1st gen 4GB nano won't power up with USB

My new-to-me old Nano doesn't work on battery power, even after new battery installed, but powers up and plays when docked onto speaker. No big deal, and merely mentioned as a possibly related symptom...main issue is that it won't power up using USB cable to PC. My other nano works fine with the same cable. The bad one gives an Apple logo, then backlighting flashes on for a mere fraction of a second and then it shuts down. Then about three seconds later it all repeats again. There's only 25 songs on this 4GB model. I could care less about this problem if only my music was already loaded onto it. It cost me $15 on ebay and $5 for a battery, so $20 into a useless unit bites. $30 could have gotten me a good working one...hopefully this can be revived for cheap?

Well, I tried to other things... I turned off the backlighting to see if less current draw would help. It didn't. Also, the backlighting option gets deleted off the main screen menu after it dies/reboots.
I also tried connecting to PC with the ipod screen ribbon cable disconnected just for kicks...still a no-go.
I just want to load it up with songs...sigh.

  • MY 1st GEN IPOD NANO WON'T TURN OFF IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

It just seems to have a problem recognizing when i'm pushing the play/pause button or if I'm trying to shut it off. It has had water damage is their any way to make it shut off. PLEASE.

Hi, i had the same problem with my 1st gen 4GB nano. I solved it by chosing not to visualize the clock on the ipod display. you can change this option from the ipod prefernces. Apparently visualizing the clock on the display triggers some kind of bug.... Don't ask me why or how, but it worked! good luck:)

  • IPod touch (1st gen) audio pauses, won't power off, invisible in iTunes

For about a week now, my iPod touch (1st generation, iOS 3.1.3) has been acting funny. When I plug it in to my MacBook (OS X 10.6.5), iTunes (10.1, 54) does not recognize the device, the wireless signal indicator does not show at all, the battery meter is incorrect, the audio pauses randomly, and I cannot turn off the device (by holding down the sleep button for 10 seconds and then sliding the "Slide to power off" control). I am able to force a power off by holding down the sleep button and the home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. After a manual power down, things are normal again, but the iPod touch reverts to the same weirdness after a few hours. Any ideas?

Ever since I uninstalled the TGI Black Friday app (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tgi-black-friday/id335329737?mt=8), things are back to normal now. Very strange.

  • 1st gen iPod Nano won't mount in iTunes but will in Finder.

Cable: Fine -- works with other iPods. Other cables work fine with other iPods too.
iTunes -- uninstalled and reinstalled. No effect.
iPod nano -- downloaded iTunes for Windows, ran it in Parallels on the same mac, managed to restore the iPod nano (alas, as a Windows flavour one now).
Finder can still mount it as a disk; since iTunes on the mac won't recognise it... I'm beginning to wonder what on earth's happened to iTunes!
    Any ideas?

    Hello rgc123456,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines various steps that you can take and may lead to a potential resolution. The article refers to an iPod that is not recognized in both iTunes and Mac desktop, however most steps are applicable for your situation as well.

  • 1st Gen iPod Nano won't work with new Nissan interface.

I just bought an 09 Nissan Cube that has the factory ipod interface where you can control everything through the steering wheel and radio, well my ipod has been great, yes old, but works great and always has in other cars such as the Scion xB I just traded in on it, using the same type of system.
Well, when I plug it into my new Cube, it charges fine, but just keeps saying "Ok to Disconnect" and goes back and forth to that and the 1st menu screen all the time.
I did a reset where you hold the middle button and the menu button for 6 seconds, but that did not fix it. I'm at a loss.
I know the interface works because we tried another newer ipod and my iphone works as well.
Any ideas? I don't want to spend the cash to buy another ipod.

Ah, i seemed to have fixed it! Well i've been trying for a few weeks now to sort this out and as soon as i put up a post it works. Oh well at least its working now. It seems like that the iPod needs to be playing BEFORE the iTrip is plugged in the turn it on.
    I'll get me coat...

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:

reinstalled my windows operating system and decided to put on windows 8.  After loading all of my music back into a freshly installed itunes, my 4th gen ipod is not recognized by itunes.  My 1st gen ipod nano works with no problem.  I can eliminate any problems with the cable and connection.
I've stopped and started the service, and also have performed cold reboots.
Nothing seems to have helped the situation.
    Help!

  • Having problems syncing 1st gen Ipod nano.

