17" running at 1920x1200

my old eyes dont work well anymore i am a first time mac user and just purchased my first mac which is a macbook pro 17  looking for recommendation, external monitor .. lower resolution .. software options..
please be kind i have been around technology a very long time but learning all over again with the apple

Lowering the resolution is an option. I usually would not advise this because running at anything but the native resolution will result in a loss of quality (blurriness). However this may or may not be an issue for you depending on how bad your eyes are.
External monitor is also an option but if you bought a laptop it would suggest that you did not really want to be tied to a desk all the time. This leaves you with the same problem when you are away from the monitor.
I think the best option for you, if it is available, would be to return the purchase and instead get a 15" MacBook Pro. The extra pixels on the 17" screen compared to the 15" are for real estate and not screen quality, and if you were to use a 15" MacBook Pro instead, everything will be significantly larger. It would also appear clearer than if you ran 1440x900 on a screen without native 1440x900 resolution. For this reason be sure to get the 15" 1440x900 and not the high-res option.

  • MacBook Air won't run 27" 1920x1200 display

I have a 13-inch Mid 2011 MacBook Air. I have always used it with a 22-inch Dell 2209WA display which has a 1680x1050 resolution. This is done via a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, and a HDMI to DVI cable.
I just picked up a 27-inch Dell 2709W monitor which runs at 1920x1200. The monitor just won't display anything from my MacBook Air. I am using the same Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and have tried it with both an HDMI cable and the HDMI to DVI cable. The MacBook Air detects the display (it shows up as Dell 2709) but nothing shows on the monitor. The monitor goes into power save, then wakes up a second later, then back into power save etc. Just keeps cycling.
I tried plugging a different laptop into the monitor with an HDMI cable and it works perfectly.
Any ideas what's up? AFAIK the MBA should be able to run 1920x1200 resolution?

I've got similar display issues with the Cinema display 27 attached to my macbook air.  But I've also experienced it with the display attached to my macbook pro, and imac27" as well, so I don't think it has to do with the mac air.  Mine was still in the 1 year warranty period so I took it in for analysis and repair yesterday.  I'll post here what I they find out.
With mine I've also noticed when plugging the monitor into other computers I am required to also unplug the power and then plug it back in.  This action allows the monitor to work about 60% of the time, other times it just flashes in all four corners and then stays dark.
I would also say it is not software related, as I've used the monitor with a windows based gaming machine and it has suffered the same issues (going dark randomly, not working when switching connections, requiring unplugging/replugging of the power cord or in some cases requiring me to reboot the computer)
My recommendation is if it is under warranty take it back.  $1,000 monitors shouldn't have any of these type of quality issues (especially in less than one year).

  • Can I run two 1920x1200 monitors off NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT?

    Hi.
I have a Mac Pro 2006-2008 fitted with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB, it has two DVI outputs.
I'd like to attach to it two Dell U2410, 24" 1920x1200, but can't find final proof that the card will support extended desktop on two such screens.
    Thanks!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Yes, the 7300 GT will support two displays at 1920 x 1200.
It has one single link DVI and one dual link DVI
Support for digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels; dual-link DVI ports support up to 2560 by 1600 pixels
Extended desktop is supported with all OEM cards.

  • Mac mini mid-2011 display issues 1920x1200 on a HDMI monitor?

Just puchased a mac mini and am challenged by the display settings.  When I first powered it on using either a display port to HDMI or supplied hdmi to DVI (then the monitor's DVI to HDMI cable), the display is severly off center with issues seeing the system bar on top and icons on bottom.  So, once I was able to get to the System Panel, I found that it configured itself to 1920x1200.  I cannot get 1080p to center and 1080i has grainy text.  Does this mean I need another apple accessory, ie display port to vga?  Or is this an indicator that monitor and mac mini are incompatible?  Or is this an indicator that the mac mini has a lemon card?
(NOTE: I am downloading system updates to see if there is a firmware update. Thanks
    Proc - 2.5 i5
    Mem - 4 GB
    Graphics - Radeon 6630M
    OS - OX Lion 10.7.3
Monitor- LG L246WP  (3 hook ups: componet, vga, hdmi)

Your monitor has a native pixel resolution of 1920x1200.  There is no point in trying for 1080-p or -i.
I run two 1920x1200 monitors via HDMI (with passive cable adapters where necessary) and I use these choices:

