1st ever kernal panic killed mac ?!?

got a 5 year old imac - always ran sweet as a nut. started slowing 3 years ago but ram boost sorted that.
month or two ago, had a suspected hard drive issue, but a safe mode boot cleared the problem and haven't had any issues since until last weekend.
had a few things open but was browsing with firefox, firefox froze, go spinny thing, went to get a cup of tea and when i returned had the "you need to restart etcetc". Cannot get past this no matter how many times i've tried rebooting, pressing different keys, swtiching ram etc.
Does anyone have any ideas?

i would give _*Apple Hardware Test*_ a go.

  • Kernal Panics in Mac Pro  - OS X 10.6.4

hey guys (feel free to place this in the Mac Pro discussion, if you feel it belongs there, though I think it's more an OS problem).
My system: 8-core 2.26Ghz Mac Pro, running OS X 10.6.4, 640gb HD (system disc), 2TB HD (documents), 6gb ram
The problem: I'm getting kernel panics. Dimmed screen with the "You need to restart your computer. hold down the power button until it turns off. then press the power button again." message
The details: I bought my Mac Pro (second-hand) last Friday. It came with a clean install of 10.6 (but no installer disc, as it was part of a design studio, and I think they had one disc, with many licenses - I am going to buy a 10.6 installer disc when I can afford to). I updated the OS to 10.6.4 on Sunday and that's when I got my first panic (there have been three now, in 24 hours).
First one occurred just after I had quit Firefox (I'm pretty sure it was the last application open - I was about to shut down).
The second one occurred as I was shutting down. I had pressed the Shutdown key command appleoption+controleject. Again, only Finder was running.
The third time, as I was shutting down. Hadn't entered the key-command yet, but Finder was the only program running.
I'd really like to get this sorted without wiping my HD and installing OS X 10.6 again. Has taken me days to get everything migrated across properly from my old Macbook.
I remember years ago (2005-ish, was on a G5 iMac), I was getting kernel panics. I can't remember what caused them, but I know I found a solution without re-installing the OS (cause I've never re-installed the OS, in my 10+ years on Macs).
Has anyone got experience in kernel panics? Or what I should try?
    Cheers,
    Sam

  • Kernal panic yosemite mac pro

i noticed that the system diag reports didn't seem to match the crash.  looked at them in detail over several days.
i then went after every kext that loaded at boot that i could not identify as having anything to do with current install.
no changes but then i deleted the final one by uninstalling norton av. note uninstall not just delete a boot kext.  much cleaner
    results.
i have gone a week now without a random crash or a system freeze or frozen windows. and as a bonus i can now view cnn news videos on their site in safari.
i intentionally loaded up 8 highly active tabs in safari as a test and didn't crash.  normal was four and crash.  other problems also
    cleared up.
this was not a clean install but install on top of old system when upgraded.
still have my wonky mouse after sleep though.  minor
    jimt

What you want to do is get out your Install Disk #1, hold down "d" on startup and run the Apple Hardware Test, extended mode, command + l to let it loop.
Take a look in System Profile >> Memory and do you see ECC errors or parity errors? how about the panic.log or system.log where you could also see errors.
    Call AppleCare.
I found AHT to be better now than in the past when you really had to rely on Memtest to pick up errors that AHT wouldn't.
There are times when you need to erase your drive (zero all even) and start with just Apple software and updates.
RAM errors can and do result in data and filesystem or directory errors and start creating more problems as you go along.
At the first sign of trouble or hard freeze, rather than trust the system to catch and repair errors, I usually run fsck from Single User Mode (command s on startup). If there is a k/p or freeze while writing to the journaling file, it is impossible to easily fix problems without an erase of the drive.

  • Kernal Panic. Mac Unresponsive...Mac Works

So my computer wouldnt start up, and it said restart your computer.
    It wont go away.
I called apple, something wrong with the hardware, after only two months.
Ehhh, and I cant recover my files.
I need a program to get my mac files back!!!
    ehhh.
Or whats going on? Has anyone gotten this error?

