17" MBP Freezing/Weird Restart issue

Hi All
I recently took my 17" MBP in for service due to extreme heat, a bad display and a latch that didnt work properly. I got it back lastnight and the heat is WAY less than before, display is better and the latch works but unfortunately every now and then my computer completely locks up (I'm not doing anything intensive, or particular, although I have noticed it twice when quitting programs).
My only way of restarting is to hold down the power button and wait a few seconds before turning it on, however when I do this I hear the mac chime, but the display shows nothing. If I leave the MBP to itself, after about a minute it will restart again on it's own (still no display) and this continues to the point where I hear the mac chime every few seconds.
I then have to remove the battery, hold the power button for 5 seconds to restore to factory defaults and then the computer will start up... until it freezes again. Rinse wash, repeat.
Anyone know what could be causing this? I know they replaced the logic board but he told me that it passed all hardware tests. Anyone encountered this before?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Johnathan,
When you remove the battery and hold down the power button do you also disconnect the a/c adapter? If you you are correctly resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) correctly. You don't want to do this twice in a row or else you can fry your computer.
Have you tried resetting the PRAM? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If that doesn't help boot to the install disk and run disk utilities. To do this insert the install disk, shut down, hold the C key after you turn the computer on, from the top menu bar select utilities>disk utility>mac HD>first aid>verify disk, if there are any errors run repair disk, then run verify disk once more to make sure the errors were repaired, if not call apple. You should also run verify disk permissions.
Although your computer went through extensive testing before it left repair it is possible that something was missed.
Hope this helps

  • 2009 MBP: freezing and wifi issues

My mid-2009 Macbook Pro (A1286) has been acting flaky. Sometimes the wifi gets turned off when I close it, and I can't turn it back on even in the Network control panel--only restarting it  turns it back on. Also I've been getting frequent hard freezes, where everything locks up (no beach ball or anything) and I have to hold the power key down to restart.
I'm running 10.7.3 with 4GB ram. I've tried safe boot, starting from disc and running disk utilitites, running DiskWarrior, repairing permissions. For the wifi problem I've tried unchecking remember open windows, and I've tried moving the active wifi to the top in sys prefs.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software – potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions – they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are several lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search. A text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag – do not type – the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer – no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • MBP freezing on restart

I was using my MacBook Pro this evening, and the update window came up as it does every so often. I let it start installing the updates. I was running Mozilla Firefox and iTunes at the time, and also another user was open with a few applicatinons running. I accidentally moved my mouse cursor to the "start screensaver corner" and it tried to start. The screen went black and I could move my mouse around, but it wouldn't leave the screensaver or show the enter password box. I couldn't do anything so I held the power button down until it turned off. When I turned it on again, the grey screen with the darker grey apple came up and the spinner started spinning. This screen never goes away now. It won't do anything past this grey screen. I did a few of the things that I found in the discussion threads, but none have seemed to do anything.
When I did the hardware test, it said that everything checked out. It won't let me boot from the DVD for some reason... I hold the C key and nothing happens. I let it sit for a while and tried again but that isn't working either.
This is frustrating and extremely disappointing to me. I've had and worked with many Apple computers for many years and never had any major problems, but this has me concerned. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you!

If you hold down the option/alt key instead you shuld get into the Startup Manager and then be able to select your Installation DVD 1 as the boot disk.

  • I did the 5.1.1 update over wifi, had update issues, then updated on Itunes no problem, now my phone continues to freeze and restart, any suggestions on how to correct this

I did the 5.1.1 update over wifi, had update issues, then updated on Itunes no problem, now my phone continues to freeze and restart, any suggestions on how to correct this - thank you

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

  • Unable to restart, MBP freezes 9 times out of 10

My MBP freezes on start up or rebooting. I have tried zapping PRAM.Ran disc repair utility and disc is ok. The MacBook Pro Firmware update 1.0 installs but on restart the firmware fails to update as the computer freezes. Is there any solution? At my wits end. No software changes recently. Startup freezes have only been an increasing problem over the last 5 days. Now the computer is consistently freezing. Could it be Norton antivirus? Any hope?

Hi, Lauren. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your hard drive is just way too full to function properly.
Check and see if you may have one or more Previous System folders on the iBook. If so, delete them and empty the Trash, and see if that gets you some breathing room.
You need to keep at least 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive as available space for proper functioning of the drive.
Here is a link to an article which gives some pointers on freeing up space:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
Also, the warranties on a hard drive are usually three years, so if the hard drive is the original one, it's likely running on borrowed time. Are you keeping a current backup in case that drive fails? If not, you need to be doing that.

  • MBP freezes for 2 seconds and restart!

    hi there!
in february i bought my MBP and have sometimes software crashes of MAIL, SAFARI, iDVD..... I thought there were the normal problems after APPLE changed to the INTEL processors, but sometimes (once in a week) my MBP freezes for 2 seconds and reboot. I run the hardware test and everythings seems to be fine
can somebody help me? thanks a lot!
MAC BOOK PRO 2.16 MHz Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi bfunky,
Try resetting the usual suspects, PRAM, PMU, etc.
If that doesn't resolve anything maybe it's time to take it by an Apple store to have it checked out..