  • Discovered: Method of running full screen on 13" MBP

Been running my MBP 13" with Logic recently and decided to look into a way of getting it full screen, and think i've found a solution.
Now, what i will be doing is instead of displaying the standard 1280x800 resolution, i will instead display a scaled 1920x1200 resolution via a piece of software called 'SwitchResX'.  Which is a systems preference.
It gives you much more screen space to work with, but at the cost of fonts are quite hard to read, being a scaled resolution, so if you're interested here are the steps:
    i. Download SwitchResX from here: http://www.madrau.com/download/latest/latest.html  Please note: it is shareware which means you can use it as much as you like, but it's requested that you pay if using over 10 days.  So please do so if it works for you, and you use it in future.
ii. Simply run the resulting download and it will install to your system preferences.
    Right, now here we go:
    1. Run SwitchResX from the system preferences window.
    2. Select 'Color LCD' (Which is your internal laptop screen) from the list on the left.
    3. Go to the custom resolutions tab, and press the plus button at the lower left to add a new custom resolution.
    4. From the pull down menu select 'Scaled resolution'.
    5. Then in the scale to boxes, enter 1920 and 1200 as displayed below, and press OK:
    6. The new resolution will be displayed as not saved, so simply press the apply button at the bottom right and it will make the changes to your mac - Will probably ask for a password to do so.
    7.  Restart OSX, and you will be running at 1920x1200 full screen.  You can swap between that and the standard 1280x800 modes at will in the standard System Prefs/Display control panels (Under the scale option)
I hope this helps some of you, not sure if the MBP will run hotter like that, it shouldn't be any different than running it through an external monitor at that kind of resolution i would hope.
If anyone foresee's any issues this could cause please post back, i've been running with it tonight and it's really handy being able to see more mix controls etc.

Very cool bit of clever work...
    Thanks ski!

  • Run FOUR 2560 x 1440 displays from W530?

    Hi all,
I have a setup most folks don't see every day, but it serves me well.  I find myself in need of updating it, though.
    CURRENT setup:
W530 laptop with 32GB and the NVidia Quadro K2000M card
    Sitting in a 4338 dock
Four (4) HP 24" LCD displays, each running at 1920x1200
Displays 1 & 2 are connected directly to the dock using the two DVI ports on it
    Displays 3 & 4 are connected to a Targus USB 3.0 adapter.
    What I want:
Four of these (or something similar) displays at the full 2560 x 1440 resolution
So...  I guess the first question is...  Can this be done with this laptop and this dock?  If so, the second question is...  What do I need?  I have scoured these forums and Google and found a great deal of info that is close, but nothing I can find has made me think anyone else is running 4 displays at this resolution.  I know my current Targus adapter won't support that resolution.  Help!
If the W530 won't do this, would a W540?  And would a W540 work with this dock?
I would greatly appreciate any help.
    Chris
PS.  I don't game.  This is purely for the office.  I just need a lotta screen real estate.  I will watch a video every now and then, but this is 99.9% for typical office use.
    Solved!

    Hi again, everyone!  Well...
It worked!  Two Samsungs connected directly to the dock, each via DP; then one each connected to a StarTech USB32DPPRO.  10,240 pixels of super high-definition glory.

  • External display at 1920x1200 causing audio dropouts

I've got my Macbook hooked up to a Samsung Syncmaster 245B+ 24" monitor running at 1920x1200 with the Macbook in clamshell mode, I bought the monitor a couple of weeks ago and ever since I've been having problems with audio dropouts, both with the onboard soundcard and my external Presonus Firefox Firewire audio interface.
It seems the CPU is being overloaded at random, usually when there is some kind of graphical happening in a web browser for example. If I load up a page with a lot of graphical elements on it, sometimes the audio cuts out for a few seconds and then comes back, even then it can come back distorted. I can usually force these dropouts by briskly resizing the browser window, which makes the CPU usage level increase somewhat and thus the audio cuts out.
I first of all put this down to the Macbook not being able to display at this resolution sufficiently, but I have seen no other complaints from people running a 24" external. What's even more concerning is that I can switch the external down to lower resolutions (ie 1024x640) and still get the audio dropouts, which should not be happening as the Macbooks own display runs higher than this and I never get a problem when using it that way.
I've tried creating a new user account and the problem persists. Tried repairing disk permissions (although I knew it would make no difference) to no avail. I suppose the next step would be a complete reinstall of Leopard, but obviously would like to avoid this.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be? Do you think it's just the Macbook in general not being able to handle this monitor or a specific problem with mine?
I hope I can get this sorted, it's really off putting having music dropouts while I am working...
    TIA,
    Alex

Next time is happens, try unplugging the external monitor, but only the external monitor. Leave everything else plugged in, including any peripherals, like the Personus and also any attached USB devices. If the problem persists, then start unplugging the peripherals one-by-one.
Generally a display should have no bearing on sound since the GPU (X3100) is completely separate from the CPU where sound is managed.
You haven't said anything about your MacBook's configuration but maybe there is an insufficient amount of RAM for the number of processes running. That's another possibility.

