1920x816 to 16:9

Hi - I have a 1920x816 clip that I need to resize to 16:9 for a DVD. I would like it if possible to be full widescreen without letterboxing. What window size would be the best and is this something that I would resize using scale in FCP?
Thanks.

1920x816 is not a 16:9 ratio. You can either re-proportion it or crop it to fit a 16:9 aspect. Standard DVD 16:9 clips will be 720x480 Anamorphic (the equivalent square pixel size would be 854x480.)
Good luck.

  • 1920x816 circles

Hi- I have a motion project that's 1920x816 with some circles that originate from a Photoshop file. When I import this into FCP in a sequence it looks fine. I then send it to Compressor using the custom 16:9 setting under frame size, and when I enter 720 as the width it selects 405 as the height. Motion, FCP, Compressor, and Photoshop are all set to square pixels and the circles still look circular all the way down the line until the sequence is compressed, that's when the circles turn out to be ovals.
What am I missing / doing wrong?
    Thanks for your help.

I take it there is a reason you're using a 16:9 (1.78:1) setting in Compressor, despite your project (at 1920x816) being Scope ratio (2.35:1)?
If so, you'll need to pad (add black to top and bottom) using Compressor, provided you've upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2. If you have Compressor 3.0.1 or later, in fact, there will be a drop-down preset in the Geometry pane, under Padding, for 2.35:1, inputting the needed values for top and bottom.
If you've not yet upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2, you'll need to pad in QuickTime Pro 7.1 or later (use the Letterbox option in Preserve Aspect Ratio, in the Size options dialog), then send that output .mov file to Compressor 2.x. (Compressor 2 doesn't do padding)
Otherwise, if you don't actually need a 16:9 image (you're doing some type of custom encode for the web or something), maybe you could make due with a custom frame size instead? 720x306 is what that would be, unless I'm mistaken.

  • How can I save a "trimmed" QuickTime movie at original high rez?

    I use QuickTime 10.1
In the past, after lobbing off part of a QT movie using the "Trim" function, I was never asked what quality to save it in, it just saved when I clicked Save. I never imagined I was losing quality by saving a trimmed movie.
Now, however, when I click Save a window pops up giving me two choices: 480p or 720p. Are we to assume the movie we're working on was no greater resolution than 720 to start with? Or is our movie being condensed against our will?
A test suggests the latter is true. Even if I lob off just a teensy bit, a file saved at 720p is VASTLY reduced in size. What is going on here, and how can I save my movies at the same high quality they start out with? I find nothing in Help about this.
Secondly, if I may slip this less important question in as well: Sometimes when I click Save I get an error message that "This operation cannot be completed," and QT crashes. This has happened a number of times, and I can't see that I'm doing anything wrong. Any clues?
    Many thanks.

