17 MBP curious question...

QUICK QUESTION TO THOSE WITH 17 MBPs...
Could you tell me how is your screen??? Is it stiff or loose a bit, could you please rotate the opened MBP towards you and see if the screen stays in place or moves towards you to close.
Thank you
B

Hello...I did the test that you asked and my MBP 17" screen stays at the angle I open it up to, however when I tilt the mbp towards me the screen does move a little. My screen is "loose(r)" than the 15" MBP I had. I asked the genius at the store and he said that it is typical of 17" screens to be a little looser. I don't know if he was just telling me that or what. My screen is only "loose" feeling until it gets almost shut and then it feels as "tight" as the 15" does. I hope this helps! I love the 17" and as long as the screen stays open and at the angle I put it at on a flat surface...it really doesn't bother me as to how loose it is. Thanks.

  • Old External to New MBP cable question (Time sensitive)

I have a new MBP (purchased late january 2011). New external drives all connected properly and working. However, I need to access some old files for tax purposes (and that is why this is a time sensitive question.) These files were kept on a 60GB, small, portable drive: SmartDisk FireLite Model #FWFL60-N. This drive connected to my old MBP with a 4-pin firewire cable (wire has IEEE 1394 printed on it.) Obviously that cable is outdated for my new MBP. Question: Is there some type of wire (or conversion adaptor) I can purchase that will allow me to connect this old drive to the new computer? I never thought I'd need those old files -- but tax season has me scrambling for help or advice. Thanks!

You need a 9-pin to 4-pin cable or adapter. For example this one from Macsales.

Similar are available from Amazon and other places. • Curious Question - MBP vs PM 2.5Dual

Using a PM 2.5dual and Mac Book pro 2.16Ghz with Logic pro 7 - will there be huge difference in performance between these two models?

Hi there. First post on here. Got my MBP a couple of weeks ago and it is a lot hotter than my PBs. Like the other guy said, it isnt quite as hot as the one you have just now, but it is still pretty **** hot... Installed SMc Fan control as suggested by others on here but see how it goes. My MBP can run as hot as like 90 degrees sometimes, even like 75 when just surfing the web. Gonna get an I-Rain I-Lap stad. Hope this helps some

  • Replacement MBP; resolution questions

My previous MBP (17" 2010-ish model) died a week or so back and I'm now in the process of looking into a replacement. I do have some questions I'd like someone to help me out on, all mostly resolution related.
So the first few are related to old software:
I have Photoshop/Premiere Pro CS5.5, which Adobe seems to have given me the finger over in regards to resolution compatability because it's not CS6 or above. Without having seen a Retina Display MBP running any CS5 software (and I'm unlikely ever to at this point) I'm unaware of how atrocious it supposidly looks running on such a machine. How bad/acceptable does it look on a Retina Display MBP? Slightly fuzzy or downright horrid?
Are there any third party plugins or software to bring it Retina support? Same questions applied to Office 2011 and stuff like Google Chrome. How a Retina Display MBP treats my old software is the biggest deal breaker as to whether I simply buy a Retina Display or pre-Retina Display model. I'm not interested in upgrading to CS6 simply because Adobe clearly hates their older customers.
    Hardware:
IF the answers to the above are "no" or "you'll have to upgrade your software" and I went ahead and acquired an older Macbook Pro, for this example a 2011-12 15" (even refurbished) model at a 1680x1050 resolution, how does this affect output to an external screen?
Can the external screen display a 1920x1080/20 resolution on a system without a native 1920x1020 resolution like the 17" model did? Using the example machine's native resolution when using it by itself is not a problem for me, but not being able to get the desired external resolution when it's connected to another screen is.
I'd very much appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I don't want to pay a ton of money for something that doesn't apply to the above.

Your replacement came out of a warehouse not off the assembly line.

  • Quick Question - just a curious question really...

I got a new iMac last month and had previously owned an iMac G5 and had been using the Mail feature - having my comcast e-mail transfered to it. When I opened up mail on my new computer - all I did was type in my e-mail address and password, and everything set up automatically - I remember having to do a little more work than that in the past - not much, but changing a few settings so that I can bring up my e-mail with this application.
I'm curious as to how all of my contacts are still in the previous recipients - people I e-mailed a year ago - are still in there - It was if I never changed computers - I thought this would be computer specific and that when I deleted my hard drive on the other computer that these would all be gone and i'd have to start from scratch - I'm happy I didn't - but I guess this is the way it was supposed to happen?
so, not really a question - but I guess this is the way it works? I didn't import my old mail or anything...