I have a 1st gen Ipod nano (i'm pretty sure it's a 1st gen) that I gave to my mother because I got an Ipod touch. She has her own Itunes accout on her own computer and is trying to connect my old Ipod to her computer/itunes so she can use it and download her music. The problem is the sync function is not working. It will not highlight and stays grey and unable to sync. So can anyone help? I thought I was being nice giving her my Ipod nano for her to use but it's no good is she's stuck with my music and can't put her own on.

Your mother will have to restore (wipe it out) the iPod Nano.  After doing that, she will be able to sync her own music.

  • 1st Gen Ipod Nano  - Shuffle Songs Issue

Everyday I take my 1st gen ipod nano with me for a walk and just select shuffle songs. My walk takes about an hour, but my nano in shuffle mode seems to play alot of the same songs over and over everyday in shuffle mode. I have almost 800 songs on the nano. Is there someway of getting my nano to shuffle up the songs a little better so that I'm not hearing the same songs over and over?

I am having the exact same issue with my iPod, 5th generation. I would like to know if there is a way to change the setup so it will shuffle it better.

  • Do I get a 1st gen ipod nano back when I send for a replacement?

Do I get a 1st gen ipod nano back when I send for a replacement? I have a black 2GB that I got from my grandfather for Christmas years ago. I want the same one(1st gen black 2GB) sent back. I didn't realize I had to send my original back until I was finished. I don't want a 6th gen, I have one already.

That's not good. I just sent mine back a few days ago. Great I want my 1st gen Nano back. I don't want a 6th gen, already have one. And that 1st gen was special. I thought I was getting a replacement. They better be willing to send back my 1st gen if I can't get a replacement 1st gen nano back.

  • IPod mini 1st gen 4gb

I have an iPod mini 1st gen 4gb. When I click the wheel to advance to the next song nothing happens. The wheel works fine otherwise. I have reset and restored the iPod several times. What am I not doing?

    Robert,
Besides the scrolling feature built into the click-wheel, there is a microswitch button for each function.  In other words, Menu, Forwards, Backwards, Play/Pause and Center Button each have their own switch that’s activated when you press that part of the wheel.
It’s possible that the switch for the Forward function has failed.  Does that button work in ANY menu area.  Do the other buttons work?  If you’re in the middle of an album, can you go backwards in the list of songs?
I was just working on the click-wheel on one of my Mini a couple of days ago.  I bought a used one and the prev other had some kind of decal over the scroll and the adhesive virtually glued the center button to the rest of the wheel.
Hopefully, it’s just the Mini’s click-wheels are they’re available on eBay for about $10 and can be user-replaced, if you’re VERY careful.
I also have an old 1st gen Mini that could be a parts donor and could do this for you.  I could also replace the harddrive with a 32gb Compact Flash card and new battery  while the Mini is opened, if your interested.  I’ve done a BUNCH of those and they work great.  I'm even selling one of them on eBay now.

  • Are AASPs allowed to charge customers that will qualify for the 1st Gen iPod nano recall?

Are AASPs allowed to charge customers that will qualify for the 1st Gen iPod nano recall? There are no Apple stores in the Philippines, only AASPs. Early reports from customers claim that one of the AASPs is charging a 10% discounted price for the replacement. We need clarification from Apple if the AASPs are allowed to do this since this seems counter to what the replacement program is supposed to do. I will not name the AASP for now until I personally confirm the reports.

There are no Apple stores in my country either, i went yesterday to one of those AASP but they didnt charge me or said anything about a price, just checked the screen, wheel and frame i guess to see if there was anything broken because they didnt turn it on. Confirmed the serial number, gave me a receipt and told me to come back in six weeks with the receipt to get my ipod back. I dont think they are supposed to charge you

  • Reconditioning the Finish on my 1st Gen. Nano

I've looked for info on this subject around the site & couldn't seem to get anywhere, so I thought maybe ya'll could help! I have a white 1st Gen. Nano with an average amount of minor-moderate scrapes and scratches on it. Ideally, I would like to be able to send my nano to Apple to let them recondition it and get it looking as close to new as possible. Does anyone know if Apple even provides this service? About how much do they charge? How long does it take to get your iPod back?
Also, if anyone could recommend products they've used (that have actually worked) that would be appreciated! Thanks!

No, Apple does not provide this type of service.
I used this on my 1st Generation black Nano: http://www.radtech.us/Products/IceCreme.aspx
