19" Sharp TV as monitor

Hi, I'm looking to put together a video-editing setup, and since I don't have the money to get any larger scale computer/monitor arrangement, I'm planning on using my MacBook with extra memory, attached to a TV that I got for free from Verizon (part of the FiOS deal).
I have the TV, a MacBook loaded with Final Cut Studio, a USB mouse and a USB keyboard, but other than that I don't know what to get. Does anybody know what cords I would need? And if there would be a way to preserve resolution while using a TV as a monitor? Thanks in advance.

If you have a new aluminum macbook:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?mco=MzE2OTkyOA
Then you will need a DVI to HDMI cable (I assume the TV has HDMI as I have one from the fios deal as well)
If you have a white or black macbook you have a choise between Redular Video (Yellow Cable) or HDMI.
HDMI: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B?mco=MzE2OTkyOQ (again, you will need to buy a DVI to HDMI cable)
Video: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A?mco=MzE2OTkzMA (you will need a standard RCA cable (Yellow, Red, White)

Why does final cut x not recognize the sharp PN- K321 monitor ( European version ) as output video monitor, and premiere yes?
Working with two cinema display and PN- K321 and I can not preview the output video at 4K by DisplayPort, whereas with premiere and after effects I have no problems

Look, you can build an HD DVD with an SD movie, just as you can build an SD DVD with an HD movie. This is not a bug, it is most likely user error. Apple will not be addressing it.
Just start over, and ensure you are building an SD DVD by bringing up the inspector for the disc (click on the background in the Graphical tab).
Make sure SD DVD is selected:
(If you do the same thing on your ill fated project, you'll see that HD DVD is selected)
Build your DVD and you'll be fine.
    Patrick
P.S. You will need to google HD DVD and Blu-Ray if you want to understand the difference between the formats. The reason that DVDSP included HD DVD was that its format was similar to SD DVD's. Blu-Ray is something else entirely.

  • Adjusting Monitor Sharpness

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 15 i7, How can I adjust the clarity, sharpness of the monitor besides the brightness adjustment. I have the 1440x900 pixel. I looks like it's not sharp enough.
Will this be okey to look if I attach it to a 27 inches monitor by Samsung?
    Thanks,
    MacPro15

Not really true. When you decrease resolution, it's applied some kind of interpolation for projecting, let's say, 1366x768p on a 1920x1080p monitor. Depending on the interpolation method applied, borders, textures and fonts look too smooth, so you have to apply a sharpen algorithm. Technically, it's a normal process and any interpolation usually comes with a sharpen algorithm. If you can't adjust these settings, it's a software fault for not providing fine adjusts on display resolution.

  • Photos Look Blurry on NTSC monitor when played from timeline

When I play back jpeg photos from my timeline on my monitor, the pictures look a bit blurry, especially right at the end of my transition, such as a cross dissolve...When I stop the playhead on a jpeg, after about 1 second, the image becomes very sharp on the monitor...once I start playing again, the image becomes a bit blurry!

    Dave,
On both my G4 and G5, I've encountered the same problem from time to time and here's the workaround that fixed it for me:
Apply a filter to the images. I use the 3-Way Color Corrector since many of the photos could stand a little tweaking for TV anyway. Render them and they should retain their original sharpness.
I have no idea what causes the problem, why it only affects some of the images and not all of them, nor do I know why re-rendering them after applying a filter works ... but it does for me.
    -DH
ps: another symptom that this fix takes care of is when you see a small shift (1 or 2 pixels) in the image's position as it comes out of a transition.

  • Copy not as sharp as the original

When I copy a photo that I downloaded from the Internet on a CD (so I can trash the original to save space on the HD) the copy is not as sharp as the original.
Is that part of the story with copying an image or is the disk at fault ? I use Imation CD-R 1x-8x compatible 650 MB-74 min. Also (not sure if this is relevant) I was on OS 9.0.4 and later 9.2.2 when I downloaded. I have now Mac OS X.
The difference between the copy and the original is small but there's a difference. On some picture it is obvious, on other I have to look well and back and forth until I see -"Oh yeah there's less details !" Out of curiosity I took one of these photo saved on CD and put it on Adobe Photoshop and changed the contrast (or was it brightness/sharpness ?) I was surprised to see that if I make it sharper by just 1% it is exactly as the original. Didn't imagine that 1% will make such a difference but it does. It was a while a go; Perhaps it was 2% but certainly not more. If I have a headshot of a person, the hair on the original can clearly be seen as hair (individual hair, that you can almost count) while on the copy it's a bunch of hair. Or the eyes, skin, everything is sharp on the original, dull on the copy.
On some picture the difference is obvious (I guess it will be more than 1% if I put it on Adobe.)
So why is that ? why isn't a copy like the original since the picture is digital ?