You may be able to get to you files thru Target Disc Mode, but you'll need another Mac to try this.
It all depends on whether your HD is fine ...I would assume that since you can boot to Windows then it prob. is OK and it's only a hardware issue.

  • Continuing Kernal Panic, Mac Store Clueless

I brought my 1.25 Dual G4 (MMD) to the local Mac Store because it had started having repeating Kernal Panics. The machine would run for 1-2 hours and then Kernal Panic. At times, the machine would even Kernal Panic at start up. I even tried starting off the 10.3.9 disk and it Kernal Panic'ed. In short order, I had no access to my machine, or even any way to save my info off my drives.
I am the guy that other people bring thier Mac to when it's broken. I have every program/tool needed to work on a mac. So if I couldn't find the issue, I surmized no one else could, and I may have been right.
I brought my G4 to the Mac Store. They were able to repeat the Kernal Panic, and were unable to get my machine up, even trying to fire it up off of an external HD. The Mac store changed my CPU ( $600.00+ due to my applecare expiring). That didn't do it. I took it home and it did start up, so I backed up onto a Firewire drive - BUT, one hour after backing up - KERNAL PANIC!
Mac Store Trip #2, they replaced my mother board (Logic board for mac users) and my processor again (free). 1 hour later KERNAL PANIC!!
Mac Store Trip #3 - they claim the figured out that a 3rd party HD I installed was causing the Kernal Panic. I took out the hardrive, bought a brand new one, reinstalled everything, 1 hour after I finished installing 10.4.7 BOOM KERNAL PANIC!
The apple store was clueless the whole time, and did about $2000.00 worth of repairs and labor for about 6 days costing me $600.00 and gas money. I really don't care, as long as my box works.
I have found that my fan doesn't seem to "speed up" anymore as it once did, and the inside of the box seems unusally hot. I just intalled 2 extra fans, and 2 hours later KERNAL PANIC.
I know the issue is not the HD. I know the issue isn't the video/3D card (I have 2 cards, and swaping them, both occur).
I have a 2096 SCSI card from adaptec with the driver installed that I have used for 3 years...dunno if it can be that.
I have a Aurora Fuse Igniter video card, with currently no driver installed. I'm gonna take that out, but that has been in the machine for 3 years as well, with no issues.
I can guess that MAYBE one of my ram chips has gone bad. I will try taking out all but the original ram and running the machine.
Any other ideas? Anytime the processor has to work hard for about an hour, the machine Kernal Panics. I have to admit, at least now it starts up - whereas before it wasn't even doing that - so the Mac Store did do something. Now the symtoms have just changed.
I am considering installing a 3rd fan that is attached to the HD case and pointed on a slight angle into the giant heat sink of the processor. The heat sink is right next to the HD, and seems to get unusally hot.
    I have Geforc4MX card currently installed, and I own a 9800Radion Pro.
This box was my workhorse. I have owned about 9 macs, and I have never had real issues like this. Ususally my HD's would just die. I cannot figure out what the heck is wrong with it, despite 10 years of fixing my macs, friends macs, and family's macs.
The Kernal panic messages weren't even being saved, thats how bad the panic was. The few times I saw it, it said "CPU 01" but since the CPU has been changed twice now, I assume its not that.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