No, it is not a .mac account.
Thanks for the info...I just found it strange how I could start on a new computer as if I never switched - I thought that stuff was stored on the hard drive - sort of. So, to me, that meant that I would lose all of that information once I started fresh on a new system. How does the mail application save this information? just by my logging in? is this why set-up was so easy? My address book does not have even half of those addresses in it - I do no that they are integrated though. I backed up my address book and was able to easily restore it with my new computer...so those addresses I expected to see - just not ones that I used while using the other computer only.
If that makes any sense - it's hard to explain.
    Thanks again.

  • Curious question about tab key selecting?

I'm not sure how to word this query so try to bare with me.
I sometimes use the tab key to select the next file or folder instead of the arrow keys, but I've noticed that when I have a series of folders and/or files that are in numerical order, the tab key doesn't select the files and folders in the order that they are listed it selects them in a order that is similar to alphabetical order.
    Such as this:
This is an example of the file names and the numerical order they're listed in:
    9
    28
    29
    30
    40
    300
    2006
    2025
    A
This is the order the tab selects the same files:
    2006
    2025
    28
    29
    30
    300
    40
    9
    A
If the 9 file is selected then I hit tab key to select the next file, the next files selected is A it will skip over the other files. The arrow Keys don't do this.
My question is why is this the case?
Not really a big deal but I was curious why it does that.

You are correct for the use you've described - using tab in list view, also in icon view. The tab key moves in alpha-numeric sequence but the numeric is by 1st numeral, 2nd numeral, etc if two or more have the same first numeral not by total number size.
The arrow keys are essentially directional. In icon view you use L/R to move to the next item and up/down to move vertically.
This is the standard use but individual applications use these keys differently. In a table/database it's common for the tab to move from cell to cell and the arrow keys to move through the characters in a cell but even these can depend on the particular software package.
This is all part of the learning curve for computer users!

  • Curious question about sleep light.

Currently loving my new 2011 17" MBP, it's been completely great, no problems at all.
I'm just curious about one little thing. My sleep light, seems a little dimmer on the right half. Looking at it at different angles seems to make it look "full". I was just wondering if this is the normal?
Like I said, I love the computer, and I don't plan on returning it because of this, I'm simply curious if this is what it's supposed to look like.
I'm thinking perhaps there's some dust or something in there affecting how it looks at certain angles.

I just got the new 15' mbp myself an have had no problems.
Except the issue you have. Although mine seems like its lost lighting on left side. Its very very minor but I can tell, which bothers me becuase I'v paid $2000 for it brand new for a reason (to look brand new).
Have you had problems with it since than?
An also wondering if you could would you exchange it for a brand new one because I do have 14 days to take back?

  • New Owner T61 Think Pad w/ curious question

I have never owned a laptop. I have used desktops for over 20 years.
This is very new for me. Question is within the port that you input the battery.
    Curious ??
There is enclosed card inside the battery port that has a pull tab "tape" with arrows which extends where the card is loaded within the laptop.
    What is this?
Is the tape to be removed or left in place.
I have not touched it.  Thank You.

You mean under the "pins" in battery slot ? this is propably sim card reader (if you have a GSM/EDGE or any other WAN module inserted) this tape is for makeing you easier to eject the sim card ..

  • MBP C2D questions on upgrade

just curious if anyone thinks if there is a big enough difference btwn MBP and the new C2D that would warrant an upgrade.
I am thinking about upgrading and handing down the MBP to my son who has been buggin the heck outta me to give it to him.

    1. That 39% performance improvement.
If you look at it, clock for clock, the speed should
    only improve about 8% (2.33/2.16 = 1.08)...4MB cache,
improved pipeline etc. is adding a lot of
performance...can't wait to see the SSE benchmarks.
Right, and even 39% improvement won't be noticeable for MOST people. Keep in mind that they are comparing a 2.16 with 2GB Ram versus 2.33 with 3GB ram.
    2. FW800
Yes, it should have been there from the start but now
I can access my external storage at full speed
I totally agree with you on this one.
On top of that, I get 20GB more HDD, Dual Layer
    Burning,
I bought my external Sony DVDRW DL for $120 last year, and it's still faster and better then any internal. I think the Superdrive update is not noteworthy. 20GB more is great, but consider that external drives are about $.48/1GB... again a nice to have more memory, but really, it would be more cost effective to buy an external drive at 7200rpm
plus I get rid of CPU
    whine
Speculation. There's no confirmation of that. For your sake, I sure hope so
Hopefully the thermal design is a little improved so
the machine runs slightly cooler on average.
The machine will run the same, if not hotter. Increase performance and you increase heat. It's a Portable, not a laptop. I think most companies have moved away from that term all together.
The downside is I've owned a MBP for only 3 months
and to 'trade-up' will cost me $1,000 (assuming a
re-sale value of my current machine of around $1.5k??)
Re sale of 1.5K? I think you'd be lucky to get $1200 for a used machine. Unless you know someone personally that will buy that from you, I think you may be overestimating. I don't think the benefit for you is worth your $1000. Your 3 month old computer will not be obsolete any time within the next 3 years so I would upgrade to something more significant... maybe something with a blue ray player, OSX 10.5 (since you will need it for 64 bit), and a licorice dispenser.

