17'' MBP Discoloration Near Trackpad

My 17'' MBP is running great since I purchased it in May 06. But now I'm noticing some discoloration near the trackpad area. It's a lot lighter, almost white, compared to the rest of handrest. I still use the white foamy strip, that came with the computer, everytime I close it. I also use the iKlear polish every two weeks.
Why the discoloration? What are my options? I'm also enrolled in the AppleCare plan. Thanks!

My last unit was weird like that too.
Took it to the Apple Store, two days later got a brand new case. Be firm with them if they give you a hard time.
You shouldn't have any problems though. The aluminum on these things is sort of funky sometimes based on your skin and acid levels.

  • Wrist pain in 2012 Retina MBP due to trackpad location?

I just got my new Retina MBP and have wrist pain from an hour of surfing.  I think the trackpad location so close to the edge of the laptop and the sharp edges near the inset area/"latch" have me contorting my wrist.  This is new pain, especially compared to my 2007 MBP, which had a good inch between the edge of the laptop and the trackpad edge.  Is anyone else experiencing this pain?  Other than buying a different trackpad and lugging that everywhere with me, are there other solutions? It's bad enough to have me consider returning it and sticking to my 2007 MBP.

The trackpad and location are pretty much the same on the 2011 and both Retina and non-Retina machines. I had a 2006 that I sold for a 2011 and it took me some time to become accustomed to the new arrangement - not any pain to speak of. I'm sure that if you'll just adjust your hands to take advantage of the new layout you'll have no problems.
    Good luck,

  • Bootcamp, XP, MBP 13" and trackpad

Is there any way to get the trackpad to work under Windows XP on a MBP 13 using bootcamp? I am working a cunning plan to get a devout PC user over to a Mac and a right-click capability is an absolute must on this trackpad. I use the magic trackpad and the two-finger click is second nature, can I do anything like it for XP on the MBP. The Control Panel only has controls for a mouse, is there one for a trackpad?
    Thanks - Lawrence

  • MBP froze, then trackpad inverted

    Hi,
    I've got a mid 2007 MBP, 2.2GHz, 2GB ram, running 10.4.11.
I just had a seriously weird and scary incident. I was just browsing the net, having woken the computer from sleep after a short walk to school. After about 2 minutes worth of browsing, the computer totally froze, with no response from anything, track pad or keyboard, no force quit, no mouse movement at all. I gave it some time to gather it's thoughts, see if it would come out of this, and then after about 30 seconds, the trackpad starts responding, except backwards and in big jumps.
So the trackpad was inverted, meaning if I moved my finger down, the mouse on the screen moves up. By "big jumps" i mean I'd move my finger just a little, and the mouse would jump about inch or two across the screen. THis went on for about 10 seconds before it froze again, and i just forced the computer off by holding the power button.
Lately I've noticed I've had many many page outs, despite 2GB of ram. Just approximately, it'd be something like 200,000 page ins and 150,000 page outs after a day or two of uptime. I don't know if this could be related.
Unfortunately, I let my last chance to buy applecare slip by me while I was in Europe this summer, so this computer is no longer covered under warranty (been kicking myself in the pants ever since, I simply forgot when i bought the computer and thought it had been later on!)
Thanks for any help or suggestions!
    Jeff

thanks for the response. I'll try a disk repair, and if that doesn't work, i'll just reformat, i've got everything backed up pretty much.
I'm surprised about the RAM though... just a year or two ago, 2GB was a lot of ram, and it's not like I'm doing anything more than I used to. Mail, Safari, iTunes, Word and Powerpoint, sometimes iPhoto, and more rarely, Matlab and Labview... but I see a lot of pageouts even before I start using those last two programs. They keep finding ways to make us need more ram and newer computers just to do the same stuff!

  • Blue ink stain near trackpad

When opening my Macbook this morning I discovered several blue ink marks (even though I haven't used blue ink in several days?) around the trackpad area. I've tried everything I could get my hands on, including ethanol without it moving. I'm really worried in 3-4 months time I'm going to have a Macbook which is covered in stains.
Why is the area so porous? I haven't had any yellow discolouration and (Macbook is week 21), do the Macbooks which have the "correct/fixed" surface still so prone to easily absorbing ink from your hands?
Does anyone have any suggestions for tackling this?
On an unrelated question, do the newer Macbooks have a significantly more rounded corners? Really thinking I might have to sell this machine due to a few things which I can't ignore, despite it being the best computer I've have in so many other respects.
    Macbook 1,83ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I too discovered what appeared to be several small blue ink stains to the right of my trackpad.
I had not used any ink pens and had been out, having closed my MacBook and found them when I came back!
I took it into the nearest Apple Store (although I purchased the MacBook from John Lewis) - they were very insistent that it was ink that I had somehow put there and tried to suggest that the marks looked like repeated patterns from skin (hand put down in different places on the MacBook!).
I even printed out the 1st two posts (which were all that were here then) to show them - dismissed these as "well, only a couple of people have said that...and you shouldn't believe everything you read..."!!!!!!!
I'm interested by the comments regarding the ink stains fading in the sunlight and maybe I'll try to test this out with mine!! Think I'll take a couple of photographs first so that I have some evidence, just in case it does work!!
Anyway, I have at least logged it with Apple - I was asking about this "exchange within 14 days" business which appears to be what is happening with the other discoloration - in the US. I was told I'd have to go back to John Lewis about that as that is where I purchased it from. It's such a *** though, I've just got everything set up - software loaded - plus I've upgraded the RAM (which is shockingly minimal at 512MB and a vast improvement at 2GB!!...) - so I guess I'd have to go through an exchange with the engineers copying all my data across - and who knows if I were to have the same problems again??!!
BTW, I also asked at the Apple Store about how HOT the MacBook gets - they reckoned it was perfectly OK (they knew that they get very hot....). I downloaded CoreDuoTemp and it's running at about 60 degrees, which they say is fine! (couldn't use it on your laptop though!....far too HOT!!!...)
Anyway, will post any updates following my trials...

