17" MBP Occasional video flickering and freezes

Having an occasional problem with video on my 17" MBP.  Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  It is a MacBookPro 3,1 according to it's hardware report and has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB video processor.  When the problem happens, rectangular blocks of video begin to appear on the screen, then the keyboard freezes (won't allow input).  Anybody else experienced this?

set old HD. If problem will gone - you have weakened power supply or internal power converters. Yours new HD draw more power during spinup or something - so voltage on internal bus lowers and memory or videocard freaks.
5.30 PM looks like a time when there begins a lot of load on city energy grid - so voltage in wall socket goes a bit unstable, it may also add to problem.
if problem is gone when you are on battery power - its power supply. If it persists or get worse when on battery - its internal power convertors.

  • MBP 13" Screen Flickers and Freezes After Upgrading HDD

    Hi There,
I have seen on here and a few other forums that people are having issues with graphics cards or overheating that is making the MBP screen flicker and freeze.
Mine has been fine until yesterday when I installed a new Seagte 1tb HDD. It works ok, but every now and then the screen starts to flicker, half of it goes black and the system freezes. Sometimes it's just for a few minutes, but sometimes I need to do a hard reset by holden the power button down for 5 seconds.
    Here are the details:
    MBP 5,5 13" (2008 I think - Can't remember)
    Boot ROM Version:
    MBP55.00AC.B03
      SMC Version (system):
    1.47f2
    Version 10.6.8
    2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
8gb 1067 Mhz DDR3 (Just upgraded, but before the hard drive and no issues)
    1TB Seagate Momentus SATA HDD
As mentioned, I upgraded the RAM a week or so ago and it has been running fine. I put the new hard drive in last night and after a few hours, the flickering started.
I cloned the hard drive using SuperDuper and it all started up fine.
So far, I have verified and repaired permissions, checked SMART status and run a SMART Utility diagnostic. All comes back ok.
I cleared the PRAM and installed smcfan control as another forum with similar issues said it was a overheating problem and running the fan control program should fix it. I did that at 8am this morning and it has run great all day. Come 5.30pm, the flickering started and then it froze.. GREAT!!!!
It's so frustrating, I was really looking forward to having my MBP upgraded and running fast again.
Any ideas or tips would be very welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

Why is my iPhone 6 Plus home screen flickering and freezing up?

    Try these steps as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and lock buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears
    2. Restore to factory settings:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    3. Get warranty service from Apple in the country where the phone was purchased

  • Flickering and Freezing Screen on MBP 17"

I was working on my MBP 17" and hooked up my external HD with a lot of files on it.  I was looking for an old document, when the computer screen had a strange flicker and then I pointed my cursor to one of the apps on the bar and the screen froze.  I tried force quitting and couldn't get the comptuer to respond.  I was finally able to turn the computer off and then took out the battery (which is brand new...purchased in December 2013).  When I restarted the computer, it looked like it was up and running as normal and then it froze again.  I repeated the same process and it came to the gray screen with the apple in the center and froze with the beach ball not spinning.  I turned it off again and decided to go and hook up computer to power supply.  It seemed to working better.  This time I got messages from Apple saying that my computer had shut down incorrectly (which is true because I did it twice).  I was able to finally get it back up and running as normal on the power supply.  I decided to unplug it as I write this post and nothing has happened yet.  I am still booking an appointment with the genius bar just in case.
Has anyone had a problem such as this?
    Please help.

    Then I'd…
    1) Try reinstalling WoW and try to keep as few preference/game files as you can. Granted you need to keep your character and game play files etc etc so just backup the lot and restore as required.
    2) Contact Blizzard and check their forums and see if they know anything about this.

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • HP2000 Notebook - video scrambles and freezes,

I have a HP 2000 notebook PC, product number E0P76UA#ABA
BIOS is F.34 -05/22/2013 with 8GB total memory.
The OS is windows 7 Professional -- Version    6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601 at the current patch and hotfix levels.
The problem that I am having that unexpectedly during use, the video scrambles to wher you can not read the screen (looks amost like the wrong frequency).  this if followed by three long beeps followed by two short beeps.  this audio error code is played three times and then the system locks.  The ONLY WAY TO RECOVER is to push and hold the Power off button until system shutd off and then re power on.  the notebook then functons normaly until it decides to repeat the problem.
Antivirus scans etc. come up with nothing.