  • Weird Playback Issue...

I have this weird playback issue with iTunes for Windows. I am using Vista and I think the cause of the problem is that I am using MacDrive to access my OS X partition. But anyways, on with the problem. So the problem is that when I play a song, the song will play for like 5 seconds and then it will just go the next song. This song will do the same thing, and so-on and so-forth. Then, during this time, my Mac formatted hard drive is unavailable while iTunes is running. In "My Computer" the drive is there, but when I try to open it, Explorer freezes. Then, when I exit iTunes, it doesn't really exit. It still shows up in the task manager and when I try to end the process, it just plain doesn't end. I have to restart my computer to gain full use of it again. After the restart I can access my Mac disks, but once I start iTunes and try to play a song, I get the same thing again. And in case thats not weird enough, I can play the MP3's in WMP fine, and they will also play in iTunes fine if I actually open them, rather than just select them from my library. If I go to file open and select a song on my Mac drive, it will play fine, but then once I try to play a song from my library, I get caught in that vicious cycle. Anyone else had this problem or anything? Thanks. Also, is there an alternative program to Mac Drive that will allow me to read HFS partitions?

Post more about your situation... what format is the video, and where are you storing the video files? i.e., on a disk other than your startup disk? The adobe install is likely not the problem... I run adobe software along side FCS on about 75 workstations, and don't see issues like you describe.
Wavy? not accurate? what are you talking about?

  • Please help: My MBP freezes when not connected to a power supply.

When I am working on my MBP (specs below) without it connected to the power supply, it will freeze every once in a while. I have no option but to hold down the power button to do a hard restart – and then it takes a good five minutes to boot back up.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? It NEVER freezes when it is connected to power.
BTW – the MBP freezes randomly, *sometimes the battery will be near full, sometimes only half full,* so I don't think it has to do with the amount of power left in the battery.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

there is definitely a problem Apple must solve, i have this issue too.
here is a thread i started
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1775557&tstart=0
my mac is still out for repair, let's see if they are able to fix it.. i am not that confident so far..

  • How can you debug sudden freezes and restarts? Only overheating?

My iMac, under Win XP via Boot Camp, will freeze and restart unpredictably when playing games. I thought I had tracked it down to overheating, but it's not that simple. Is there any error logging at the BIOS level with Boot Camp or any record when it shuts itself off and restarts? I think it must be BIOS and/or hardware, since there are no Windows events that seem to be related. If it was a video or audio driver crash problem, wouldn't I get a BSOD and some sort of error log (since I have automatic restarting turned off in Windows)?
Does anyone know more about when the iMac hardware will trigger a restart due to heat issues? I thought I had solved this by using smcFanControl on the Mac side to bump up the fan speeds and then tracking it with SpeedFan on the Windows side. It worked great for 2 nights. Then the 3rd night, it crashed and restarted right away twice, and then played fine for an hour or more. The 4th night, it crashed and restarted 3 times in a row, within minutes, and we gave up, somehow restraining ourselves from tossing the Mac out the window onto the sidewalk.
According to SpeedFan, the first time it crashed, CPU temps were only at 16C, HD at 37C, and overall at 35C. The second time, CPU temps had gotten up to 25C. The last time, CPU temps again were only at 16C (i.e. it crashed so fast, we hadn't even started playing, so it was effectively idle). Other temps remained pretty constant the whole time.
Given all that, it's hard for me to believe it's a matter of overheating. Yet I have no idea what else it could be, or why upping the cooling seemed to fix the problem for 2 days, and then the next day we were back to square one.
I guess Boot Camp should come with a big sign, only for word processing. What a waste of time - everything else Windows I do in Fusion. The one thing I wanted to bother with Boot Camp for is almost impossible to do, play a simple, not even new or state of the art game. I'm at a total loss what's happening, now that my overheating theory seems to have blown away.

Hi. I just wanted to tell you that I have the exact same problem, only I've got a Mac Pro. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for you, but I posted details about what I've found here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7217936#7217936.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    Tip for Data Backup:
Remove the HDD and install it in a USB HDD Enclosure. You can then plug it into a USB port of a working machine. If there is any life left in the drive you should be able to browse it and copy files off to HDD of host machine

  • Brand new E5 freezes and restarts often

I recieved the E5 not even two days ago, and I cannot tell you how much frustration I've gone through trying to stop it from freezing and restarting.  It has happened in the menu, in the contact list, just trying to do random things.  Also, it happens on its own, for example I just noticed it restarting while I'm typing this sentence, and I haven't touched it for five minutes.
It is extremely upsetting for a BRAND new phone to be acting like this, and thus far I am extremely displeased with the Nokia brand.  I am not really too tech savvy, but I do know some, so please offer me suggestions and help with how to get this phone running optimally.  Thanks.