  • EX630 laptop - Nvidia 9300M GS - monitor flickers at 1920x1200

Recently, I bought an MSI-EX630 Laptop with NVIDIA SLI GeForce 9300M GS card from Newegg.
Never, ever, ever, buy a laptop that is from MSI or has NVIDIA inside that you cannot return, NEVER!
In short, my story is that when I hook up a secondary monitor it starts to flicker at resolutions of 1920x1200. This only happens when the laptop screen is active as well.  This happens no matter if I have a HDMI-to-DVI cable or a simple VGA cable.
    2) When I try to upgrade drivers, from official MSI site, everything goes blank (even when I'm on single-laptop-monitor configuration). Turns out, I have to go into Vista safe mode, to turn off the secondary video card, and use only the slow one, otherwise I get blank
    screen with the mouse only...
    3) with original drivers and configuration, single monitor, when I leave the laptop for 2-3 minutes, and then I try to move the mouse - I get a message saying to wait. I guess while the laptop was idle, the boost video card deactivated, and now to get active again I have to wait..
So, when I brought it to MSI Toronto for service, I got this response:
    Hi,
The resolution of EX630 is 1366x768. It is the highest it got. If you connect it to an external monitor, you only got 1366x768. It won’t run under 1920x1200 resolution.
We have tested your notebook and the dvi cable. They are all ok. Your computer will be sent out to you soon.
    Regards,
    Harry with MSI(Canada)
    (905)707-1880 ext 119
The good about MSI, is that you can go and talk in person with their service people. The bad, is that they cannot speak English and have very little idea about their products.
I told Harry, that there are two video cards in the laptop, and I suspect the secondary, faster card has issues.
Harry told me: "Who installed the second video card for you?"
Me: "This is NVIDIA SLI configuration, it comes with two cards, one built-in that is slower, and a secondary one, that boosts performance in games".
Harry then said that he has to ask his technician in Asia.. Harry later on told me that he has to bring the laptop to factory settings and whether I give permission to do that..
On the RMA sheet of paper that he asked me to sign, I specifically said that he can reformat the disk - no problem and that I've already used the MSI recovery disk to bring back everything as original..
But I guess better ask twice that sorry, can't blame them for that..
I asked to speak to a manager, but to no avail.. Harry suggested he'd ask his technician again..
I even put a youtube video to demonstrate to people the first problem that I have:
NVIDIA refuses to talk to me, because their product is in a laptop, so I have to talk to the laptop manufacturer..
So, I went to a store with 14-day return policy and bought another MSI - CR600, with 8200GS Nvidia card.
Needless to say, 1920x1200 works just fine with same cables and monitor. This MSI-CR600 laptop, at least I can return, and I'll do it.

I have a similar issue: external Samsung monitor worked fine on Vista, but I could not stand Vista. I put Win Xp Pro on... and I cannot get any signal out through the VGA port now. The monitor works fine (still), tested with two other latptops.
My suspicion is that the nVidia driver files, possibly the .INF, may need tweaking / replacement / etc.
    Any assistance appreciated.

  • How can I get 1920x1200 with an external display?

I'm trying to run my MacBook Pro on 10.6 on an HP L2335 LCD monitor using a MiniDisplay-to-VGA adaptor but I cannot get the monitor to run in 1920x1200. I've tried mirrored displays, extended displays, with the MBP open, closed, but I can't seem to get 1920x1200 to show up under display options which is causing the screen to appear slightly blurry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Since you have SRX installed, if you click on the "Export EDID" button you will get the monitor's display driver data in a readable text file. You can see if the HP lists the supported resolution or not in the driver.
You may need to purchase the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter in order to get it to work right. You should get a better picture from DVI as a bonus for going that route.

  • MBP 15" to 1920x1200 Monitor

Sorry for the neophyte question. Will the 15" Macbook Pro be able to run in 1920x1200 resolution when hooked up to an external monitor? Thanks in advance!!

    iLuveKetchup,
Keep in mind that the MBP's display will not work at anything above its own native resolution. While you can drive any external monitor at a higher resolution, your MBP's display will still only be 1440 X 900 (at most).
When an external display is used to "mirror" your MBP's Desktop, that external display will only be driven at 1440 X 900. When in "Extended Desktop" mode, however, the external dislpay can be driven at its native resolution, the MBP's display at its native resolution.

