19:6 clips into a 4:3 project

Hi
I've trawled the forum for info regarding this in Premiere 8. Most of the information seems to be for making a 4:3 clip widescreen and not the other way around, which is what I'm after in order to make use of some free clips I have.
When I drag a PAL widesceen clip into my 4:3 PAL project, there is obviously a height difference. I have seen mention of a function called 'interpret footage' in some postings, which is accessed by right click on a clip from the media bin. That doesn't show for me and I'm not sure if it's what I need in any case.
Is there a utility in Pr8 to crop a widescreen clip at the edges or make it conform to 4:3?
Thanks for your help and apologies yet again for the newbie nature of these posts.
Craig

Hey Bill.
That's a lovely philosophy you have there :-)
The problem we have here in Egypt is that there are few people like yourself, whom one can turn to in order to share ideas and get support from - simply because there are few other users of applications like this...and certainly none where we are! As you have been so kind in offering me your assistance, when you have the time, perhaps you could share for me (and no doubt countless others who are just finding their feet and will have similar queries) your thoughts and wisdom on these common newbie areas for concern?
In      order to produce high quality videos for the web or perhaps a DVD for an      in house TV channel in a shopping mall, what significant functionality will we miss by only having Adobe Elements and not Pro? Can we      realistically expect to be able to produce small commercial projects that      will stand up in terms of quality with this application or will we always be making compromises?
In      terms of hardware: I have a high spec PC with plenty of RAM and an Nvidea      GT9400 video card. (2.6Ghz processor and 2.5 GB RAM.) What general improvements could      be made to this set up in order to make my video production process smoother?      My system still jitters at times and seems to slow when processing larger      clips – during background rendering mainly.
I      notice that many of the PAL clips I have bought from stock libraries (in      order to get started before I start shooting my own) are of varying      quality and logically the HD videos are of far better quality than the      standard. Therefore should we be aiming where possible to stay in the HD      domain? Either at 16:9 or 4:3 for PAL depending on the project settings you      are working to.
I've      just started experimenting with TITLES in Pr8. There are some great      effects and one can achieve some fairly pro looking results. However I      have noticed that the resolution of the text and some of the backgrounds are      a little lacking in definition. Is this an issue with my screen resolution      or is there anything we can do to sharpen these? I guess my concern is      that if they lack clarity in Pr8, then by the time they end up in a .FLV      file for a website production – they may look even worse.?
I      have a background as a sound engineer as you know – so I understand about      writing music for picture and working with the film. Can you tell us the      best way in Video production to work? Should we build our video first then      add the music to this? Should we record our voice over first and sync our      video to this and then add the music later? Is there no fixed way of      working? Is it s all dependant on the type of project you are working on      and how many music and voice over cues there are to hit?
Bill. Any help will be greatly appreciated and of course – this is not urgent. If and when you have time will be great.
PS - is this you? http://whunt.com/

  • Importing 1080 clips into a standard 720x480 project.

I'm working on a standard 720x480 project. I have a few 1080 clips I would like to convert to use in this project. I can import the HD clips OK. I just want to crop the HD clip to the same 4:3 shape as the rest of the project. The problem I'm having is that the HD clips insist on staying in widescreen format. I can change the size but I can't get the standard 4:3 window to crop into, only the widescreen shape. Resizing the HD clip changes the size but the shape remains widescreen format. It seems like this should be easy. Anybody know how to do this?
    Final Cut Express 4.0.1

Yes, that works OK, although I will probably not be cropping the clips all the same. I hoping to take advantage of the higher resolution of the HD clip to be able to crop the different clips differently to best use the image area.
I was hoping to resize the clips BEFORE placing in the timeline. It seems to me that when I place an HD clip into a standard 4:3 timeline it is converted into regular definition, but in widescreen format with black bars top and bottom. Then when I crop to fill the frame and eliminate the black bars it doesn't look as good as the regular video in rest of the sequence. (Much the same as if I blew up a standard clip by resizing - it doesn't look as clear as the un-cropped version).
Is there some way I can work in a different project to crop them in HD and export them as QT movies in the lower resolution format?
Is there a way to export a final HD project directly into a cropped 4:3 standard definition QT movie? I can export a widescreen low def version OK but it will be shown in standard 4:3 so it looks much smaller with the black bars top and bottom. These are all different ways of getting to the same place.

  • Cant correctrly import time remapped clips into AE from Premiere project

In AE CC (12.2.0.52) I am importing a project from Premiere CC 7.2.0 (46). On windows. Using command File-> Import-> Adobe Premiere Pro project.
Those shots in the premiere, which has different from 100% time stretch are importing in AE not correctely (see the third track from the top on the screenshot). In the imported timeline there are: holes, strange size of imported tracks. And there is no any time remap on the imported tracks.
If you do Ctrl + C selection in Premiere and stick it through Ctrl + V in the AE timeline - the same garbage - inserted not correctly.
Who knows where I am wrong in technology?
And is there possibility to import project with already correctly set time "remaps" from Premiere?
(import via Dynamic link - not suitable for me cuz i need all tracks)
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem and looking for a solution.
Does anyone know of a solution for this? I think it's a very important feature to have work correctly.
    Thanks,
    Kerry

  • Imovie locks up/crashes every time I drop a film clip into the project

Almost every time that I drop in a film clip to my current project, iMovie locks up and crashes producing a long readout for Apple.  I've made plenty of projects, but this one is due by Friday. I have to keep waiting to close it and go back in.  Every so often, a clip will drop in perfectly.  Sometimes, just the audio drops in (no video).  This will take forever at this rate!  Any ideas?

