17" MBP Display only displays 3/4ths of screen

I purchased a 2.16 GHz 17" Macbook Pro (Core Duo) off of ebay in Mint condition. The computer had warranty, but did not have the extra 3 year Applecare warranty. I decided not to purchase the warranty, as I didn't think I would need it. Isn't that how all of these stories start?
Recently, my monitor has acted up, the backlight of the bottom half of the screen was different then the top half (slightly brighter). The computer was still usable, but it was just a little thing that I noticed.
Lately, the monitor has actually ceased to work correctly. The bottom half of the monitor now shows only one color (depending on what's displayed on the screen) and the top half is split in two, the top of that half is displaying normally, the bottom half of that half freaks out, also depending on what's being displayed. In order to get the monitor to show up again, I have to pinch the top right corner in a certain way and it will show.
I have dropped the laptop once, but it was only about a foot and on the other side of the computer (on the corner by the DVD Drive). It put a small dent, but it doesn't seem to have effected anything, display nor DVD drive (From the looks of a take-apart guide from ifixit.com)
I have also noticed that the display seems to be leaving marks on the computer, on the left side by the power adapter. When closing the display, the monitor also seems to be slightly out of alignment, I can easily feel it on the right side of the display.
My one year warranty has passed already, and I don't have phone support either, so they won't talk to me, and the nearest apple store is a distance away (about an hour drive), and there is usually an hour wait to be seen (It is one of two Apple Stores in Orlando, the next nearest being in Tampa, 2 hours+ away) so a trip to find out that I need to pay a grand to get my computer fixed is not a fun trip.
What I needed to know is if this is a defect that needs to be fixed by Apple, or what. I have noticed a slight bend as well, and having issues with the latch (it won't even open most of the time), the same noted by this blogger (http://mybiggestcomplaint.com/apple-refusing-to-fix-my-macbook-pro/99/) and wondered if maybe the strain from the springs on the display have caused an issue with the cable going to the monitor (again from ifixit.com).
Has anyone had this issue or know anything about this? I know the power adapter is under warranty (had that replaced already, wasn't charging) and the battery issue (I had that issue as well... lucky me). Does anyone know if this would be considered a defect or what should be done. I'm a college student and I really can't afford to have my computer gone for months on time, but my laptop needing to be attached to an external defeats the purpose of a laptop...

I am sorry to hear about your problems. I, too, have noticed that my screen bends from side to side. If I press one side of the screen flat, the other side rises about an eighth of an inch..it looks exactly like the pictures on the link you provided. After reading about this problem from others, I took my laptop to the genius bar (Florida Mall in Orlando, in fact) and was told that the bend is a common problem in MacBook Pros. He said, however, that it is a cosmetic problem and would not cause any damage to my machine. The store would fix the screen, but it would take a week and he said that a small gap would still exist. Again, however, I have not had any problems with the latch (yet) and it was still under warranty. The display on my 15" MacBook Pro was replaced (under warranty) due to dead pixels; the attached receipt indicated that a new display, labor, & tax totaled $800...so I'd say a 17" display alone would be ~$1000. However your problem may be some type of driver for the display, which I'd imagine would be cheaper to fix. Before you go to the Genius Bar, you should know that it costs $100 or so for them to LOOK at your out-of-warranty machine. I assume you are at UF? I would imagine there are a few computer stores in Gainesville that will fix Macs for much cheaper than the Apple Store. Apple produces great machines, but their reliability is average (go figure, they're assembled in China) and unfortunately that means there are some lemons. I would definitely recommend purchasing the extended warranty if you purchase another Mac (for the MacBook Pro, it is $250 with a student discount). Did you purchase your laptop recently? If so, I think E-Bay offers some kind of protection against buying a lemon. I hope all turns out well for you and your laptop.

  • Why does my 27" LED Cinema Display only display maximum resolution of 1920x1200, when my Mid 2009 13" MBP says it supports up to 2560x1600?

When I have my MBP connected to my 27" LED Cinema Display, my display settings only show a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, when the specs on both my MBP and Display say they they support up to 2560x1600?  Am I missing something?

I finally decided to just take my MBP down to the Apple store and see what would happen if I connected it to one of their new ACDs.  At 1st, the guy at the Genius Bar told me that my MBP only supported 1280x800 as a maximum resolution.  I told him that was for my MBP screen, and not an external monitor.  Finally I convinced him to let me connect my MBP to one of their monitors.  Low and behold, looking at the Display settings pane I saw some addtional resolutions, including 2560x1600!
So, now I have confirmed that my MBP can drive an external monitor to a resolution of 2560x1600, using just the single mini displayport connection.  I just have to figure out what's wrong with my ACD.  Suspecting that my older ACD might not support this higher resolution, I did finally discover that my model only supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1600.
    Sorry for all the confusion...

