1G iPod chargers with 5G iPod?

My original 5gig iPod recently died, which gave me a good excuse to get a 60gig video. I love this thing. Anyway, the new one only comes with the USB sync cable and no charger. I still have the Firewire AC adapter and a Firewire car charger for the original iPods. Fred Meyer has 6 pin Firewire to iPod dock adapters on sale right now. However, I've heard that the latest iPods no longer have Firewire connectivity. You can't sync with a Firewire cable. However, can I still charge with these old accessories and an adapter, or have the power requirements changed? I don't want to plug it in only to fry it. Will it charge properly with the 1G chargers?

It will work, but the 5G ipod using the standard ipod plug vs thestandard firwire plug on the 1st gen ipod. You will need to get a firewire to ipod dock plug cable. Otherwise the ac unit will work.

The troubling thing to me is the fact that the charger gets extremely hot - according to what you are saying. The charger can get warm and can get fairly warm when the iPad is charging, but it should never get extremely hot. Make an appointment at an Apple Store, take the iPad, the cable and the charger with you and ask them to look at everything for you.

    Yes, you can.

  • New iPod Chargers with older generation iPods

    Hi,
I have an older generation iPod (20GB, no click wheel) and recently lost my charger (one that had a firewire port on the charger itself).
I went bought a new USB iPod charger and when I connect a USB cable with docking port to the charger and iPod (respectively), my iPod does not charge.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks!

If you have a 3rd gen iPod (the one with 4 buttons underneath the screen), then it does not charge via USB only firewire.
You need to get the charger exchanged.
Check here for confirmation on which iPod you have..

  • Issues with using aftermarket 2G chargers with the iphone

I was using my iphone 3GS last night and battery was over 90% I had just gotten done shooting some video and I was on my PC trying to figure what I needed to do to upload the video to YouTube. I pulled iPhone out of my pocket it was completely dead. I tried soft reset and hard reset with no luck. I thought maybe I had misread how charged the battery was and it had just died. When I got home I plugged it and let it charge overnight on an aftermarket charger. When I woke up this morning same thing. No power, no response( I tried plugging it into the wall and into the USB port of my laptop) I also tried soft reset and hard reset again this morning still no luck. I had been using an after market home charger that I had purchased with my original iPhone 2g. It seemed to work with no problems on the new phone and I had used it everynight for the last week or so.
As a last resort I put my iPhone in a new case-mate charger/holster I had just purchased and finally it gives me the battery charging icon. My conclusion is that the after market charge I have will work OK for charging a low battery to full again but if the phone is completely dead then maybe only an original charger will work. The problem is I have USB cables and home charges and car chargers from my iPhone 2g and my iPod touch and I assumed they would all work and were interchangeable but now I am not so sure. I am also stumpped as to how my battery could say 90% and 2 hours latter the phone is compelty dead. The only things I had done was turn on location services ( I was messing around with an app I downloaded (Zillow) and used the camera for less than 5 minutes and made 2-3 calls. Maybe the case-mate holster charger I had used ealier in the day had given a false full charge, I am not really sure at this point I am still trying to sort out the issue.

Apple changed the pin configuration with the 3G on phones ,ipod and itouch back in 2008
They removed the firewire charge option new kit is now not compatible with older
    options that charge
ie 3G or 3Gs for that matter will not charge on original Bose Sound dock or Apple
    docks for starters

  • 6300 chargers with C2-01?

Will 6300 chargers (car and wall) work OK with a C2-01?  The plugs for my old 6300 and new C2-01 are the same, although one of the wall chargers for the 6300 puts out 5.5V whereas the charger that came with the C2-01 puts out 5.0V
    Solved!

If you check the details under Sales Package Content for Nokia_6300 and Nokia_C2-01 the Charger is AC-3 in both the cases... so there should not be any problem..

  • Charge & Sync with iPod 3G Charger?

    Hi,
I was wondering if I can charge the iPad with my old (3rd Generation?) iPod charger. It's the one for PC that has a split cable with the iPod connector on one side and firewire (to AC adapter) and USB (to computer) on the other sides.
Can I use this to both charge and connect to my PC? It has the same iPod connector (it fits, anyway), but I wanted to make sure nothing has changed since 3G iPods...I don't want to blow anything up!
    Thanks,
    Brad

The iPod and iPhone chargers have half the current rating of the iPad charger, though some older ones look physically the same size. So even if they will charge the iPad, they will do more slowly -- especially if the iPad is in use.
I've pretty much replaced all my chargers with iPad chargers, which will charge any usb-charged device I own.

  • Ipod Touch Gen 2 connection socket is loose and will not charge or sync.

