I am trying to watch a movie I bought direct from itunes, and it will not play for the life of me. What do i do?

I would certainly agree that something has expired - possibly a key or certificate. I do think it's quite poor that Apple had not anticipated this for the ATV1 - a software update should not be necessary - an occasional password entry for account authorisation would not be objectionable to keep certificates/keys up to date and should have been implemented. The stuff that's affected is paid for after all! No wonder many don't bother paying for media and just download stuff illegally. DRM only impinges on legitimate customers.

This seems to have started at the end of October and may be some kind of 'authorisation expiry' on the original unit that needs updating.
Solution include:
Purchase something on the AppleTV1 itself with DRM (a free TV Show episode might be an idea if yiou can find one).
Remove the connection to itunes by removing the iTunes library from AppleTV's Computers>Settings menu, then add it back again.
Remember this will wipe synced content from the AppleTV if AppleTV1 is syncing (My Movies/TV Shows etc) as opposed to streaming (My Shared Movies etc) from that itunes library. In theory direct purchases on AppleTV that have never transferred to itunes might survive the 'wipe for a clean slate for a new sync' process that happens when you remove a sync library but don't risk it and right click on the AppleTV Device in itunes, choose Transfer Purchases if there are any prior to resetting the AppleTV Computers entry and readding the library. If AppleTV is streaming only it's very quick to remove the libarry and re-add it as there's nothing to sync when you re-establish the connection - it works I've done it. Purchasing a protected music video on my other AppleTV1 which was synced also worked.

Why do I get an error message after renting a movie on apple tv, " this tv is not able to play this move"

I may have answered my own question. After some more research, it seems that the videos that won't play have a FairPlay value associated with them and they were all purchased prior to June 2009. Now I just need to figure out how to get around this.

I changed my dads password, then went back to sync my apps and when it came to the Authorization, I entered his account name and the new password (which was by the way accepted and changed correctly) to have it come up on the screen as the incorrect password...REALLY!!! I went back and changed the password again...guess what? Same result "inncorect password".
As I mentioned my dad PASSED AWAY, there is no way I can ask him what his password originally was, i can't accesses his email account as it no longer exists.
What am I supposed to do, this is very frustrating.
If I use my new account that's in my name, the Authorization screen just keeps asking for my Dads account.

If you are within 14 days of purchase you can still return the iPhone and get the phone that suits your needs, however, I think you will find that no matter which phone you get the content provider will want to know how you are going to pay for future purchases. For Android phones it is Google, and they will certainly want to know.

You have to sign into your account and verify that you have a valid payment mendo specified in your account
Settings>iTunes and App Store>Apple ID>View Account