  • MBP C2D Question

I am about to make the leap from Windows to Mac -- and I am very excited about it. I spend half my day reading through the forums and trying to decide what I am going to get.
    My question is this...
I want to go with a 15" MBP with the C2D processor.
I would like to do some entry level video editing, etc. Nothing too 'professional'.
I am torn between the 2.16 and the 2.33 models.
$500 is a big difference, and I am trying to determine if the 2.33 is worth it.
If I were to go with the 2.16 I would upgrade to 2 gigs of ram...the only thing I am worried about is the video card (with only 128mb of ram vs 256 on the 2.33).
Is it worth the extra money to get the 2.33, or should I just get the 2.16 and upgrade the memory...
Thanks in advnace for all the help!!
I can't wait!! No more blue screens of death from MS!

    Hi Steven,
This weekend I used iMovie to import and edit archived VHS footage for an upcoming conference presentation. The 2.16 C2D MBP was very responsive while editing 30 minute tapes at 640x wide resolution. I did not apply anything more exciting than a fade here or and audio patch there, but if this seems comparable to your needs, you are likely to be pleased.
If you are intending to drive a second display, you may want to consult others about their experience with the 256MB video card versus the 128MB. As it was, editing on the native screen was fine.
Note: I installed an extra GB of RAM (2GB total) before getting to work on the project. I can't say how it would perform with the stock 1GB.
    Best regards.

  • MobileMe Gallery Widgets - 3 Curious Questions

Have created and published an iWeb site which basically consists of one page, onto which I’ve positioned six MobileMe Gallery widgets. In the window for each of those widgets I’ve selected a particular MobileMe Gallery published from Aperture, each of which already has one particular image designated as its Key Photo.
So now what’s left -- and what I’ve searched extensively but still can’t figure out -- is:
    1) How do I turn OFF the automatic “slideshow preview” going on inside each of those six Gallery Widgets, and make it so they each display only the Key Photo for that Gallery (at least until the user mouses over a particular widget, activating the scrub/scan feature to manually preview all the images contained in that Gallery)?
    2) How do I set each widget window to “fit” all the preview thumbs inside its dimensions, rather than arbitrarily hacking off the tops and bottoms of all the vertically-oriented images, which for many shots just looks arbitrary, amateurish, and really ugly?
    3) What is the current status of that ridiculous bug which didn’t allow the Gallery Widget to display a Gallery which had been published using the “Hide album on my Gallery home page” option? I do ultimately need to have that option checked, but have left it unchecked for now just to make sure the iWeb site containing the widgets would actually publish.
So -- have the iWeb people and the MobileMe people FINALLY got this bug fixed, or do I still need to hold off activating that “Hide album...” option, and just let my professional Galleries be all mixed together with my personal ones? (Which again just looks arbitrary and amateurish, and encourages one to check out third-party solutions -- at least until such time as the different programming groups at Apple decide to actually talk to each other, and make programs which can interact in truly fluid, intuitive, and meaningful ways.)
My 2¢ -- on top of 3 questions. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

