1st Gen 10 Gig iPod won't play my Audible downloads

HELP!
Just updated my iTunes to v5. I have a huge collection of Audible books, etc. I purchased over the last 4 years. I keep these in a different Folder-Library so I can add without having them all put on the iPod every time I turn on iTunes to update my 1st Gen. iPod (10gig).
Purchased a new book Thursday night from Audible. Noticed iPod was totally discharged (still original battery) when I plugged in the FireWire. So I charged it overnight. Tried to update next am & noticed Desktop G4 did not recognize the iPod. So I completely reset the iPod. Still wouldn't recognize the iPod. Plugged in, I tried the iPod Updater-(up to v1.5). Finally got iTunes 5 to see my iPod. Then I cleaned up my iTunes Library-all duplicate songs, multiple Podcasts and Audible downloads were trashed.
Thus, a clean music library of approximately 5 Gigs. I then successfully re loaded the iPod using a new FireWire cable.
The download from Audible was an unabridged book on File Format 3 of Audible- aprox 98 megs in 2 files.) Book was transferred to iTunes where I Playlisted it from main Library of iTunes into Audible Play list. Again, I updated the iPod.
Now the main Problem. The iPod. I can see the Book and click it all the way to play- where it freezes and merely shows the static title- no scrolling,,etc. Sometimes I can cleanly back out and play another music selection on the iPod. Sometimes I have to soft reset it while plugged in to get out of the selection
So I trashed the new .aa file and tried some of the old ones. Same thing. My ancient iPod sees them but absolutely will not play any of them. And iTunes is still acting geeky about mounting my Pod in the application. (I have it turned off as a disk image/ whatever- in iTunes preferences.) And sometimes having just recognized the iPod, with it still mounted in iTunes, if I click iPod Prefs in iTunes, Preferences will say there is no iPod attached. I've turned off all music sharing in Prefs too. (Not that there are any other computers networked and only one other User in the Desktop machine.)
I absolutely can not access any Audible content (.aa) on the iPod though it all plays fine in iTunes.
Although I'm smitten with the newest Gen. iPods I really hate to give up on my Original. Any suggestions/help will be deeply appreciated. Thanking y'all in advance, I am,
John Patton IV

Hi John,
Here is what I suggest you do. Clear the iPod of everything, including music and Audible content. The iPod should now be empty. In iTunes, click on Advanced, and choose Deauthorize computer. Make sure to choose Audible, and proceed to deauthorize your Audible account. Once you have done this, go into the iTunes library, select an Audible book, and try to play it. You should be asked to put in your Audible username and password. Please go ahead and do so. The file should start playing in iTunes.
Now here is the important part. Go ahead and transfer that book over to your iPod. Make sure that book is the ONLY item on your iPod, including music. If it is, go ahead and try to play the Audible file. Chances are, it should be playing. If it is, you can feel free to transfer the rest of the content back to your iPod, as the problem is fixed.
Please let me know if that helps or not, as Audible is always looking for feedback. Thanks!

  • 1st Gen Apple TV won't play iTunes purchased movie

I purchased a movie (not HD) on iTunes and cannot play it on my 1st gen Apple TV.  My older movies are still there to be viewed.  Any thoughts?

Does it appear in the movie list on the AppleTV1 but won't play?  Does it give an error?
Try purchasing something on AppleTV1 direct - check in iTunes you may find a free episode of a TV Show or similar.  I had an issue last year with new content until I purchased something else on AppleTV - i assumed it was some kind of authorisation getting updated.

  • 6th gen 120gb ipod won't play

My 6th generation 120gb ipod classic acts like it's working - shows songs & podcasts w/the arrow for play & double lines for pause at the top of the screen, but won't actually proceed forward and play. It has been working perfectly and just started doing this for no reason. Will resetting it to factory settings correct the problem? Any other suggestions? Anyone else have this problem? Thx

    Hi agramante9a,
The steps outlined below can help restore functionality to your iPod Nano's display.
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.

  • My 5th gen. IPOD won't disconnect after I download pictures to it?