In the past, after lobbing off part of a QT movie using the "Trim" function, I was never asked what quality to save it in, it just saved when I clicked Save. I never imagined I was losing quality by saving a trimmed movie.
Are you referring to a previous version of QT or your current v10.1 Lion version? Since the introduction of Snow Leopard and QT X v10.0, Apple has been moving towards a single combined "Save", "Save As...", and "Export" function with the name shifting from "Save" to "Export" as it evolved. (I.e., in the latest Mountain Lion rendering you are advised to read the "pop-up" option description to tell if you are performing a "Save/Save As..." or an "Export" action.)
Now, however, when I click Save a window pops up giving me two choices: 480p or 720p. Are we to assume the movie we're working on was no greater resolution than 720 to start with? Or is our movie being condensed against our will?
Since you have not indicated the encoded or anamorphic dimensions for the file you are working on, it is difficult to determine if the QT X player is acting normally or not here. Basically, whatever you are doing is triggering an export action which limits the dimensions to specific category levels. You cannot, for instance, export a 1280x544 (2.35:1) aspect file to a 1920x816 (2.35:1) aspect file but you can export it to a 720p 2.35:1 aspect file because it woud fit within the 1280x720 defined 720p dimension window. I.e., unlike QT 7 Pro, the application will not let you "upscale" the source file during the encode since this would reduce export quality and is the same as exporting the file at its current dimensions and simply rescaling the playback dimensions—a much faster workflow. As to "being condensed against our will," this could be the case in some instances. For instance, a 1280x720p30 file might be re-compressed to a 960x540p30 file for mobile device compatibility which, in turn, usually depends on the specific method of accessing the export action.
A test suggests the latter is true. Even if I lob off just a teensy bit, a file saved at 720p is VASTLY reduced in size. What is going on here, and how can I save my movies at the same high quality they start out with? I find nothing in Help about this.
If you are referring the to QT 7 Pro "Save As..." workflow and you still have your QT 7 Pro registration key, then the obvious answer would be to install the QT 7 v7.6.6 Player and key it for "Pro" use. Both QT players can be installed and used under OS X v10.6, v10.7, or v10.8 simultaneously. (I.e., by default QT X installs and runs/updates in "Applications" folder while QT 7 Pro installs and runs/updates from within the "Applications/Utilities" folder where they should be left.
Secondly, if I may slip this less important question in as well: Sometimes when I click Save I get an error message that "This operation cannot be completed," and QT crashes. This has happened a number of times, and I can't see that I'm doing anything wrong. Any clues?
This would be more difficult to answer. Since QT X is a product "in development" and has proven to be less stable than QT 7 Pro and includes far fewer editing features, I, for one, do not use it for any serious edits no matter how minor they may be. On the other hand, I have no real problems with its playback and conversion features as long as I work within the application's intrinsic limitations as it continues to evolve.

UPDATE to this CURRENT LOCATION on iPad / iPhone / Find My iPhone issue -
I have a iPad that kept showing my OLD adress in Orlando Fl on BOTH google maps and Apple Maps, even after I moved up north to South Carolina.  I tried everything.  I then tried my FIND MY iPHONE on my Macbook Pro and same thing.  Annoying.
This evening I set up my BACK TO MY MAC so i could acess my Time Capsule from work.  After I set it up, and just for grins, i renewed the DHCP Lease while doing this.  After the Time Capsule rebooted, my iPad displayed the correct location immediately.  My macbook pro was still showing the OLD location in my FIND MY iPHONE.  Did a restart and BAM, its all good.
Not sure if it was the renew or restart of the Airport Extreme Time Capsule.
    Hope this helps.

  • [SOLVED] Air Video Server Error Message

Does anyone here have any experience with Air Video Server for Linux? I sure hope so...
I'm trying to install Air Video Server on my Arch box so I can watch movies on my iPad without using my mac or converting the video files. I got everything installed, and the server software was running. When I tried to start a video on my iPad, I got "unexpected error." So, I killed the process and started the server manually, and then tried to play a video. This is the output that I got. Maybe you can help?

It seems to me that there's a problem with creating a thumbnail. Any ideas?

Alright, I have figured it out after much working! After doing some searching and realizing that no one had encountered this problem with Arch Linux before, I decided to search specifically by the error that Java was giving, instead of trying to relate it to Air Video Server. I had to edit the script that launched the daemon (/usr/bin/air-video-server) to add the option -Djava.awt.headless=true and then I needed to install an additional library (that wasn't on the dependencies list, ironically enough) fontconfig. I guess fontconfig is standard with X11, which is why it wasn't listed as a dependency. It's also why I needed to add the headless option to the launch script, because I don't use a GUI, just a CLI. This is solved, and I'll leave it up for others that may encounter similar problems.

  • Is there a way to generate bars and tone in fcpx?

All the discussion communities I could find seem to tell me how to do it in FCP7.  And when I download versions from the internet, they play incorrectly-soft and warbly.
    Thank you.

