1g = only 187 songs?

I've been reading, but am even more confused. My nano is only holding 187 songs, 12.6 hours of music, 887.7 mb is used. Where's the rest of my space? I read a few things about bitrates, but I just am not getting it.. can anyone explain this is easier to understand terms? do i need to somehow convert all my music?
I use my Nano for music only.
Thanks!

You aren't missing any space.
The Apple 1GB Nano is advertised as having a capacity of 1 Billion Bytes.
Since a true binary megabyte (MB) is actually 1,048,576 bytes, the actual unformatted capacity of the 1GB Nano is really about 953MB.
Since the iPod operating system, formatting and extras take up a small amount of space... you are left with about 892MB of usable space for your content.
Apple estimates that you can fit about 240 tracks on the 1GB Nano, if all of those tracks are 128kpbs AAC files of about 4 minutes each.
Since you can only fit about 187 songs, this means that your tracks are either encoded at a bitrate higher than 128kbps, longer than 4 minutes each on average, or a combination of both.
I don't think you're doing anything wrong. If you want to fit more tracks on the iPod, you might want to convert to a lower bitrate on any high-bitrate tracks you might have. Doing this will result in lower audio quality.
It's really your choice.

I just subscribed to iTunes match but only 61 songs from my 7GB of music on my iphone showed up.  I do not want to lose any music.  What should i do?  When I go to settings-music-and try to enable iTunes Match on my iPhone it says "iTunes Match will replace the music library on this device"  I don't want to do that it only has 61 of my 7GB of songs.

did you find out the answer?  I am afraid to hit enable.

  • HT1386 My I phone used to play music that I had downloaded from Cds to my computer, but since the last update,my phone only plays songs that I bought on itunes.  It still shows I have all my old music but won't play any of it.  What's going on?

Ok, so I synched my iphone 4 to my computer recently and now when I go to play music on my phone, only the songs I've bought on Itunes play.  I put all of my music collection that is in CD form on my computer and it used to play on my phone too, but now it just skips those songs.  They still play on my computer though.  I've been trying to figure out what the problem is for over three days or so and am about to loose my friggin mind! Can anyone help me?

De-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). Now re-sync your music.

  • When I try to sync my iPod with iTunes I can't because it says it's over capacity. It's not. It's a 16 GB iPod, it's only 105 songs on there. No movies or pictures or such. Anybody got a word of advise?

Anybody got a word of advise? I've tried resetting the iPod but get the message that it's not possible cause i'm not connected to internet. I am though. Tried managing music manually. I've tried all the usual stuff.

Go to Settings > General > Usage and see how much is shown available and how much is in "Other".

  • After upgrading to IOS 5.0.1 my music and movies are gone - I have only one song.  Sync does not put my media back

I upgraded my Iphone4 to IOS 5.0.1 when plugged into my fully-patched OS X Lion-version Mac.  I  no longer have any movies and only one song on my phone.  Itunes says I have all of my movies and music, but my phone does not show it.  I do have my books (but not audiobooks)

I made a work around.  Set my phone to not sync music and movies in itunes.  Sync phone.  Set my phone to sync music and movies in itunes.  Sync phone.
It is very time consuming though.
And, what else is set incorrectly somewhere and I do not know it?  There was also a very weird glitch - where "Albums" is listed in when running the music app in IOS5 (5.0.1), it instead had had the name of the one song!  That is now also fixed.

  • After upgrading to IOS 7, I can only transfer songs to my iPhone 5 that I bought on iTunes. Cannot xfer songs I burned from CD.

After upgrading to IOS 7, I can only transfer songs to my iPhone 5 that I bought on iTunes. I cannot transfer songs I burned from CD. When I drag them to my phone in iTunes, my phone appears to be updating, but the songs don't show up there.
    I'm using IOS 7.1.2 and iTunes 11.3.0.54. WIndows 7.
    Thanks.

This has worked for many folks according to the feedback I have gotten:
Un-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). Now re-sync your music.

  • How come I can't add a song to my playlists in itunes match? Is it me or itunes match? It keeps on coming up with a message " iCloud playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud music library. If you continue, the playlist will be removed from iCloud

How come I can't add a song to my playlists in itunes match? Is it me or itunes match? It keeps on coming up with a message " iCloud playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud music library. If you continue, the playlist will be removed from iCloud and will only be available on this computer"?
You must surely be able to add and subtract songs on specific playlist?

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

  • Only purchased songs syncing in playlists, other info syncing wrong. Help!

