1Ghz G4 17" powerbook experience

I have just upgraded my 4 year old 17" G4 powerbook to leopard (family pack)
Here is the specs on my MAC
Model Name: PowerBook G4 17"
Model Identifier: PowerBook5,1
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Processor Speed: 1 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.6.2f1
It upgraded OK but it did take a few days of restarts to smooth out some kinks. Initially I had to delete a bunch of unused files and applications to make room for it as my 60 Gig HD was almost maxed out. I have currently 47.9 Gigs used and 6.10 left available with more to come once I do another secure empty trash of the more files and apps that I deleted. (Boy I didn't realize how much unused software was on my mac from over the years)
I have my photo's on an external HD and am thinking of moving my Itunes collection there too.
Anyways as I write this I am not getting any typing stuttering like some have mentioned and I have Mail, Safari (6 windows) Activity monitor, Iphoto,Ichat,Itunes and a few finder windows open.
On my initial install of Leopard I did get stuck on startup on the blue screen and then a few times later it hung up just before it gets to the login screen. But now 4 days later I have not had any startup problems.
I also had my airport connection suddenly disappear twice on me with no bars and it came back on a restart and now has been running smoothly again. I do get the spinning beachball at times but had that before as well if I had to many windows open.
I am still getting into exploring all the upgrades and what they have to offer to me. When I did my fifth restart and had my external Lacie HD hooked up Leopard immediately opened Time Machine and started a back up. It had the time start for back up at 6:30 pm and I never did figure out how you change the time for daily or weekly back ups. (any help here?)
I do have one question will I still need the original "BACK UP" application or can I get rid of it now that I have Time machine?
As for other things on Leopard the fanning files off the dock are cool and also the new scrolling feature in finder is also pretty cool when looking for a file. Mail also has a few new features which I have yet to get into.
Anyways so far so good with Leopard on an older G4 machine. I also did my wife's newer intel macbook and it went flawlessly on hers. I also intend to my older daughters macbook and younger daughters Ibook G4 as well. I think having extra ram makes a big difference especially on the older G4's

Having the exact same PB as yours, your post was extremely useful! Thanks!
I wonder how you're doing with the 10.5.2 update.

  • My 1Ghz 17inch G4 Powerbook LCD is broken.  Anyone know how much to replace

Hi, I accidentaly broke my friends 17inch 1ghz G4 powerbook and I was woundering how much would it coast to send it back to apple to repaire it? Or anyone know how much it coast to order a new 17inch LCD for it? Help please.

I believe Apple charges about 1200$ to replace the screen. Prob more than the 1ghz machine is even worth. There are a few companies online that charge between 700 and 800 bucks to do the repair also. A used screen offa ebay will set you back between $250 and $350. But its no easy chore to split open the top case, let alone take apart half the machine to replace. Your best bet is probably looking for a 17" PB on ebay with a bad logic board and other striped of parts and swapping out the whole top. Then selling whats left on ebay and recouping a couple of $$.

  • Installing OS9 on a Powerbook G4 1Ghz

OK, I have the original DVD for my G4 Powerbook 1Ghz. The powerbook has OS X 10.4.5 installed, as well as many OSX applications. OS 9, nor OS 9 in classic mode are installed on the Powerbook.
When I open "Install Applications & Mac OS 9" on the DVD (I am not starting up from the DVD as per the instructions on the DVD), and click on the hard drive to install the software, it tells me that the choosen volume contains software that is newer than the software I am installing and says it will replace the newer software with the older. (Fine with me, as far as OS 9 goes) I click continue to install the software and it tells me I cannot continue becaues there is nothing to install. I have checked in OS X System Preferences, Startup Disk and there is only OS X 10.4.5. OS 9 is not there. What can I do to get OS 9 installed on this powerbook without initializing the hard drive and starting over? I do not want classic mode.

    Hi, Chuck -

The largest drive out there that will fit in your Powerbook is 160GB. I have a seagate 160GB drive in my 1GHz 17 inch PowerBook. Newegg lists it for $109.99.

No you cannot use a SATA drive.

