1st Gen C2D MBP -- need to reseat BT module.  Where is it?

About a month back I brought my MBP (15" 2.16GHz C2D, late 2006) into a "local" Apple Store to have the display replaced since the backlight had a manufacturing flaw that finally showed up. Applecare covered that, which was nice.
However, last night I tried to sync by phone via BT for the first time since I got it back, and nothing happened. I looked closer, and the BT icon was greyed out, and peeking at More Info showed my that the system no longer recognized a bluetooth module.
My guess is that the Genius who repaird my MBP left something disconnected. I called AppleCare back and they said they'd fix it if I'd ship it in or bring it back into the store.
My problem is the closest store is a bit over an hour away. I don't have the time to make that trip, nor am I excited about spending all that gas money to get something fixed that's due to an error on their part.
I'm a pc tech by trade, so removing the screws and opening it up doesn't scare me (I'll need to do that in a month or so when I upgrade the hard drive anyway).
I Googled for any info on where the BT stuff is located, but can't find anything. Can anyone here help me identify the BT piece once I have the cover off?
Thanks.

You will have to find the exact manual for your machine and download it.
Good luck!

  • Multi-Touch Right click feature on 1st Gen. MBP

I have a 1,1 MBP, and the new ones are pretty cool, but not awesome enough to convince me to buy a new one. However, the right click feature on the multi-touch pads are amazing. I'm wondering if any one has figured out how to get it to work on an older Pro.
The only reason why I think that it's possible is that the track-pad of the older mbp does recognize when there are two fingers present and allows you to scroll up down left right etc. Why would it not be coupled with a click to allow for a right click function?
    Anyway, thanks for your time.

It's true that the first 15" MBPs did not support two-finger taps (although my 1st gen 17" did). I thought that had been fixed in a software update. So, when you look in System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Trackpad tab, there's no option for "Tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click"? (Clicking has to be enabled for that, else the option is place 2 fingers on pad and click button). There should be!
There was a hack released just after the 17" came out to get that functionality onto the 15" MBPs at the time, you can check it out here:

  • My 1st gen AP will not not connect to time cap.

My 1st gen APE will only connect to my newer APE and not my main base station which is a time capsule.  See pic below. It used to show both AEs with dotted line from the time capsule and it looks now that the older APE is connected off the other APE.  Nothing will connect to the 1st gen my wireless is not extend.

Since you are using a wireless connection, you must rely on wireless signal strength in a setup like this......with a significant compromise in performance as a result.
Assuming that the older Express really is an 802.11n version.....and not one of the older 802.11b/g versions of the product.....the 1st Gen AirPort Express needs to be.......
    1) Located about the same distance from the Time Capsule as the newer AirPort Express
    2) Located closer to the Time Capsule than it is to the newer AirPort Express
When both conditions are met, the 1st Gen Express will connect to the Time Capsule and the graphic in AirPort Utility will change to show that the newer Express and older Express are side by side horizontally, not vertically as they are now.
As it stands now, the older Express is "joining" the network, not extending it. That is because Apple will only allow you to "extend" the network one level, not two.

Is there any free apps and games that will run on iPod touch 1st gen. IOS 3.1.3 if so where can I get them?

To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.

  • Calendar app to sync from input to 1st Gen iTouch to iPad/MB/MBP?

I would like to able to input my work schedule onto my ipod touch 1st gen, iOS 3.1.3 and then have it auto sync to my iPad 2, and my wife's and mine MB and MBP (OS 10.6).
I assume Google's calendar might have to be involved which is fine.
Know of a good calendar app that would have to support the older iOS for my 1st gen iPod Touch and do the aforementioned auto syncing?

  • 1st Gen iMac died-cloned HD onto new iMac-software needs to be deactivated?

My old G5 iMac (1st gen) died - capacitors. The Genius Bar confirmed and in a thoughtful gesture removed the HD so that when I purchased a new iMac it would be easier for me to transport the HD & for them to clone (he said they would do it free).
There's no way I could afford to buy a new iMac. eBay to the rescue: I purchased a used iMac G5 17", 2 GHz, 2 GB ram, 160 GB. (A little step up from the old 17" 1.8 GHz, 1GB ram, 80 GB.) I took it to Tekserve; they charged me $60 to clone.
Everything is hunky-dory. Knock-on-wood, the eBay used iMac is working fine (this is still the first week).
Today I launched Photoshop to discover that the app would be valid for only 5 more days! It seems that I am limited to 2 users: my old iMac and my laptop. If I deactivate the old iMac the message says I can activate the new iMac as a user.
Make sense? But my old iMac is just a chassis and a separate(d) HD. How do I communicate with it to deactivate it as a 'user?'
    (1) Am I going to need to take my old HD back to Tekserve (auth service) within the next 4 days and have them hook it up and deactivate?
Since my new iMac is cloned & running & backed up, I was thinking of erasing the old HD and selling it for parts.
    (2) Is there a way for me (I'm not very technically savvy) to erase my old HD that is separated from the iMac and sitting in an anti-static bag in order to sell it?
    (3) Is my best option to have Tekserve do both: 'deactivate' and then erase it? Their charge will impact the potential profit I might make selling it for parts...
    (4) Short of me launching every software app, are there any others that, in your experience, will have this same 'deactivation' issue (before I erase that old HD forever)?
Thanks to all esteemed gurus for any and all advice!