    Hi @fa4313
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I understand that the video on your computer seems to be scrambling and then freezing after a period of time. I am happy to assist. From what you describe there may be a hardware fault, but we can try a few things first. Since it sounds like your computer will run for a period of time, it may partly be a heat issue.
As and FYI you can take a look at this which gives a short synopsis of the normal causes of beep codes.

Assuming that it is a heat problem, then you can try this process:

If dealing with heat does not help, then the problem is most likely a board related issue, and then I would recommend calling our technical support at 800-474-6836. • 24' 2.16ghz video issues and freezing w 10.5

I was running 10.5.x - I honestly forget where it was at version wise but it was fully updated as of Thursday the 25th of Feb. and I was getting many random horizontal "rainbow" lines in Safari (also updated to that day) and also the machine would totally lock up and need to be powered off via the power button and restarted. Also, I have an AOC 22" monitor on extended desktop and it would randomly dim like it was going to sleep and then wake up on it's own while I was working on it. I had a 1tb WD drive for almost 8 months and a fresh install as of Monday the 22nd of Feb so I doubt it was that but on a guess I swapped in my OEM 250gb drive with 10.4.11 on it and have had no issues since. I installed the widget for monitoring temps and my GPU temp with 10.5 was almost 62* C and running the same apps in 10.4 it is 50-51* C so maybe that is my issue? I was told to take it for repairs to an authorized Apple repair center BUT I can see this taking weeks to sort out and I have to run my whole life from this computer as I sell on Ebay and dread going back to Windows even for a short time. Anyone else experience this with this particular machine in 10.5? I was running 10.5 since I put in the 1tb drive with no issues up until then other than occasional horizontal lines in Safari, also I when it started locking up I was getting the same lines only thicker when playing a DVD as well. I do not push this machine as normally ALL I have running is Mail, Safari, Firefox and sometimes GarageSale and Iphoto but very rarely more than 3 of the above at one time. No gaming etc either.

I had this happen a few more times under 10.5 but it seems OK under 10.4 so I am wondering now if it is a hardware or software issue. I tried 10.5 fresh installs on 2 different drives and a fresh install of 10.4 on the original drive now in the machine so I do not think it is my install procedure and I did full updates on each as soon as install was done. I took a few pics and will post one to see if this looks like graphics/logic board issues or not. These were taken under 10.5, when this happened machine totally froze except cursor for the mouse was moving and visible. The only other action was spinning beach ball, had to hold the power button to shut it down and restart it. I had 3 apps open, Safari, Firefox and Mail so I was not exactly stressing the machine. This happens on BOTH the internal display as well as the external, the first pic is the external display, the rest the internal display.

  • My iPhone 4 camera will not come on the little icon to switch it from picture to video flickers and it will stay black? Help?

My iPhone camera has not being working, It was dropped and it would not turn on, I took it to a phone repair shop and he fixed it and said that the camera would work if I reset it on iTunes. I did that a couple of times and then I restored it and it still will not work... HELP?!?!

The camera has failed on the device, contact apple and see if they will cover it under warranty (If it is still in warranty). Also, apple does not cover physical damage to the device that you have caused unless you have apple care plus. Out of warranty replacements are 99 dollars for the iphone 4 i think.

  • Video feeds skip frames and freeze

On MLB and HBO video feeds, the video skips and freezes--this was not happening a few weeks ago--just started

    1) If your camera footage was in iPhoto, and iMovie found it, it is a supported camera. It sounds like the thumbnail creation process got interrupted.
    2) If these clips are not in iPhoto, but iMovie let you import them into an Event through File/Import, then they are compatible, but again, the thumbnail creation process may have been interrupted.
Assuming that 1) is true, I would recommend the following...
Go to your EVENT file under the iPhoto section of the Event list. Right click on a clip in the event, and select REVEAL IN FINDER. This will take you to your iPhoto library folder where the clip is. Copy the clip to your desktop, and change the name of the clip to something else, but leave the file extension the same. Import this changed file into iPhoto.
Close iMovie. Then reopen iMovie and let it build thumbnails for iPhoto.
Assuming that 2) is true, I would open the iMovie/iMovie Events/<event name> folder in the finder. Then I would delete the iMovie Cache and iMovie Thumbnails folders from the event, leaving the imported clips untouched. Then restart iMovie and let it build the thumbnails.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15 - Slow and Freezes