  • A solution for Navigation Menu Problems

Many people have been complaining about iWeb messing up its rollover navigation menus at the top of each webpage. This phenomenon usually occurs when one has an existing site, and attempts to add another page to the site, thus requiring the menu at the top to be changed. What you will see if you visit the page is an incorrect navigation menu. The item may be cropped funny. Or it will show the wrong item name for a particular link. Or you will see duplicate names. Or the rollovers won't match the unhilited item names.
There seems to be a problem that sometimes occurs in which iWeb is unable to overwrite the previous versions of the navigation menus on your page up on the .Mac volume. If you run into this problem, this is how you fix it.
    - Log into you iDisk. Navigate the folders to get to the offending page folder. The path will be Web/Sites/iWeb/your page name/your page name_files/
    - Inside this folder you will see a series of png images which begin with navbar_. Select them all, and drag them to your trash can. They will be immediately deleted.
    - Return to iWeb, and publish your page again. This will replace the navbar images with the updated versions.
This seems to work reliably. Anyone else have any experience with this technique?

    Narly
There are various different approaches to this, which one really works, anyones guess!
The number one suspect is the cahing on the .mac servers, see my site, my bar is all over the place I made the changes last night! (Or the cahce of your own isp)
    Peviously discussed options:
    1. Clear your browser cahce, a few times!
    2. Get someone else to hit you site, I did and I saw "menu look watch watch contact"
    3. Using inspector, Page Tab, uncheck the box "Include page in navigation menu", publish your site, then recheck the boxes and republish.
    4. Make a change to each page, move an image one pixel left and then back again and republish.
    5. Press the Option key, between the ctrl + Apple key, while you select Publish, it changes Publish to Publish All Pages, kind of a forced refresh.
But generally its trial and error, and time!

  • Create a photo page and have the photo's link to other internal pages

really basic quesiton, sorry but I can't do this for some reason. I created a photo page that is going to be a menu page to link to some internal pages. for some reason the Enable as a Hyperlink is greyed out and I can't click on it to make the image a hyperlink.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks

What you need to do is place a shape over the top of the image, then using Inspector, Graphic Tab give it an Opacity of 1% then you can make the shape a hyperlink.
The imageholders on the photo page cannot be used as hyperlinks.
Alos you must giv ethe shape an opacity of at least 1%, if you try 0% it will not work.

  • When I connect imac to network via airport all devices on the network lose internet connectivity

Every device stays connected to the network but the internet stops working. Usually the network will continue to function normally for about five minutes when the imac connects, but then every device loses internet access via the network, NOT just the imac. As soon as I turn off the imac's airport they get internet connectivity back. A wired network connection to the imac seems to work OK.
The airport is configured as "Using DHCP"
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
As far as I know, no changes have been made to the computer recently (but it is not my machine and the owner isn't here atm)
I found one other resource with the same problem here:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/internet-networking-wireless/183185-turning-my- macbook-airport-breaks-internet-connection-entire-network.html
but the solution didn't work. When I deleted the three files mentioned in the solution in that thread, my problem is not solved.
If you have any ideas or need more information I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks guys.

Yes it is possible that the two machines are creating a Computer-to-Computer network and are not going through the Express.
To delete the Alias you may need to login with the Admin User.

  • Imbedded link to downloadable .PDF file not working in Safari

    Two questions:
I imbedded a text link that is supposed to download a .PDF file from my iDisk. However, when I click the text link from my Safari browser I get this error message:
"“A network error occurred while accessing this document on the Internet. Would you like to close the document or reload it?”
When I retry by pasting my iWeb published page into Mozilla, the linked file downloads quickly with no problem. However, when I paste it into Internet Explorer's browser, it takes about 4 minutes to download!
Second question: I can't seem to link an image that I inserted on a "My Photos" template page. There is no way to select the image--when I do, it just shows the "blue box" around the image but it doesn't actually select the image itself so I can link it.
I was able to link images in my .Mac pages so I don't know why I can't on iWeb.
If anyone wants to try it, here is the link to that page. ONLY CLICK ON THE BERMUDA AMEX TRAVEL PLANNER TEXT as that is the only link I've imbedded thus far. This page is obviously still under construction.

This is correct, you cannot make the image holders hyperlinks. The solution is to put a Shape over the top of the image that you want to be a link, then Opn Inspector, Graphic Link and make the Opacity 1%, no more no less. Then make this shape a link. Beware that this image will still display in a slideshow and if you insert more images and it moves, the shape will not move with it.
You may also want to click on the shape and then go Arrange > Bring to Front.

  • Glitch in Graphic Inspector for Photo Template?

