Hi Folks,
This is the first time I've looked into external hosting, can
anyone recommend the best package for me?
I'd like ASP.net and MS SQL Server, and the ability to setup
lots of websites and URLs, but I'm not keen on maintaining the
server, updates, backups etc.
Can anyone recommend a package for me? Cost isn't really a
problem.

I am not fond of 1&1, honestly.

MySQL problem with 1and1 hosting

I have just discovered this group. I posted a similar post in the Dreamweaver area, but it probably needs to
be here.
I was asked to add database functionality to a website hosted by 1and1. I just started to use DW CS5
recently and when I tried to connect the MySQL db using Dreamweaver, I got the 404 file not found error
message. It has been a while since I have worked with PHP and MySQL, but I have used MySQL many times in the
past using DW CS4 and using 1and1, so I know that it used to be possible.
Here is what I have done so far:
Tried to connect using DS CS5. Tried to connect using DW CS4. I contacted 1and1 and they told me that they
no longer allow MySQL to connect using Dreamweaver. However, they sell DWCS4 software to be used with their
higher end hosting packages (which I am using).
Here are my questions:
1) Is this a known problem with 1and1? If so, is the DW that they sell altered to get around this?
2) Is this how other hosting companies are going, or is this only true of 1and1?

Unlikely, because the product EULA declares a "No Modification" restriction.

This is not uncommon with shared hostings in particular, though there may be some which allow remote access. Let´s hope that other forum participants can provide recommendations.

In need of hosting advice

I'm in search of a web-hosting service that is fairly
inexpensive, and is scalable enough to handle video downloads, and
or video chat that won't be implemented on the website until phase
two of the project (which could be a year or two away). Initially I
will only need something fairly basic, then have the option to
upgrade in the future as the need arises. I know this isn't a
Dreamweaver specific question, but this is a hurdle I need to jump
over to get started on the production phase of my website project.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Helping my friend with her site hosted on 1and1. I've uploaded without error and tried Muse PHP Diagnostics and get 3 green checks. My public and private keys are made with the same domain name that I'm uploading to but I can't get the contact form to work. Any ideas? Website below. Thanks!!

I use the forms all the time on 1and1. I believe your problem is with the Captcha. I believe the Captcha that comes with Muse only works with Business Catalyst hosted forms. Try removing the Captcha and test again.

Looking for some internet hosting advice.

I am working on a website and I am trying to get an idea of
what to expect in the future. If I wanted to add a video sharing
area to my site, like YouTube, what would be the most
cost-efficient way to do it? I would need a very large amount of
disk space and a very high bandwidth transfer. I don't know much
about internet hosting, but I have been reading into it. It seems
to me that I would need to use one of these colocation facilities.
Is that right?

Why not just use YouTube? Put all your videos up there...sure

Macro Guidance to Start With...

I have registered a new business domain and using 1and1 hosting and DO NOT want that loooooong Mac address issue - so I went with personal domain and cname (alias) and the site worked well EXCEPT for the email function. The Indian tech support for 1and1 tried to explain how the alias "points" to .Mac and I have to change some email record or something within .Mac - never understood it and gave up. email MUST work!!!
Fast forward to this morning and I am going to DUMP the cname (alias) and personal domain feature within .Mac and publish my site - what steps do I take to "publish" my iWeb developed site?

You're going to publish your website to a folder and then upload it to your server using an FTP client application.
I use Yummy which is very easy to learn and you can upload by drag and drop with almost no setup.

As you are publishing to a folder you should take the opportunity to optimize your files for faster download. Optimizing can increase your download speed dramatically.
You can get a separate application for this. I use an application called Web Site Maestro which both optimizes and uploads. It takes a bit of setting up but, once you have done so, everything is more or less automatic. When you come to do an update, it has a "smart handling " feature which allows you to optimize and upload only the updated files. This is a big time saver.
The latest version now optimizes JPEGs which is very useful if you keep your photos in this format and don't let iWeb convert them to PNGs.

Lost Page Settings When Transferring To Web

My homepage loses background colour and recent changes when I
transfer it to my 1and1 hosting site. When I preview my homepage in
Dreamweaver via Firefox or IE6 all settings and colours are fine
but when the page is uploaded to my site they are lost.
Can anyone tell me why this is?