Sure. You should be all set. This is what I sent over:
The 1 kHz Sine waves folder has three audio files:
    1K mono
    1K stereo
    1K mono (short)
The tones were generated at -12 dBFS.  You can use the “short” tone to bleep stuff out, if necessary. Remember that you may need to adjust it’s level.
The Color Bars with Tones folder has two video files:
178 Bars and Tone. That’s your 1980x1080 HD version. The tone is embedded, and is also 1K @ -12 dBFS
235 Bars and Tone . That’s your “Cinemascope” version. Resolution is 1920x816, tone embedded, same specs.
Keep in mind you can re-scale the video files. In other words, if you need 1280x720 (720p), just resize the 1080p movie and you should be good to go.

  • Can't stop still images from scaling in the sequence.********

I've tried everything at this point.
    Baffled.
If anyone can help me figure this out.
    please do.
I cannot get any image to come into the sequence without scaling down to 28%.
images are 4368 x 2912 and being brought into a sequence that is 1920x816. (cinemascope)
    Help!

FCP will automatically scale your images down to fit the dimensions of your sequence.
You could either scale the images to sequence size before importing, (you could export using QT conversion to a form of still image, but probably better off doing it in Photoshop or wherever the images originated from)
If you want to do any pan/scan with the images, you'd be best served to resize them to slightly larger than your sequence settings, so you've got room to move them around and scale them a bit.
Or you could change your sequence settings to match the image dimensions (but that would affect what I'm guessing your intended output is to be)
    Hope that helps,
    K

  • Formatting Question - Help, working on a deadline

    I have a FCP sequence that's 1920x816, square pixel, 23.98 fps to I need to convert to a 16:9 m2v for a DVD.
I exported it to Compressor using the "best quality-90 min" setting and set the Padding pull down menu to 16:9 ... the resulting image when played in Quicktime and burnt to a dvd is far off center- the picture slid to the right leaving much more space on the left side of the screen than the right. How do I do this correctly so it's all correctly centered?
I'm also noticing that Compressor is seeing the sequence as having a NTSC 601 pixel aspect ratio, which it is not- it's square, but those settings in Compressor are grayed out- don't know if that has anything to do with it.
On a related note, when I burn this on a DVD should I set DVDSP to letterboxed or pan & scan or both?
    Thanks for the help!

You're not distorting it, no. 1920x1080 is a 16x9 ratio in HD. When you drop a 1920x816 clip into it, the clip will fill to the left and right edges of the frame, and there will be black on the top and bottom (letterboxing) because you don't have enough vertical pixels to fill the frame.
FCP only tries to make a clip fit across the nearest comparable dimension. If your clip was 1900x816, FCP would automatically zoom the clip in until it fit across the horizontal. It won't stretch a clip, it will attempt to maintain the proper aspect ratio of the original clip.

  • Simple solutions for cinematic look with 60i video?

I'm sure this questions pops up over and over but I'm getting a huge headache trying to sort everything out through my searches, especially as a beginner to the film making world.  I'll get right to my questions, but first here is the equipment I am working with:
    Camcorder = Sony HDR-XR500, shooting in 1920 x 1080 60i AVCHD format
    Software = CS4 Creative Suite
I recently threw together a 10 min movie of a trip I just arrived back from using Premiere Pro, and while it was a lot of fun putting together I really have no idea if I went about it the right way.  I want to practice taking a clip of mine and converting it to that cinematic look, and hope someone can help guide me through some steps.
Here is what I want to achieve:
    - 2.35:1 pixel ratio
    - 24p or similar effect (trying to figure this out makes my head spin)
I know color correction has a lot to do with the cinematic look, but I realize there are many ways of going about this so I'll refrain from asking any questions in regards to this for now.  (I did find using the Fast Color Corrector and setting Saturation to 75%, and Input levels to 20, 1, 220 gave a nice film look)
Step 1: What settings should I use to create my new project?
    Capture Format = HDV?
For the sequence presets should I use AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) non-anamorophic?
Step 2: If I want to create a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, should I simply crop my clip?  I think I read somewhere for 1920 x 1080 video, crop 14% from top and bottom?  Or should I crop when I export out the movie?
Step 3: What would be the simplest/quickest way of getting that 24fps look using Premiere Pro or After Effects?  I know shooting in 24p is obviously the easiest way, but should I simply deinterlace my 60i video by right clicking clip>Field Options> Always deinterlace to achieve similar effect?
Step 4: Exporting video....again so many options I'm not sure what to do here.  Basically, could someone provide me with the best exporting options for the format I'm trying to achieve for:
    - Posting on Internet
    - Viewing on computer
    - And viewing on blu-ray
I really appreciate any help to the above questions.  Big thanks!