  • Dark grey wear near trackpad...

My computer is relatively new, and about 2 months ago, these weird graphite-looking smudges appeared near my trackpad. It looked like a pencil smudge, but it doesn't come off with water or anything. It's also on the left side of my trackpad, which is the side which I use the least (and I never wear watches or anything like that).
Is this problem common and is there a way to clean it off?
    Thanks!

"But what can they do about it?"
Ask them when you take your computer in. Or take advantage of your 90 day FREE phone Apple tech support & ask.

  • 15" MBP: issues with trackpad & beachballing

I've had a 2.8ghz 15" MBP (5400rpm 500gb drive, 1.7 firmware update) for 13 days and I've noticed that the trackpad seems to ignore commands for a split second at at time (as If it's waking up after inactivity) and sometimes the machine will just start beachballing for a few seconds at a time.
The later issue has only appeared when using the browser, which, at the moment, happens to be Firefox (I spend 90% of the time using Firefox, so I would probably notice issues there first, anyway). Firefox is known for being more of a memory hog than Safari, so that could be playing in to this - but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen these issues, and if I should make a call to Apple (?).

I'm getting this as well. I just bought my machine (same as yours) about 2 weeks ago, and have just been noticing the problem. I don't believe this happened when I first started using this machine. It might be either the update to 10.5.8 or the firmware update. I also thought this was a Firefox issue, but started noticing this happening while using other applications, and even browsing through files through Finder. It's getting pretty annoying.

  • 2012 13" MBP keyboard and trackpad inop after OS loads

I have a 2012 13" MBP (non retina) that had water spilled on the counter that pooled around it and some seeped into the bottom (don't ask how). I have taken it apart, cleaned it with alcohol, baked it to ensure it is dry and now almost everything works.
The odd thing is that the keyboard and trackpad will work during system boot to, say, reset PRAM or boot into safe mode or select any other combination; however, when the system boots into the OS (or recovery mode, etc) the keyboard and trackpad stop working all together. I can connect an external mouse and keyboard and it works fine...I installed a fresh HDD with a fresh copy of Yosemite and still have the same symptoms.
I doubt it's a hardware related issue since they both work on startup, but for the life of me I can't locate the issue that prevents them from working. I have turned off BT, reset PRAM and SMC, reset by holding power button in for a long time after shut down, all with the same results.
I also replaced the top case (new keyboard/trackpad) and have the same results....
What's interesting is if I keep pressing caps lock while the system is booting (press once per second) the keyboard and mouse will work after boot, but then stop after a minute...which is some progress I guess. I am going to try and reinstall the OS one more time and see if that makes a difference....I have reached the end of google and am out of ideas....anyone have any thoughts?

Update:  I've justed attempted a boot from a Mavericks install USB stick.  The trackpad and keyboard are still not recognised.
Unless I'm mistaken, I've either a very odd hardware fault, or something has got scrambled with non-volatile memory/firmware.

  • ...Another Spill. MBP Keyboard Backlight/trackpad problem

    Hello,
A friend (yes he remains a friend) recently spilled red wine all over my new Macbook Pro. I was very upset at first, but have calmed down... after several weeks. I've dried it out and I'm taking it to Apple to get it cleaned.
The only clear problems that exist at the moment: the keyboard is not illuminating fully, it is only bright in the middle; the tap-to-click feature on the trackpad has a one-second delay before any command is registered.
The problem with the keyboard backlight, i think, is due to wine staining the sheet of plastic separating the keyboard from the LEDs behind it. Could anyone suggest a means of cleaning this or any other method of reviving the backlight, IF they have not short-circuited.
Any suggestions other than getting Apple to help with the unresponsive trackpad?
    Thanks
    Jamie

What I was trying to communicate when I added "which will also include the trackpad" to a previous post was that the top case, the keyboard, the trackpad and various other internal parts that are attached to the inside of the top case will ALL be replaced when Apple repairs the machine, because Apple considers the whole assembly to be one part. Cleaning the keyboard effectively is impossible, but it would be pointless even if it were possible, because Apple is just going to discard or recycle it. When Apple repairs a machine, it comes back in virtual like-new condition — there are no partial repairs. You may prefer not to spring for a complete overhaul, but that's what you're going to get — and pay for — regardless.

