18 apps have disappeared within minutes. AppStore says 'Open' when I try to redownload

While some apps were downloading I locked my phone. Less than 5 minutes later I unlocked it to check the status of the downloads and noticed 18 apps (the ones downloading and ones I've had for quite some time) had vanished. I've checked my phone thoroughly and there is no trace of them except in the Settings/General/About it has the app count. According to that the apps are still there. I tried to redownload them but according to the AppStore I already have the apps. It just says 'OPEN'. When I press it nothing happens.
It's as if they are there but invisible. I've adjusted no settings for weeks (including Restrictions).

If it says "Open" in the app store they are on your phone somewhere, either on a different page of the Home screen or in folders. Search for one of them by swiping down from the middle of the screen, and enter the name of one of the apps, then tap Search. If the app is in a folder the name of the folder will be displayed; if it is not in a folder it must be on one of the home screen pages.
If you still can't find them start with a reboot (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears. And if that fails Restore the phone using iTunes.

If you are completely confident that you didn't hide it, then you purchased those with different apple id. If you completely confident that you purchases with same apple id then you have hidden it. One of the other or you are speaking about a miracle. While miracles are possible they are not very likely. Remember

No, individual apps cannot be restored.

They most likely got pushed to another page. Try swiping all the way from righ to left.
Also folders have mutiple pages now (used to hold 16 now only 9 per page) too. If the app was in a folder, go to that folder and try swiping to a different page inside the folder.
If not check your restrictions:
Settings > General > Restrictions
Can you find it by searching (swipe down from the middle of the screen)?
If so does it say something on the right sid of the app in the search box, if so that is the folder it is in.

ok well like lllaass said, most apps require 4.3 or later iOS software. chances are since the apps worked before, the apps themselves got updated and will no longer work with your software version.

My apps have disappeared from purchase history in Mac App Store. Anyone else had this problem?

I've raised a support ticket with Apple but that's been completely useless. They told me to see if the app is still on my iPod (thanks for reading the question!) and kept telling me how to fix my iTunes login. I'm still waiting for a solution.
Anyway, I've signed in and out of the Mac App Store several times, I've signed in and out of iTunes several times, all with no luck.
Anyone else had this issue?

You can use the Search field in iOS 7 to find out if your apps are installed on your phone somewhere that maybe you haven't noticed, and I have linked some information about that right here:

Does your Cloud subscription properly show on your account page?

You can purchase Lion from the Mac App Store. You will need to meet the requirements for Lion, but the Mac App Store will tell you whether your Mac is capable of running Lion or not.

How do I get my library from my phone to my new computer? I no longer have access to the old computer and when I try to sync my music, it says it will erase everything on my phone. My itunes library is not showing up when I sign into the new computer. Its not even showing any downloads.

The iphone is not a backup/storage device. It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which you sync.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone: File>Transfer Purchases.