#1 - are you referring to the "skimming" of photos as you move the cursor over the gallery? That's javascript controlled I believe and would require knowledge of javascript and widgets. You might ask Cyclosaurer as he's the resident expert on javascript and widgets.
No, no, no -- I'm fine with the skimming, in fact I like that feature. I'm talking about the fact that EACH of the six different MobileMe Gallery widgets, from the moment I dragged each one onto the iWeb page I was creating and selected which already-published Gallery it should link to, began showing each of the different images contained in that Gallery/Album, changing to the next one every second or two. This happened completely on its own, I did not (at least not intentionally) select or activate anything, and it happens in ALL the widget windows, even though the mouse is not skimming over ANY of them.
It continues (again, in every widget window, and completely on its own) when I save the page, it continues when I publish the page, it continues when I visit the page online. The only thing which does stop it -- temporarily -- is when I do mouse over a particular widget window and manually skim. But the moment I stop skimming, this "automatic slideshow preview" (I don't know what else to call it) kicks back in.
Is this normal? Or is this some weird aberration peculiar to my system?
The added annoyance is that when you click on one of the widgets, instead of going to that Gallery in its full album view, it goes to a single frame view of whichever image happened to be being displayed at the time you clicked, requiring the user to then click on the "Back to Album" button in the upper left to get their bearings. Which again makes me wonder -- is this normal?
#2 - Again, you're referring to the skimming, right? Since it's a square shape the photos would have to be square to be able to be scaled exactly. Since it's only a "skim" of what's inside being perfectly scaled isn't that necessary.
It certainly wouldn't be as annoying if I could switch off this "automatic slideshow preview" behaviour as described above. (Though even for the skim function, I still think it would make sense to have the option to have the images auto scale to fit completely within the widget window -- which is not square, by the way -- or at least on my system appears to only be sizeable as a horizontal rectangle, to a maximum size of 320x260 pixels. This orientation works fine for previewing horizontally-oriented images, but looks butt-ugly when completely decapitating various groups of people in vertically-aligned shots, of which I happen to have many.)
In any case, if an auto-scale option to fit all image preview thumbs within the widget window (even for mere skimming) is something I need to add to my Feature Request list, that's fine. It's this bizarre, completely on its own "automatic slideshow preview" behaviour I'm still trying to understand.
#3 - it still exists. If you don't want it to be displayed in your overall MMe gallery with the rest of the individual galleries Apple isn't letting it be published alone.
Just to make sure we're talking about the same bug, in an ideal world I DON'T want these particular Gallery/Albums to be displayed as part of my overall MMe Gallery page, but I DO want them to be the designated content of the MMe Gallery WIDGETS which I'm including on the specific iWeb page in question. And if this bug still has not been fixed, then it appears I and many others are still S.O.L. for what should be a simple and obvious bit of formatting.
Send your 2¢ worth to apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html. We're just users like yourself and can't do anything about it.
Rest assured I will. What's one more page after the hundreds I've already sent them?
I'm just a bit stunned that this particular bug hasn't been dealt with already. And it only reinforces my firm belief (see the thread at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1996786&tstart=0)
that Apple desperately needs an Inter-App Czar, someone with the carte-blanche power to literally FORCE different programming teams to make all Apple apps not only play nicely together, but to play intelligently and intuitively and creatively together!

  • MBP i7 question

Got this MBP around 4 weeks ago. Everything is fantastic, but I saw that my cores were not being fully used when needed.
Firstly I was running Final Cut 7 and exporting a movie. I looked at my activity monitor and only cores 1 & 3 were being used (80-90% ish), but 2&4 were just doing nothing. They were obviously doing something but must of been jumping around 10-20%. (CPU Temp around 85)
I then started doing an export in quicktime and all 4 cores were maxed out. The difference that I saw in the activity monitor was Finalcut being the process, which was using the CPU (around 150-160%). But when using quicktime, (fully maxed out like it should be) it was using the Core media authoring session helper as the process.
Is this correct then, because Im also running final cut (same version) on my imac which maxes out when exporting on its quad-cores (I know its different but same software).
The same thing happens when idle too but on a smaller scale.
Any explanation would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your Energy saver I think controls how many cores are used for processes. But rememeber, these may just be differences in how the processors are designed for various machines. An i7 in a notebook may not have the cooling than an iMac has and they have optimize it better.

  • New MBP Video Question

I am on the verge of purchasing the new MBP... the decision lies in the graphics... anyone know how much better the 512MB 9600GT is as compared to the 256MB?... I realize jumping up would end up with the better 2.53 Processor... but I am unsure if whether the processor jump of 1.53 as well as the 512MB graphics is worth the jump of $273.12 (tax included)... what's everyone else's take on this?... I do plan on doing some gaming on this Mac, nothing too major since I have a desktop for gaming, but unsure as to whether the difference in cost is worth it... everything else as of yet is planned and looks like it will be 4GB of RAM with the 320GB HD... this is my final decision that needs to be made... please chime in... • MBP Upgrade questions

Im looking to upgrade my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro but I'm a complete noob when it comes to specifics. Any answers you guys can provide to the following would be greatly appreciated!
I have a 500GB 5400 HDD. I want to Upgrade to at least a 750GB, possibly a 1TB. Would a 7200 RPM 750 be more beneficial than a 1 TB 5400? I want to dual-boot so the added space would be nice but I also do moderate heavy load stuff like gaming. What do you recommend? And which HDD should I purchase as far as brand/measurements and all that. I see laptop HDD on new egg but im not sure whats compatible with my laptop.
I also want to upgrade the RAM from 4 to 8GB. I have 1066 right now..will my mid-2010 support 1333 or should i stick with the speed it was shipped with? Same question as above regarding which to buy as well. Thanks in advance for the help!

    Would a 7200 RPM 750 be more beneficial than a 1 TB 5400?
Not by much. The larger capacities don't have to be as fast because the tracks are thinner.
On the other hand the lower capacities have been around longer, thus are more rigorously tested for longevity. It still won't substitute the need for a backup plan*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Stick with the speed it shipped with, and remain within specs*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
Using anything out of spec, can lead to more kernel panics, and a greater likelihood of running into bad RAM.