I've been able to download pictures to my IPOD. However, the last time I did it I was unable to disconnect my IPOD. I kept getting the Do Not Disconnect on my IPOD, but ITUNES said it was done updating. When I tried to manually eject my IPOD I got a "note" on my screen saying IPOD can not be ejected because files that are on the IPOD are being used in another application. I checked and I didn't have any other applications going. I shut down my computer and was finally able to disconnect my IPOD, but now everytime I connect my IPOD I keep getting the Do Not Disconnect. I don't want to have to shut my computer completly down everytime I update my IPOD. It was working just fine before, so I'm not sure what is going on....

Also, do you have McAfee Virus Scan on your computer? That tends to be the cause of this issue. Try disabling it before you connect your iPod. When you are finished, reenable it.

  • Repaired screen and now iPod won't play

I replaced the broken LCD screen in my son's 1st gen black nano. It looks beautiful! There is a problem with the ipod now though. The iPod won't play. Everything works perfectly...screen is bright and beautiful, click wheel works to move through all menus, change volume, etc. You can choose a song, but the song won't play. The little triangle that stands for play is in the top left corner like it wants to play, but the status bar that tells you how long the song is doesn't move at all. You can fast forward through the song manually, but it won't play.
I have reset the ipod by toggling the hold button and pressing the select and menu choices from the click wheel. I have done the 5 R's that Apple suggests. I have even restored it to original facotry settings. iTunes can see it and re-downloaded all of the music onto it. All of the software on the computer is updated and the ipod software has been updated. Everything works fine except it won't play!
When I had the iPod open and was working on it, there were 2 ribbon cables that needed to be connected, 1 was the click wheel cable and 1 was the LCD screen cable. I have attached those securely and both are working properly except for the matter that it won't play songs. There was 1 other flat copper cable that seems to be glued to the click wheel that I didn't see in any of the pictures in the repair manual. It's not a ribbon cable. One end is still glued to the click wheel, but the other end is loose. This is probably the problem. I don't remember disconnecting this during the repair, although I know it had to be connected somewhere. I reaches up close to where the earphone jack is. Does anyone have any idea where this flat copper cable is supposed to be connected? I would appreciate any help you can give me! Thanks!

Here is the URL for the picture of the copper cable. The dark part at the end of the copper cable is a piece of silver metal mesh that is glued on one side of the copper cable. You can see that it is glued at the other end to the back of the click wheel underneath where the battery was glued down. I vaguely remember that it was connected to something else, but I don't remember disconnecting it because I was so intent on getting the ribbon cables disconnected without damaging them.

  • Ipod Nano won't play any songs downloaded from MySpace pages...

My first generation Nano was initially sent back to Apple due to the battery losing it's charge to quickly. They sent me back what appears to be a replacement Nano and now this one won't play any songs downloaded from MySpace pages of bands, shared from friends (unprotected mp3 files) or otherwise downloaded from the internet.
Whats unusual is that any songs imported from a CD to the Nano play fine as do any songs purchased from iTunes. I know Apple has stated that any files the user wishes to play on their iPods will play as long as the format is compatible. (All of these songs in question played on the original Nano and the problems started when they said they fixed it and sent it back (although it is missing the engraving which to me indicates they gave me a refurbished Nano). My Applecare runs out in mid-October so I need to figure out what is wrong. I sent it back a second time and they told me they couldn't recreate the problem so they just updated the software and sent it back.
Someone suggested that some iPods have a part of the firmware activated (which Apple may have been testing) that prevents any non-ITunes store music or music no t off an original CD to fail to play.
When attempting to play downloaded songs from sites like Purevolume and MySpace the iPod plays for a few seconds then shuts down and restarts itself, all of these songs worked fine before Apple took it in for service.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. It`s so annoying.
I did a little bit research on this discussion board and this problem seems to be known for quite a long time. It`s confusing me Apple is not able to fix that prob or give customers quick introduction to resolve the prob.
I am currently on vacation in Florida and just bought the new iPod 30 Gig. I transfered already songs from my music cd. That worked fine.
I bought 2 music video files, synced them with no error to the iPod, but it only shows me a black screen when I want to start the video on the iPod itself. itunes plays the files with no problem.
Any ideas how to fix it??

