17" MBP Frozen after Sleep

I have a 17" MBP 2.66GHZ I7 that is connected to an Apple Cinema display.  Most nights when I allow the computer to go to sleep it wakes to a frozen but distorted log-in screen.  I have to force shutdown via the power buttton and then power it back up.  This happens when the lid is open - I leave it that way for purposes of keeping the MBP cool and the fans quiet at night.  Any ideas what might be causing this to occur?

Try starting in the Safe Mode and see if you get the same results:

Also try using another account to see if you get the same results. Disk Utility doesn't repair permissions for your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  'resetpassword' (without the 's) and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • MBP gets frozen after sleep

Hi! I have an early 2011 15" MBP running OS X 10.8.2. For some time I experience a problem which happened rarely in the past and got more and more frequent and now it happens always.
The symptom is that whenever I leave my MBP running with the display black (I configured the upper left corner of the screen to switch it off) for some time after like 3-5 hours it gets forzen. When I move the mouse the screen comes back, and the program running in the top window responds sometime, but latest after the first attempt when I try to switch to any other running programs or click the Apple menu, it hangs and nothing works any more. (Usually the CPU fans are on top speed but I'm not sure wether it's always the case.)
Then I press the power btn for 10sec and restart it. If I'm luckey the system boots if not is does not and either a question mark or a folder icon appears on the grey background. Then I usually reboot it in repair mode and lunch the disk utility, and make it repair all the problems, but it rarely finds any.
This behaviour is experienced even with no programs running (so after a fresh restart), so I don't think it's related to any of the user software. Yesterday I also tried to reinstall the system completely but it didn't help.
I have a feeling that it might be related to the indexing process, because after such a forced reboot, a long indexing starts usually; but if it were the reason, others might have the same issue i guess, so I'm really out of ideas...
Any hints/help is appreciated, thank you in advance!

  • MBP restarting after sleep

    Hi,
I've had a new MBP Core 2 model for about 2 weeks now. In that time I've noticed a troublesome behavior whereby on random occassions simply closing the computer to put it to sleep causes it to RESTART when I open it back up.
    This happened this morning.
I was doing a preview rendering in Cinema4D and left the house. I got to my next location, opened the computer and it was in the process of restarting.
I lost the data I was processing.
This has now happened a handful of times.
    What's going on?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Mine did this a few times after I got it in December. I reset the PMU a few times, and it hasn't done it for 3 weeks now of continuous use. It no longer restarts, on occasion after closing the lid, instead of sleeping.
I don't think it's something that can be fixed by sending it in for repair. It's more of a firmware issue at most.
Another problem is when it is supposed to sleep on its own when the battery is at 0%. Initially, it just shutdown instead if sleeping. After the PMU resets and with a new battery, it doesn't do that any more but on occasion, it can be woken up as the battery is at 0% and if I continue to use it it will shutdown. That's another firmware issue in my opinion.

  • Blue Screen & mouse frozen after sleep

Problem: After my G5 PowerPC tower wakes up from sleep, the mouse will not work. After approx. 1 minute, my screen goes blue and the computer is frozen.
This all seemed to start immediately after I did the most recently iPhone software and iTunes update--don't know if its just a coincidence or not, but that's when it started.
I've done the Disk Utility fix and then a Install & Archive from the Install disk (OS 10.5), Nothing. Its still doing this crash ONLY after the computer wakes up from sleep.
Does this mean I have to do a complete fresh reinstall of the OS and start from scratch???
    H E L P ! ! ! ! ! !

I just bought the magic mouse and did the new update (Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0) for it to work on my machine. I also updated my iTunes at the same time. Everything seemed to work fine until my computer went to sleep. I woke the computer and my desktop showed up just fine, then about 5 seconds later I got the blue screen.
The only thing I have been able to do is just do a hard reset. I repaired my disk permissions and the same problem continues.
I tried the advice above (create a new user account) but that did not work.
    Any ideas...

  • MBP reboot after sleep when connected to thunderbolt screen

I work on a macbook pro retina connected to thunderbolt screen. I've set it up to go to sleep after 5 min and go to the lock the screen for security prupose.

  • MBP dead after sleep - SMC reset does not help

The MBP was used for watching a video in the car the other day, was put to sleep by closing the lid, and now it won't come on again.
When I press the button on the battery, two dots light up, so I guess there's enough battery left to start it. However, when I connect the power adaptor, the charging light never switvches to orange - it stays on green.
And a press on the power button dosen't do anything.
I tried an SMC reset without success.
    What now?
Please tell me there's other things to try?! I've recently had it for repair twice. Once because the keyboard connector beneath the battery needed to be reseated (I changed hard drive at the same time) at last week the NVIDIA video card problem had to be fixed (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377).

They took it back, changed the logic once more, and now it seems to work again. Hopefully a little bit longer than the 24 hours the previous one worked.
It seems like all programs runs unaffected although the whole logic board is changed. I believe that I would have had to reinstall everything if I were on a Windows machine, at least that's how it worked a few years ago.

  • Fireworks frozen after sleep Mac OSX 10.6

Whenever I return to Fireworks after the computer has been asleep, fireworks is busy doing something for between 5 and 15 mins before I can use it. I can force quit but sometimes I have unsaved changed or I'm unsure if there's anything I don't want to lose by forcing it to quit just so I can start working again.
Activity Monitor show fireworks alone is using between 99 and 103% of CPU usage.
    I don't have a slow machine, it's 2.66Ghz i7, with 8gb or RAM and and 250gb SSD.
This is the only CS5 app that seems to do this for me or it's just that I use afireworks a lot and don't notice the others. But it's gotten very frustrating as I've been able to search, then write this message on the forum while waiting and it's still not operable.
Anyone have any ideas other than the most obvious?
    Thanks much.

