17" mbp no longer sees a 802.11a Linksys router...

I have one of the early 17" MBP. It used to work with a old 802.11a (Linksys) router. Lately it doesn't see the router at all. I've reset the router and another Windows machine can see it fine. I didn't do anything funny other than apply patches and firmware upgrades. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Macbook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Maybe its helpful you to know that the 802.11a standard wasn't totally supported by Apple at the begining (read http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1465) so probably those patches did change something.
Have you tried different frequencies on the router?

  • Solaris 11 host no longer sees a ZyXEL wifi network router

This issue is on a Toshiba Tecra M10 running Oracle Solaris 11.1 SRU 0.5.11-0.175.1.0.0.24.2
The once functional wifi network iwh0 (net1) no longer sees a ZyXEL NBG-416N wifi network router.
The e1000g (net0) can connect to the router when direct connected via TP ethernet cable from the laptop wired ethernet port.
There are other wifi networks visible from iwh0 (net1) when the command 'dladm scan-wifi' is run.
When attempting to connect with the 'dladm connect-wifi' command (I know the command is good I recall it from the shell command history) .. I get "no wifi networks with the specified criteria are available"
The laptop is able to connect to one of the other wifi routers over this interface however not my own router (which appears to no longer be visible from Solaris 11.1).
I am able to connect to it from an HTC mobile phone and a Windows 7 laptop.
Removed wifi cache file /system/volatile/dladm/network-datalink-management:default.cache.0 and rebooted. No joy.
If I boot from the Solaris 11 DVD, I can still not see the expected wifi router.
At this point I am suspecting the ethernet address of the M10 iwh0 (net1) interface.
'dladm show-phys -m' lists the interface ethernet mac addresses (even if not plumbed).
Connected to the router (from alternative system, over wifi) and looked around. Noted the logs had a messages "possible DNS-rebind attack detected: a-0.19-*8d9zff4tq7njzcj.avts.mcafee.com" that seemed to start about the time I lost sight of the network? Can no longer say for sure as I restarted the router and it seems to have lost those log entries.
Contacted the ISP who provided the ADSL/router for use with their FTTC service offering - they are not aware of any 'protection mechanism' on the router that might mask a misbehaving mac-address.
Tried changing the mac-address on the iwh interface with 'dladm set-linkprop -p mac-address=06:05:04:03:02 net1' and ran 'dladm scan-wifi' without success (then reboot with 'init 5') resets to original but after reconfiguring again -still not available.
If anyone can help .. perhaps having seen something like this and solved it .. or even simply help with better troubleshooting, please advise.

Okay .. I changed the routers 'channel selection' from 13 to 7 and this wifi router network ESSID is again visible to the Solaris 11 instance. I expect the other OS's cater for this a little more elegantly?
    ~ # dladm show-linkprop net1 | grep -i channel
    net1     channel             r-   7            --           --
    ~ #
It seems the channel property wont be visible unless there is a connection (I suppose obviously).
I expect another router has moved into the radius close enough to interfere?

  • EA4500 - MBP Problem 802.11N / 802.11A

    Hi Guys,
I've been using the EA4500 for almost a month now and I'm loving it. Fast & stable, but I noticed one problem. My Macbook Pro is not connecting via 802.11N but instead it is using the 802.11A.
    screencapture:
I tried trouble shooting this by using my other router Linksys WRTt310n and I noticed that my MBP is conencting to the 802.11n.  So basically it's not the an APPLE or MBP problem.
Is there any setting I should be checking out?
Thank you very much in advance.

You just made my day!  after setting up the QoS and turning on the WMM. Look what just happened...
Thank you very much mate! But can you please explain what  does WMM got to do with my connection problem with the 802.11N network?
Thank you very much again guys!

  • Clone no longer sees MBP internal drive

When I boot up from a clone on an external drive, the internal drive of my MBP no longer appears in the Finder -
nor does it appear as a startup disk in System Preferences.
In fact, none of my clones are recognising the MBP any more.
The MBP drive is only 3 months old, and Apple branded, and all drives are formatted OS Extended (Journaled).
Everything was working perfectly until recently - without there being any changes to the setup as far as I know.
Any idea what’s happened, and how to fix it?
    It’s a mid-2009 MBP running 10.9.4.
(I originally posted this in the Mavericks forum, but maybe it's even more relevant here.)