I am very new to designing a web page but iWeb let me complete one and it is up and running on

what I need to know is I signed up with 1and1.com due to a article in MacWorld and I want
to use my domain from 1and1.com with a web site I built with iWeb I tried to go to
set up a Personal Domain and I put my 1and1.com site name in the area that I was supposed
to and then it (iWeb Internet) said that my paid domain site would need a Alias and I emailed
1and1.com and they said since I built my site using iWeb I needed to get help from  and not them
in the simple mode: I need to learn how to use iWeb and be able to use my web site I built with iWeb
and use it for my paid domain site> whathashappened2yourmacthisweek.com

It has nothing to do with iWeb and apple really. If you are hosting your domain name with 1and1, then they should help you, because you will have to alter settings to enable this to happen.
By changing the .Mac setting to personal domain, you obviously want to use CNAME to redirect your website?
If you want to do this, then you need to go to your 1and1 hosting control panel and alter the DNS settings. Most control panels have a manage DNS section. You need to enter CNAME and enter web.mac.com and whatever else they need you to do.
If you don't want to use CNAME, then you can use web forwarding with or without masking. For this you would need to enter web.mac.com/username/Site.
If they won't give you help to alter these settings then I would transfer your domain elsewhere. I did this recently, so I had both my domains under one roof and for ease of management.

You're being blamed...

Did you know that 1and1 Hosting services is blaming their current outage on you guys?
According to them it's a VERIZON "re-routing" problem causing people to not be able to access their 1and1 hosted web sites.
Any truth to their claims?

Albums On External Hosting Service Advice

I am a little confused here. Making my first iWeb site. I would like to publish to a hosting service other than .Mac In iWeb help it specifies things that will not work outside .Mac:
Password protection
Blog and photo comments
Blog search
Hit counter
Enhanced slideshows
None of these worry me except the slideshow issue although I can do without a slideshow so long as the album pages still appear.
I set up a gallery page from 4 albums located in iPhoto by drag and drop the album across. In the unpublished template page the photos appear to all be there in iWeb
Are those photos/albums still visible when the site is published to a place outside .Mac? The list of things that won't work include "enhanced slideshows" - Does this mean there are standard slideshows that do work? If not is there a workaround to make the albums visible/working?

So "enhanced albums" are a mystery. I can find no reference to them in Help or tutorials beyond that one item listing things that do not work outside .Mac.
What I am concerned about is that hosting at a service other than .Mac that there will be any problems with the albums other than as well as including slideshows?
I have found conflicting comments, some that suggest problems, while the Apple Help would seem to imply that there is a problem with slideshows. I would appreciate advice from someone who has iWeb made sites hosted outside .Mac

Any advice on mixing broadcom and intel iscsi nics between hyper-v hosts?

Way back in 2008 when we configured our virtualized datacenter (used Virtual Iron, now defunct) it was recommended practice to use identical iscsi cards for all hostnodes. We have since migrated to hyper-v 2008 r2, and are now moving on to hyper-v
2012 r2. We are currently spec'ing out a new hostnode, and I'm looking for advice on whether it's still the recommended practice to keep all iscsi cards as similar as possible.
The hosts will be connected to a MD3220i SAN.
The reason I'm asking is because we currently use Broadcom's 5709c's in all our hosts. They have had their problems, so I'd like to move away from them. Right now I have my eye on the Intel i350's. It's a choice between the two since those
are the only affordable offers we have. I did a quick search online and found that Intel iscsi cards are much preferred over Broadcoms. It's not in our budget to switch out all existing cards with intel's, so I'm wondering if it's now considered
relatively safe practice to let iscsi cards from different manufacturers play together, since the technology has become more mature. Any advice would be welcome.

Yes, it is still a recommended practice to use the same vendor for critical components across the cluster. But it is not a requirement. It is recommended to use common hardware because management/troubleshooting is easier. If there is a networking
problem and you are using two different vendors, which one is NOT going to say to contact the other vendor because, of course, it is not 'my' problem.
You will also get some warnings in the cluster validation wizard. These are warnings, so they don't prevent the building of the cluster, but they are warnings for good reason.
Anytime you have two different vendors, that is going to be a potential point of problem when you need to debug. And because neither vendor is likely to test their environment with the other vendor's products, they may say they don't support the configuration
you are trying to put together. So even though the validation wizard accepts it with warnings, you may end up with something that is unsupported by the NIC vendors. Ask them what their stance is.