I ididn't think Adobe would be helpful. Nut lo & behold, they were understanding and I was able to activate the software on my cloned iMac.
I didn't think it could be so simple!
Meanwhile, I have taken the old 80 GB hard drive into Tekserve for a clean install and will put it up on eBay for parts/repair along with the 'chassis.'

  • I cannot back up my iPad 1st Gen on the new version of iTunes, I get an error saying it is incompatible.  I need to back it up so I can then restore into my new iPad Air.

How do I get around this?  The iPad one has the most current iOS allowed for the 1st gen per settings.
    Help!

this is a follow up from the profane post earlier....
i have done this twice in two other posts..
here is my problem.. i started off trying to update itunes, it failed twice and said i needed to install manually via tools.
the only place to get to tools is the pop up box that appears when you click check for updates.. if there is an available update then the pop up shows up with the quick time and itunes files to download. so i finally figured that out. i clicked on tools and manual update, four files were saved to a file. Apple mobile device support, another one similar, itunes, and another one i cant remember. I only downloaded the itunes file seeing as though thats all i needed to accomplish in the first place.
so then i restarted my computer bc you need to reboot and then reopen itunes for update to take effect. once i have itunes back open i plugged in my new 5s which i am trying to sync to my computer to get all my stuff back bc i lost my previous phone over the weekend.. once i plugged the phone in an error stating i needed to unistall the apple mobile device support and itunes and then reinstall. well i dont know where those files were originally stored on my computer AND since my itunes was updated, just not the other 3 associated files, when i click check for updates it says its up to date and then pop up containing the quick time and itunes does not pop up thus i cant get back to the tools tab to manually save the 4 files again.
so i was just going to uninstall itunes all together and then i thought well what happens if it erases all my photos apps songs etc... which would defeat the whole purpose in the first place of me trying to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back.
so i literally have no idea what to do at this point.. if you have read this you are probably just as confused as me...

  • IPhone 4s iOS 6.0.1 and iPad 1st gen. iOS 5.0. What do I need to do?

Wifi connection problem between iPhone 4s iOS 6.0.1 and iPad 1st gen. iOS 5.0. What do I need to do? I've reset the network on each and nothing. Please help.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • 1st gen MBP won't connect to WiFi when WPA2-PSK [AES] security is enabled

    Hi all,
I've got a pretty vexing problem involving my old MacBook Pro and my WiFi, and I'm hoping to find an explanation or solution to it. Recently, my husband purchased a brand-spanking new (PC) laptop with n wireless capabilities, and I've been trying to reconfigure my home network so that the router is broadcasting in 2.4 gHz  b/g/n mode. When I set the router (a Netgear N600 dual band) to broadcast in "up to 300Mbps" mode, it tells me  that "WPA-PSK [TKIP] may only operate at "Up to 54Mbps" (legacy G) rate, not N rate. NETGEAR recommends that you use WPA2-PSK [AES] to get full N rate support."
So, naturally I go and set the security to WPA2, and my 1st gen MacBook Pro (it only has a CoreDuo, and hence, a b/g card) promptly proceeds to spazz out. Sometimes it sees the network, sometimes it doesn't. When it does see the network, the connection times out, and I can never successfully establish a connection. Right now, I've got the Wifi broadcasting up to 300Mbps, but the security is set to mixed WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES], so I'm not even sure if my husband is getting Wireless-N functionality on his end of things.
Has anyone else had a problem like this, and is there any solution for it? Should I upgrade my wireless card (Can I even upgrade my wireless card???), is it a software  issue, etc. I'm aware that there have been a number of issues with wireless connectivity in Mac laptops over the past few years, and I really hope this isn't one of them.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I believe the issue is the fact that the Netgear router supports wide-channel operation in the 2.4 GHz band. This is how they are able to advertize that you can get up to 300 Mbps. Apple computers/routers only support narrow-channels on this band.
What I would suggest is that if the Netgear has an option to both use narrow-channels and WPA2/AES security, to use this combination. Your Mac should be able to connect and his PC should get at least 120-130 Mbps. Note: Although not broadcasting at 300 Mbps, the Netgear will still be operating in the 802.11n radio mode.