Apple does not produce any drives on their own - so any "Apple branded" drive would be manufactured by a third-party.
Have you tried booting into your Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and using Disk Utility to Verify and, if needed, Repairing your internal drive? Does your machine boot with all of your clones as well as your internal drive, but does not show up on the Desktop when booted from a clone? Have you used Disk Utility to see if the machine actually 'sees' the internal drive?
    Call back,

  • Unstable Wireless Bridge Connection via 802.11a(Radio 1) of Aironet 1242

    Hi,
I'm going to setup up an AP 1242 in a remote area to support b/g client via a 802.11a bridge link (all using AP 1242).
Before the deployment, I tested the configuration in a lab environment. However, I found the bridge link will come up a while and suddenly gone. Resetting the root AP or the non-root AP cannot bring the connection up again. Sometimes, when I shutdown the b/g radio (radio 0) of the remote AP, the bridge link will be established again. Following is the log from the root AP.
    Thanks!

Thanks dmantill for reminding me to revisit the antenna and related stuff.
As the setup is in a lab environment, the APs are put on a work bench next to each other, therefore, the radio output power was lowered.
After adjusting the output powers, it works as expected.
    Thanks Surendra and dmantill.

  • 802.11b vs 802.11a & g

Hi there,   any one can give me some idea on the best practise about the choosing the WLAN 802.11 protocols.
I know that the in WLAN network, all device shares the same access point in half duplex, so using 11g, it would give us 45mbps to share than 11mbps (11b).  therefore, I would think it is good practitice to turn off 11b on all APs, but is there any disavantage by doing so?
also on the cisco Wireless Lan Controlller web interfarce,  Wireless --> 802.11a/n --> network, how to  setup the DATA RATES. by default the 1 to 5.5 mbps has been disalbed. 6 to 9 mbps are mandatory, then 12 to 54 mbps supported what is the difference and impact by changing those premeter.
    thanks.   roy

You should know what your clients before you embark in this activities.  There are still some clients, such as old laptops or USB adaptors to medical equipments to brand new hand-held bar code scanners, that will read nothing but 802.11b and on 1, 2 or 5.5 Mbps data rates.
The reason why these clients are still prevalent is because of the cost to purchase these wireless cards from storage houses.

  • 802.11A

Has anybody connected their MacBook Pro to an 802.11A router? The reason I ask is that currently my signal keeps on dropping out. I am using an Airport Extreme Base Station. The MacBook Pro wireless is much better then the Aluminum Powerbook which may be part of the problem. I am able to see more routers then before. Besides mine I see 2 Linksys Routers on channel 6, 1 Netgear Router on channel 11, 1 Unknown brand Router on channel 11 and a Microsoft Router on Channel 6. I have changed channels, turned off encription and tried Interference Robustness to no avail. I decided to connect to one of those Linksys Routers and no problems. So I am thinking that if I get a 802.11A Router I will not have any problem because the Frequency will be so much different then the others. PS I have not heard of anyone having any issues with the Airport Extreme Base Station and the MacBook Pro so I am inclined it is not a compatibility problem. Any thought on this issue would be appreciated.

I have both a Linksys WRT54g Wireless Router and a NetGear WGU624 A.B.G Router (set up as AP) on the same network. My CoreDuo MacMini correctly displays the network selections (both 802.11a and 802.11g) and allows you to switch dynamically between the networks. Make sure you have SSIDs set up differently so you can distinguish which is A and G network. Also iStumbler96 is a UniversalBinary and correctly displays all the channel information correctly.
The NetGear supports the Atheros 108Mbps link speed but Apple will only connect at a max of 54 Mbps while PCs with Atheros hardware connect at 108Mbps on both the A and B Network. No utility around yet that lets you unlock the capability to run at 108 Mbps on either the A or G network on the intel macs.
    Hopes this clarify.
PS: Apple denies the capability this functionality is there but apparently uses Atheros driver code for OSX which make the process transparent. It is probably more trouble to remove the code than leave it alone. Throughput and range on the A network seems much better, probably because QoS (Quality of Service) is built into the link layer code. You can purchase a compatible NetGear PC card WG511U (A/B/G) tri-mode card and use both on PCs and MACs (PBG4 at present). The only driver available now for 802.11a for MacOSX is from Orangeware ( www.orangeware.com ) and install on a G4 Powerbook, then select A,B, or G networks. Orangeware is working on drivers for the MacBookPro. but you would need a PCI Express card. I don't have a MBP, but I understand that it also uses the Atheros AR5424 miniPCI card just like the intel MacMini, so an external A/B/G card is not necessary.
Net of this story is that, Yes!!!, the intel macs have 802.11 a/b/g support built it and functioning.

