1702i access point presales questions

I am trying to clarify the capabilities of this device before purchase. One of the points of confusion is that the configuration guide applies to the 3700 series, the 2700 series, and the 1700 series. If there is a more appropriate  manual to use than the "Cisco IOS Configuration Guide for Autonomous Cisco Aironet Access Points" for the 1702i, then that would be useful information.
SSIDs: The manual indicates that the access points are capable of 16 SSIDs running simultaneously, but it doesn't make any distinctions between each of the series. Can I assume the 1702i is capable of 16 SSIDs, and 17 VLANs, like the WAP371?
DHCP server capabilities: P 5-25 of the manual shows how to use the internal DHCP server capabilities of the unit, but it is not clear to me how many instances, or pools, I can make. Am I limited to only one set, applied to one subnet, or can I define a different pool and subnet for each of the 16 SSIDs?
Specific model: The manual refers to the 1700i, but it looks like the model available is the 1702i. Are there any differences in the 1702i version?

"you will also see what access points that is supported on": My point was that the configuration guide did not say whether 16 SSIDs were supported on some or all of the series. That was my reason for asking the question (page 7-2 of the manual)
"The data sheet of the APs of the comparison guide will show you the feature difference of the access point": You must be looking at a different data sheet than I have been able to find:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/aironet-1700-series/datasheet-c78-732347.html
a search for "SSID" on the page had no hits.
also the comparison between 1700, 2700, and 3700 series showed no hits for SSID:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/wireless/buyers-guide.html#~indoorac,
"DHCP is strictly for that access point and it's always prefered to use a true dhcp server and not the access point itself."
It sounds like you may have misunderstood my question. I'm asking whether the DHCP server capability can assign a different IP pool for each SSID. The "Understanding Multiple SSIDs" section on P 7-2 shows that a different VLAN may be specified for each different SSID, but I can't tell from the "Setting up the DHCP Server" section on P 5-24, whether this can be done for different IP address pools, or just for one.
For example:
The SSID "InterEquipment" would use VLAN 2, and the subnet 192.168.2.0
The SSID "Staff" would use VLAN 3 and use the subnet 192.168.3.0
The SSID "Guest" would use VLAN 4 and use the subnet 192.168.4.0
Could the 1702i act as the DHCP server for all of these SSID/Vlan/subnet combinations, or just one of them?
Concerning your comment "...it's always preferred to use a true dhcp server and not the access point itself." , what is it about the access point that makes it not a "true dhcp server", and why is it "preferred" to use something else?

  • Access Points Joining Random WLC

My environment contains 4 seperate controllers.  1 controller in the datacenter which remote offices use with HREAP and discover this WLC using DNS  We will call this Controller WLC1.  2 more controllers (WLC 2 and WLC 3) in the corporate headquarters to support >40 access points in a N+1 configuration and finally an anchor controller which doesnt matter in this post.
What I am experiencing is Access points in the Corporate office are using DHCP option 43 to discover the WLC2. every night or after long periods of time a random number of my access points are either rebooting or most likely sleeping.  Then are attaching them selves to WLC 1 which is in the datacenter and is not supporting DHCP from that location which to clients make the wireless network seem to be down.
I think that with using a hybrid of DHCP and DNS is partly my issue but it shouldnt be. I have primed all the Access point to look at primary controller WLC1 and secondary controller WLC2 both by name and using the IP address of the respective management ports.
Can there be any explaination for this and why this seems to be so random?
    WLCs are 5508
    Corporate Access points are 1142
    ***EDIT
After some more investigation this isnt completely random rebooting the access points in question are connected to a new 4506-E chassis with the Sup 6-E while the other access points are connected to a 6509-E.. not sure how much this matters but I am seeing in the access point logs that about every 2-3 hours they are accessing DHCP again and sometime not successfully.  Is there some EnergyWise or power savings happening on the 4500 possibly??