  • Display only uses middle third of screen, how to go full width?

Using win7-64, IE8 displays correctly on large crt, most web sites using FF4 use about the 50% of the display width, centered ok, some text is also overlaid, but top 15%(tools, bookmarks, etc ) are full wideth and ok

As to games, that will depend on the resolution each game can support. If the game can't support the iMac's native aspect ratio, then you'll either get a stretched screen or black bars. Check with your game's publisher for specific information.

  • My iPad2 suddenly displays only the wallpaper on home screen.

A hard reset gives me all my apps back, but what can I do to prevent this from happening repeatedly?  iOS & apps are updated.

Is this the reset you re doing?  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. Hi,
Since Release 6.20, a standard width of 120 columns has been defined for the outer frame for text-symbol,but  the width was previously 83 columns before its release.
The below code shows the text symbol where text-004 = abcdefghijklmnop..... of 132 characters.
But it will display only 84 characters.
SELECTION-SCREEN BEGIN OF BLOCK b4 WITH FRAME TITLE text-004.
    SELECTION-SCREEN END OF BLOCK b4.
so if u want to display entire text it can be viewed on your list ,
    write: text-004.
    This would be helpful.

  • Web-browser only display Summary Status and no menu for configing

    Guys,
I have 4 Cisco Aironet 1140. I open a web browser IE 8 and type their address "http://<ip address>". Then I enter my username and password in the browser and successfully login to the access point.
But, There is something strange, why I only see Summary status of my access point after the login process success??? I can't config anything...
I add a new username and use highest privilage, but the result still the same. Same unusual web display, only displaying summary status of the access point, I can't config ssid, vlan, etc.
    Here's my configuration:
    username Zicco privilege 15 password 7 123A551A02055F106B
    username Bl4st privilege 15 secret 5 $1$UJom$UoNBR07HmSGXdoxTUR1W40
    ip http server
    ip http authentication local
    no ip http secure-server
Is there any configuration command that must be added? Please help me.
    Thank you

Hi George, today we solved the problem. With adding this command: "config(terminal)#ip http authentication local" all of 5 access points now able to managed via web browser.
Sometimes, we can use access point's web browser without adding this command. But in my cases, only using command of"ip http server" isn't enough. You must add "ip http authentication local" command to your configuration. I dont know why.
And we must have at least one: username <username> privil 15 pass <password> that is full privileged user to use as username and password logon in your access point browser. Otherwise we can't logon to our access point.
Thank you George, I appreciate your kindness. Regards

  • Display Only Screen design

    Hi,
I have created a screen layout wherein all fields are marked for display only. I assigned this screen layout in a functional authorization for buyers. When I checked, there are still fields left editable such as:
    1. Purch Org
    2. Company Code
    3. Conditions
    4. Line Item number
    5. All fields in account assignment tab of line item
I want all fields to be display only. How will I do it?

    Hi Jackie,
If you need all the fields to be in display mode assigned to the buyer. Remove the Authorization of ME21N from the user using the T Code SU01.

  • Best way to set up two thunderbolt displays and thunderbolt ethernet on a Late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports?

I have a late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports. I want to set up two external displays (both have usb ports on the back but not thunderbolt so I can't daisy-chain) but one of my thunderbolt ports is being taken up by the ethernet adapter. Is it possible to convert one of my displays to plug into my open HDMI slot? Or is it better to use the two thunderbolt ports for the two displays and switch the ethernet to the slower usb adapter?

You can use a HDMI to DVI adapter if the display resolution is not greater than 1920 x 1200.
    <http://startech.com/Cables/Audio-Video/HDMI/>
or you could use wireless for your network connection.

If you use 5GHz, it should be nearly as fast as Ethernet.

  • I'd like to know how much performance difference there is in the 15 in MBP with Retina display?