    Hi eww..
I should have said in my first phrase
"When I copy on a CD, a photo that I downloaded from the Internet and put it on the HD."
    They are all .jpg usually around 100K (72K, 88 K,104K, 164, 280K)
I visit a site (Photography, Nature, etc.) and if I like a picture I click File-->save as. The display ask Where: MacIntosh HD
    Format : Web Archives
This is now with Mac X...with OS 9.0.4 it was slightly different : the choices were
    Web Archive
    HTML source
    plain text
But regardless if OS 9 or X, these photos are now on my HD .
That's all I do, I do not open any application, just "save" and it is on my HD, and as I said when I copy from the HD to a CD and then compare the two, the saved photo on the CD is not as sharp as the one on the HD.
    You said
This isn't true when the copies are made by the Finder, without opening the file. If you have a .jpg file on your desktop, and you hit Command-D to duplicate it,
    A) Or Finder-->File-->Duplicate ? same thing right ?
So if I want a good copy all I have to do is put the file on the desktop, leave it close and hit Command-D to duplicate it, (or Finder-->File-->Duplicate if it's the same thing) and I'm OK ? It has to be on the desktop ?
    B) OK I just click Duplicate on a photo unopened dragged on the desktop and then duplicate it. I compare the two and this is weird coz the copy is sharper (slightly but visible) than the original. How could that be I ask myself so I switch the original on the right side of the monitor and the copy on the left side and what do you know the original is now better.
Out of curiosity I also copied a photo unopened still in one of my folder (to check if I HAVE to put it on my desktop) and compare the two. Same thing: left side of monitor.. etc.
I did not compare the copy done inside the folder with one done on the desktop.
Now I have to check if the problem I mentioned in my first post is due to the monitor or not. Everything on the right side is sharper.
My monitor, a new (now 1 year or so) LCD Samsung Syncmaster 910T seems fine. I don't see anything wrong while looking at it. I turned out the table lamp behind me since it is on my right about 2 arms length thinking that perhaps it illuminates the screen more (knowing fully well it's not that: it illuminates the room and the entire screen but just to be sure.) No change. the difference remains the same Everything on the right side on the monitor is sharper.
But if you open a .jpg image in a photo viewing and editing application and do a Save As... to make another copy of it in .jpg format, it's re-compressed — and JPEG compression is "lossy": it discards image information that the JPEG algorithm defines as relatively unimportant in order to make the image file smaller. Each time a JPEG file is opened and re-saved, it's re-compressed, and it gets smaller and less sharp and detailed. By the third or fourth generation, the image may be a real mess.
    C) 1. "photo viewing and editing application" ? Like Adobe ? Are you saying that if I open an image I have on Adobe photoshop and make changes, (sharpness, color, whatever) and then I save this new document, it's re-compressed ?
    2. Ditto if I just copy an image I have on Adobe photoshop (or on the HD). it's re-compressed ?
    3. Also when I want to copy something I can click copy or duplicate and never knew what's the difference between these 2 words.
What is the deadline to wish a Happy New year ? January 26 ?

  • Monitor compatability g3 266 mt

I need to buy a new monitor for my g3 266 mt. I'm running os 8.6. How do I find monitors that are compatable with this older model? What do Iook for, and what do I say to a sales person?

    Alan,
Thanx 4 the quick response. Profiler gave no indication of video ram to the card in C1 and it only shows 640 x 480 @ millions, 2 meg to the primary card in slot P1 (or was that F1?). I do not mind the lower resolution for some tasks but It seems to me that the Sony Trinitron monitor should be multi sync.
"leaves the extra ones hanging in mid-air" is what I was thinking but had not checked the glossary yet. I am so old school that I still work with the nubus cards in post Mac II machines Grant refers to frequently. I can now afford my first dream machine, a IIci with a portrait monitor connected to the onboard video and a nubus color card for a color monitor on the side. Hot stuff and $10,000 in 1988! lol
I still use a Quad 700 with a nubus video card, and a 20" super sharp B&W monitor for drafting real estate documents and deeds as my primary work machine. That setup with Filemaker Pro 2.1 has earned me more money than any newer machine! Nothing beets video real estate.
Time for me to update to PCI. I remember when Psyko had the only PCI computer in the house!