I understand that all and here is a screen shot (see attached) of an ap that was on WLC 2 last night at midnight when i wrote this orginally and now how jumped to WLC 2..  The major issue here is that WLC 1 does not give out DHCP because it is used for HREAP and remote office that have other local DHCP servers.
    I am running code 6.0.199.4
Now yes all controllers WLC1,2,and3 are in the same mobilty group.  Maybe I should move the WLC1 out of the mobility group and that might solve the issue.  Here is a log too.  See timing is 3 hours and then its trying to find another controller.  I see a retransmission count exceeded here. What can cause that?  I have 4 port LAG configured on both WLC2 and WLC3 and they are both on seperate 6500 switches.  This access point is on a seperate floor connected to a 4500 with uplink to each of the 6500's

  • Question about using "dumb terminals" for multiple access points

For both home and a small busniess setting I have been trying to find info about the possibility of using some form of dumb terminal to provide multimple acces points to a single computer rather than a network of multiple computers.
I would like to use my LCD TVs, (which have AV and PC inputs) as monitors. I am going to purchase a new mac soon, and it seems it would make sense to spend more on 1 mac with more capability rather than 5 mac-minis (yes, I am trying to have 5 access points, with one one mac).
I have CAT5 running to all the locations I want to use, I also have airport.
For the most part I'm expecting only one user at a time, but occasional two. OS X is multi user, but can it support simultaneous users?
I have searched the discussions/forums and some google searching. Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions. But, I can't imagine that I am the only person who has thought of this.
If you have any thoughts or suggesting for further searching I would appreciate it. Thanks

On each of these 'dumb terminals' I assume you are looking to access the complete Mac desktop from the central Mac?
    Unfortunately, this can't be done.
In the past, the setup you describe first was used on mainframes where each end node was a dumb terminal. But it was just text.
Next came X11 which does mostly what you are asking about, but each end node is basically a full computer in itself. You can remotely log into a central server and get a complete desktop session. This would take using a central computer that is running full X-Windows and then you'd need a PC running Linux, or running Windows and a X-Terminal package like Exceed or a Mac with X11 installed (not sure if you can make the Mac X11 do a full-blown desktop X session.) Note that as the central server, you'd need a computer running an OS with full-blown X-Windows (Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, etc.) -- OS X is UNIX but it doesn't run full X-Windows as its window manager.
Finally, there is what are called 'thin clients' ... a good example is Sun Microsystems' SunRay... it's enough hardware on the client side to provide display, keyboard and mouse. They boot off a central Sun Solaris server and work just like X-Windows clients. The difference here is that the SunRay unit can't work on its own; it has no disk, and has to boot from the SunRay server.
And of course there's Windows Terminal Services, which lets you do the same thing with Windows. I think that takes Windows Server edition software on the central computer, and then a regular PC as a client.
Sounds like your only option is to use Mac minis as you suggest. But then there's no need for a central computer to share, obviously.

There is no way to tell your MacBook which access point to use. Since they all have the same SSID, they are seen as the same seamless network.

  • Design question: Access points and controller Logical/Physical placement

    Background:
We have an MPLS (layer 3) network 4 offices and a Datacenter:
We are planning to install about 10 Access Points(3600 series) per office and have a controller(5508 series) in the Datacenter.
    Questions:
1- Is this design possible, in other words, just one controller centralizing all Access point traffic in one controller in the Datacenter?
2- We would like to accomplish this in two phases:
A- install access points without controller handling authentication thru microsoft IAS servers (current configuration with 1200 series)
B- Deploy wireless Controller in Datacenter and start migrating orphan APs to Controllers one office at a time
I'll appreciate any advice , comments and suggestions to the the outlined plan/design
    Thanks
    Juan