Step 1: Capture settings are irrelevant for AVCHD on that camera.  Just copy the entire folder structure intact to your hard drive.  Pr will find the copied footage through the Media Browser panel.  You may even be able to edit directly from the camera's HDD.  You should try it and see.
Step 2: 1920x816 produces a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.  Assuming all of your action occurs in the exact vertical center of the shot, then you should crop 132 pixels from top and bottom.  Placing your 1080 footage into a custom progressive sequence of those dimensions should get you what you want, as long as you don't have Default scale to frame size selected in Preferences.
Step 3: This is the tough one.  To get 24 fps out of 30 fps, one frame out of every 5 needs to be dropped.  This will produce perceptually jerky playback, especially if any motion at all is present.  So the remaining frames must be blended together in some way to smooth out the bump where the missing frame is.  Using AE to accomplish this is, IMHO, the best solution for an all-CS4 workflow.  In AE, you have 2 choices: Frame Mix and Pixel Motion.  PM produces better results, but FM renders faster.  If you haven't done any editing of the clips in Pr yet, then the best idea would be to convert all of the footage in AE before importing it into Pr.  If you've already got edits in place in Pr, then you can select all of the clips in the sequence and choose File | Adobe Dynamic Link | Replace with After Effects Composition.  Either way, each clip in AE must be individually interpreted to Separate Fields/Preserve Edges.  The comp settings must be set to 24p.  Then Frame Blending must be enabled for the comp, and finally, each Frame Blending Layer Switch must be set to either Frame Mix or Pixel Motion.  If you do use Dynamic Link, be sure to turn *off* Frame Blending in Pr, because AE has already taken care of that.
Step 4: Because rendering will be so intensive and take so long, I recommend exporting an intermediate file from Pr, then re-importing that file to be used as the source for the various export formats.  Otherwise, you'll have to render all over again for each individual export format.  For web, I recommend Flash.  For computer viewing, it depends on your delivery method (CD, DVD, Download, External Hard Drive, Flash Drive, etc.).  For Blu-ray, either H.264 Blu-ray or MPEG2 Blu-ray.

  • Aspect ratio conform issue

    Hey guys,
I'm editing a small piece but want it to take the 16:9 footage and have it cut to 2:35. I've changed my sequence settings to do so (1920x816, square pixels), and in my display window, it changes properly. however, when i drop a clip in and say "no" to it making the sequence the same as the clip, it drops in the same ratio the clip is already (16:9), but housed WITHIN my 2:35 sequence...
What am I doing wrong here?

Are you confident you want to work that way? You are going to be editing in an FCP7 non-standard frame size which is going to give you a lot of trouble during the edit.
Is your source footage already transcoded to ProRes? If so, you may want to consider this workflow:
    Create a new sequence.
Drop a source clip on the timeline. When FCP asks to match the source properties, say yes.
Go to the tab Effects > Video Filters > Matte > Widescreen and apply the Widescreen filter to the clip on the timeline.
Once applied, double click on the clip on the timeline so that it opens in the viewer, and then click on the Filters Tab. Set the WIdescreen filter to 2:35:1.
Now the clip will display letterboxed in the 2:35:1 aspect. Edit your sequence, applying the Widescreen Matte filter on the clips. You can copy and paste the filter from the first clip to the rest of the clips.
When you are finished editing, export the sequence as a Self Contained QuickTime movie without conversion.
Take that exported QuickTime movie into Compressor and set the crop to crop to the 2:35:1 aspect ratio and in to transcode to the various codecs/framesizes you need for delivery (YouTube, DVD, etc.)

