1GB memory failure with XP Pro

HI there,
I have a Celeron 800 running XP Pro on a MS 6368 motherboard. Everything is OK with 512MB of ram, but if I put in the 2nd DIMM to make 1GB ram, the system runs slowly, and keeps crashing out to the "Blue screen of Death"
THe only PCI card I have installed is the Sounndblaster Audigy Platinum
Both of the DIMM strips work OK by themselves.
Any suggestions ?
Steely ..

http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/testreport/6368/memory.htm
so in theory 2 x 512 work
http://www.memtest86.com will test ram
possible the extra juice the second dimm needs has gone over what your psu can supply

  • Continuing Hardware Failure with Macbook Pro

Before I explain my situation I'd like to mention that I'm very careful with my things and my mac has not sustained liquid or any other damage.
About a month ago my Late 2011 release Macbook Pro experienced some hardware failure, specifically concerning the built-in keyboard, it has been 2 weeks since I received it from repairs and it has now experienced hard drive failure, I went on to erasing the hdd and reinstalling the os, it appears to be working fine but I'm concerned that it may experience more problems in the future.
I bought my Macbook Pro this past November and I feel that it may have been defective as it has experienced these problems in such a short amount of time. Is there any way that apple can replace my Macbook Pro for a new one?

No. After 14 days from purchase Apple reserves the right to repair or replace at their option. Thus far you've had a keyboard failure. Your HDD is working and nothing else has happened. You have no evidence to suggest the computer is defective since it has had only one hardware failure. I'd say you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

  • X230t usb3.0 failure with win8 pro x64

I have x230t with win8 64bit. However, somehow both usb3.0 ports cannot identify any usb3.0 device but can identify and install usb2.0 devices. In the device management, it shows Intel  usb 3.0 eXternsible Host Controller - 0100(Microsoft), the driver version: 6.2.9200.16628. I uninstall it several times and restart the laptop, it still dos not work. Can any one provide a comprehensive solution to this issue? (I remember a period ago, it works fine with 3.0 devices) thanks for help.

It also has usb3.0 driver compatibility issue. I tied to install usb3.0 again, it pops up a window showing there is a compatibility issue with Intel usb3.0 extensible usb controller driver. and when I download the driver from intel website, it shows that the system does not meet the minimum required for the installation. Can any solve this issue? thanks.

  • Airport Memory Failure on McBook Pro

Whenever i start my laptop the airport is not connecting automatically.
Each time I have to go into network preferences, connect to network and it connects straightaway, the problem is that I know it should automatically connect when i turn it on as the airport is on.
    Any suggestions?

BKL, welcome to the discussion area!
Not sure if you have already done this because your post did not include any troubleshooting steps that you may have already taken. Check the following settings on your Mac:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
You may need to click the lock at the lower left to change settings
    Open Network
Click on AirPort on the left side to highlight it
Click Advanced at the lower right
Make sure that the network that you want to connect to is at the top of the connection list. Drag it to the top if needed
Enter a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined"
No other boxes should be checked
    Click OK, then click Apply

  • Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card

I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
    Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products.

  • Mixing a 1GB memory (DDR3 1067Mhz) with a 4gb (DDR3 1333MHZ)

    hi there
i currently have 2gb (2x1) ddr3 1067mhz on my macbook pro. I'm thinking of upgrading it to 5gb, so I would take off one of the 1gb memories and insert a 4gb one.
problem (?) is, the 1gb memory is 1067 and the 4gb one is 1333. when I asked the seller (on ebay) about this, this is what he replied:
"Hello thanks for contacting us. The brand we use
is Dane-Elec and the memory speed is 1333MHz but
they are backwards compatible to clock back to
    1067MHz no problem."
First of all, is this possible ? And even if it is, he probably doesn't know I'm mixing a 1067Mhz memory with a 1333mhz one.. can anyone clarify this for me ? Thank you !
    Rick.