1- Is this design possible, in other words, just one controller centralizing all Access point traffic in one controller in the Datacenter?
Yes... depending on the bandwidth you can either have the APs in local mode which tunnels all traffic back to the WLC or you configure the AP's in FlexConnect and place the traffic locally in each site.
2- We would like to accomplish this in two phases:
A- install access points without controller handling authentication thru microsoft IAS servers (current configuration with 1200 series)
B- Deploy wireless Controller in Datacenter and start migrating orphan APs to Controllers one office at a time
I don't know what you are trying to accomplish here, but if you are running new cables and replacing all the AP's, you should bring up the WLC in the DC and connect all the AP's but leave the AP as admin down until your ready to cutover.  You can still use the IAS server for radius, just need to create a AAA client on the IAS for the WLC.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Question about Access Point

    Hello
In my work, we have two WAP4410N Wireless-N Access Point with Power Over Ethernet, but ¿how many users support each access point? And, somebody knows how I can configure the two access point to be viewed as one in all laptops? Normally, the laptops found access point 1 and acces point 2 but, somebody says me I can configure them as if they are one.
    Thanks

    Eliana,
The rule of thumb is a typical Ap can handle 20 users each, but the actual capacity could be more or less, alot of it depends on the traffic the users are generating and the bands/protocols.
for example if you are using 802.11g @ 54mbps, in reality your getting roughly 36 mbps of actual throughput, so then you have 20 users each using 100k of bandwidth which is about 2mb of traffic, you could handle more, but if you have 10 users that are pulling 1.5mbps then your cumlative traffic is 15mbps; so load is traffic dependant.  Retries and other issues can affect this as well but are hard to calculate.
Also make sure the 2 access points you setup are on different channels.
Null or limited connectivity?? do you mean low signal strength or no network access?
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail for Exchange - Access Point question

    Hello,
When setting up Mail for Exchange, you need to input the Access Point.  I cannot find an option to select "Ask for Access Point" or something along that line.
I use wireless access points and when I go from one spot to another I have to change my settings just to sync.
Does anyone know of an option, if not how could I file for a feature request?

The specific problem can be resolved. How did you hard reset your phone? You should hard reset your phone (some key combination which I cannot remember, press four keys simultaneously). Then format mass memory. Reinstall the firmware. Otherwise let Nokia Care reflash your phone. I had issues with freezes when I hung up a call, but that was resolved when Nokia Care reflashed my phone.
My phone is currently broken, so I cannot help you further.

  • MSI 180 wireless LAN question (Cant connect to my linksys access point)

    Hi all,
This is my first post, I couldn't find the answer, hope I am not double posting:)
I just bought myself a nice barebone MEGA 180 today together with 512Mb of memory, an Athlon XP 3000 and some other stuff.. Its up and running almost nicely now:)
The thing I cant seem to figure out is how to get my wireless network going. I've installed the driver but within my network setup I can't seem to set the security correctly. It can find my access point but it wont allow me to set the security the way I want. I use WPA Pre-shared Key with TKIP but the standard windows XP network stuff (which seems to be used here) only allows me to use normal WEP..
I had this problem with other computers aswell where the standard windows functionality just dont cut it but installing the drivers that came with those cards seem to fix the whole problem as they bypassed the standard XP stuff..
Is something similar needed for the 180?
Hope someone can help me out here, I dont want to go changing my network back to WEP.

would it be a hassle to convert to WEP encryption? at least just to see if that works?
have you looked for any updated drivers at www.msi.com.tw?

  • Some Question About Access point of the WRT54G

How many devices can the access point of the WRT 54G support?
I am looking at hooking up one Wii, 2 laptops and a Nintendo DS will this WRT 54G be able to handle that or will I need other devices.

Not sure how many wireless devices the WRT54G can handle.  Most AP's depending on the amount of traffic is around 30 or so.  Here is a link to the web site with the info for the WRT54G.

