1GHz vs 867MHz vs Dual 500MHz

Hi,
Im in the progress to upgrade my Sawtooth 400Mhz. Here's what I'm looking at:
-Single 1GHz (OWC upgrade)
-Single 867Mhz (from Quicksilver)
-Dual 500MHz (from Digital Audio)
Wonder which to go for. My main usage will be DTP work (ie Adobe CS). Used to work on my 1GHz PB 15", and I'm happy with it.
Please leave your comment. Which will you go for?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
The one from OWC will work (if you mean the Mercury Extreme). Three screws, change CPU's, put the screws back in, startup.
The next one will work, but needs some difficult changes. Different bus speeds - 133 vs 100.
Third will work, but again, not a direct swap. Different bus speeds - 133 vs 100.
Look here as well, same as OWC Mercury Extreme:

  • Does dual-500MHz count as 1GHz? (minimum system requirement)

Time to replace the ole B$W G3 so my daughter can use Garage Band and iDVD. I'm lookin' at a used Dual-500MHz G4, but iDVD '06 needs a minimum of 733MHz processor.
My math ain't all that strong, but 500 times two exceeds 733. I can't find anywhere on Apple's site where they use this same math... so I'm nervous.
Anybody point me to a definitive Apple statement clarifying or asterisking this dual-factor when calculating processor speed?

  • Converting a G4 400mhz to a dual 500mhz?

Hi i was just wondering if it would be possible to convert my 400mhz G4 into a dual 500mhz.. will it fit ... :/

no, you will not be able to easily convert your 400mhz computer to a dual 500mhz. it would require a completely different logic board.

  • Installing Dual 500mhz Processor from G4

I have a B&W G3 that currently has a 400mhz processor. I just salvaged a Dual 500mhz processor from a dying Powermac G4. How can I replace the processor? Will it work? thanks.

That dual G4 processor uses the 300-pin rectangular connector. The processor board is much larger, and is installed with three or four screws over as many posts on the motherboard.
The Blue & White G3 processors, like the beige G3 before them, and the very first "PCI-graphics" G4, use a 305-pin nearly square pin grid array inserted into a ZIF socket.
They are not compatible, and the signals have been changed -- there are no adapters.

  • Trying to upgrade from dual 500MHz to single processor

    Question 1
My Mac G4 GE has a dual 500 Mhz processor installed. Is it possible to upgrade to a 7447, 7448 or 7455 single processor or do I have to stay with a dual processor for my G4 to work?
    Question #2
Can you tell me when the upgrade will not help anymore since my G4 has a 100Mhz Bus or maybe any other hardware that will limit the processor up to a certain speed?
    Thank you guys

    Hi-
Is it possible to upgrade to a 7447, 7448 or 7455 single processor
    Yes.
do I have to stay with a dual processor for my G4 to work?
    No.
maybe any other hardware that will limit the processor up to a certain speed?
The processor will run at stated speed.
Any hardware that is faster or more powerful than the component being replaced will enhance performance.
Can you tell me when the upgrade will not help anymore since my G4 has a 100Mh
RAM is the only thing that will not be upgradeable, as far as speed. Larger capacity is no problem, and will help performance.
Of course, all upgrades are relative to the bus speed and throughput on the bus. As compared to a faster system, the performance won't be as high overall.
But, this is comparing apples to oranges......

  • G4 Dual 500Mhz - any limitation on Hard Drive size

iMac G3 only can see up to 128G, how about Power G4 Dual?
Does it need video adapter/connector to use regular IBM PC monitors?
    Thanks

    1. Your computer will see a maximum of 128GB on drives installed inside the machine.
    2. The answer to this question depends on which type of display port is on the computer and the monitor. See this article to identify a display port.

  • Mac mini Dual core vs. G4 500MHz Dual tower w/ non native applications

I have a Power Mac G4, Dual 500MHz. I wanted to upgrade to the G5 tower, but am getting concerned that I will be buying an obsolete computer as Apple migrates to Intel. I use Microsoft Office and Adobe's Creative Suite 2 (CS2) primarily on my G4 and am really tired of the slow performance. I was thinking of buying the new Mac mini dual core and add an additional 7200 RPM external Hard Drive to improve the drive performance until the new Intel towers come out. I know that the applications I use are not written for the Intel processor. Does anyone know how well these applications perform on the Intel mini vs. my old old G4?