This may or may not help. I have experienced kernel panics periodically, daily, since I bought my 1.42 dual. I usually know how to fix things, but i am not certified. I understand heat, so I run a large fan- a real ordinary box fan- right next to my computer blowing past it. This does not strain the internal power supply further. i have the box maxed, two optical drives, 128 radeon 9800 card, 4 drives, no pci fans internally, unless you count the onboard video card fan. I don't leave my firewire drives attached- just on and off for transfers- and I was determined this week to get the problem (of 2 years plus, now), solved. I have been kernel panic free for slightly over a day, so I don't know if this is appropriate yet, but it seems that my original 1 GB of ram from the apple build was the problem. I did notice that those sticks were much hotter than my additional ramjet sticks this last week when I went to unseat and reseat them, so I just took them out as a test. I think formerly I just removed my additional ram as a test. I am looking around at the sticks to try and figure out if one duo was ecc and one was not.... but as I understand it, all that would do would be to remove the ecc function on the duo that was ecc... I do not remember buying non-ecc ram. If my machine continues to be stable, I intend to just buy a little more ram identical to the sticks that are working now. I've lost work and had continual challenges because of this problem, and it does not seem to be because of the ram I added, at all, but the ram from apple that I started off with. I have had this problem since the day i turned on the machine, I have read about so many other people suffering with it, and heat and firewire disks and power supply were the culprits always suggested to me. Does anyone have a site to suggest that helps one identify ram sticks with an image? Has anyone ever seen information from Apple that admits to this problem in these machines? They weren't continued that long with the move to the G5.

  • Macbook Kernal Panics ever since I got it

I bought a Macbook, White 2GHz Intel Core Duo, last September and ever since I bought it have been having Kernal Panics. I tried to work out a pattern for the panics but they happen all the time for no particular reason. I've done a reinstall of Mac OS X, I have repaired permissions and done a search for disk problems. The only thing that I think it can be is a problem with the RAM slots or something like that. I bought it in America and am now in Japan but too far away from an Apple store. Any ideas on what to do would be great.
    Thanks,
    Cronosan
Macbook Intel Core Duo White   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

When I first got my PowerMac I had very much the same issue, but I quickly figured out what was going on: no matter what load I gave the computer, It remained completely silent, the fans always at a minimum. I found out that the Fan Control Unit was NOT working properly, and as you put the CPUs to work, their temperature would go up and up and up until some 70 degess celsius and then... Kernel Panic! My unit had to be completely replaced. Does your computer fans work? Anyway, it really sounds like you need a replacement.

  • Kernel Panicing Killed My New Mac Pro

    Hi,
Okay so I had a good solid reliable iMac G5 computer for almost three years and decided to upgrade to a Mac Pro because I edit using Final Cut Studio and wanted something with more power behind it. Everything started smoothly enough when i first plugged it in. Then I started getting the dreaded grey shield coming down over the screen and a message saying I had to restart, (basically crashing and losing any information I hadn't saved previously). The panic.log would sometimes list a kernal panic but occasionally say just something like....
    Maaaaaccccchine ckkkkaaaeck capaaaaabilitiiiiiiiiies
....all misspelt. I carried on using the machine and it would kernel panic more and more so called Apple Tec and went through EVERYTHING to try to get it working again. This included the Hardwear test, resetting, reloading the Operating System...I mean everything! Memory RAM was taken out swapped around, different hard drives used for the main drive.
Eventually sent to an Apple Service centre, who thought it was one of the drives, replaced it, sent back...turned on and guess what?! Kernel Panic again!!! So sent back, they checked everything, the Bluetooth adaptor, Airport card, memory, drives, even the logic boards....still panicing. So finally after 3 WEEKS of this back and forth the Mac was sent back to Apple and a completely new one is hopefully not far away. This will have basically taken a month out of my work, and I've lost several high paid jobs from it....A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE! So if you start having Kernel Panics, and you get that strange message, just beware. You may be in for trouble.
My question is, has anyone else had this problem ?