    Hello MacForum!
(Skip to the bolded part near the bottom for a summary)
I bought an 8 gig, 2G Ipod Touch a little under a year ago off of ebay (to save costs, as I was buying one for my girlfriend as well). Both were seemingly brand new, the first one I received was sealed from the factory. I set that one aside for my girlfriend. The second one I received was open but in good condition.
It had clearly been preowned, but as I said it was in good condition apart from some ware on the usb cord.
Anyway, fast forward a few months. I am on vacation and my Ipod touch suddenly wont charge. I plug it in, nothing. So I go to radio shack and get one of those go chargers with an ipod touch connector (which are total pieces of crap by the way) and that wouldn't charge it either. So after the vacation we get home and I decide to try my girlfriend's usb cord out, and that doesn't do anything either. So I jiggled it around and it would connect then immediately disconnect, or it would connect but it wouldn't charge, only showing the little plug symbol where the lightning bolt would be.
So I decided to try my cord again. Same stuff, jiggling makes it work, but it instantly disconnects or goes into that plug mode or what ever (like it's finished charging). It eventually died and I forgot about it and went on happily using my old Ipod Nano Gen 3. Now, months later I am in need of my Ipod touch (I left my nano at my girlfriend's house), so I dig it out, and the usb cord and plug it into my Mac and it's the same stuff pretty much, but I can old charge it if I push the cord's jack up in the Ipod touch's port. I've been wrapping the cord around it longways really tight to try and get it to charge, which is putting more ware on the cord. But it's the only way I can get it to sync or charge...Not only this but the cord doesn't even snap it like other ipod (which is really dumb design in my opinion) so it falls out if I lay it down without wrapping it.
*So, my Ipod Touch's connection port is loose.* The warranty is long gone. Fixing the port via apple will cost $133 dollars that I don't have to spend on it (Im in college).
I've searched high and low on the internet and found but two other person that had this issue, each not getting much feedback.
What are my options? Is there an easy fix? What should I do?

There are other repair companies for the touch/iPhone. Google them, you might find a lower price.

  • Looking for a Solar iPod charger for iPhone . . .

I am planning to hike across the Grand Canyon next month, and would like to take my iPhone with me during the trip. I know I won't be able to pull in EDGE while there, but would like to use the iPod portion of my iPhone. Since I will not be near any electrical outlets for 2 or 3 days, I was thinking about using a Solar Charger. I know there are several on the market that include rechargeable batteries that I could theoretically attach to my backpack during the day, then use to charge my iPhone at night.
Has anyone successfully used on of these chargers with an iPhone? Any experiences (good or bad) with such devices would be greatly appreciated. As would any links to specific products if you have used one.

Can't claim to have used it, but ilounge.com recently had this in their news section, and also the mfg link... Doesn't ship 'til 25-Oct.

  • Phone got real hot hooked to vehicle charger/iPod adapter

I was headed into the store when I went to unplug my iPhone from the iPod adapter which is a Pioneer, the backside of the phone were the Apple logo is located was so hot I couldn't even leave my finger on it to long, then the screen went haywire, so I retstarted the phone and got it to work, thinking it was a freik thing I plugged it back into the adapter and again the same thing happens, now I have lost complete funtion of all features and I have to send it in for repair. I've been using the adapter for 3 monthesw and never had a problem until today, no iPhone for a while I guess. phone lights up but only lets you read a message saying phone needs repair.

Not only do you have to deal with heat from chargers with too much juice, if you have the phone constantly looking for wi-fi and bluetooth devices, it will also add heat as well. This is why I always keep mine off all the time, especially while charging. I just do what I need with those two, then turn them off.

  • 8g Second Gen, iPod Touch wont show up on iTunes?

I use a Mac OSX, Snow Leopard.
I've tried several different chargers with my iPod, but it wont show up on iTunes. iPhoto will come up and say it's synced, and the iPod itself will show that it is charging. But it wont show up on iTunes so I can listen to my music or add songs. This is random, and has never happened before.
    Any help?

  • "Charging not supported with this accessory"

I am a long-time Apple user, and feel like I know my way around the basics. I'm afraid I have a confusing/frustrating issue and don't seem to be alone. I have a third generation iPod touch. It's about 18 months old, and does not see heavy use. It used to connect, and charge, without any problem to a Logitech Pure-Fi Elite speaker system, an FM transmitter/charger I use in my car, and a couple of portable chargers with USB ports that I use for traveling in addition to my laptop. I recently acquired a new MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. To stop the constant iTunes upgrade requests, I went ahead and ran the update. Since then, I get the "Charging not supported..." sign, with every device, though I finally got it to connect to my laptop yesterday. It will no longer accept a charge through the Logitech system, and in fact stops sending music signals after half a song when docked, and will not play through the auxiliary output at all, though it will still play through headphones, at least the scrap that I did try in my attempt to troubleshoot it. It will not charge through the car system any longer. Either there is a terrible coincidence of software upgrade and hardware failure, or somehow the software is screwing up the processes that worked fine before. I have to say, Apple upgrades often seem like more trouble than they are worth. There is always something lost when these 'improvements' are made. I am not happy.

I almost have exactly the same problem with the same iTouch generation/age.  But charging with normal Apple charging cables.  Would love an answer to this!  Thanks!