  • Linksys Wireless-B Router & Access Point question

Ok, I have a Linksys wireless B router (cant remember the model name off of the top of my head) and it connected to a desktop that I have.  I just purchased a Buffalo Wireless-G MIMO router which has the ability to act as an access point.  I was wondering if I set the Wireless-B router up to my desktop where my modem is, and then turn on the Access Point feature with my Buffalo router, would the two brands work together or no?  Also, if they did work and the Buffalo router acted as an access point would I be able to connect my PS3 via one of the ethernet port on the back of the Buffalo access point?  Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
I just purchased this Buffalo router after returning the Linksys Wireless-G with SpeedBooster and having numerous problems with my Verizon DSL (Westell 6100 modem).

Yes you can.  Here is a LINK to use as a reference.  The only thing you will run into is the routers IP's may be different so make sure they are in the same range.  Example router 1:192.168.1.1  and router 2:192.168.1.2 but it may vary depending on what you want your private IP range to be.
The router you want to set as a AP make sure it has the latest firmware and has the SSID/security all set up.  Make sure the IP for the router is set then disable the DHCP.  Then connect router 1 via numbered port to the number 1 port of the second router.

i tried 4 more different ADSL and different  IP range ADSL model showing same.
so please advice on this matter ASAP.

My name Eric Moyers. I am an Engineer in the Small Business Support Center.
I am sorry that no one has responded before now. What is the router that you are trying to repeat?
What were the steps you went through to do this?
According to the Admin Guide for the WAP4410N it will only repeat the WRVS4400N and another WAP4410N.

  • Can't HP Officejet pro 8100 do wifi access point?

Yesterday my HP Officejet pro 8100 arrived and I try to connect via wifi. I thinked that It need a infrastructure access point to print via wifi.
When I powered on the printer I osserved that It create an access point autonomously with SSID: HP-Setup-7A-Officejet Pro, with IPv4 address server, etc...
I was very happy and I printed a page with my smartphone samsung s4 connected directly with printer access point (not wifi direct but standard wifi).
Today no changed occurred but I can't use printer with its own access point, but only with an external wifi access point.
Someone can help me, please? It could be an hardware problem?
    Thanks,
    Luca
P.S. in web server I checked that "access point connectivity" (Punto di accesso wireless connettività in Italian) is checked.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello lucait
To print via WiFi you need to have a wireless router setup. Once you have the wireless router setup correctly you will have a SSID and Wepkey that will enable you to add devices to your network. The network will allow all your devices to communicate not just with each other but with the internet. At the moment your printer was not put in a network so instead of broadcasting on a network it is broadcasting on it's own network called HP-Setup-7A-Officejet Pro which is only good for a short period of time to allow you to setup your wireless. I am going to assume you have a wireless network and you are just needing assistance getting the printer setup on that network.
To set your printer up on a network you will need to reset your network defaults so your printer begins to broadcast that HP-Setup-7A-Officejet Pro network again. You can do this buy following the steps on the HP Support document Resetting the Network Settings. Once you have done this you can begin to install the software that came with your printer on your computer. You want to set the printer up wirelessly when the option arrives. The software should configure your printers wireless for you and put it on the network. Once completed you should be able to access your printer from all your devices as long as they are on the network.

  • How to use Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router(access point...

