, etc...
The question is: should I buy a MBP CD w/256Mb Video or MBP C2D w/256Mb? both have 2.16GHz and 1Gb RAM.
Im going to buy it from the refurbished section and both are very close in the price. U$S1599 for the MBP C2D w/128mb video and U$S1499 for the MBP CD w/256mb video.
Could someone give me a hand with this decission? thanks a lot.
    buying my first MAC

If you are going to use the current version, 2007, of AutoCAD you might want to check the the system requirements. The difference with this version is that it does make use of the GPU although I'm not usre how much a difference VRAM will make.
Regarding your choice though, I'd probably go with the Core 2 Duo model. It runs cooler, has 802.11n capable hardware and is capable of 3GB RAM which will be important for apllications like Adobe Photoshop. Be aware that the 2.16GHz C2D model has "only" 128MB VRAM.

  • Temperature-related startup failure in MBP C2D

My MBP C2D fails at startup when rebooting after normal use (means web surfing and playing music with iTunes) and temperatures in my MBP's CPU cores have been ~50C or more by Temperature Monitor.
At startup DVD-drive makes it's normal eject sound, but then nothing, screen stays black. There is no startup sound or gray screen. I need to shutdown computer, let it cool down and after that it will start again.
Hardware test doesn't find anything and reseting PMU, PRAM or SMC doesn't help.
Problem seems to be temperature-related. Solutions?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry for posting a not-so-helpful reply, but I think perhaps there is something wrong with the temperature sensor(s). The processor should shutdown only when the upper temperature threshold is exceeded. I suppose the hardware test cannot be run when the machine is still "hot"? I would call AppleCare...

  • MBP C2D unable to boot on external OSX 10.4.8

I have a Mac mini CD and a external HDD, both are installed with OSX 10.4.8. My Mac mini can boot on both OSX. However the MBP C2D is unable to boot on both (mac mini CD in target disk mode, and ext. HDD), it can only boot on the built-in OSX. When I tried to boot that two OSX, first it loads for a while and then freeze at a white screen. Sometimes the white screen may even blink vigorously.
I even had made a disk image of the OSX on the ext. HDD and restored it on my MBP C2D's internal HDD. The same freeze still happened.
Now it seems that the MBP C2D is not compatible for OSX other than its origanal one.
Can anyone confirm the existence of the problem?

It is really bad. Does the Apple support line help? The support line in my region is not that "pro".
For the issue, I had never experience something like that on a Mac, neither MBP CD nor Mac mini CD, they can boot from each other's OSX or OSX on ext. HDDs.
I am really surprised by this problem on MBP C2D. I think it should be software issue and every one using MBP C2D should have the issue, right?

  • Trying To Re-Install OS X on MBP C2D 2.4-17"

    I'm using a MBP 2.16-15" Core 2 Duo with 3Gb Ram, OS X 10.4.10
I am trying to re-install OS X on my friends MBP C2D 2.4-17"  OS X 10.4.10 using MY Install DVD's as he forgot  his! (My DVD OS V 10.4.8, AHT V 3A116, Disc V 1.0)
His MBP keeps coming up with the dreaded grey crash screen and black box telling me in English and other lang's to hold down the power key and re-start, after i try to boot from my dvd.
Do i need to use His dvd's? are mine not compatible? or do i need to re-format his drive and re-install?
    Any ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks

You cannot use your installer discs for his computer. Aside from the fact they are not the same, it's illegal.

  • Unprompted user switching MBP C2D 2.33 10.5.8

My MBP C2D 2.33 running 10.5.8 has recently developed the following problem: The desktop suddenly "swivels" to the Login Window without having been prompted to do so. It does not log me out, it just switches to the Login Window. When I log back in I can see all of the windows still open with the work in progress, but the computer switches back to the Login Window within a second or two.
Restarting means losing the unsaved work in progress, but allows me to log back in and continue working. The problem has occurred 3 times over the past 3 days, twice while doing nothing more complicated than composing a message in Mail.
This problem is a bit annoying while I'm working at home, but my work involves a lot of presentations for groups from 12-200 people and I can't afford to have this happen under those circumstances. I've used Disc Utility to repair the permissions database but am looking for another more specific diagnosis and fix if possible. I can do an archive and install of Leopard if necessary but am not looking forward to it.

Just happened again, this time with Mail not even open. Acting suspiciously like a parental controls issue, even though this is happening on the Admin account rather than one of the kids' accounts. I'll try turning parental controls off altogether to see if it helps.

Apple airport extreme base station 5.7 and airport express 6.3, WPA2 personal, randomly drop connections and fluctuate signal strength (15-5 bars).
My first mbp c2d which I shipped back and a new replacement mbp c2d (pure apple software out of the box osX 10.4.8 + 2006-007 patch, no 3rd party, no data transfered from an old pbG4) randomly drop connections (can easily re-establish, thou) and the signal strength fluctuates between 15 and 5 bars, which cuts the average download speed by 50% (e.g. 4Mbit/s)compared with an old pbG4 which (on the same network) never drops connections and is on average faster (10 Mbit/s ) when close (~3 yards) to AEBS or AE.
In a larger distance (~45 feet) from AEBS the mbp c2d has better signal and download speed than pbG4.