In a year or so, there will probably still be more PPC Mac users than Intel ones, and I doubt that any smart company will end support for PPC Macs that early. Apple provided developers with a way to create Universal Binaires for two reasons : to avoid the confusion introduced by two versions (PPC & Intel) of the same app, and to force (i.e. strongly encourage) developers to support both platforms for quite some time.
There's no doubt that a PowerMac G5 will run Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), and probably the following version too. CS3 will be Universal, and will thus run at full speed on both PowerPC and Intel-based macs, and there's a chance that CS4 could be Universal too. If you buy a PowerMac now, it probably won't be outdated before three years or more.
While the Intel Core Duo is much faster than a G4 and quite a bit faster than a single G5, I think that a Dual G5 could be about as fast as they are (maybe a bit slower "per-gigahertz", but Core Duos don't reach 2.3/2.5 Ghz yet anyway) ...
Regarding the fact that Office runs well under Rosetta but not CS2, that's because CS2 is a much more demanding suite of applications, which probably features a lot of AltiVec code (software sepcifically optimized for the G4/G5's Velocity Engine - which wasn't originally supported by Rosetta and now is, but translating PPC code into Intel x86 isn't fast, so translating code that's supposed to run very close to the processor itself must cause an even grater performance loss). Even though Photoshop probably won't run slower than on your dual 500 Mhz, it probably won't run much faster, so if you don't want to get a PPC Mac, then I suggest that you keep your G4 for now and wait until Apple releases the next generation of PowerMacs.
On the other hand, one of the reasons why your G4 is slow with Photoshop could be because you don't have enough RAM. Most people who have used the latest version consider that 512 MB is a minimum, and 1 or 2 GB are recommended. If you only have 256 MB or so in your Mac, why don't you just add some memory and wait until the next PowerMacs ?

  • Upgrading AGP Graphics Processor; Dual vs. Single

So i just received a pair of old G4 towers. They're both AGP Graphics 400mhz machines, and i'm thinking of upgrading the processors on both. From what i understand from reading through the forums, they can take an OEM processor from some of the newer G4 towers. I've checked, and both machines have Uni-North numbers greater than 7 (one is 7, the other is 8), so they both can accept dual processors. Trying to weigh my options and decide what's best, taking into consideration that the bus on the AGP machine is only 100mhz compared to 133/167mhz bus on the faster processors...
    1. Single 1ghz/933mhz/867mhz processor (will run underclocked)
    2. Dual 500mhz processor (will run true @ 1ghz due to the 100mhz bus on the AGP machine)
    2. Dual 1ghz/800mhz Processor (will run underclocked)
Thoughts? This would no doubt be a cheap upgrade, there are plenty of processors on eBay for under $100, and that makes it worthwhile for me.
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Single 1ghz/933mhz/867mhz processor (will run underclocked)
This will also require a 12v power modification to use a QS processor in a sawtooth.
    2. Dual 500mhz processor (will run true @ 1ghz due to the 100mhz bus on the AGP machine)
This will run a true +500 MHz+, not 1 GHz. The dual processor just increases multi-thread processing ability. They do not double the clock speed.
But, this is a plug and play upgrade, and a nice improvement over a single 400 MHz processor.
    2. Dual 1ghz/800mhz Processor (will run underclocked)
Again, there are voltage differences in the machine's which must be overcome.
You can find information on the actual modifications needed Here.
If you are capable of doing the mod work, I think it would be a fun project, and provide a boost to the old machines.

    Hi-
    I would look for a minimum of a 867MHz Quicksilver or a 933 MHz Quicksilver 2002 model.
Both, besides being faster, have an L3 cache with the processor that the 733 machine doesn't.
This cache really helps with video/graphic/game performance.
The 2002 Quicksilvers (800, 933 and dual 1.0GHz) are more desirable than the first QS (733, 867, and dual 800) because they have native support for larger than 128GB hard drives.
The 800MHz QS 2002 doesn't have the L3 cache, just like the 733MHz processor.
Also, because the greater than 867MHz machines are able to run Leopard, they can use more modern software.
Other than that, and CPU, the machines are all identical.
As compared to the other machines that you have (G3 and G4) the 733 is a much better machine.
It could really use the L3 cache, though.
Only replacing the processor can provide that....
BTW, I have 3 933MHz QS 2002 machines, and find it to be a very capable machine.
My daughter uses one, and doesn't complain about online activities (video & games) like she did with a dual 500MHz Gigabit Ethernet.
Another one is used as a media server for our family entertainment center, and is also very capable with the tasks that it performs.