You could try converting the clips to DV using MPEG Streamclip, then import the resulting QT DV clips into FCE. In MPEG Streamclip, select Export to QuickTime, then select Compression = "Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC" with a 720x480 frame size. I don't think that selecting "Other" frame size will work, I suspect it would still require rendering once in FCE.
    Alternatives
You could also try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec, selecting the 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) frame size .
You might look into whether your camcorder can downconvert the video to DV during playback, and recapture the video in FCE using the DV-NTSC easy setup.
Provided one of these 3 techniques works, it will be better & faster than rendering your existing video clips in FCE.

    1) Make sure that your project is in the same aspect ratio as your camera. If your camera shoots 16:9. make a 16:9 project.
    2) Check the clip inspector for the clip in your project to see if Image Stabilization is turned on. Stabilization works by zooming in, so you may want to turn it off.

sidenote, nomenclatura : you drag clips to a Project, not the Project Library..
you can add all clips from one Event into a Project..
    • click into the black background of the Event's Preview
    • hit Apple-A (='all')
    • hit E or drag 'n drop into Project..

  • Error -2002 when importing quicktime movie clips into iMovie Project

When I import QuickTime movie clips into my project, the scroll bar fills about 1/3 of the way, and then I get this message:
Can't open file "DSCN0812.MOV"; skipping it and continuing. I CLICK "OK," and then this message appears:
    Error during import
The file could not be imported: (-2002)
This happens to every movie clip. Anyone have any idea what's happening here?
    Thanks!

I guess, you try to import 'moving images' from a still cam, right? these are in a codec (=mov is no format, just a container) , iM doesn't support. Use the free tool *Mpeg Streamclip* www.squared5.com to convert these files to 'dv stream' BEFORE importing to iMovie.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • Importing 4:3 clips into widescreen project

I've set up a widescreen project (PAL DV Anamorphic) and have imported some 16:9 clips which look fine. I also want to put some 4:3 clips into the same project but these are always stretched to widescreen. How can I avoid this?
I've done this in FCP without a problem. Am I missing something obvious?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi,
Open up the clip in QT and select- show movie properties, highlight the video track and deselect 'preserve aspect ratio'. Save. Clip should appear as correct aspect ratio. Don't ask me what is going on here, it all seems back to front for me. Your comment on FCP made me think that something similar could be in effect here. I guess it's a file tag thing.

  • Separating clips into separate "projects"

I've checked each topic that even looks close to my problem, and can't find an answer (5 pages of this discussion).
I've already imported the tape. It consists of say 50 clips of varying lengths. There are 5 categories each clip might belong to: each of my 4 children and me (home).
I want to create a Project for each of these categories and then save each clip into the appropriate category. When finished, I want all clips for that child in Project A, all clips for Child B in Project B, etc.
I have not been able to do this without saving the entire tape as 5 different projects, then delete the clips that don't "apply" in each Project. This takes up a huge amount of space. I'm not even sure that I get what I want after I do that, as each Project, after alteration, still seems to be just as large as the original.
I really don't want to re-import the movie/tape, stopping at the end of each clip to store it in a separate Project or to set up a new project for the next clip.
There has to be an easier way to do this. What is it, please?

    Hi grandpa,
sorry for confusing you with my word-creations… I totally understand, what's your masterplan, I just have ONE kid as hereo of my movies (my son is 5y), and I also try to make "themed movies" (at the beach, soccer, cute, funny etc)…
so, I too have the problem of dozends of hours tape, mixed with all kind of content and then shorten that into 5min…
but I don't import EVERYTHING, and then try to divide it into 5 big "folders"… there's another, more pro tool for editing, called FinalCutExpress… it has a totally different method of handling movies… as in a Hollywood edit lounge, you can import the tapes and first organize them in socalled bin, THEN you start editing… but I can't recommend FCE for a beginner… VERY high learning curve, iM is much more intuitive…
the "one tape for every grandchild"-idea is so wonderful simple&easy, I would do so in future… (labeling is important…)…
another thing, I recommend: after a day/weekend of shooting, start editing immidiatly! your memory is fresh, you're motivated to do it…– get a big external harddrive and store your 5, 6, 8 different projects… you can work on them over a long time simutanously… so, everything grows, not only your grandchildren…
    use Hui's hints…
    good luck, have fun!

  • Importing PAL clips into an NTSC project

    Hi guys,
I'm new to FCP... I'm wondering if it's possible to import a PAL clip into an NTSC project and will FCP do the render automatically and transfer it to NTSC?
If not can someone recommend the best way to convert such a clip? I've come across the JES Deinterlacer, but am wondering if there might be something better than that?
    Thanks in advance. Chaim

take a look at graeme nattress' standards converter.

    Yes.

Not deleting the original will help.
do I need to make the clip independent?
Only if you are absolutely determined to delete the original.

  • Import mp4 clip into imovie project

Thought I could drag and drop - but it's not working. Original clip was filmed with the movie setting on my regular digital camera as a .mov file extension. I think I was told I needed to convert to mp4, which I did with isquint. Still can't put the clips into imovie. What am I doing wrong?

Thought I could drag and drop - but it's not working.
Where are you trying to drop the files? "Drag 'n drop" only works if you drop the file on an "Event Name" in the Event Library list and not directly to an Event window. Of course, the audio and video compressed data must be compatible.