  • New MacBookPro 13" (early 2011) not properly displaying 1920x1200 on an external display

    Hi,
A week ago I got a new MacBookPro 13". Early 2011 model, the ones that now come with an Intel HD Graphics 3000 video card. I am connecting it to a Sun 24.1" LCD Monitor v4 (http://www.oracle.com/us/products/servers-storage/desktop-workstations/030743.ht m) through a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Supposedly the Sun monitor is running at 1920x1200 @ 60hz (with the MacBookPro at its original resolution of 1280x800).
The problem is that the image on the Sun monitor is not using the whole screen. The MacOs is 10.6.7 and I have downloaded all updates as of today (June 13 2011). I am *not* mirroring displays, of course.
Now, for the record, I still have my old MacBook 13", which the new one was supposed to replace and this problem is *not* present. 1920x1200 on the external Sun display uses all the screen. That laptop has an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M video card. Its MacOS is also 10.6.7, with all software updates as of today.
My current suspicion is the new MBP is somehow trying to force the aspect ratio of the external display to be that one of HD, but it is only a suspicion. Any help with this please? Is something known? Is it a feature or a defect of my laptop and I should try to get another one? If it is a feature, does it mean that I will not be able to fully use any of the three 24.1" Sun monitors that I have? (one at home, one on each of my two offices?)
    Thanks...
    Manuel

For some reason, using a dvi adapter instead of a vga one works fine.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2011) display artifacts HDMI to DVI at native res

    Hello,
I recently changed monitor configurations and in the process moved my Mac Mini (Mid 2011) to a HP LP2065 monitor.  The connection is made through the stock supplised HDMI to DVI adapter.   The monitor and the DVI cable work successfully with other machines.
What occurs is only certain colors, usually black,  result in the display being red and/or sparkling and/or static (like TV static) when the monitor is set at its native resolution of 1600x1200.
If I bump the resolution down to 1280x1024, or lower,  the black color returns and I see no display glitches.   If I bring the resolution back up to 1600x1200,  the display artifacts return.
A few google searches suggest I use a DisplayPort to DVI adapter instead as some monitors are "finicky".   Does anyone agree with that?  It seems peculiar to me -- why would a digital signal have analog-looking glitches?
Any ideas welcome.. thanks for reading

Your monitor has a native pixel resolution of 1920x1200.  There is no point in trying for 1080-p or -i.

  • Thunderbolt and MDP to VGA Adapter Compatibility Issue?

    Hi Veterans,
I know this topic have been asked a lot of times by different people who faced the issue in different way. However, i am unable to find an absolute solution to the problem i am facing currently.
My question is, can a 3rd party made, Mini Display Port to VGA adapter works on MBP & iMac that have mini display port and not on those that have thunderbolt port??
I have a 3rd party made, Mini Display Port to VGA adapter that i have tried on 3 apple PC / laptop,
A MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) which comes with Mini DispayPort, the adapter work with this laptop.
A iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) which comes with Mini Display Port, the adapter work with this PC too.
A MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) which comes with Thunderbolt port, the adapter does not work with this laptop. I have tried many solutions i can find on this forum and none helped.
The software is fully up-to-date as of 30 April 2013, running Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion).
Tried safe mode, does not helped.
Tried the boot up when monitor is already switched on procedure, does not helped.
In all cases, it was tested on the same external monitor. As my MBP was dual-booted using Bootcamp assistant 4.0, i also tried in windows-mode (windows 7) which didn't work too. In windows mode, the screen just keeps flickering while in mac-mode i get a light blue screen. In both cases, the external monitor shows nothing. The external monitor is a Compaq FP7317 monitor with native resolution 1280 x 1024 at 75.0 Hz.
All these trying have leave me very perplexed. From my research, the thunderbolt port is suppose to accept devices meant for mini display port. So how could an adapter that work on mini display ports, not work on a thunderbolt port? Can any expert enlighten me?

Problem solved. I picked up the MDP to VGA adapter and was able to use the monitors native res of 1920x1200 but the flicker and wavyness made it impossible to use. And yes the adapter had the current firmware. But what I discovered in the process was that in mirror mode I am unable to drive the monitor at optimum resolution. With that in mind I tried the MDP to HDMI adapter again, unchecking mirror mode, moving the Finder bar to the external display and SHAZAM. I have a rock solid display external display now running at 1920x1200 : )

  • Standard Preview size/quality Lightroom 1.1. (how and what)

I'm working on a Macbook pro, with hi-res 17" screen 1920x1200. In most manuals, tutorials etc. it says that you can "set the standard preview size fitting for your screen".
I'm looking for some more background info on the standard preview, to decide which setting to use(if somebody has other criteria to keep in mind please do say so):
    1) What is the difference in size of files for the different combination of options (pixel/quality). Does somebody have a list.
    2) What is the actual difference in the quality options
    3) In which modules is the preview size used (also in development and slide show?)
    4) Are they also used to generate the thumbnails from? If so, does a higher standard preview size reduce the performance in library mode because it as to shrink bigger files for these thumbnails?
    5) what happens if I would use the smaller, let's say 1440 preview and then decide to view the picture full-size, in library or slide show
    6) What would be the size (in pixels) on the normal main window in lightroom on my 1920x1200 screen. if it is about 1440 (might take that one)
Last question of course: What standard preview size / quality should I use on my 1920x1200 screen??
Thanks in advance for all your thoughts!

