1G iPod Shuffle charge and play

Can I plug a 1G iPod Shuffle into the UBS power adaptor wall charger AND listen to it through the headphone jack at the same time?
It may seem like a stupid question but, I'm returning my 2G iPod because it can't do both at the same time.
New sales pitch:
2G iPod Shuffle, It can't walk and chew gum!

Wrong answer, unfortunately, and your example (while
correct - it won't play when connected to a USB port)
doesn't fit the question asked.
In fact, you CAN play the 1G Shuffle through the
earphone jacks using Apple's USB charger; many folks
are doing that in any number of applications where
they're just providing background music in a business
or whatever.
It plays out of the jacks, not out of the base, and
that is why it doesn't work on the 2G model; there's
no difference between the two and no way to get to
the audio on the provided dock (making me suspect
that some ingenious German is working up a modded
dock even as we speak, something that will be a
slightly bulkier version of the current one but will
feature an earphone jack .... it should be possible
to do that).
Not all USB chargers are created equal and, while
they will charge the Shuffle just fine, the shuffle
won't play. This has to do with how the pins are
connected in the charger bases themselves, and there
are several sites on the web which tell you how you
can work around that.
Thanks, that was my suspicion and hope.
I tried fabricating a 'y' for the 2G with a 4 conductor 3.5mm female (to the iPod Shuffle dock), 4 conductor male (to the iPod Shuffle) and a 3 conductor female for audio out.
If only the dock (which was connected to the USB charger) and the 2G Shuffle were connected, the Shuffle would charge.
If only the headphones and the Shuffle were connected, the headphones work, i stereo, no problem.
BUT, once you plugged in both the headphones and the dock neither would work.
Sent the 2G back ordered the 1G and am keeping the Apple USB charger.
Thanks

  • Can you charge and play shuffle (2nd gen) at the same time?!

we purchased a shuffle to run our 'on hold' music at work, and its a pain in the arse to remember to charge it every night. im so used to my iPod video that lets me charge and play at the same time...
    any suggestions?!

    Hi Jen,
I have the USB Power Adapter plugged into a power
outlet and the shuffle plugged into the adapter. I'm
running a headphone to RCA cable to an audio
receiver's inputs. This allows me to listen to all my
songs on the Shuffle without needing to have a
computer near by. I've been using this set up since I
bought the Shuffle. I have to mention that the
Shuffle I own is 1st Gen...
    Again, hope this helps.
With all due respect, Rick, Jen (the original poster) was asking about how to charge+play a SECOND GENERATION Shuffle...you might note that fact is even included in the Subject field...
But now that you've mentioned yours is a 1st Gen Shuffle... 1st Gen Shuffles ARE available from the online Apple Store as refurbished for $49. Perhaps she should think about getting one of those?

Assuming you bought the song at the iTunes Store, you can go here
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
and follow one of the "paths" to get what you need or to an Apple customer support employee.  One path is to click Contact Support at the bottom of the list of choices, and use the Express Lane.
The iTunes app also has a way to report a problem with a purchase.  Select iTunes Store in the sidebar (of the iTunes window).  Toward the upper right corner, click on your Apple ID.  This gets you to your Account Information screen.  Find Purchase History and click See All.  On that screen, you can select a specific purchase with that problem, and Report a Problem.
If you want to try to figure out WHY that song does not play on your iPod shuffle, please post back...

  • My 4G Ipod shuffle does not play songs in the correct order? Already restored to factory settings and no success.. Can anybody help me?

My 4G Ipod shuffle does not play songs in the correct order? Already restored to factory settings and no success.. Can anybody help me?

I FINALLY GOT IT! after months of relentless synching/autofilling problems on my 4th generation i figured out the solution.
this is what i did: plugged in ipod on off mode~>manually deleting my ipod's songs~>restored factory settings~>unchecked automatic synch~>made a new playlist with exactly the songs & order i wanted for my ipod (just dragged old playlists into the new one)~>then autofilled that new playlist into my ipod. came out like a charm! (before u autofill UNCHECK random add songs)
my ipod always ended up autofilling/synching my customized playlists wrong or it would automatically do my music library (and that was way unorganized), so this worked.

  • IPod Shuffle has started playing audio books and podcasts too fast.

iPod Shuffle has started playing audio books and podcasts too fast.  What can be done?

Some other iPods (that are not shuffles) have an onboard setting to change the playback speed for some types of iTunes media, such as audiobooks.  But a shuffle has no screen, to change such settings.
First, do this to reset the shuffle, if you have not already
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
If that does not help, you may want to do a Restore on the shuffle.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the shuffle, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.  The shuffle will be like it was when new, so this problem should be fixed.

  • IPod Touch 4g won't charge and play at the same time

I used to have a 4g Nano that I would play in my car through an aux cable and charge through a cigarette lighter charger. I just got a 4th gen iPod Touch and it no longer lets me charge and play at the same time. If both wires are connected it will only charge and not play, once I pull the charger part out it will play through the speakers. Is there a fix to this? Do I need a different charger so that it won't think it's simply docked?