    It's missing background frameworks:
    Library not loaded:/library/frameworks/ilifepagelayout.framework/versions/a/ilifePageLayout
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Mail login problems after sleep (lion/MBP)

Sometimes after sleep, Mail will not load passwords from the keychain.  I have to force quit Mail and restart it once or twice -- then it functions normally again.  So, I know that the passwords are indeed saved and accessible, it's just that Mail doesn't find them after sleep.  Any ideas??  I have an active internet connection at these times, as I start up Safari first which loads any page just fine. Thanks in advance for any input!  (This problem started with a new MBP & Lion.

    Hello,
I share the same problems as you do with my MacBook Pro Late 2011.
For me this has happened only since I have upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8
I must say it has got a little better and does now go online fine after coming out of sleep once I applied the 10.8.2 update the other day.
I wonder if this is a bug relating to the different account types. I have a few email accounts running and like you these are, POP, IMAP and MS Exchange. Maybe if it had one account it's fine and that is the reason why not many people have complained about it?

  • MBP black Screen after Sleep Mode

My MBP goes to sleep but I get a black screen and it won't wake up after pressing keys or mouse. The only way to wake it up is to hold the power button down and restart. The white indicator light stays on and it sounds as if the computer is running, but nothing will wake it up. Can anyone help?

I have the same problem. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes when I open my computer after it has been sleeping, the screen will not come on. The only way to fix it is to either hard boot it, or press the power button, then enter, then press the power button again after a bit. The latter tells me that the computer wakes up, just not the screen as I can correctly shut down the computer with key strokes. Mine is an Early 2008 (non unibody) MBP.

  • Mbp running slow after sleep mode

My MBP runs extremely slow after sleep mode (closing lid). It seems like Safari will take up much RAM. But I use a memory freer which supposedly should solve the problem. So after all I am not sure what is the real cause and what could solve this.
BTW it runs normally after a reboot.
Mine is a mbp 13" refurb purchased in March, 2012.
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM

I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode.  It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly.  It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in.  I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates.  My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

  • MBP Changes color settings after sleep

After my computer goes to sleep, it has recently been waking up with a different color setting. Where the yellows are very dull and the screen has a blue hue. When I go to System Pref > Displays it changes back to normal without me clicking anything. It is getting very annoying, anyone know why it is doing this?
My computer is connected to a 24" LED cinema display which doesn't change colors on its own. The laptop has also done this without being connected to cinema display.
    Thanks guys

    This happens to me, also.
Just as you described - it happens when connected to an external display and when not connected.
It happens to me even without sleep; screensaver is enough.
I have my computer set to ask for a password after sleep/screensaver. Do you?
    charlie
P.S. I just did a search of the forums - this is apparently a very common problem, dating back at least to Leopard. I haven't seen a definitive fix for it yet.

  • Dark blue screen on MBP after sleep

    Hi there,
I have just purchased refurbrished MacBook Pro 15in 2.0Ghz Retina.
It acts strangely, when trying to awake it after sleep screen goes to dark blue colour for about 5-7sec and no responding.
    Any advices?

    Hi Wilcy,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You may find the advice and troubleshooting steps in this article helpful:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
First, see if this information applies:
Your computer is slow to wake from sleep
If you see a progress bar when you wake your computer from sleep, this is normal. The computer is waking from safe sleep.
If not, try the steps in the "Additional troubleshooting" section of OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake.

  • MBP Retina can't find USB3 drives after sleep

When waking the MBP-R from sleep, I get a message saying the externally powered USB3 HD was improperly ejected.  But the REAL problem is that I cannot then get the MBP-R to see the external HD without rebooting.  If I turn off power to the HD and disconnect it from the USB3 port, and then reconnect it to the USB3 port and turn the power back on again, the MBP-R still will not recognize it.  Nothing works unless I do a system reboot.
I've done 3 system updates since I received the machine. Each one was said to address USB3 issues but they've missed this one.  Anyone know of a fix for this?

I have all the same issues.  Not enjoying the new update and hoping for a software solution soon.  Restarting every piece of equipment and changing cables to direct hard wiring doesn't help on my setup, so... Hoping for the best.   In fact, mine all say they can't connect to the internet even though every other device in our household is connected, either wirelessly or via hard wire, without issue.
I can't stream audio or video.  It's awesome.  But, I'm sure Apple will fix it.  It's definitely a software bug to have so many people working fine and then WHAM...
There appear to be many others with the same issue on here.

  • Horizontal shifting bars on MBP 15 after disconnecting 24" LED cinema display and waking up from clamshell mode.

I use my MBP 15 (late 2011) with 24" Apple LED Cinema display in a clamshell mode. After disconnecting external display, and opening display, it shows horizontal shifted bars, so it becomes completely unusable. Have to hard reset laptop. Any hints on how to resolve this? Thanks.

Ok, more information for anyone that might care. The wake-up seems to be the familiar dark wake in order to go into hibernate mode. Except now, it's a death wake. Looking at the logs, I see that it happens exactly 70 minutes after sleeping, even though hibernatemode = 0 (which shouldn't hibernate at all!)
So my power settings look like this:
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    darkwakes            0
    gpuswitch            2
    disksleep            10
    sleep                10
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        0
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         2
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
standbymode is 70 minutes, what a coincidence. I'm going to try setting it to 0 and see what that does.