Need advice, on how to build a Data- Hosting Center infrastructure, (Best practices)
I need to deliver costumer access on Ethernet, where costumers can get access on variable access rates (CAR ingress/Egress), some costumers are connected with no redundancy, and others need redundancy (hrsp) between to routers
Build on a number of 7507 routers with GEIP+ interface to connect to the backbone routers, and a number of PA-2FE-TX interfaces to provide costumer access with, each customer getting his own FE interface, that have been CARed down to the access needed from the customer?, the big issue here is that some customers dont need more that 4 10 Mbits (full duplex), and the use of a 100Mbit interface for a customer that only need under 10Mbit is over kill? any solution on how to solve this issue ?... is the solution to this problem, to connect one 100Mbit port to a switch, and running a trunk (dot1q) interfaces out on the switch, and then connect the customers to at switch port,
Or is the best solution setting up a number of 7606 routers???
I also need to deliver the L2 infrastructure, so I also need to build op a L2 infrastructure, that can support the customers equipments (Firewalls / Servers) that are segmented up I Vlans, here I need to secure my infrastructure so a customer error I the L2 network dont influence other customers??, is that setting up a number of 6500 switches that is connected to a number of smaller switches, using MST so each customer have its own MST instance??

1.PIX is the precursor to the ASA so at this point the ASA is probably a better choice since it'll be around longer plus I'm sure they have beefed up the base hardware compared to the pix.
2.Your external router is dependant on how much traffic your going to be dropping into your hosting site. A 7200 series router is a fairly beefy router and should be able to handle what you need if your looking.
3.One of the nice things about the 6500 is you can put a FWSM and segment all your different hosting servers to provide a more granular network control.
I don't have any case studys but will look around and post them if I find some.

Simple explanation of what is happening with iWeb and Mobile Me. Can anyone explain this simply and if our existing web site can be hosted elsewhere, if so can it still be updated using iWeb. Any advice very welcome

We have a website that has run successfully using iWeb and Mobile me. We understand Mobile Me is being discontinued from June. From this forum it seems iWeb also is not being supported any more. So can the existing site be hosted successfully with another provider or is it best to start again. If so any advice on options would be very welcome;

For the most part if you just get a new webhost you can continue to run with iWeb. Since you are still running Tiger iWeb should work just fine for you. You will simply need to publish your website to a folder or with the built in FTP in iWeb. Apple has simply quit updating iWeb & there will come a day when iWeb quits working in the later OS's whatever kitty comes after Lion.

Advice on running XE on a small virtual Linux host ("Virtuozzo")

I'm really excited by XE... I've been developing applications with Oracle at work for a couple of years now and now I can finally get rid of MySQL for the stuff I do in my spare time. Thank you, Oracle! :-)
I've got a virtual Linux root server which is hosted at a local service provider.
They call it a "VPS" (virtual private server), and it runs under Virtuozzo, http://www.sw-soft.com/products/virtuozzo/, which is somehow similar to VMWare.
My idea is to stop using the MySQL database that came preinstalled with the server and install XE instead. Currently, my server is rather limited in terms of available RAM and disk, so I'm considering an upgrade to a bigger type of VPS.
The options most compatible with my budget are:
- a virtual Linux server with 256 MB RAM and 500 MHz CPU or
- a virtual Linux server with 512 MB RAM and 1000 MHz CPU.
Besides a small Oracle XE database, I'll be running Apache with mod_python and a couple of web apps / scripts I'm writing. I don't expect high performance, I just want to have a small Oracle database to play with and to run some web pages.
Does anyone have experience with a similarly limited setup? Will the smaller server still allow some breathing room for other software, or is 256 MB the bare minimum required for Oracle itself?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I finally got my server upgrade and now have a virtual machine that's "should" be big enough to run XE (256 MB memory usable, 15 GB disk)
However, installation wasn't as smooth as I had hoped... I just can't get it to work. Any ideas? I have no idea what to do next.
Memory stats (these seem to include other machines on the same host):

I tried adding more swap space by creating an additional swap file, but that's not possible; swapon fails with "Operation not permitted". As far as I know, only the hosting machine can add more swap for me.

1and1 Blog Application Advice.

I am not a coder and I just got some hosting space on 1and1's servers. I am using Dreamweaver to upload my site for the first time and here's my question.
I want to have one of the pages in my site be updated with a daily article and for all old articles to be archived where users can peruse them and comment on them. 1 and 1 comes with a blog application that I can use for free (I believe), but I know little about it. Do you guys know of a blog app that I can paste into Dreamweaver (I remind you that I'm not a coder) that will meet my previously mentioned needs and it's ease of use would put your aunt or uncle's mind at peace ? Does this exist ? Is it free ? Do you have an example of it at work on a site that I can check out ?