  • IPod Won't Play Songs, Videos Reset it, and it's Quite Sluggish

I have a 30GB video iPod (the old version). Everything was working fine until a few days ago, when the power on my iPod ran out because I fell asleep while listening to it. The next day when I turned it on, it said "Connect to your Computer, Use iTunes to restore" So I promptly did that, and it worked fine until I tried to play a video on it. It showed a blank screen, so I reset it by pressing the Menu and Center buttons. Then it showed the "Connect to your computer" screen again. So I restored it, and it would be fine until it locked up again and showed the "Connect to your computer screen" again. I left it alone for about eight hours, and when I tried turning it back on again, it was back to normal.I've seen that screen probably 10 times in the past 4 days, and I've restored it, just as many times.
Here's the list of problems I'm having:
    - the iPod won't play some songs when I click on them. It will show the Playing triangle in the upper left corner, but I hear no sound and the seeking bar doesn't move. I'll often have to click the Pause button, then hit it again to Play it, and then it will play the song.
    - The iPod is extremely slow. When dealing with songs or videos, it often takes a minute or more for the iPod to respond to my button clicks. Its hard drive isn't full, though; in fact I'm only using about 2 GB.
    - Videos lock up the iPod. Just about any time I want to play I video on it, it will show a blank screen and won't respond. Then I have to reset it and I get the "Connect to your computer" screen again. These aren't videos in the wrong format or anything, these are the same videos I've been playing on my iPod before with no problems, until recently.
    - Battery life is horrible. Although it hasn't been fully drained yet, judging from the power meter and how long I've been using it after it's fully charged, I'd guess it would only last about 2-3 hours. I would think it should last considerably longer, as the iPod is only about 3 months old.
Has anybody been experiencing similar problems, or know what I can do to fix it?

I've still had the same problems, but now when I try and turn on my ipod, it tells me to restore. When I do go to restore, itunes says that it cannot find the file needed to restore my ipod. The ipod itself also tried resetting itself, I guess, made it to the menu that asked what language I wanted it in, and then restarted again. This went on for an hour and a half, and I could't do anything. Is my ipod a lost cause?

  • 1st Gen. Ipod Touch does not see my wifi

Hello all, I have been struggling with this issue for a couple of hours and I am stuck. Any insight would be appreciated.
My 1st gen. Ipod touch no longer sees my wireless network. This is preventing me from connecting, obviously. The Ipod sees other wireless networks, such as my neighbors, but not mine. Other devices, such as my laptop and my printer both see and connect to the wireless network fine. I am at a loss for what to do next.
    What I have tried:
    Power cycling my Ipod.
Resetting network settings on my Ipod.
Resetting all settings on the Ipod.
    Power cycling my wireless router.
    Additional information:
I am running the latest Ipod and router firmware, so far as I can tell.
I recently bought a new router, which may be the source of the trouble. It is a standard Belkin 108.11b/g router. I haven't done anything fancy with the settings, other than to change the defauly SSID and set up wireless security.
My wireless router is set to broadcast an SSID.
My wireless router is set to use WPA/WPA2 encryption (though I don't think that should affect its visibility).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

... I know battery life isn't the issue because I had it syncing with my laptop for a few hours.
But if this is your old iPod, perhaps it is the battery. It may no longer be able to hold charge, that's what happens to old batteries.
Have you tried turning it on while it's connected to power? When you unplug the iPod from any power and try turning it on, look at the battery icon (if it's there). Is it full when it turns on and what level does it show just before it turns itself off again?

My Apple TV 1st gen will now no longer play any of our iTunes music, although it shows a speaker symbol when you select play on the track. Please help?

Are you streaming or syncing you music? Sounds like you're streaming music directly from iTunes.
There can be many different issues. First, try power-cycling you wireless router (leave router disconnected for about 1 or 2 minutes) to refresh the wireless communication betweek both devices.
Make sure all software updates have been installed, for Apple TV and iTunes.