Hi guys hope you can help; I am trying to add my Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router (ie an access point) to my home network and struggling.
What am I trying to achieve.
I have a fully functioning home network which is working great but the wireless range does not extend to the room above my garage, some distance away from the main house. I currently service it with an Ethernet link from my E4200 router, via the mains wiring, to link to a PS3 there. But I want to extend this to have a wireless network in the remote room so I can link multiple devices - rather than spend more money, deploying a 2nd router which I already have  is preferable.
    What have I got.
I have a Linksys E4200 router (nice piece of kit) attached to my ADSL line via a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router set to  “modem only” mode (I was using a DSL modem until yesterday but that went AWOL and digging out the Belkin router I saw that it had a modem only function – and it/they worked first time )
All of my gear in the house is attached wirelessly to the E4200 which is delivering circa 11.5mbps from a maximum of 12.5mbps for the line measured by BT onsite. So  all is  fine there.
What have I done to try and use the HH3
Linked an Ethernet cable between one of the Ethernet ports on the E4200 to a mains plug.
Linked an Ethernet cable from a mains plug to one of the Ethernet ports on the HH3 router.
Ie as the PS3 was linked.
    3.  Switched on the HH3 router: the power light is solid blue, the wireless light is solid blue, the broadband light is off
    4. Connected my laptop to the HH3 network and loading up a web page on IE9 displays a web page from bthomehub.home/etc etc with title BT Home Hub and a message “Can’t connect to Broadband”. It is the start of a self- diagnostic routine. Answering all the questions I eventually get a Home Hub Administrative Home Page displayed.
Is there a quicker way of getting to this admin page??
    5.  I switched off DHCP
I changed the IP address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.200 as this seems to be what the other threads on this subject did.
When I went to apply the change a message came up telling me that I might not be able to access the HH3. I ploughed on disregarding this and needless to say I could not then access the HH3 via the web interface and trying to access a web site nothing happened.
    6.  I did a hardware reset on the HH3
    7. Going through the motions again, when I got to the admin pages again, I switched off DHCP and this time left the IP address alone, ie 192.168.1.254.
When I went to apply this  I got the message
“After changing these settings you will need to renew the IP address of all devices connecting to your BT Home Hub. Please follow the instructions provided with your devices.”
I applied the change – but have not yet done any fooling around with IP addresses on my laptop because I don’t want to start mucking around with my laptop
I then tried to access a website, and failed, but on this occasion rather than nothing happening, the Home Hub website came up  again displaying the error message page.
And that is where I stand. All looks so easy when reading other threads on this and other forums but it is not working for me.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
The IP settings on the E4200 are
    IP  192.168.1.1
    Range  192.168.1.100  to 192.168.1.149
Also connection type on the E4200 is POE not POA – as far as I  recall that is what it needed to be to connect to the DSL modem and work.

    Thanks for the speedy reply!
I have actually came across this page before - I seem to hit a snag when I connect the repeater hub (my HH3).  As outlined, I have at all times kept the repeater hub connected via ehternet into one of the regular LAN ports to my main HH5.
But when I connect my laptop to the repeat hub (HH3), I am actually connected to the internet somehow (I assuem using the HH5 network) but under my network connections it says I am connected to the HH3.  As a result, when I go to the homehub settings page 192.168.1.254, it brings me to the main HH5 settings page and not the repeater HH3.
According to the instructions it says I should "Ignore the not connected page", but I am connected and I cant seem to alter any of the settings on my HH3 while it is connected to the HH5.
    Any other pointers?
    Thanks!

  • Single access point with multiple ssids and single channel possible?

    Hi everybody.
    I have this silly question.
Let say we have three vlans, vlan1,2,3  and they are mapped to wlans as follows:
    Vlan 1  ssid1
    Vlan 2 ssid2
    Vlan3 ssid 3
                      AP --------trunk------Switchted network.
Our Ap  has mobile devices in three wlans, i.e ssid1ssid2 and ssid3
Since AP uses half duplex mode,  mobile devices need positive ack from ap  before they can send data,  therefore once channel let say channel 3( assuming 802.11b is used) can be shared by all mobile devices in three wlans.
    Is  my understanding correct?
Thanks and have a great weekend.

    Hii ,
Yes ,that is pretty much possible as suggested by other experts on board. Depending on your access point you will have 1 (2.4 GHz) or  both 2.4 & 5GHz radios.
You can configure multiple SSIDs (up to 16 ) known as MBSSID mode in autonomous environment. In Controller based architecture you can configure up to 512 WLAN (SSID) and transmit any 16 of them per AP (using AP group feature). However , it is recommended to keep multiple SSID count below 8 as for each SSID separate beacon will be sent on air which consumes more air time.
    Hope this helps
    Thanks
    Vinay