While that's technically right, it's wrong for the mac.
True enough, I didn't try too hard to downclock the memory on my trials, because I believe it's just not possible to do on the mac. Anyway I've managed to do 3 experiments proving that 1333 just won't run on a core 2 duo made to work with 1066.
    1. 2x 2GB 1333 Kingston - crash
    2. 1GB 1067 original with my mac + 4GB 1333 OCZ - works
    3. 2x 4GB 1333 OCZ - crash
The Bus Speed will always stay at 1.07 GHz and the Memory Speed, if matched with another 1333, will stay at 1333, and will crash your system. It WON'T work at all!
At other hand, if you join 4GB 1333 with 1GB 1067, the bigger and faster one will automatically downclock to adjust and everything will work just fine. You'll sure lose the dual channel, but it's worth it (strictly technically speaking, not considering market and costs).

How do I get more memory for my Macbook Pro spring 2010 13-inch with 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Apple says no memory currently available for that model. I have 4 GB memory and 3.99 used. Help!

    $45.99
Also what do you mean that actual memory is 16GB but with Apple it's 8?
When I go to the "About this Mac" it says Memory 4G 1067 MHz DDR3, then when I go to System Report it says
     Memory Slot
    Bank 0/ DIMM0 2G DDR3 1067 MHZ OK
    Bank 1/ DIMM0 2G DDR3 1067 MHZ OK
Sorry I'm clueless. Just don't want to buy something that messes up my machine more than it already is.
The Crucial site appears to have recommended the correct spec 4gB RAM stick for your model. Please note that you will need to remove the existing sticks of RAM to install new, so you will need 2x4gB to get to 8gB.
When your model of computer was designed/built, it was tested with readily available 2x4gB (8gB). After release RAM retailers have tested it with higher amounts, and Apple didn't update their quoted specs.

  • In attempting to install recommended software updates I get a message saying my startup disc is full.  I have an Intel-based desktop with 1GB memory.  What can I safely remove?

In attempting to install recommended software updates I get a message that my startup disc is full.  I have an iMac (intel-based) with 1GB memory.  I suspect my iTunes library is using up much of the space (I have no movies installed and have already copied most of my photos to a DVD to free up space).  If I follow the instructions to move my iTunes library to an external HD (can I use a flash drive?) will I have enough working memory to plug it back in for use when I want to access the library?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Moving libraries off the boot disk while doable is not very viable.  It creates many new problems in backing up your data, as now you have more than one source to backup.    See my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
My suggestion is to get at least two copies of all your essential data in one manner or another, and get a larger boot hard drive to replace what you currently use to be able to consolidate your libraries.
As for cleaning space, see my FAQ*:

  • What photo gallery can I use for a Mac OS X version 10.6.8 with 1GB memory?

what photo gallery can I use for a Mac OS X version 10.6.8 with 1GB memory?

What do you mean by photo gallery?  Are you referring to what version of the iPhoto application?  What version came with your iMac?
iPhoto 8.1.2 would be a good choice for that system and limited amount of memory.  It comes on the iLife 09 disc which is available from 3rd party vendors like Amazon.com or eBay.com.
If you can add memory to your iMac do so.  Increasing memory to 4 GB will do wonders for the speed of the system and applications.

  • Can I expand the RAM of an Equium M50 with 1GB memory module?

Someone told me that Equium M50 only recognise 512 MB memory module. The Toshiba manual does not specify. It is true?
    Thank you for any help
    Cheers

    Hi Francisco
No, this is not correct. The guy who told this was not right and I assume he has no Equium A50 experience.
As far as I know the memory on Equium A50 notebook can be upgraded up to 2048MB.
So you have to use 2 x 1024MB (1GB) memory modules if you want to upgrade the memory to 2GB.
For me its clear. The Equium A50 recognizes bigger memory size as 512MB.
Do you know what modules are compatible and can be used???
On the Toshiba Options & Accessories website you will find the supported modules:
    PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-2M51)
    PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-2M1G)
    I hope I was clear enough ;)

  • IMac G5 system hang - 2 bad 1GB memory modules?