Weather is too nice today to spend more research time indoors after yesterday's snow. Other cards and other questions will have to wait. Thanx again.

  • How to connect my MBP at my TV ?

    Hi,
I would like to connect my MBP at my TV via HDMI, peritel would be best , how do I do that ?

    mbahundra wrote:
So S-Video is better quality than RCA?
Yes. RCA mashes all the signals into one pin. This results in lower picture quality than S-Video which separates brightness and color signals.
Both are far inferior in resolution and quality to the current digital standards, so when you connect your laptop via S-Video, the resolution is going to seem very low and coarse compared to your laptop monitor or digital TV, and RCA even worse. This low resolution can be no problem for simply watching videos. But you'll find it hard to read the Mac interface if you try to use an old TV as a computer monitor. A new digital HDTV, on the other hand, would be a sharp, high-resolution monitor.

  • Disappointing quality in exported slideshow

I've made a slide show in iPhoto 8 version 7.1.5. I'm satisfied with the quality, especially surprised to see the quality from the camera in my iPhone 4. Unhappily, when I export the slideshow from iPhoto as a movie or to iDVD, the quality of the images is significantly poorer. Image exposures and focus seem to suffer. Is there any solution? I thought digital meant that copies would be equivalent quality.
    Thanks.

Is this slideshow from stills from your iPhone? Did you crop them to the iDVD recommended size of 4:3 ratio? Also iDVD presentations are reduced in size to 720 x 480 for TV presentation and are not as sharp as computer monitor presentation.
I've found that creating the slideshow in iDVD gives me much better image quality in the final product. The options are a little more limited but the final quality, IMO, is worth it. Just my preferences.
When you complete your project in iDVD save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. Then mount the image and play it with DVD Player. This separates the encoding process from the burn process. If the project looks OK with DVD Player burn it to disk at the slowest speed possible.

  • Current Mac Mini and HD decoding

    Hi there,
I am considering buying a Mac Mini as an HTPC to connect via DVI->HDMI to an LCD TV. I was wondering if any of you has experience in playing HD content on a current generation Mac Mini and how does the Mini cope with it. Please note that I am not talking about BluRay since the drive only supports DVD, but rather .MOV, .MKV or .AVI videos encoded at 1080p using codecs like H.264 or similar. Can the Mini decode those without missing any frames on a 1920x1080 LCD TV?
    Thanks in advance!

480p seems to be the minis domain with H.264
The processor hits 100% in spots and can find a safe cushion of 9% free CPU from time to time. It seemed to lock on fine at 24fps constant, with the smallest of climbs to 24.57fps on the BBC Motion Gallery Andes Film [848 x 480 resolution].
Full screen locked on fine but I didn't have any fps readouts up. Only stuttered once for a short while, could have been the end of the download stream.
Compression artifacting is still readily visible on this particular 480p encoding when viewed on the much sharper 2005FPW LCD monitor.
This is why I primarily never saw the Front Row package ever being available for the current minis. Apple wants it to be a centrepiece for H.264 which the current graphics and cpu powered minis just aren't up for (H.264 pushes G5's and the fastest Intel CPUs to the wall as well when decoding.) Then again, a mini with all the extra hardware wouldn't be the mini I want. A low powered, silent beast that sips electricity and is perfect as a heavy web browser/email task oriented machine.
--add a G5 and a faster GPU and you end up with an iMac which low and behold is what Front Row ships on

  • Dual Displays G4 Quicksilver

    hello everyone,
i just got an AOC (DVI) 17inch flat panel display. I got an ADC to DVI adapter and hooked up the new AOC monitor. A Sharp flat panel monitor is connected to the VGA port. I have three problems.
1.) When the Mac starts up, the AOC monitor displays the white apple screen distorted everytime in new fasions upon each restart after the white apple screen, everything is perfect. Is this a problem/common?
2.) My new AOC screen is much brighter than the Sharp screen, is this to be expected?
3.) On the Sharp screen, instead of a mouse cursor, i get a white box that moves as the mouse but on the AOC screen, i get the mouse cursor, how can i fix this.
P.S. how do i span the two screens?
    Thanx a million
    Vince