You would need to turn off hard drive mode via iTunes iPod settings on your home system to do this. I don't know if you have this mode on or off already. I thought I read that there is a way to enable/disable hard drive mode via the iPod buttons but I don't remember how.
    Thanks,
    Steven

Yes, first try deleing both songs.
    If still problem
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, ,make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Ipod shuffle won't play tracks in order

My ipod shuffle won't play tracks in order even when I have the shuffle button off. I have sync'd it on itunes to play in order but it just continues to shuffle all the tracks! Please help. Thanks

I found a post about this problem from November, it is apparently how the iPod Shuffle handles podcasts. It sorts them in REVERSE chronological order, and moves them to the top of the play list. It's unbelievable that Apple has let a problem like this persist for so long.
Here is the discussion I mentioned:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6259808&#6259808
It offers a way to partially fix the problem, but one that I find entirely unacceptable. The only lasting solution mentioned was to buy a different mp3 player, which I'll be doing as soon as I return my Shuffle and get my money back.
The sad thing is that in addition to Apple losing money on the sale of a Shuffle, they're also loosing money on songs I would be purchasing from iTunes (I got a $20 gift certificate for my b-day that I'm going to sell to buy other music that will play on a non-Apple mp3 player), and they might loose potential customers because I've been complaining about this to everybody I know!
    -edit-
Correction, I found a discussion dealing with this from 2005!

  • 2Gen iPod Shuffle Does Not Play .m4a Songs

My 2Gen iPod Shuffle 1GB only plays songs that I purchased from iTunes (.m4p) and will not play any songs that I ripped to iTunes (.m4a). According to iTunes, I successfully transferred 80 songs on to my Shuffle. Under the Settings tab, it shows that all the songs are loaded and I have plenty of capacity available. Under the Content tab, all my songs are listed. I have the latest software version and have reset twice with no success. My iPod Classic plays the songs fine. I appreciate any help or suggestions.

Ian - thanks for your input. My bit rate was well under the limit. This is what I've found out so far. The songs that my iPod Shuffle do not play are the (.wma) songs I converted to (.m4a) using EasyWMA. The converted songs work fine on my MacBook iTunes and iPod Classic, but not the iPod Shuffle. I contacted EasyWMA and it was suggested that I convert the selected songs to either (.mp3) or AIFF. As an experiment, I converted some (.wma) songs to AIFF using EasyWMA and had iTunes convert the AIFF files to (.m4a). Interestingly - it worked. I have no idea why the Shuffle did not recognize the EasyWMA (.m4a) direct converted songs (especially since the iPod Classic and iTunes had not problem playing them) - but apparently the iTunes conversion does something that the Shuffle software requires. Still a mystery, but at least I now have a much wider assortment of music on my Shuffle than I started out with.
    Thanks again - George

  • Does anyone know if a 3G iPod shuffle charger can charge an iPod Classic???

I just bought an iPod shuffle charger for my 3rd generation iPod shuffle and i was wondering if that charger will work for an ipod classic.

I think the confusion was because you stated "Charger" when what you were referring to was the Charging cable. From the apple support site http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3480:
These cables are compatible with the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) only and are required to charge or sync the iPod shuffle (3rd generation).
    Cheers

  • Constant, erratic beeping while charging and playing simultaneously

    Hi,
My 5th gen ipod started beeping through speakers/headphones while charging and playing at the same time. Once it has been unplugged from the ac charger and switched off/on again it is fine. This wasn't really much of a problem - a bit annoying - but as I mostly charged overnight and used during the day it didn't bother me; until now. I bought a dock with remote but as the dock automatically charges the ipod when the inserted it causes it to beep/bleep ALL the time, rendering the remote pretty useless cause i can't listen to music while it's in the dock due to the incessant beeping.
HELP! - how do I stop the beeping? Is it normal? I want to know if this is something that can't be cured before I go ahead and do something drastic like resetting my ipod completely...

there appears to be no solution...if yours does it you're stuck with it, as am I. :I

  • Clicking sound when charging and playing

My ipod makes a really weird clicking sound when it's charging and playing music and videos either though the clicker isn't on.

I have tried just about everything very methodicly.
Got Tune Tech for iPod software and cleaned everything, tried the diagnostic mode to see if everything was OK. I was thinking on the lines of some sort of macanical/electronic failure (SDRAM) but everything was all right
So I plunged in and retrograded to firmware 1.2 and VOILA !
The instructions found on MacIntouch were very simple and easy to do.
My faithfull 5G iPod is back to good working order....for now !
    No more freeze when charging.
I hope Apple will adress this firmware problem in the next update.

  • My ipod shuffle hesitates before playing songs..

on my shuffle some of my songs .. like songs by certan cd's that i have added to my itunes.. ( one example is all of my lincon park cds and one of my system of a down cd's) will take about 40 seconds to begin playing on my ipod shuffle.. and i cant just skip over it i must wait and then i can.. what can i do to fix this?? please help
    Thanks in advance

Why would I be "hostile"?  I'm just having trouble believing what you describe is actually happening.
To figure out what is happening, please answer the specific questions.  Did you actually TIME the playback using an independent timer of some type?  You keep saying it is "slower," but that can be influenced by perception.  Timing how long it takes to play the song (in iTunes on computer and on shuffle) is definite proof that cannot be influenced by perception.
(Pick a test song that has a definite end point, not one that fades out, so you can easily tell where the "end" is on both the iTunes playback and shuffle playback.)
So...  These are the questions that may help solve the mystery.
What does iTunes say is the song's length?
Using your independent timer, how long does it take to play the song in iTunes?  Since the comparison is with a shuffle, after starting the playback, do not look at the screen to determine when the song ends.
Using the same timer, how long does it take to play the song using your shuffle?
The timer does not need to be super-precise.  It can be a wall clock or wristwatch with a second hand.  You just need to time it to within a second or two.