I've been using iTunes for a while, since getting my first video iPod in 2006, so I'm not a newbie.  I've switched computers more than once and I've gotten used to rebuilding my library, etc.  Recently got a new computer and moved all my music over (with a lot of information missing, that's a post for another time). I created a couple of new playlists and went to sync them to my phone so I could listen to it.  And that's where the trouble started.
First, old music wouldn't come off my phone.  I ended up deleting the entire music library and syncing again.  One playlist was supposed to have about 100 songs, but only 40 of them showed up on the phone.  The other playlist has about 20 songs, TWO of which made it to the phone.  That's when I realized that those 42 songs that made it are songs I purchased from iTunes.  All the other songs on the playlist had come from CDs.  So only the songs I purchased from iTunes synced over to my phone.
HOWEVER, I manually moved over an album I had ripped from a CD.  It shows up just fine on my phone.  (Though I just did it again, and it moved over 11 of the 13 songs on the album, and while iTunes shows the artist, on my iPhone it says "Unknown Artist" even though it shows the cover art. So that's not good.)
I have iTunes set to manage everything manually, so I can just drag & drop the music I want onto the phone, and that's what worked just fine on the computer I had before.  But it's not working now.  iTunes says there are 193 songs on my phone.  My phone says there are 137.
Am I missing something?  The only difference is that this new computer runs Windows 8.  Does anyone have any idea why everything's all screwy?  About the only thing I haven't done is uninstall & reinstall iTunes (which would be a massive undertaking since I have a pretty big library) or restore my phone (which would also take a while, so I'm hoping there's another solution before I do that.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks@

I'm having the same problem with my ipod touch...let me know if you get a response!

  • Family shares an itunes account and ALL songs loaded on my phone with ios 7. how do I get only my songs?

My family shares an itunes account and ALL their songs loaded on my phone with ios 7 upgrade. Previously, while I could SEE songs "Not on this iPhone" they did not reside on my phone.  How do I get only my songs?  Do I have to sync with my computer?  Help...

This is sad, as I am replying to myself. Upon further review I see that while all songs are LISTED, that are not actually there.  By going to Settings - iTunes & App Store - "Show All" I was able to "turn off" SEEING purchases not made on my phone.  Solved my own problem, but the way it looks in IOS 7 is confusing.

  • I have multiple itunes accounts and had to do a restore.  I can only see songs from one of the itunes accounts on my new iphone.

My old iphone died on me so I had to purchase a new one.  A guy at the Apple store helped me with a restore via iCloud.  I have two itunes accounts, one for US and another for oversea itunes.  I only see songs I purchased in US itunes on my new iphone, which is my iCloud account ID as well.  How do I have the songs I purchased in another foreign itunes to also appear on my new phone?

Are those songs in the iTunes library on the computer the device is normally synced with?  If so, sync them to the device.

  • I have iTunes Match, but some of the music I loaded from CDs and I can see in the iTunes store won't play. It recognizes the album but is playing literally the only 3 songs I don't want to listen to.

How do I get to play all of my music that should be stored either on the computer or in the cloud?

    Hi,
Initially your music should be in your iTunes library on your computer. Once match completes its scan, your music will have been matched or uploaded. I suggest that you add iCloud status column to song view. This will tell you what has been matched, uploaded, purchased, inelligible, duplicate or waiting. What is the status of your tracks that are not playing.
If space is not an issue, I suggest that you keep the music on the internal hard drive otherwise you can delete the tracks and play from cloud. In both instances, you should maintain a back up of all your music on a separate hard drive.

I'm sorry to see that no one has answered this. I'm hoping Apple with reply to my support request, as I'm having the same issue. I really don't want to continue with iCloud at this point.

  • IPhone plays only one song at a time

After 2 weeks of the iPod feature of my iPhone working just perfectly, last night I discovered it will no longer go through a play list. No matter what I do, it plays only one song, repeatedly - either a song I choose or a song selected randomly by hitting Shuffle. Shuffle only chooses the first song randomly, after which that song plays over and over unless I manually choose another. I deleted my playlists this morning, rebooted iTunes, re-synced my playlists to the iPhone, same problem. Other than having to go through an entire Restore, are there any other options? This actually occurred out of the blue, NOT after a re-sync with the computer, therefore NOT caused by the iTunes update to 7.3.1.

THANK YOU!!! I never would have found that myself because I don't even look at albums let alone play whole albums. My playlists are favorite songs from here and there and rarely more than one or two from any particular album. I don't know how that got changed since I have never looked at an album before, didn't know there were time and shuffle markers. I must have gone bump in the dark... so thank you again!

  • Playback no longer continuous - only one song at a time

I used to select a playlist and then hit play, and I'd get playback of random songs continuously. Now I have to select a song to get it to play, and only one song plays. I've tried adjusting the shuffle commands and turning shuffle on and off, but no luck. Any suggestions on how to restore continuous playback, either randomly (shuffle) or continuously (album or playlist)?

Make sure all the tracks have the box checkmarked. To check them all at once, hold the CTRL key and check any one of the boxes.