    Hi
In System Preferences - Displays there should be an arrangement option so you can choose which of the two displays is the main one and an option to switch mirroring on or off. These will only be present if your graphics card supports two independent displays. I believe the dual 800MHz Quicksilver had a 'TwinView' graphics card capable of supporting two, which allows the desktop to be extended across both, whereas the stock graphics cards in the 733MHz and 867MHz models only supported one (you could connect two to the card, but the desktop on one would simply be mirrored on the other).
I think some variation in brightness between flat panel displays is normal, even if they're the same model from the same manufacturer. If they're from different manufacturers and use different LCD panels, back lights and/or electronics, I guess the difference is likely to be more pronounced. I believe the brightness of the back light can also reduce with age, and the display brightness may also depend on whether it's connected via the VGA or ADC/DVI port.
I hope this answers a couple of your questions.

  • Image degradation caused by rotation question

When I rotate an image from a horizontal to vertical orientation using iPhoto8 on my 24" Intel-based iMac, the image is reduced in size and loses sharpness. Is this loss in sharpness because the monitor is no longer displaying the image at a correct pixel ratio or is it a software problem like the lack of a lossless rotation routine in iPhoto?
    Thanks, Rick

I may be making some assumptions here but let me try and answer. Since the 24" iMac screen is almost twice as wide as it is tall, it stands to reason that when you rotate an image it will reduce in size. Or at least that will be the case if you were using a large portion of the wide screen to display the image horizontally in a landscape orientation. Anytime an image is reduced in size, it stands to reason that detail will suffer because fewer pixels are being used to render the image on the screen. Does that make sense or am I totally misunderstanding the question?

  • Burned A Rough To DVD but...

    Hi,
I'm mostly happy with what I see on after burning my documentary rough to DVD however,
    1) I burned 16:9 because I have some anamorphic footage in there but when I viewed it on a 4:3 TV, some of my shots and credits were cut off on the sides. Even on the wide-screen TV the some of the words were too close to the sides so I'll go smaller on the font size. Is there a TV safe mode I can work to in FCP?
    2) I have some video from VHS that was saved as a Quicktime Movie a while back. Every time a clip of it shows it's very jumpy! It's 16 bit Integer (Big Endian) 48K, Uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2, 640 x 480, 29.97 and a data rate of 149.13 mbits/s. My footage that works fine is more like DV 720 x 480 Little Endian, 29.94 and a data rate of 30.29 mbits/s. Can I export the jumpy video in question with Quicktime Pro to a friendlier format, keep the name and time the same and have FCP connect to it to fix the jumpy problem - I hope to not re-cut?
    3) Is there an easy way to calibrate my Acer, Sharp and Westinghouse monitors PROPERLY? I'm seeing things I never noticed in FCP, as clear as day on DVD/TV.

Is there a TV safe mode I can work to in FCP?
Of course. View > Show Overlays > View > Show Title Safe. Make sure the titles stay inside the inner markings.
    It's 16 bit Integer (Big Endian) 48K, Uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2, 640 x 480, 29.97 and a data rate of 149.13 mbits/s.
That is overkill and will do nothing for the quality of VHS. DV/DVC Pro is perfectly adequate.
Or transcode to ProRes if your computer and FCP version support it.
keep the name and time the same and have FCP connect to it to fix the jumpy problem...
Transcode the Uncompressed footage as above, the file will have exactly the same length. Give it the same name but save in a different folder. Reconnect to the files there.
Is there an easy way to calibrate my Acer, Sharp and Westinghouse monitors PROPERLY?
Are these computer monitors, domestic TVs, something else?