I can sympathize, I'm having exactly the same problem. infact if you check the forum there are a number of people having similar issues with this model. My problems have been going on for over a month now. Issues started 3 days after getting the phone, right after getting the last of various updates sent to the phone by my network provider. Initially I spoke with the provider  (Orange) who advised me to take it to my closest Nokia Care centre but haven't had the time due to work and still have my old (working) Handset. Have also noted from other posts that many have not had the issues solved even after taking the Handset to the care center for repair.
Have done the removal of battery and set the phone back to it's original factory settings but issues continued. Freezing / Restarting was initially happening only every 3-4 days but has gradually got worse. However, last week had message on the phone saying a software update was available to update via PC, whilst doing so phone had to restart but failed to turn back on which resulted in a failed update. Now, though phone can turn on it only does so for 5-10 mins at a time and only does so if I keep it in temperatures lower than 15 degrees celcius (I won't bore you with how I figured that out!). So basically I can only use it outdoors or if I put it in a fridge. Also the nokia software updaters now seem to think the phone has been updated even though it failed. With the number of issues many people are having with this phone I hope nokia are trying their best to rectify the issues. It is extremely frustrating as this brand new phone is basically unusable. Hopefully I can get it to a care center in the next few days but I'm not very confident they will fix it permanently.

  • M8530f freeze/lockup issue.

Was playing final fantasy xiv on pc earlier when suddenly I lost all sound, effects, and animations in game. When I attempted to exit the game the entire PC locked up and crashed. Originally I thought this a software issue with the game. However after restarting the pc began having hang issues on every program used on it shortly after restart. Diagnostic tools are saying there are no issues. However programs are becoming unresponsive for minutes whenever any type of input is attempted and refuse to close when told to. Resource monitor does not show any high usage of cpu or ram on the system.
    Computer model m8530f
    Windows Vista 64bit
Most of the sytem is still factory spec with the following exceptions
system has 6gb of ram. I replaced a single 1 gb chip with the 2gb chip from another pc of the same model that suffered a sata port failure in the motherboard.
Video card was replaced with a geforce 610GT. Onboard video has been disabled.
Sytem was not in use for a few years until previous system became inoperable. After making those 2 listed changes the system ran just fine for about 2 weeks with no issues until today. After a reboot I seem to get about 5 minutes of normal performance before the lag, freeze, and hang issues begin occuring.

    Hi UkyoSonoda,
I would start with the recent hardware changes made.
Before reversing those changes verify your graphics drivers are installed properly by opening Control Panel - Device Manager. Do you have errors? If yes, uninstall graphics drivers and reinstall drivers or check for updated drivers at Nvidia website.
If the symptom persists, then run system file checker.
Then run hardware diagnostic tools . If any test fails then you may have found the problem.
    Lastly, undo the ram upgrade.
Then undo the graphics card upgrade.
Hopefully one of these procedures will isolate the cause and return your PC to a stable condition.
Have you checked internal component temperatures? This free progam is nice. Try installing if you can. I realize you have stability problems and may not be able to install and use prior to a system lockup.
    Good luck!
    Jaco

  • SR MBP freezes intermittently.

    Hi,
My SR MBP freezes occasionally. Te only option is to hold the power button until it restarts. My wife has had to remove the battery to get it to restart - twice.
I've tried using the disk utilities and no hardware problems were reported. How do I 'repair permissions'? Is that likely to help?
Any suggestions? There does not appear to be a common cause of the crashes.
    Thanks in advance.

One thing to check is the battery itself, and make sure it isn't swollen or distorted and exerting pressure on the trackpad from below. I believe the battery runs hotter when the Mac is on battery alone, and this might possibly be a factor.
    Good luck!

This got so bad, that I reformatted my entire drive, reinstalled all of the Apple programs from scratch, and then only select third party ones that I always use (Microsoft Office, OmniFocus, Firefox, Evernote).  That's about it.  The main program that constantly stalls out, though, is Apple Mail. I have 80% of my hard drive free (240GB out of 300GB).  I cannot figure it out, and it's driving me nuts.  Any suggestions?

Dear Hampton, I have exactly the same problem with my MacBook Pro and it seems to be a RAM problem. I took it to the Genius Bar and sadly the truth, which the Genius bar guys were reluctant to admit, is that there are issues with the way the OS manages RAM, failing to clear Inactive memory and keep Free memory at a healthy level. If you go to the Activity Monitor and check the system memory I bet you will find that whenever you're seeing the "Exited: Killed: 9" lines one after the other as posted, you Free Memory would have been gobbled up by Inactive Memory. Extra memory would seem to be the permanent solution, sadly, and Apple charge an arm and a leg for it. Or you may have to live like I am at the moment, i.e. having the Activity Monitor permanently on the dock to keep an eye on Inactive Memory. When Inactive Memory gets too big I launch Terminal (Utilities) and type "purge." It frees up memory by clearig Inactive memory so that your machine's memory is as fresh as it is soon after you've started it. Good luck