  • Has anyone received MBP C2D 17"?

Has anyone received or at least seen MBP C2D 17"? I called apple store in London and they told me that there is another delay and I should try it in 7 days. Does anyone know what is going on?

    How else
would you explain that 15" is here for awhile while
17" is not. Not even for a display purposes.
    Something is suspicious here :))
it doesn't seem that strange to me. retooling an assembly line to produce a few hundred models for display purposes which are almost identical (save for the chip) to the previous line doesn't make sense. it's all about money. there is probably more money to be made right now making macbooks and 15 inch macbook pros. they've cranked out some 17s now so that means they've either got a new assembly plant on line or at least have converted some of the lines from a plant formerly making 15s over to the 17s...these kinds of operations changes take a while to make and require considerable planning and commitment to a decision in order for them to make sense, money-wise. anyway, that's my take on it...

  • What type of wireless router w/new MBP C2D??

I have a new 17" C2D MBP on order and I would like to sort out my wireless home network before it arrives...
As I am new to the wireless world, I do not understand what wireless router would work for this new MBP. I have read about it having 802.11g technology, but I have also seen something about N technology... my local computer shop says that they don't have N technology yet, but will soon.
What is this all about? Is 802.11g G technology? What do I get to have wireless internet access with my new MBP at home?

If you have the MBP C2D and you would like to get a wireless router. I suggest that you get a 802.11n router, as it works for both 802.11b, 802.11g as well as 802.11n. It is common knowledge by now that the wireless card that is used in the MBP with the C2D is an Atheros AR5008 802.11n. Though it is recognized as an 802.11g in the current OSX 10.4, this wireless card has the possibility of being used at its native state of 802.11n. What does this mean to you? Well, the 802.11n is ~ 650% faster than 802.11g and has about 5X the range of it as well. Though 10.4 does not recognize the card as such, windows vista will (that is if you plan on installing it onto the system) and OSX 10.5 might (I don't if Apple, will support draft N [802.11n] of the new wireless standard, even though they put a wireless card in the system that is a Draft N card). So get a wireless router that uses 802.11n. It'll save you money in the future.
Ok, now I'm done explaining why you should get the 802.11n router. Now, as for those who might say otherwise. If you think the 802.11n draft standard is going to change much from now, until the standard is finalized, then you may or may not be right. But from what my professor explained to me about how the technology works, it probably won't change that much. If I were to explain it to anyone on this board about how the standard works, it would be a hopeless matter unless you have taken classes in state variables or control systems. But I guess there are more than enough resources online to find out about how the Draft N standard works. And that is my 2 cents.

  • FWIW...Solved my Airport reception problem on MBP C2D

After 2 hours with AppleCare it turns out I had to many computers on my airport network (7) which slowed down my benchmark internet times on my MBP C2D at speakeasy. It seems an old G3 iMac may be the main culprit. When I turn off its airport my MBP speed goes up 3-4X.
    BobM

Nikolaus... I might agree with that except the MBP is the only machine affected. My G4, 1yr old ibook, 2 yr old iMac, and another older G4 are not having any problems. When I turn off the G3 only the MBP C2D improves alot.

  • Use TIger from MBP c2D or imac 800mhz?

I have a MBP C2D with TIger installed and will install Leopard once released. Can I then install the Tiger OS on my imac 17" (It meets the install requirements) currently running 10.3.9 Panther?
Does the Tiger disk that came with the MBP come with a PPC and intel OS X install software?
    Thanks in advance

No, the versions of Tiger that come with any Mac are specific to that Mac and should not be used on any other model.

  • Anybody gonna cancel order for 17"MBP C2D if shipping gets delayed again?

Just wondering if anybody else will want to cancel their order if our "updated" shipping date estimate is pushed back again. This is my first Apple (not including my ipod) and it has been a bad experience so far. I was looking forward to my new mac world but right now my trusty PC is looking better and better. If the delay was for something other than supply issues I might not want to get on this sinking ship.

I feel your pain...I ordered the new MBP C2D then cancelled the order, because I wanted to wait for some more feedback. I had ordered a custom configuration and when I called Apple to hold the shipment until I was got back to them they said that normally they won't do that and with it being a custom config it was not returnable. If i cancelled before shipment I would be able to in essence get a refund but in that case I wasn't even being billed for it since they don't charge the credit card until it is shipped. this all happened last night (sunday). I was made aware that if it were shipped anyway because it had already been built I could still return it for a refund since I had made the decision and it is on file with Apple before fedex got their hands on it.
fast forward to this morning.....Fedex got it before Apple pulled it from the loading dock......in the end, I don't really mind the situation. I will just drop it back at fedex. apple didn't pressure me into keeping it and even helped me expedite the return. I also don't need a replacement computer, so I am not in a bind.
Also, I guess, it i needed a new 'puter I would be ****** off with the delay....on the other hand, I would anticipate any delays or problems if I needed a new one.
good luck and hang in there....you won't be disappointed (i hope)