  • IPod won't play purchased music from iTunes Store

My iPod won't play purchased songs from the iTunes Store. They play on my computer, using iTunes, through the iPod, but my iPod won't play the songs with headphones, or in my BOSE speaker station, nor in my car using my Belker radio adapter. I've purchased a few songs before, and haven't had this problem. I wasn't prompted, as I have been before, to enter in a password before playing the songs.

i have the same problem, and i looks like there are another 4 or 5 discussion threads with the same prob. my ipod is about 14months old, got one of the first 4th generations when they came out -- have never had a problem, then when i downloaded itunes 6, all of a sudden everything i have purchased since then plays fine on my computer and just keeps scrolling thru and not playing on my ipod. very very frustrating. i have tried everything, right down to a complete restore on it, and nothing helps. also, when i downloaded itunes6, my purchased music playlist disapeared -- i spent 2 weeks and 5 emails going back and forth with tech support because they wouldn't address the issue, and am wary of going to them with this one. i thought the drive or memory on the ipod was corrupted and was going to buy another one, but now i'm not so sure -- is anyone having this issue with a 5th generation? because what it looks like is itunes 6 downloads may not be compatible with 4th G, and that makes me a little cranky. any one find a solution for this yet?

  • My ipod won't play any music

My ipod won't play music. I tried playing music with and without headphones and when my ipod is in the dock, but it said music was playing except there was no sound. Can anyone help?

Do the headphones work in another device?
Does the iPod play any sound?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset . Nothing is lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • 1st generation ipod won't play music

I have a first generation iPod that I have never really used before, but would like to use now.
I downloaded iTunes 11 to see if it will work.  iTunes recognizes the device and allows me to set certain options.
It also has several times said that it has synced with it.
But nothing will play on the iPod, i.e. no sound will come out.
Also, there does not seem to be anyway to show what songs are on the iPod, only what is in the iTunes library.
I have restored it to factory defaults with no difference.
    Any suggestions?
Does iTunes 11 work with 1st generation iPod.

This is the 1st gen iPod shuffle, that looks like a white USB flash drive, with a built-in USB plug?  FYI - This document shows the four shuffle models
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1719
If it's a 1st (or 2nd) gen shuffle, select it in iTunes.  Toward the top of the iTunes window, there are two buttons that say Settings AND On This iPod.  The Settings screen is probably what you already used, "to set certain options."  Click on On This iPod.  This screen shows a list of songs that are currently on the shuffle, and you can use this screen to remove songs from the shuffle (and change song order), once you have songs on it.
At the bottom of this screen, there are Autofill controls.  That is one way to load the shuffle.  You can "automatically fill" the shuffle from your iTunes music library, or from a playlist.
To add individual songs, drag songs from your iTunes library and drop them on the shuffle.  The easiest way to do this is to use the iTunes sidebar (along left side of iTunes window).  If the sidebar is hidden, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  Find the shuffle in the sidebar, under the heading DEVICES.  From your iTunes library, drag songs (or other audio items) and drop them on the shuffle.

  • 10 gig iPod won't connect.....

    Greetings
I've changed the original battery from the 1st gen 10 gig scroll wheel, but now the iPod won't connect.
It has lost its charging indicator, but feels warm to the touch. I can still play all the music that is on there, but can't see it via iTunes or finder.
I can see the ipod via the firewire, i.e. about this mac, more info, firewire, shows that the iPod is connected, but has it listed as version 0.0.
I've tried this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363 but no joy.
Any ideas from the brains trust?
    Cheers

Make sure you have tried a different FireWire port, and shutdown (power off) and restart your computer if you have not done so since having this issue.
You can try a different FireWire cable. If this is a 1st gen iPod, it uses a regular FireWire (400) cable.
Since the iPod is seen (somewhat), does the iPod show up in Disk Utility? If so, use Disk Utility to reformat (erase) the iPod's hard drive in the Erase tab. Make sure the iPod's hard drive (not the volume indented under the sidebar) is selected in the sidebar. Select +Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format type. If that procedure succeeds, run iTunes again and if it is seen now, use the Restore button to install and initialize the iPod's software.
It is possible that when you opened the iPod to replace the battery, you inadvertently disconnected the hard drive. Therefore, the iPod is "seen" by the system, but the hard drive is not. I have also read some reports that if the replacement battery is just a tad too thick, it puts pressure on the hard drive and causes the platter not to spin. So you may want to open it up again, check the hard drive connection, and try it with the back side off.