  • What's the deal with dual processors???

The whole dual processor thing has been bugging me for some time now. If I have a dual 500mhz processor, is it the same as a 1.0ghz processor, worse than one, better than one?! Are there other factors at play? In my limited scope, if you had a dual 500, 533, whatever, it would be the same as a single 1.0ghz - and yet these dual processors are priced much cheaper. I really am at a loss as to how computers do their processing, and how to compare single processor G4's and dual processor G4's when making a purchase.
    Insight would be greatly appreciated!

And you shouldn't forget, the future is multiprocessors. There is a limit to miniturization, and the solution seems to be multiplication. So operating systems and applications are increasingly going to be multiprocessor-aware. Maybe a perfect example is the upcoming MacOS release, Snowleopard. Apparently, there will be almost no cosmetic changes. The changes will essentially be 'under-the-hood'. And you can bet, that some of those changes will be increased efficiency with respect to multiple processors.
So what's the deal with airplane peanu...err, dual processors?
The advantage, theoretically is, having more workers to do the work. Your 1ghz processor is like a worker who can lift 100kg, and your 500mhz are like workers who can lift 50kg each.
So where's the advantage? If you have a farm with 40 kg hay bales in the field that you need to pick up, your better off with two workers than one right? Or 8 workers in the case of a 8-core MacPro. So an multiprocessor-aware operating system, doles out the work much more efficiently, spreading the tasks around, or spreading a single task around in pieces (if the app is so written).
You've heard of render farms? The multiple computers used to render the frames of animated movies? Its the same principle. Having computer 1 render the first 1000 frames and computer 2 the next, the project gets done within a lifetime. If they had had only one computer, ToyStory would still not be finished.
Its the future. Just wait till the end of this year for example. Nehalem chips will be sporting even more processors.

  • 2nd hard drive for Dual 500 MHz Sawtooth

I have a G4 dual 500 MHz sawtooth with a 40 GB hard drive and 1 GB of RAM. I don't have any PCI slots left and I was hoping to add a second drive. Is this possible? Does this model have the ribbon and power supply for a second drive? I've been searching the discussions, but haven't found any info on this.
Also, is an ATA-133 drive fast enough for this model or could I put something in that's faster?

    Hi, Al -
    I have a G4 dual 500 MHz sawtooth...
A dual 500MHz G4 is not a Sawtooth model; the Sawtooths are the G4 (AGP) models.
Your dual 500MHz G4 is a Gigabit Ethernet model.
Yes, it does come pre-equipped to accept a second internal drive - the mounting sled, data cable connector, and power cable connector for it are already present.
The built-in controller is an ATA/66 controller. This means it has a hardware limit of not being able to 'see' more than 128GB of drive size. If a drive larger than that is connected, only 128GB of it will be available. This is a drive size limit, not a volume limit; partitioning will make no difference.
The new drive should be an ATA (or PATA, Parallel ATA) drive, not a SATA (Serial ATA) drive. Although the bus speed is ATA/66, newer drives are often ATA/100 or ATA/133 - that's okay, such a drive should work fine though it will operate at ATA/66 speed. Since that is the case, there is no advantage in paying extra for speeds in excess of ATA/66 - unless the plan is to be able to use it at a later time on a newer machine with a faster bus.
Typically the original drive will have been jumpered as Master. Set the jumpers on the new drive to Slave. Which drive is which makes little difference; the designations of Master and Slave are addresses, and do not establish a priority or preference - either can be used as the primary boot drive.
If your original drive happens to be a Western Digital, it may be using a third jumper setting, Single - this is often used by WD drives when it is the only device on the bus. If this is the case, it will need to have its jumpers reset to Master (or Slave, as desired) when adding a second drive.
When there are two devices on the bus, and Master and Slave are used, there can be only one of each.
Do not use Cable Select on that model G4.
Another option would be to use a firewire drive. Your machine is firewire bootable. Such drives offer a lot in convenience, in the ability to move them from one machine to another quickly.
Some cost savings in having a firewire drive can be achieved by purchasing a firewire drive enclosure (rather than a complete drive), then installing a relatively inexpensive ATA drive.