I think I read about problems with 8-core model lately, which in some cases, can have a later OS build than even 10.4.10 and I would not be surprised to see a 10.4.11 even.
When the Mac Pro came out there were 3 different builds until we all got to update to a common 10.4.8 which really helped and improved performance. And some SMC and EFI updates thrown in, and one for Nvidia.
Could be somewhat similar for the 8-core is my thought.
As for power requirements, the PSU may be 'asking' for more than needed on wake from sleep, and of course the 4-core * 2 Xeon is 'efficient' but still asks for more than 200W. Add in 10W for each DIMM, some more for each drive, 75-130W for Radeon. Then throw in disk drives, modem/router and a couple displays!
Enough so that finding a reliable UPS was as hard as finding one for a Quad G5. Not easy for some, but 1000VA or above. (I have no idea what type of current UK is on either).
I run with all the fans kicked up to 800 rpm (default is 499-599) which keeps things ventilated and brings DI(MM temp down 10ºC.
I would be worried about the LaCie.
Early on a few people had a USB problem on the back port of their keyboard. (The other left side was okay). So it seems even USB cables sometimes don't work.
Firewire drives and devices have been a problem; or it was the FW ports, either front or back, or running slower than they should. Consumer electronics on Firewire can be troublesome. Maybe one reason why Apple moved to USB2 on iPods, though might have been more about market and cost and more systems have USB.
Because it happens at home and not Apple Store is why I would focus on the wiring and current, and find a circuit just for the Mac Pro for now. Maybe get something to test outlet, ground, and a Kill-A-Watt or something.

  • Mac Mini crashes - NOT A KERNAL PANIC - just reboots

I posted this same info a couple days ago, but nobody responded, yet I see others getting their crashes responded to.
I have a Mac Mini Core Duo and have added 2 Gig of Omni Tech. memory recently. Everything pretty much works okay, except that playing Big Bang Board Games Reversi makes the mac reboot at random times. It is NOT a kernal panic. It simply powers itself off and back on, rebooting. I don't get the screen where you get told (in multiple languages) to reboot. It simply goes "BOOF!" and it powers off and on.
These reboots happen only in a few strange situations, but not in regular applications like Safari, Thunderbird, or even GarageBand. I can surf all day in Safari, literally, for over 12 hours. Then I go to Reversi and two plays later, "BOOF!".
All memory tests show my memory is okay, which includes:
    Memtest from Memtest.org,
TechTools CD from the AppleCare package, and
Apple Hardward Test that comes on the original Disc #1 DVD with the mini.
All of them show no errors with the memory, nor with any other hardware.
    Any suggestions?

Mac Mini Intel Duo Core   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi MrDuck,
It sounds like you may well need to reset the 'System Managament Controller'. There is a fairly straight forward guide on how to perform this procedure written here - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446 . It's absolutely nothing to worry about, the likeliness is that your system needs to be 'refreshed' to work with your new hardware if you like. It should do the trick.
Hope that I may have been of help

  • Mac Pro kernal panics

I have a Mac Pro (2.66 Quad Core) with 4 x 2GB here that is intermittently kernal panicing.
The kernal panics occur within around 8-12 hours with no applications running, however running the CPU at max. I haven't tested for an extended amount of time without the CPU running high as of yet.
OS has been freshly installed and all updates performed.
I was mostly wondering whether anything can be determined from the kernal panic logs:

From the kernel panic type, and the log, it appears to be RAM related.
Try pulling the RAM from the #1 and/or #3 slot of Riser A

  • Mac mini (07) Kernal panics

    Hello...
My sister was using the mac mini and then it showed up with a kernal panic screen.
I held the power button down and shut it off, but when I rebooted it started beeping.
it only beeped 3 times and blinked the light.
of course I shut down the mac mini.
unplugged everything waited a minute powered it back on and then it started beeping again.
I waited 2 hours later and it got to a weird desktop
it was the default BG with a transparent finder bar.
a window popped up telling me that Mac OS X crashed.
yet again after the window it beach balled and then another kernal panic.
the thing is I video taped it turning on and beeping at startup.
but my apple care has run out (I believe it has been past a year already)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might be able to hook it up to another Mac and print from there. Use Target Disk Mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
It doesn't need any RAM from the Mini.
If you don't have another Mac, take it to an authorized reseller or an Apple retail store and ask them to put it on a flash drive so you can print it from another machine. Sometimes Mac usergroups may have people who can help you to.

Are you getting the KP on startup, after its booted?
If you startup in Safe Mode (depress Shift key during startup), does it KP?
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Why do I keep getting Kernal Panic warnings to restart my new iMac that is running Lion?  This is happening as often as 2 times a week.  Never happened with any of my other Apples or Macs and I have been using them since the 1980s.