    Good Morning.
This is MBP is running slowly and freezes, particularly if watching video, but is sluggish even opening applications from finder.
The MBP was taken to a apple service provider with the complaint of very sluggish and a strange graphic issue (The graphics were garbled at times - there is a known issue with logic boards.) a picture of the graphics was provided.
The service provider stated that the HDD drive failed the SMART test but graphics passed his test. When questioned if he was comfortable that nothing was wrong with graphics based on picture he stated that he advised I take it to the apple store. Which I did. There the MBP passed both the graphics and HDD test. based on the photograph the no less than 3 geniuses agreed the logic board was bad, though it wasn't the "typical" failure. The genius bar was given the information about the apple service provider and slowness. All of that was entered into the comments.
The MBP was sent to apples repair depot where the logic board and magsafe board was replaced. and the MBP was returned with assurances that all was well.
Though the graphics issue has not reoccurred the speed is not any better and may be worse. (in excess of a minute fifteen boot, noticeable delay opening browsers or menus).
    Additonal information:
When provided to the apple service provider (and presumably the apple store) the computer contained the original 4gb ram. and had never been opened. The ram showing on this report is crucial, contains the mac logo and was installed because the service provider said 4gb was low, so when the computer returned and was still slow it was tried - it seems to have made no difference).
The HDD failed to secure erase the freespace on HDD 3 times prior to repair with the message "could not create temp file" after running overnight.
I've reset PRAM and SMC and run trough various "why is my mac slow" guides to no avail.
The anti virus was also added post repair to look for any thing malicious.
    Help please.

I'm aware of that recall it is the "known problem" I mentioned in the original post, however the linked story RE: Yosemite referenced retina MacBook Pros
There is an issue in retina MBPs and Yosemite:
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/
"Regardless of symptoms, the issue has been traced to switching to the discrete GPU from the integrated GPU.
    Read more: http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/#ixzz3YWcK80s9"
So I was not sure if this was discussing a separate issue, that is why I mentioned it was not a Retina.
"Does "disk warrior" report anything that the apple store test would not?"
The Apple Store would run the Apple System Diagnostic (ASD).
    Re:
    http://www.dannydullin.com/apple-service-diagnostic-asd-reference-list/
The trick when you take it to the Apple Store is to make your computer repeat the failure that you see. It actually would be a good idea to get it to fail just before your appointment. Don't shut it down just take it to them frozen.
Then you can hand the genius the MBP and say, "This is what happens."
Actually a suggestion of another senior member around here. I'd credit her if I could remember who it was.
They ran two test one was a video test and the other was a hard drive test "quick apple store" that said it "randomly checked disk" or something close to that.
I can only hope to get it to fail right before going. - only real problem is that considering the apple disclaimer about their responsibility for your data, there is absolutely no way they are getting it with our data on it. But if I can get it to fail I'll let them see it before wiping it... I mean the sluggishness is obvious so at least they can see that.
I do appreciate the ideas. There were a number of people there when I dropped it off the first time, one of them was on her third logic board. Another on the second.

If you use a FireWire audio interface, disconnect it and test again.

  • Macbook air video flickers full screen Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks I notice that the video flickers and the black bar at the top moves up and down when watching videos in full screen ; an example is the Jony Ive iPad air video or an iTunes movie.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I specifically said - "Thats not to say there isnt a single unit with a GPU/ monitor issue."
I have the new Air, thanks for asking. Have had roughly 20+ new 2013 Air thru my hands;...videos play fine on same.
Contact Apple and make an appt. if your specific Air is experiencing an issue.
Your warranty entitles you to fast service and resolution of any issue you make have with your Air notebook.
    Peace

  • Vario Laptop-Wndows 8.1 Monitor Flickers and Input is intermittent

My Sony Vario Laptop running on Windows 8.1 occasionally starts flickering and when I try and input data it only accepts occasionally. How do I troubleshoot this problem?

Does it flicker only within Windows or BIOS also?
Attach Sony Vaio Laptop to an external monitor and check if it does flicker there. If it doesn't it should be caused by the LCD panel it self. If that be the case
then you have to contact the authorised technician to get things done. May be a replacement will resolve the issue.
    Otherwise:
Update the display card driver to the latest version
You may need to run the display troubleshooting tool by going to
    Start -> Control Panel -> Troubleshooting ->
Appearance and Personalization -> Display Quality
You can also go for a System Restore. Select any restore point when there was no such issue.