  • Film look 2.35 problem new preset cs6

ON  ROLE HERE GUYS, ANOTHER QUESTION. I created a new preset 1920x816 for the film look wide screen aspect ratio. When i drag the footage in the timeline it does not fit the screen in the monitor? I have to ctrl alt and drag sideways for it to fit the screen in the monitor. Default scale to frame is checked. What am i doing wrong, anyone... steve England.

Edit in the normal 1920 x 1080 sequence and use this:
    http://www.behance.net/wip/118543/239113?share=1&sid=bu2dlapnel6qa13efl8l99sd91
You can crop on export for computer viewing, or add a Crop effect for DVD/BD creation.

  • Testing format 2,35 : 1

Just for fun I tried to set up a video in Panavision-format.
I found and followed a tutorial on Vimeo how to do it (Philip Bloom).
    In short:
    AIC 1080/50
Used a Matte-filter called Widescreen setting it to 2,35:1. It looks OK in the canvass.
Exported it in QTC as H.264, size 1920x816 with crop
It took about 35 minutes on my iMac and came out squeezed (how do you spell that word?) but otherwise in correct format/ratio.
    What did I miss?

It could be even letterboxed, or whatever. Is there a possibility of doing this is in iMovie? If not, in what app or utility can I do this.
You should be able to do this in QuickTime Pro 7. If you want to preserve all your content, you will need to pad the left and right edges.
The 2.35:1 equivalent of 1920x1080 would be 2538x1080
The 2.35:1 equivalent of 1280x720 would be 1692x1080
See my page at http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/QT_Pro_7xmasking.html for a starting point idea of how to do this.

  • Are there updates of Adobe Premiere Elements 4?

I'm trying to re-encode a video that is 1920x816 2.35:1 and the last program I used cut off after 104 minutes
and it is 132 minutes. Trying to encode minute 104-132. It's an 8.5 GB HD file and I don't have any HD presets
over 1080 and I can't edit the frame size under create a new profile, Any suggestions?

As John points out, you have managed to get to the wrong forum.
There are no updates to PrE 4, other than PrE 7. The only version of PrE that had an update was PrE 3, going to Vista compatibility with PrE 3.0.2.
Now, if your Preset matches your footage, you need to look at your free, defragmented disc space. Sounds like you might be running out.
See you in the PrE forum.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Are there updates available for Adobe Premiere Elements 4?

I'm trying to re-encode a video that is 1920x816 2.35:1 and the last program I used cut off after 104 minutes

I can't remember where it came from, but converting it was a technical
challenge. It is either an Apple iPod movie or a Sony PS3 format. It had a
video of AVC format and an audio track of DTS format in a Matroska envelope.
As you said it's a rare bird. I got the first 2 GB converted using Super
2007 and the settings I use may have limited the output size. I was just
converting the video and not the audio. I'm doing it over using an unusual
conversion tool called Alltoavi, which from the artwork in the skin of the
product is primarily used by fans of Japanese anime. I tried upgrading the
AVS convert utility from version 2.7 to version 6, but it said after I
installed it that it is shareware with a cost of $49 and the program still
neither knew what to make of the envelope Mkv or the avc file in it. There
is an incentive program to update Adobe Premiere Elements 7? Would it be
able to handle more formats and sizes of Bluray source files (not encrypted
    of course). paj692

  • Latest MPlayer 31774-1 x264 MKV Playback Broken?

I noticed since after the last mplayer update i can't watch some of my mkv x264 movies anymore. Mplayer starts playback just fine with normal terminal output but the movie is always paused and not playing. I can forward and rewind through the movie with mouse and keyboard as usual but its just not playing. Totem has no problem with the same movies and they worked just fine with the old mplayer-svn. Anybody else has this problem?