  • Menu background blurry

    Hello all,
I am trying to create a menu using an Illustrator file. In Illustrator, it's sharp as a razor, but when I import it into Dvd Studio pro, the image becomes extremely blurry.
I have tried importing it as a pdf, but that doesn't seem to help. I've tried saving the Illustrator file to eps and then opening it in Photoshop, but that makes it blurry even in Photoshop.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Any help will be much appreciated!
    Lianne

Illustrator is a vector based drawing program. Being vector based it will always match the resolution of the device it is being displayed on. If you zoom in on a vector based shape it will match the resolution and stay sharp. The monitors on computers these days is relatively high.
Video is pixel based, which means it has a fixed resolution. If you zoom in on pixel based images, the pixels just get larger (and therefore soft and fuzzy). Stand definition video on a computer screen is 640x480. Pretty low res. If you take at 640x480 image and have it fill the screen of a modern computer monitor, it gets very soft and fuzzy.
DVDs use video. So the highest resolution you will have for your menu is 640x480. Even if you do not have any video in your menu, you are still limited to that resolution. It is part of the specs for DVDs, so there will not be a "fix" for this in future versions of DVD SP. The thing is that every DVD you have ever watched in your entire life has that same resolution.
There is an excellent tutorial on how to get better quality (relative to the low resolution) menus at; http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/motion_text_in_fcpspencer.html

  • Seiki 50" 3840x2160 TV Mini-Review

I received it last Friday and have been using it all weekend and I am quite pleased with it so far. I replaced a Dell U3011 with it and I don't think I'll be hooking the Dell back up anytime soon.
Gaming at 30Hz with VSync on is a little "odd" feeling so I disabled VSync and played about 7 hours of Fallout 3 and 12-13 hours of Skyrim and I liked it a lot, though it really puts my 7970s through the wringer...I think their temps started out at almost 60°C and went upwards of 74°C for the most of my play time...I do notice a little input lag, though it is not enough to really affect my gaming style. However, I did not buy it as a "gaming" monitor so I don't consider it a "con".
It's great to surf the net with and as far as productivity apps are concerned, it's bada$#. I love being able to have several spreadsheets open at the same time while modifying code in my database to link the table to the fields in the various spreadsheets.
I didn't see tearing like I thought I would. I'm actually surprised at just how little tearing I see overall.
VLC can upscale movies quite well and I watched the following movies without any problems
    Avengers (Blu Ray Rip)
    Prometheus (Blu Ray Rip)
    T2 (Blu Ray Disc)
    Brave (Blu Ray Disc)
Supernatural Part of Season 7(Blu Ray Rip)
It's kind of odd being able to surf the web in one window while watching a movie in what is larger than fullscreen on my 30" Dell.
I can't speak to reliability but the company does offer a 1 year replacement warranty and I figure that in a year or so the prices of 4k2k TVs will have dropped to the point that if it does break, a replacement will not cost significantly more than my $1300 I paid. That beats the crap out of spending $5000 for one of those Sharp 32" 4k2k monitors currently on the market.
    Here's a pic compared to a 30" Dell U3011
    My background

Thank you to whichever mod moved it back to the proper forum.
    Follow up on this mini-review.
I've had it for about a week and noticed some issues with the resolution suddenly resetting itself. Basically, the screen would go black and then resume functioning 2 seconds later as if nothing had happened.
The company sent me an updated firmware and I flashed the TV today. I know I'm probably jinxing myself but since I flashed it, it's been fine.
Using a 30Hz LCD is a little "odd" at first, but after a few days with it there's no way I'd go back to my U3011. If playing games at a lower resolutionis the only trade-off I have to make to gain this much desktop real estate, it's a no brainer.
I do a lot of spreadsheet/database work and it is frikkin AWESOME to have 3 spreadsheets and a database open simultaneously without having to resize anything or minimize/maximize windows
As far as picture quality goes, this panel is far superior to the Samsung 40" I have. I really had to look closely to see any bleeding at all on this panel while the Samsung has what I would call large swaths of bleed.
Crossfire works fine and my games run well, but are limited to 30fps unless I turn off vsync.
I understand that there are people who will not even consider this unit because of the 30Hz limitation. To each his/her own. Everyone has their own preferences and likes.
For me, it's a better investment than my 30" was since I paid less for this than I did my U3011
Just for informational purposes I ran the Bioshock Infinite benchmark and here are the results

As you may imagine, Running something like Valley at 3840x2160 at Ultra with 8xAA places a large strain on my video cards (they only have 3GB each) so I dropped the specs a little due to the sheer increase in resolution
