17" MBP gets hot on left side

I have owned my mid 2009 17" MBP since 2009 when it was bought brand new. I am in the military and it has traveled with me to many countries and I have used it in my lap, on my chest and on desks. I know what is normal and what is not normal. I can tell you that recently the left side of my MBP has been getting hot around the escape key on the upper left. I know that is where it usually gets hot when doing intense computing but it is now getting hot when doing menial tasks like having Safari open or watching a video on Facebook or Youtube. I really don't multi task with it so I know there aren't any programs running in the background either.
I ran the apple hardware test and it came back with good results - nothing found. I wonder if a sensor or fan might be acting up. I use Hardware monitor and when I look at the temps most of them are in the 80s (F) except for CPU A temperature diode. It will run around 130. When I open up another window or another task the average temps can get to 100 and the CPU A gets up to 180.
I know this hasn't always been happening so I am wondering if anyone has any ideas. I plan on giving the laptop to my son for college and video editing and I want to fix this so he doesn't have to deal with the heat unless he is going computing crazy. I have already looked at some laptop cooling pads to help but I still want to fix this if possible.

I would contact applecare about this issue. a hot phone is not normal , a warm phone is.
but if you contact applecare that way you have a record of the issue incase it gets worse in the future.

  • Where does everyone's MBP get hot?

    All,
I have another similar post, so I apologize for this, but I am wondering where everyone notices the heat on their MBP the most? Bottom? Top? Above function keys?
The reason I ask is b/c I recently had my logic board replaced by a local authorized apple repair center. Just as an aside, the job was done in about 3 hours and I was only without my MBP for an afternoon. On the other side, this could be part of the problem . . .
Anyway, after the LB replacement, I have noticed a SUBSTANTIAL heat increase on the left side of my MBP. Specifically, the left palm rest gets considerably hotter than the right and the left speaker grill up by the ESC key and above the function keys is almost too hot to touch. I am a little concerned that something might not have been done right when the LB was replaced.

Nope, mine stays cool anywhere 'below' the keyboard unless I'm burning a DVD or CD at full speed (4x). I think if you didn't have this heat before you got your logic board replaced I would take it back to the fracking geniuses.
(I'm glad there's nothing wrong with my McBook Pro [geez it's the same quality as McDonalds, seems like] or else I would have to take it to the stupid geniuses everyday).
EDIT: have you tried resetting the PMU?

  • Fans Running Hard and MBP getting HOT!!!

When simply surfing the web and checking email, the fans kick on and the MBP bottom gets very hot...it seems to have just started doing this recently...is there something to fix this? Is there a setting? It is well ventilated.

This problem started on my MBP about two weeks ago.
I am only running Safari and the fans start running at 6000 rpm for about 10 or 15 mins then stops. It gets hot under the top left area. I mostly notice it running late at nite...
I contacted AppleCare and was transfered to a specialists. We went thru all the checks and did the PMU and PRAM reset with no change. Then the next day ran the Apple Hardware test from DVD one with no trouble found.
It was suggested that I send in the unit for repair but I am waiting (patiently) for a fix of my poor display (very grainy, light leakage, banding, etc) so am waiting to send it in.
This is also affecting my battery life. I was getting 4 hours under Safari usage but now only get 2.5 hrs on a brand new battery.
good luck all in a fix.

  • Click button getting soft on left side.

I have an imac less than a year old and the click button is getting non-responsive on the left side. The remainder of the bar works as usual. I don't use it for business only home use so I wouldn't say it gets over used. Please help.

HI Sun and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
An iMac that's less then a year old is under warranty. Any hardware issues should be reported to Apple before the warranty is up. Here is a link to find Apple stores and resellers:

  • MacBookPro 2.8Ghz intel Core i7 running so hot on left side it burns my wrist when I type.

Hi: I have a 17" macbook pro. Left side where mag safe is has always seemed too hot to me, but I've been told that's normal. After running for upwards to 5 hours, the heat on the left side near the touch pad becomes so hot that I can not rest my wrist on the machine. I've got the screen in proper position (45 degree angle), the back of machine is not blocked. It's on a hard surface (desk or lap desk--because it is too hot to just have on my lap. The mag safe is functioning (power box) often is very hot as well and it is just on floor, not covered by anything. I don't understand what causes this problem and how to fix it.

