1st and 2nd Generations

I have 2 different minis, one i think to be a 1st gen and the the other a 2nd gen. but if somebody could verify for me that would be great. The first one i have has a 2004 copyright and has a model number of A1051, it has an EMC No. of 1984, whatever that is. The second one that i have has a copyright of 2005 but is still the model number A1051 with its EMC No. being 2044. This one also has the 4GB stamp on the back unlike the 2004 one.
I am not sure if the one is even a 2nd gen. just because of the model number, but didnt they make the 2nd gen. in 2005? I am looking to sell one of them and would like to know which one it would be wiser to keep. Thanks!

The Mini w/o the capacity engraved is the 1st G. The Mini with the capacity engraved is 2nd G.

Try putting it into "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Then with it in this mode connect it to the PC and try to run the latest iPod updater to do a restore and update software if you have the option. the latest iPod updater is 2006-03-23 and can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

  • My iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation don´t show up anymore in iTunes after upgrade to iTunes 10.5 and MacOsX 10.6.8 Snow. What can I do??

I was using iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation together with iPod Shuffle 1st generation with inferior versions of iTunes and MacOS X without any problem. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6.8, the iPod Shuffle still appears in iTunes normally, but the iPods don´t appear. Its not a problem of the USB because because it happens with two different USB cables which worked just fine before. Any idea how I could get the iPods working again?? Thanks a lot!!!

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, MacOS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.5, and my iPod still works when I plug it in.
So it's not the software, because mine still works. Do your iPods have a lock on them? If so, try unlocking them and then plugging them in, usually when your iPod has a passcode lock it won't show up in iTunes until you unlock it.

  • What is the difference between 1st and 2nd generation of the Itouch?

Can someone tell me the difference between the 1st and 2nd generation of the itouch? I'm looking to upgrade from my nano to a 32gb Itouch.

The speaker is a big plus. Who wants to dig up their headphones just to play a quick game of Lux Touch or play with your light sabre without anyone else hearing the sound effects :)? The lack of a volume control is also a major complaint of IPT 1G users. The only thing that should swing you back to the 1G is the iPod accessories you already have that may be rendered obsolete.

  • HT202157 What is the difference between the 1st and 2nd generation Apple TV?

What is the main difference between the 1st and 2nd generation Apple TV's? I just got the 1st generation and was wondering if I should send back for the 2nd gen?

There is one other difference. The ATV3 uses a new processor with a better graphic processing unit.  If you only had the ATV2 for less than 14 day. Why not upgrade. 1080p video will be a little sharper, but in reality most people won't notice any real difference. It's likely that Apple will stop supporting the ATV 1st gen and 2nd gen in couple of years. Apple as a company usually only supports hardware 5-6yrs max!

    Hi Phil.Surf 16,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPod is not in iTunes. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Airport express identification and 1st and 2nd generation  connectivity

    Hi
I have three questions regarding airport express
    1. How do i know what model airport express i have? i'm not sure if i bought before or after 2008 if it operates with 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g/Draft N
    2. Second question is if I have the 802.11a/b/g/Draft N 1st generation can i connect it to a 2nd generation airport express to extent the range of my wifi?
    3. If yes, should i connect 2nd generation to router and then use 1st generation to extend the range? or vice versa
Thank you in advance for your help

How do i know what model airport express i have? i'm not sure if i bought before or after 2008 if it operates with 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g/Draft N
Get out those reading glasses or a magnifying glass and locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
A1084 or A1088 are older "b/g" versions of the AirPort Express.....not really compatible with much of anything anymore, since they do not have a setting or capability to "extend a wireless network".
A1264 is the 1st Gen 802.11n version.....which will work with the new Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks operating systems.
Second question is if I have the 802.11a/b/g/Draft N 1st generation can i connect it to a 2nd generation airport express to extent the range of my wifi?
Yes, but since the 1st Gen Express is not dual band, it will only be able to extend one band from the newer 2nd Gen Express.....probably the 2.4 GHz band since that is the stronger signal. If you want or need to extend dual bands, then you will need two 2nd Gen Express devices.
If yes, should i connect 2nd generation to router and then use 1st generation to extend the range? or vice versa
2nd Gen would be connected to the router and the 1st Gen would extend.
That way, you will at least get dual bands from the 2nd Gen.  If you reverse the process.....remember that the 1st Gen is single band....the 2nd Gen will only extend one band....and you will lose some of the performance capability of the device.

  • IPod touch 1st and 2nd generation logic

Why would Apple leave the first and second generation ipods? i mean sure there old but if you actually think about it be cause we can't recieve any more updates we aren't able to by apps we want and then that won't make Apple money, and i know they want to make money so they should use logic and see how much better this can be if they try this.