    Hi:
I have a legacy (2007) MBP that needs to be replaced. It still runs, but not well, given that the HD is nearly full.  The headphone out jack is "hit or miss" in terms of working properly.....you get the picture.
I'll replace it with a 15 MBP with retina display, and also go with the 1 TB drive rather than the 512 as its actually cheaper (I think) to have Apple put the larger drive in than upgrade after the fact.
My question relates to the available processor speeds:
2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz
2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
Is there any discernible difference between these processors, and if so,  under what conditions do they manifest themselves, and how significant, generally speaking are the differences.
I'm sure it depends on the software being run and tasks being performed....video rendering, gaming, etc.
I should also mention that I'm not the most patient person (serious understatement) when it comes to the speed of even basic tasks....word processing, itunes, youtube videos, and the like.
I generally work with multiple windows open and with my current computer's age and remaining HD space get the "spinning pinwheel of death" with great frequency.
One last bit of information. I'm a musician and composer, who needs to get into the 21st century and actually use the notation software I've got (Sibelius).  Any computer I have needs to be able to play back scores well, which means playing/processing multiple instrumental parts at the same time,
Thanks in advance for your advice,
    Michael

The only way you can get a valid estimate is by someone examining the MBP directly.  Since no one on these forums can see or examine your MBP, you will need to get this infomation from a qualified repair shop.  It seems that you already have secured one estimate.  You can also bring the MBP to an Apple store and have a genius bar examine it for FREE.
    Ciao.

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.

  • External Display only with VGA Adapter working

Hello, I'm german so sorry for my bad english
After updating to Leopard 10.5.2 and installation of the Leopard Graphic Update, my external Display isn't working with DVI anymore. If I plug it in, my desktop flashes and I also get the monitor information tab of my external Display (Name and Settings correct). But the Screen stays black as in power saving mode. If I use the DVI -> VGA Adapter, everything works fine...
Could that Problem be realted to the new Updates?
I've also checked every hint of that Forum (PRAM reset, deleting Preference Files, trying to boot with closed MBP, ...), nothing worked for me. The Problem also occurs in Bootcamp! The external Display is recognized fine, but will not display any image, only if I use the Adapter.

According to Apple support, it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to a 27" cinema display
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP hotter than it needs to be.
If you would like to have the previous behaviour restored, please consider lobbying Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to Apple include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.

  • Are there any new 17 " MBPs with matte display out which run properly?

    Hallo,
I am about to buy one 17 MBP with matte display. But now I ve read all these posts and
I hesitate to order one. I don't want to have all the trouble to send it back and then wait
again. So, are there any guys who can not report these graphic issues?
    Yours
    Matthias

CD = Core Duo, the 1st generation of 17" MBP from way back in 2006. It was flawless when I got it. It's still running perfectly 3 years later. Only issue was a bad battery, and that was a known manufacturing problem at Sony that affected Macs as well as PC laptops. Apple extended the warranty to cover the issue, and replaced mine for free ~3 months after my one-year warranty expired. Two colleagues have the new 17" unibody MBP, one with glossy and one with matte, both are flawless.

  • High end MBP 15" or low end MBP with retina display?

I am having trouble deciding between the two laptops so I wanted to get some opinions.
I use photoshop and dreamweaver a lot. I ususally will have tons of applications/tabs open at the same time, including a lot of pages with different video players. I use iMovie at most once per month. I do like to plug in multiple displays through the thunderbolt ports so having 2 and an hdmi port would be nice. It mainly comes down to is the macbook pro with retina worth losing .3Ghz per core on the retina. To fix the memory (not RAM) I figured when necessary I would just get a thunderbolt external hard drive. And finally how much more space would the OSX and/or a program take up with so many more pixels. I also need this computer to last a while because I will most likely have to wait more than 4 years to update, but I can upgrade the ram of the mbp with retina display later to 16gb, but the macbook pro 15 has a 3.6ghz processor. Once again if i need more space I will just get a thunderbolt external drive. So could I please have some oppinions on what I should chose?

Even my 2011 MBP can take 16 GB RAM.  I would be VERY surprised if the 2012 model cannot handle 16 GB RAM once macsales.com and crucial.com test enough of the available RAM types to find the most-compatible type.  Apple advertises limitations based on testing with "commonly available" parts.  2x8 GB RAM chips are still around $150, so Apple probably did not test them.  But only time (and those willing to test with their brand-new units) will prove that.
As to the actual increase is speed from the extra 0.3, I would not hazard a guess because you will run a very specific set of software under a very specific CPU and GPU (graphics processing unit) load.  But I would suspect the Retina unit will run faster than the non-Retina IF you buy a non-Retina with a HDD instead of the SDD.  SDD will outperform HDD in most cases.
My humple opinion, Retina units are lighter and lack utility ports.  But they have the quad-core CPUs people want and more display-ports.  Those who program computers will likely buy the non-Retina units.  Those who play with pictures will buy the Retina units.