  • Screen "marks"appear when MBP gets hot

i know i started a thread yesterday but this is different, my MBP gets really hot when playing video games, to the point where the middle of the screen at the bottom gets really hot, it sometimes leaves "marks" in the form of a line and little mountain ranges of lighter than black colors at the bottom. sometimes it goes away but other times i can still see the line when there is a black background. im getting a cooling pad for sure on boxing day. hopefully i have not damaged the screen yet.

It is still under warranty, I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center.

  • MBP getting hot

    Hi
We have a number of MBP's and their associated power supply units, and have never noticed that either the computers or the psu's get very hot
However, recently it was noticed that a MBP (late 2009) was getting very hot.  We took it to the local Apple store where they opened it up and got rid of some dust, but could find no real cause for the issue.
I happened to be using it yesterday and touched the 85w power supply unit which was VERY hot.
I am wondering if something is happening to the MBP that is causing the psu to get hot, or that the PSU is going wrong and causing the computer to get warm.
    Anyone any suggesions/ideas?
    Thanks

  • Does your 2011 MBP i5 13" get hot?

I just got my i5 13" mbp 3 weeks ago.  During light browsing such as google, facebook, or researching little homework assignments, I've noticed that my mbp gets hot on the bottom.  I sometimes use it on my lap, but mostly on a desk.  I've researched this question many times and many people say it does get hot, but the question is how hot?  and what should the temperature be during light, normal, or extrenuous usage?  thanks for any input and any suggestions on how to fix the problems would be great.  Also, my girl's late 2009 13" c2d MBP doesnt get as hot as mine.
-backlit keyboard turned to bellow medium, screen brightness turned to middle setting. running on batteries.

My 15" MBP 15 Core i7 has the same problem. Spoke with AppleCare and tried resetting to power management unit and the PRAM; no improvement. Also tried reinstalling the 10.6.7 'early 2011 macbook pro' update - still no change.

  • My Computer Gets Hot To 90 C, Is It Because of my Case!?

Why does my computer get hot when I'm on Safari, Minecraft or any other iApps?

Temperature generated by your MBP is a function of the demands that are placed on the CPU/GPU.  I suggest that you do the following:
    Install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open ACTIVITY MONITOR to ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low.
When you MBP gets hot. post images of the both applications mentioned for inspection.
Note that 90°c is not lethal and under certain conditions normal.  In addition, the MBP has circuits that will shut it down if the temperature become too high.
    Ciao.

A simple 1 liner will do the trick. This question has been used answered many times in the forum but i rarely find this simple solution.

    V_AMT1 = '100.00'.
    V_AMT1 = -1 * V_AMT1.

  • Left side of Mabook Pro becoming hot

When I charge my new 2010 macbook pro 15 inch it becomes noticeably hot on the left side where as the right side is fine. Is this because the charger is plugged in on the left side. Is this abnormal?

[Look at Step 15|http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2010-Teardown /2212/2] and you will see that that is where the CPU and Nvidia GPU are. Those are the components that get the hottest in a computer.
Right now, at full load, my late 2010 MBP 15" has 90˚C i7 CPU, which is below the 105˚C max operating temperature according to [Intel|http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SLBPE].
Install [iStat Pro|http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro> (free widget) if you want to keep an eye on the temperatures inside your Mac.
If you are still worried, as many other people are, [SMC Fan Control|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049/smcfancontrol] will make your Mac's cooling fans run at a higher speed.

I bought Lion from App Store recently and installed it successfully on my MBP. After few days when I left my machine running Lion from morning till evening I see a thin green line on the left side of the screen. I tried searching the web and tried few options like restarting the machine, resetting NVRAM and doing Apple hardware test (By pressing D while the machine boots). The Apple hardware test did not detect any problem. The green line still exists.
Please suggest me how to get rid of green line.

    Hi Brent,
I took it to apple service center. They did some checks and found out that the display has gone bad and they replced it with new one.
Did you try connecting other display (may be Apple Display or Dell monitor) using an adapter?  In my case the Apple service center people tried doing it and the display was appearing just fine without any green line. So the fault was in my MBP display.