  • My MBP-Retina's trackpad makes a "creaky" noise after initial click sound.

The sound reminds me of a creaky, ungreased door hinge.
I simply do a click and that creaky noise occurs. This occurs usually in the bottom right corner and right edge of my Trackpad.
Are any of you experiencing this?
Is this a major issue that I can contact AppleCare about?
    Thanks for helping out.

Okay. Thank you, Kappy. I appreciate your input.
But still, if anyone else knows EXACTLY what the problem is and HOW TO DIAGNOSE IT, please let me know!!
P.S. The computer still runs great; I'm just concerned that the sound will eventually develop into a bigger problem.

  • MBP Mid 2010 Trackpad acting up after installation of Yosemite.

I recently Installed Yosemite and after installation my built-in trackpad now acts erratically. This include causing cursor to travel in directions that are in no way similar to gesture. Also clicking on words and showing def without being prompted to. Random gestures at random times.

    In Applications->Utilities  start  SystemInformation.
In the Hardware section of the navigation panel on the left, look at "Power" then look at  "health information": give us the 'Cycle Count' and "Condition".
(even if you don't think it has anything to do with your issue)

  • MBP i7 XP trackpad

Has anyone gotten the trackpad to work under Windows XP with Boot Camp on a new Core i7 Macbook Pro? I installed the drivers from the MPB's DVD and have had no luck at all even with basic mouse movement. The driver seems to be having an error loading or something.

A FIX!! This worked for me. Take a look at this article.

  • Just purchased MBP (frm Apple) TrackPad much too sensitive! Any way to adjust?

Any way to adjust track pad sensitivity?

    By too sensitive I mean:
Trackpad seems to take on a life of it's own particularly when deleting:
just hovering the cursor over the delete icon results in activating delete.
That's just one example - but the most dramatic and easiest to explain.
    More if you need 'em.

  • MBP Late 2009 Trackpad Problem

    Hi,
I recently updated to Mountain Lion.  During that process, I realised that the mechanical click on the trackpad is not working.  At the end of the instalation, where it asks you to accept the terms and condiotns, I was trying to click on accept ,but with no avail.  Just to be clear, it is pysically clicking (you can hear the ticks) but its not regestring the click.  I dont know if the problem existed before the ML update or not, since I ve always been using the tap to click feature.  I know it was working about a month ago as I had to boot into dignostic mode to do a disk repair, where tap to click is not operative.  But wether the click broke down after that incident, or after the ML upgrade, I really dont know.
I am okay with the tap to click for, but the problem I know I will face is when I try to log in to diagonsitic mode, or even at the user switch screen, where tap to click is non operative.
I  read about a similar problem with the battery bulging, but that prevented the clicking all together. But I think its not my case since the clicking is working, but its just not registering.
I currently reside outside the US, and there is no Apple technicians in my area.  I was wondering if there is anything that I can do myself to take care of this issue.  Your thoughts are highly appreciated..
    Thanks
    Kadi

So I deleted cache files for various apps (incl. finder) and ran several tools (ie. mycleanmac) and still the same behaviour:
Whenever the finder has to update some settings, ie. disks, networks, screens, outputs... it hangs for a full minute and then goes on.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you in advance

  • Wearing on edge near trackpad

Hello. After searching through many forums, including the ones here, I am posting to figure out what's up with the wearing, also known as pitting, on my unibody aluminium macbook (mid 2009). I've noticed a common theme is for other users to aggressively insist that any such damage must be due to a lack of care by the laptop owner. This has not been the case. The fact that this damage exclusively happens where my palm contacts the laptop suggests to me that body-laptop contact is the cause of this damage. I have heard of some apple stores repairing this issue as per their outlines, and some seem to get rejection as it is cosmetic damage caused by the user. I'd say skin contacting the laptop is something expected, and as such should have been considered when picking materials and designing the computer. I've been given an entire new iphone simply because my 3g would be spotty. I've been given an entire new macbook after I noticed dead pixels. It would seem unreal if apple didn't regard this similarly.

The pitting and abnormal wear is directly due to your skin chemistry in contact with the aluminum.  Healthy skin has a ph of 4 to 5.5 which is slightly acidic.  Mix that with salt, heat and moisture, and electro-chemistry is in full swing.  Pitting is the result, the the same as a car driving on salt covered, slushy winter roads in the Midwest.    My 8 month old magic mouse has pitting on both sides where it's in contact with my thumb and index finger.  Just discovered it today and need to address with Apple.  The most amazing designs by Sir. Ive, but the material chosen is not playing well.