When I create a slideshow using iWeb, using the "Photo" template the "reflection" option is grayed out in the graphic inspector, and the default is set to having a reflection. I really, really don't want a reflection - yet I cannot opt to change it. Why is this?
The other templates to not seem to have this problem.
    Thanks!
    Jane

    Hi Jane
Yes we are trying to open the file, I dont know of any reason why you can't..... unless for some reason Keychain is not allowing access to the disk, but the fact that you can see it would suggest that it is.
Another option, drag Taco to your dock, if its not there already (so that you can launch it from here).
Next, find your slideshow.html file and drag it onto the Taco icon and Taco should launch and open the file.

  • Using photo comments in iWeb

I typed in all of my descriptions to my photos as comments in iPhoto and then tried to post to iWeb but it didn't use the comments. Is there a way instead of retyping all of the desciptions?

    Welcome Jerkill
There is a tutorial here that goes through Exporting from iPhoto to a folder, and then into iWeb.
What you need to look at in iPhoto is:
File > Export: Then play with the settings on the File Export Tab, maybe the Web Page tab, it has a comments box.
Once you have set these, then I beleive that whatever you choose becomes the default until you change it.

  • *** Publishing only one iweb site to .mac

I have a number of different sites creates in iWed that I normally upload to my own server and NOT my .mac account. I would like to clear my .mac space to 0 and then upload 1 of my entire movies there. I'd like to create the backdrop in iweb and publish this entire movie to my .mac account but I know that if I just go file>publish to .mac, that all my pages will upload to .mac.
Is there a manual way to control this? Ideally I'm hoping it's possible within iweb, but I'm guessing it's not. If it's not, will it work if I publish my pages to a folder, and then select my movie .html and files folder and manually drop them into my idisk/movies folder? Will that then publish only my movie site to my .mac account?
I'm not at the office today, so I'm just wondering if someone can give me a heads up if this may work. I'm trying to research in advance!
    Thanks everyone!

    Hi
Your iWeb sites are contained in a domain.sites file, which lives here:
    User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites
To separate sites, you need to have seperate domain files. You can do this by simply creating a second User Account on your Mac and creating the website there, and then use Publish to .mac.
Or you can swap out the domain files manually or use something like Domains Juggler, from Cyclosaurus.
There is some more info. on the How2 page of my site, www.willg4pb.com.

  • Yet another script for Cyclosaurus to write (please)!

There are lots of posts about people losing their domain files, I myself in fact lost a page (Thanks Jim!) and had to rebuild it.
This spurred me to create backups of my domain files, that I manually juggle! (As well as a full system backup, one was due)
Then I thought to myself, wouldn't it be nice if there was an app that you could click, and it would take a copy of your current domain.sites file, add a time and date stamp to the name, and then store it in ~/iWeb Domain Back Ups?
    Anyway, just a thought
    Will

    Folks
I am seeing lots of issues regarding corrupt & lost websites.
I can only strongly recommend that you BACK UP your work.
Backing up should be a standard routine, yes even on a Mac
With regards to keeping a copy of your nice shiny new iWeb website, this thread discusses keeping a second copy on your hard drive. This will not save you if your hard drive fails, for this you need to backup elsewhere (For instance an external hard drive).
The key iWeb file (domain.sites) is stored here:
    User / Library / Application Support / iWeb / domain.sites
Either manually create a copy of this site and save it somewhere safe, or use the Script above.
    Happy iWebbing

  • Problem with Acrobat Hyperlinks to packaged PDF's not working when moved to PC platform

    Hello,
I'm having a little issue with the new Acrobat CC.
I have a master PDF presentation that includes Hyperlinks (set up in Acrobat) that link to external pdf files (packaged in a sub-folder from the source PDF file).
On a number of macs they work fine, opening in Acrobat / Reader. But when transferred to a PC platform the link clicks but none of the files are opening.
I'm geting no dialogue boxes or error messages, just does nothing.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Airport only works on certain computers...

I have two APX and two AX. Even if I use just one APX still only my 15in powerbook will have inernet. My other computers (G4 Cube, and two older iBooks) will recognize my network, but in the network status pane in system preferences it registers yellow (may not be able to connect to the internet). Where as on my powerbook it is green.
I am pretty savy with the network and have rebooted and reset the entire thing many of times. What is the problem?

One suggestion could be that somehow the mode has changed from 802.11b/g to just 802.11g. This would stop the older machines using the network, although I do believe that they may still see it.
Applications > Utilities > Airport Admin Utility > Airport Tab > Mode (At the bottom)
Make sure that the mode is set to 802.11 b/g compatible.