  • AirportExpress 802.11b/g or 802.11a

    I have a quandary.
My Macbook and Imac and wii system are not friends when connecting to my Airport Express.
On settings 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible): My Wii and Imac works. Macbook dont.
On settings 802.11n (802.11a compatible): My Macbook works. The Wii and Imac dont.
Am i missing something. Is it the case im missing a simple setting? Please please help

    Oh, thanks, good to know.
I had everything running great for over a week at one point, but now the problem has started without anything provoking it.
So it looks like the problem is my Macbook not liking 802.11b/g. I know i sees the network and everything looks like it should, but it just wont work, however it will when i leave the room where the airport is.

  • AP 1232 support 802.11a/b/g at the same time ?

    Hi people,
I´m installing 3 AP 1232(dual), documentation says they support 802.11a/b/g, they support it at the same time or it is up the anntena ?
    Martin Cordero

It will support all three at the same time. So long as you have the A radio installed. As for b/g, you need to make sure that you have the B data rates enabled for them to work.

  • WAP321-E-K9/max RF output power of 802.11a?

Does the WAP 321-E-K9 (as 5GHZ frequency) supports the 802.11a?
If yes, please specify exactly the output power transmission in dBm?
Is it possible to have the 5GHZ frequency that not support the 802.11a? Because in the technical sheet of the WAP 321-E-K9 there is no specifications about the output power transmission (dBm) of the 802.11a standards ( only 802.11b/n/g are specified) ?

    Hi commercial7,
    I hope this helps:
From the product documentation on the WAP321-E-K9 it appears that the WAP only supports 802.11b/g/n protocols. 802.11a (5GHz) is a legacy protocol that was outdated with the release of 802.11n (2.4/5GHz). While WAPs that use 802.11n are backwards compatible (support 802.11a/b/g devices), WAPs that use 802.11a won't support devices that use newer protocols.
    According to the WAP321 Wireless-N documentation, transmitted output power: 802.11n @ HT20HT40, MCS15: 13 dBm
Also according to the WAP321 Wireless-N documentation, receiver sensitivity: 802.11n: 300 Mbps @ -64 dBm. Since 802.11n should support 802.11a, you may want to check the hardware specifics for the 802.11a device you are trying to connect with.
    Does this answer your question?

  • Airport Utility 6.3.2 says it does not support AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g)

My Airport utility is the latest version 6.3.2 but it does not support my AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g). I tried to download an earlier version but it wont let me.

Apple no longer supports these earlier base stations. If you wish to retain using an older 802.11g AirPort base station you will be left with only a few choices in order to administer it: 1) Use a Mac with an earlier OS X operating system, Snow Leopard or Leopard, or 2) Use a Windows XP or Windows 7 computer running AirPort Utility for Windows.

  • Does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

"You can use the AirPort Express to extend the signal provided by the new AirPort, but the Express will not extend "ac" wireless since it does not have that capability. The Express will extend an "n" wireless signal if that helps."
This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
    If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether
    Any thoughts?

  • Iphoto on ipad no longer sees my photostream since IOS 7 upgrade

iPhoto on my ipad no longer sees my photostream in the albums page of the iPhoto app since IOS 7 upgrade??
I can see my photostream and shared photostreams in the ordinary Apple photo app on the iPad. Prior to IOS 7, all these photostreams were visible in the iPhoto app's albums page. What has changed? Its' most annoying as I was relying on my photostream in the iPhoto app as my source of photos for my journals.
    Any suggestions please???

I've just had a long chat with Applecare in Colorado. Very helpful they were.
I can confirm that the "new" IOS 7 version of iPhoto app on all IOS devises does not support your my photostream nor any of your pre IOS 7 upgrade shared photostreams.
Any new post IOS 7 upgrade shared photostreams will be visible in the iphoto app. I have tested it and it works fine. But all your pre IOS 7 shared photostreams and existing my photostream remain invisible to post IOS 7 iPhoto app.
This "improvement" to iPhoto on IOS devises is now a lame duck. Why ! I'm now on the lookout for a better photo journalling app for my iPad.