  • Anyone Using iDVD 4.01 and 10.4.3 Without Crashing???????

    This problem is spanning three Macs: Mdd dual 1GHz (Pioneer109 1.5.8), Quicksilver 2002 Dual 1GHZ (Pioneer 109, A09 1.5.8), and dual 500MHz (Pioneer 107D A707).
It gets to Burning Stage 4 and Quits.
It never gets out of Stage 3 (it just stays there, sometimes it takes a Force Quit out of iDVD and FInder and/or power button forced shutdown).
ACTUALLY -- I've noticed a symptom of this behavior, the Activity Monitor maxes one processor for a minute or two while the other processor shows almost no activity, then it switches processors for the same then switches back (meaning it's flaked out).
I have saved projects as iDVD archives and ran them on the same box and on other boxes -- same problems.
When I actually get a burned disk, iDVD will Unexpecdly Quit at the end of burning stage.
I have submitted numerous reports to Apple off at least three 10.3.4 machines. I can work on 1GB layered files in Photoshop all day long, and I can render DV footage in six-hour runs with no ram/system/disk issues (on any of these machines).
I have used New User accounts and performed all system and disk maintenance.
I suspect there is a problem here????????????????????????????
I am preparing DV movies in Final Cut Pro 3.0.4 as FCP files, bringing them into iDVD like I have many time prior to 10.3.4.
These FIREDRILLS are extremely time consuming...

  • Upgrade machine to QuickSilver, which ones are compatible w/ current boards

    Greetings Apple Discussions:
The Sawtooth is freezing, especially with DVD burning and GarageBand or other heavy task. The machine first started freezing every once and a while when I added the video card and started running two monitors at one time. Now it freezes more often. I was wondering if this stock power supply needed upgrading, but most of my additional devices are externally powered. The two cards and two internal hardrive upgrade and additions are internal. Here is a list of the relevant info from the System Profiler. I edited some of it to be direct and simple.
I basically need to know which QuickSilver can except the video and PCI cards I have added.
I would appreciate if someone could help me with this issue.

    Greetings Rodney:
Thank you for your time and information.
Your saying 133MZ ram will work on 100MZ and 133MZ machines and but 100MZ ram will only work on 100MZ machines?
Is the 133MZ noticebly faster than the 100MZ machines? The Power Macintosh G4 "Digital Audio", tends to be a lower priced (used) machine, than the QuickSilver.
I forgot about the processor. Thanks for pointing that out. I contacted OWC and they gave me these compatible models for this particular processor:
    • Power Macintosh G4 "Sawtooth"
100MHz Bus, Available in G4/350MHz, G4/400MHz, G4/450MHz or G4/500MHz speeds
    • Power Macintosh G4 "Gigabit Ethernet"
100MHz Bus, Available in G4/400MHz, Dual G4/450MHz* or Dual G4/500MHz* speeds
    • Power Macintosh G4 "Digital Audio"
133MHz Bus, Available in G4/466MHz, G4/533MHz, G4/733MHz, or Dual G4/533MHz* speeds
    • Power Macintosh G4 "QuickSilver"
133MHz Bus, Available in G4/733MHz, G4/867MHz, or Dual G4/800MHz* speeds
    • Power Macintosh G4 "QuickSilver 2002"
133MHz Bus, Available in G4/733MHz(Education only), G4/800MHz, G4/933MHz, or Dual G4/1.0GHz* speeds

  • Liquid cooled G5 issue

I have a dual 2.5ghz G5 Power Mac which recently started to make a horrid noise which I think was coming from the pump for the liquid cooling system. There was a sort of liquid sloshing sound and a whine like you get when your car windscreen cleaning system has run out of fluid.
I checked for coolant leaks and found nothing. I took the machine in to an Apple Service Center and they have now told me that the CPUs need replacing at a cost of £700. I don't trust this diagnosis. The machine ran fine, albeit at a higher temperature than normal.
I'm not interested in paying half what I paid for the machine brand new just to replace CPUs, particularly for a machine that is discontinued.
Can anyone offer me some suggestions as to what I can do about the machine?