As to standard preview size and quality, try 1440 and 1680 and Med and High quality and see what you like best. You will probably choose 1680 size for your screen running at 1920x1200. That will let you run LR full screen where the image size will be close to the full size of your monitor. You can try 1440 too but I doubt that you will see any performance improvement. I have tried both sizes on my 1600x1200 monitor and I see no difference in quality or speed.
Try both Med and High quality and see if you notice any difference in your preview quality or speed. High will make your preview folders bigger which might be a factor if you have limited hard drive space.
Don't think preview size has anything to do with thumbs. Standard previews are separate from 1:1 previews so you can always zoom in and LR will generate a full size preview.
In short feel free to experiment with various settings in LR. Good way to learn the program and you will know what works best on your particular computer.

  • Triple Monitor setup for e9270t

I have two 24-inch monitors running at 1920x1200 on my e9270t with GTX260 (1792MB), W7 64-bit. I have an unused 23-inch monitor I'd like to use. I didn't think I could just slap any old video card in. Recommendations?
This is not a gaming rig, I just like lots of real estate for surfing, debugging, etc.
    Thanks.

I called HP and asked if they had a three monitor set up, and was told yes they could customize one.  Told HP that I am a Mac person and am new to the PC world.  Had never run more than one monitor, but that the software I need to run takes three monitors and likes PC's better. Told them the ram, speed, etc that I needed to run, along with the 3 monitors.  They said they could easily provide a system to do that.  I asked it directions for hook up come with the system, and was told it's easy, you will be able to easily tell which hooks to what.  It will be out of the boxes and hooked up in no time.  It's easy. All the parts will be there and since you know computers, even though a different platform, it will be easy, you can do it.
Well, not that easy! Or I am a total idiot.  Not a good intoduction to the PC world!!!!  Gee, with Macs all the parts come in one shipment and ALL the pieces are there and all the cables are there and even easy to follow directions come with...All seems to be not so with HP!!!   Shipment after shipment came and was piled into one corner until the final box, the cpu arrived.
The ports on the back of the monitors and ports on the ATI Radeon HD 5570 2GB DDR2 graphics card are as follows.  I have managed to hook DVI to DVI and HDMI to HDMI and have two monitors up and running.  Now the third is the pain in the.....  It's been over a week of headache.  How do I hook them up?  5 or 6 calls now to HP tech support and it's not on their screen so they don't know.  Nice!!!!  That's why I am asking for more expert help.  You guys.  If I can't get this resolved in a day or two, the whole system is going back to HP and I will never ever ever ever use HP again, ever!!!
The back of each HP monitor (2 are 2311z and 1 is 2310e) has three ports..VGA (blue), DVI-D (white), and HDMI (black)
The graphics card has three ports.. DVI (white), HDMI (black), and DP   There is an adapter for VGA but is doesn't seem to fit into the DP port.  Nothing they gave me fits into the DP port.  I have just come back from both Office Max and Office Depot and they don't have any cables or adaptors with a DP port. I have absolutely no clue.  All I know is that I was promised it would be easy to set up and all the parts would be here, and it would run three monitors!
HP put in this GC based on my asking for a working three monitor system, so at this point I presume that this card will handle three monitors.(gee, I guess that's a lot to presume though)  That's what HP reads off their screen. (they can read and are polite, just don't know anything)  No one there at HP seems to have actually hooded up three monitors before.
Help me know how to hood up this mess and get it working, please.
More and more frustrated every day, guess it shows how much I love HP at this point!!
(And the jerk at HP who gave me this cpu with the speaker setting deep within the software turned off just isn't funny!  No not the mute and not the volume but the actual speaker on and off that controls the jacks was set to off in the software....that took a week to find and fix.  And of course, it wasn't on their screen, so HP tech support couldn't help!  It was only by accident I found that setting!)   So far I think I'm doing quite well for a Mac person.
OK, sorry, back to the point..how do I hook up the GC to the third monitor and get it to work?
    Deb