I am experiencing intermittent system hangs, requiring power off / on to recover. Applications run fine for hours, then everything freezes; a few seconds later the fans spool up full bore. There seems to be no logic to the failure. It happens on many different applications, including Disk Utility. No new software has been added recently (other than Apple software updates). This has been occuring for several weeks.
I repair permissions & run disk verify. When disk utility runs completely without hanging (on verify), everything is ok.
Applecare had me trash the ~/Library/Caches & system caches. No joy. They recommended archive & install beginning with Panther. Reinstall went ok until downloading updates for 10.4.8, then hang (might this suggest a hardware prob?).
Rebooted in target firewire mode the cloned drive, then zero'ed the G5 HDD and restored from clone (SuperDuper!). Everything appeared ok for several days, then the same system hang reappeared. I should mention that in the course of sudying this one, I discovered Virex 7.5 was sucking the processing life from the G5; used the uninstaller to get rid of it & the iMac is quiet again!
I have run the Applecare version of Techtools and the Hardware Test Disk, everything passes.
I could do a clean install of Tiger, then use migration assistant to move data from the clone...if I felt it had a chance to solve it. On the other hand, maybe its a flaky hardware gremlin and I'm wasting my time doing reinstalls, and I should hustle it over to the local Apple store.
Update - took iMac for service at Apple store where it failed under stress test with my 2 GB of memory but ran for an extended period with Apple memory. In an attempt to isolate which of the two 1 GB modules was bad, removed one module. Identical failure after 24 hrs. Howver, swapping out that failing module with the second module, identical hand. That suggests either both 1 GB modules are bad (unikely), or some other hardware issue is the problem.
Problem seems to occur most often when starting playing iTunes, or running Disk Utility (repair permissions).
I suppose the next step is to buy 1 GB of memory from Apple and make it fail again. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your posts, I appreciate it.
Skip - I tried a spare keyboard & mouse. Still failed.
MGW - all software is up to date.
DaddyPaycheck - I downloaded memtestosx. It fails testing each 1GB memory module separately (in different sockets). I'm running in multiuser mode and when it fails the entire iMac freezes up (just like it always does), requiring power off / power on. Is this normal behavior when the memtestosx test fails?
I will plan to test in single user mode as the supplied doc states that if the onboard cache is failing it would pass singleuser (cache apparently disabled in singleuser mode) but fail multiuser. Maybe the onboard cache is bad?
    Thanks.

  • UPGRADING AND MIXING MEMORY ON MY MAC PRO QUAD CORE DUAL 2.8 (Xeon)?

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro Quad Core Dual 2.8GHz (Xeons) with 4GB of memory (2 x 1GB Apple modules + 2 x 1GB other brand - Shown as "Manufacturer 0x855D") and now I want to fill the other 4 memory slots by adding an additional 16GB (4 x 4GB modules) for a total of 20GB of RAM.
    My 2 questions are:
1.- In which order/pattern should I install these new 4 X 4GB modules along with my original Apple 2 x 1GB modules and the "Manufacturer 0x855D" 2 x 1GB modules the best way (for better performance)? - I have heard stories that if I do it improperly, I could slow down my Mac Pro...
This is how I have them configured right now:
    Raiser A / DIMM 1 = 1GB (Manufaturer "0x830B") - I assume this is the Apple memory, right?
    Raiser A / DIMM 2 = 1GB (Manufaturer "0x830B")
    Raiser A / DIMM 3 = Empty
    Raiser A / DIMM 4 = Empty
    Raiser B / DIMM 1 = 1GB (Manufacturer "0x855D") - How can I find which manufacturer is this?
    Raiser B / DIMM 2 = 1GB (Manufacturer "0x855D")
    Raiser B / DIMM 3 = Empty
    Raiser B / DIMM 4 = Empty
2.- What brand would be most compatible to work with my Apple 2GB (2 x 1GB) factory memory? Kingston? Crucial? Mushkin? iRam? Corsair? OWC? (Does OWC sell their own brand? or which one do they carry?-its not specified on their web)
Thank you so much in advance for all your help!

Ram should be installed minimally in matched pairs and optimally in matched quads. This means the memory modules are the same size and specifications. They should also be equipped with the Apple-certified style of heat sink.
Brand really doesn't mean much as long as they work.