why does apple not have a uniform repair policy with these failed machines? Why do I need to speak with a manager and pursue all these avenues to deal with what seems to me a faulty piece of machinery that I have built system of peripherals around?
Manager at apple store has agreed to wave $100 diagnostic fee and to cover half cost of $710 repair bill. Not feeling great with the idea of paying $355+ in repairs for a computer that will probably start leaking once I put it back into high gear crunching data. . .
Others have had apple estimates of $1100 or even $2500 plus in overseas markets. . .
Could apple remove liquid cooling system, thereby eliminating future leaks/catastrophe's?
Plan on making calls to APPLE to see if repair can be cleared regardless of out of warranty status. Pains me to have bought liquid cooled computer knowing that Apple removed cooling system in future models. . .
Oh yeah found in the G5 online manual they say. . .
Liquid Cooling System, Some Power Mac G5 models use a liquid cooling system to manage the temperature in the computer. The liquid cooling system is sealed and is designed to be opened only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). · Warning: Do not attempt to open or service the liquid cooling system. Opening the liquid cooling system may damage your equipment, and such damage may not be covered by the limited warranty on your computer.
    · Warning: Always operate your computer in an upright position. In the unlikely event that coolant leaks in or from your computer, disconnect all electrical power to the computer and do not restart it. Contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple for information about servicing your computer. After disconnecting electrical power, you can clean up coolant using an absorbent cloth. Avoid inhaling or direct contact with skin. Coolant may cause minor skin irritation. If coolant contacts skin, wash well with soap and water. If coolant contacts eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Dispose of all clean-up materials in accordance with your local environmental laws, regulations, and guidelines. Coolant may be harmful if swallowed. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available at www.apple.com/environment/resources/msds.html.
•• alarming words I found are (some Power Mac G5 models), (unlikely event), (Avoid inhaling or direct contact with skin), (Dispose of all clean-up materials). . ahhhhh, why liquid cooled?

  • Possible G5 Leak appearing (pictures)

    Hello Everyone,
I hope this isn't the millionth 'ahh i think my powermac is leaking!!' thread but It's probably close!
I have a Dual 2.7 G5 (Week of 30/04/05 as stated in Hardware Monitor). After hearing extremely loud fan revs and experiencing random sleeps that the computer cannot be woken from (I assume this is the auto-shutdown feature that enters the sleep mode), I decided to install hardware monitor to monitor the CPU temperatures. At idle several minutes after a fresh reboot, CPU A and B sit at ~65 Celcius (150 Fahrenheit) and ~80 (175 Fahrenheit) respectively.
Under 100% load (ie. the work that I do), the processors A and B exceed 85 celcius (185 fahrenheit) and 105 celcius (220 fahrenheit). Since one of my processors is hot enought to boil water, I am understandably worried. Upon close inspection, I found a spot of white residue in drip patterns just under the PCI/CPU 'separation plate'. See Image (
*I didn't know the cooling pipes went there...?
**This drip pattern proceeds a few inches behind the grey plastic on the right of the picture but it's impossible to photograph with my current camera.
This does not go away after spraying with a compressed air can (ie. not dust!).
Also, after a while of using complete CPU power the machine will enter sleep mode abruptly. The temperatures of the CPU B are usually over 100 celcius when this occurs. When I try to turn it back on, it will either kernel panic, or just stay with idle fans (no video, no sound, nothing but the power light and idle fans).
Seeing white residue in the pattern of drips and extreme temperatures on the CPUs brings me to the conclusion that my liquid cooling is leaking...(duh)
Does anyone have any experience with this? Or does anyone know if I can find a list of serial numbers that are prone to leaks (I've heard a particular batch has had problems).
Thanks a lot, your help is really appreciated!!!
PS. How does Apple customer service treat leaks (if it is really a leak)?
PSS. Would using a laparoscopic camera to investigate void my warranty?