The logic is the same with any electronic device like iPhones, iPads, iPods, smart phones, Tablets and computers. The time they are made, they are the best, but this thing off technology is advancing to fast.
So, in order for you to be able to have all the apps you want this days we need to have a device that can handle them, like a computer e.g: you need to keep upgrading or by new ones.
Same thing with Apple, since is not possible to upgrade the device we have, we need to get new ones.
I do understand where you´re coming from but that how things are.
Apple think different for people that think different.

  • Using both 1st and 2nd Generation Shuffle on the same computer

After owning a 1st Gen Shuffle for a number of years, today I decided to upgrade to a 2nd Gen.
What I would like to know is, can I use both shuffles on the same computer, through the same iTunes program, using the same music library?
There's nothing wrong with the 1st Gen unit, but I still want to use it as a back-up/secondary unit to the 2nd Gen one.
I have yet to connect the 2nd Gen unit to my computer. Before I do I would like to know whether or not I can use both the old and the new units. Also is there anything special I need to do to allow this to happen.
    thank you.

Nothing special to do. Connect new iPod and let it sync. Make sure only one is connected at a time.

  • Is there any different in home button between 1st and 2nd generation Touch?

My 1st gen. Touch's home button is working, but the feeling of press it is not like press a button. The feeling is completely different from the 2nd gen. Touch that I played in store today. Is my Touch normal or defect?

First, don't hang onto the hope that next year's MBP won't have an optical drive; instead, you'd be advised to purchase a 2011 MacBook Air, which doesn't have an optical drive but relies on SDD. If you need a CD/DVD drive, you can get that separately, if you need. The latest Air has received better reviews than anything else in the Apple lineup.
I'm not an expert on the different brand of keys available. But you'll want to make sure the color is an exactly match to the model. Replacing thes keys is relatively inexpensive but tedious, you might do well to email sellers to guarantee the color and fit.
    Good luck with the repair!

  • How can i tell the difference between a 1st and 2nd generation Nano?

greetings. just purchased a Nano on eBay. the model # is MA107LL/A, 4GB. is this a first or second generation Nano? i also bought one with the model # MA426LL/A. is this a first or second generation Nano? thanks so much.

A first generation Nano will be either black or white and is plastic on the front and metal on the back. A second generation Nano comes in a variety of colours and the body is made entirely from aluminium: Identifying different iPod models

  • 1st vs 2nd generation Nano

For people who've held both 1st and 2nd generations Nano's, how does the style compare? The round edges vs the more square edges? Pictures just don't do them justice, so would like to hear your opinions from 1st hand experience.
    Thanks

Personally, I LOVE the changes made in the 2nd Gen Nano. Not crazy about the candy colors - I wish that they had gone with colors that were a little more sophisticated and subtle - And I wish that the 8GB had come in at least Silver as well as black.
Still, I got the black 8GB Nano to replace my 1st Gen 4GB Nano - And I couldn't be much happier. The feel of that midnight aluminum is much more pleasing than the chrome and plastic of the 1st Gen...the rounded edges make it feel much better in the hand.
Even though it is thinner and lighter than the 1st Gen, it still feels more solid and less fragile. With my first Nano, I felt like I HAD to use a case in order to protect it. I ended up using a CoreCase in a silver aluminum (http://www.corecases.com/home.php). It was the least bulky hard case I could find that fit in with the Apple style. But it still added bulk to the Nano.
With my new Nano, I do not feel the need to cover it up as much, thus keeping the "WOW" factor of something so small being able to deliver that much power. Plus, the aluminum is less prone to scratches and fingerprints - a very nice feature!
I also prefer the click wheel with the middle Select button that is slightly concave instead of rounded - It just feels better and more natural.
I know others have viewed this change as a step backwards - back to the days of the iPod Mini. But I've always felt that the Mini was one of the best iPod designs out there - and this new Nano is even better! NOW, if only they could come up with BETTER colors, these Nanos would be nigh on perfect!

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
It sounds like the next best step to take would be to reset the iPod Shuffle.

  • Do I have a 1st or 2nd Generation Nano?

help - can anyone tell me how i know if my new nano 2gb black with a silver back is 1st or 2nd generation? I bought it direct from apple as reconditioned a couple of weeks ago

You have a First Generation Nano.
The Second Generation nano's color covers the entire unit, front and back (whatever that color may be).
For the first generation nanos, there is a silver backing, while the main color is on the front of the iPod.
Also, a second way of telling is that you can only get black Nanos in 8 GB size, now. Whereas, the first generation black nanos used to (you can get them refurbished now, of course) come in 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GB.
That's not the case now with the current Nanos, so there's your second reason why you have a First Generation.
