1st gen iPod Nano won't mount in iTunes but will in Finder.

Cable: Fine -- works with other iPods. Other cables work fine with other iPods too.
iTunes -- uninstalled and reinstalled. No effect.
iPod nano -- downloaded iTunes for Windows, ran it in Parallels on the same mac, managed to restore the iPod nano (alas, as a Windows flavour one now).
Finder can still mount it as a disk; since iTunes on the mac won't recognise it... I'm beginning to wonder what on earth's happened to iTunes!
Any ideas?

Hello rgc123456,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines various steps that you can take and may lead to a potential resolution. The article refers to an iPod that is not recognized in both iTunes and Mac desktop, however most steps are applicable for your situation as well.

Hi, i had the same problem with my 1st gen 4GB nano. I solved it by chosing not to visualize the clock on the ipod display. you can change this option from the ipod prefernces. Apparently visualizing the clock on the display triggers some kind of bug.... Don't ask me why or how, but it worked! good luck:)

  • My 5th Gen iPod Nano won't connect to itunes or computer, just keeps resetting. Reinstalled itunes to no avail, other ipods connect fine...help please

I re-installed i-tunes but this didn't solve the issue.  Other iPods including additional 5th generation nanos connect and sync just fine.  When it's plugged into the computer, it says "Connected...Eject before disconnecting" but doesn't show in itunes or the computer, then the ipod resets and the cycle begins again.  It plays music just fine.  It also plays fine when directly connected by USB to a Toyota Avalon.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this?  Thanks!

  • 1st Gen iPod Nano won't work with new Nissan interface.

I just bought an 09 Nissan Cube that has the factory ipod interface where you can control everything through the steering wheel and radio, well my ipod has been great, yes old, but works great and always has in other cars such as the Scion xB I just traded in on it, using the same type of system.
Well, when I plug it into my new Cube, it charges fine, but just keeps saying "Ok to Disconnect" and goes back and forth to that and the 1st menu screen all the time.
I did a reset where you hold the middle button and the menu button for 6 seconds, but that did not fix it. I'm at a loss.
I know the interface works because we tried another newer ipod and my iphone works as well.
Any ideas? I don't want to spend the cash to buy another ipod.

Ah, i seemed to have fixed it! Well i've been trying for a few weeks now to sort this out and as soon as i put up a post it works. Oh well at least its working now. It seems like that the iPod needs to be playing BEFORE the iTrip is plugged in the turn it on.
    I'll get me coat...

  • My 6th Gen iPod nano is not recognised in iTunes, but is in windows.

Up until this morning my ipod was working fine with iTunes. I updates iTunes this morning and then a message came up stating that iTunes knew there was a device but it couldnt access it or something along those lines. It said if this problem continued I should reinstall iTunes. I evenutally reinstalled iTunes, I also restarted my iPod and stopped and starting the services. I tried to delete the Temp file in Local, but it wouldn't let me. I have tried restarting my laptop, plugging the USB into a different port. Nothing seems to be working.
Any suggestions on how to get it working again?

  • Having problems syncing 1st gen Ipod nano.

I have a 1st gen Ipod nano (i'm pretty sure it's a 1st gen) that I gave to my mother because I got an Ipod touch. She has her own Itunes accout on her own computer and is trying to connect my old Ipod to her computer/itunes so she can use it and download her music. The problem is the sync function is not working. It will not highlight and stays grey and unable to sync. So can anyone help? I thought I was being nice giving her my Ipod nano for her to use but it's no good is she's stuck with my music and can't put her own on.

Your mother will have to restore (wipe it out) the iPod Nano.  After doing that, she will be able to sync her own music.

  • 1st Gen Ipod Nano  - Shuffle Songs Issue

Everyday I take my 1st gen ipod nano with me for a walk and just select shuffle songs. My walk takes about an hour, but my nano in shuffle mode seems to play alot of the same songs over and over everyday in shuffle mode. I have almost 800 songs on the nano. Is there someway of getting my nano to shuffle up the songs a little better so that I'm not hearing the same songs over and over?

I am having the exact same issue with my iPod, 5th generation. I would like to know if there is a way to change the setup so it will shuffle it better.

  • Do I get a 1st gen ipod nano back when I send for a replacement?

Do I get a 1st gen ipod nano back when I send for a replacement? I have a black 2GB that I got from my grandfather for Christmas years ago. I want the same one(1st gen black 2GB) sent back. I didn't realize I had to send my original back until I was finished. I don't want a 6th gen, I have one already.

That's not good. I just sent mine back a few days ago. Great I want my 1st gen Nano back. I don't want a 6th gen, already have one. And that 1st gen was special. I thought I was getting a replacement. They better be willing to send back my 1st gen if I can't get a replacement 1st gen nano back.

  • Are AASPs allowed to charge customers that will qualify for the 1st Gen iPod nano recall?

Are AASPs allowed to charge customers that will qualify for the 1st Gen iPod nano recall? There are no Apple stores in the Philippines, only AASPs. Early reports from customers claim that one of the AASPs is charging a 10% discounted price for the replacement. We need clarification from Apple if the AASPs are allowed to do this since this seems counter to what the replacement program is supposed to do. I will not name the AASP for now until I personally confirm the reports.

There are no Apple stores in my country either, i went yesterday to one of those AASP but they didnt charge me or said anything about a price, just checked the screen, wheel and frame i guess to see if there was anything broken because they didnt turn it on. Confirmed the serial number, gave me a receipt and told me to come back in six weeks with the receipt to get my ipod back. I dont think they are supposed to charge you

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:

  • Itunes7 will not recognize 1st Gen Ipod Nano but Windows XP will. Why?

    Hi,
My daughter has a year old ipod nano that is recognized by windows but not itunes 7 on multiple computers. It says this three times in the diagnostic. Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try this otherwise surf this site as there are is a lot of helpful material about this very problem
Plug in Ipod and when windows recognises it right click on the ipod in my computer then select format. You will get several options first try selecting quick format. then exit and restart itunes. Itunes will say it needs to reset factory settings. Do this and follow prompts. This did not work for me. But it may for you. I had to do a full format inside my computer which simply means that I did not tick the quick format box. Then repeated the itunes process. This still did not work so as a last ditch effort after all this I did another quick format in my computer and this finally worked .
So three windows reformats and three itunes resets and finally itunes accepted my ipod again

  • 2nd Gen iPod Nano won't sync

My stepson's 2nd Gen iPod just won't sync.  It behaves normally in iTunes and doesn't cause any problems or symptoms with the computer.  Made a playlist and selected it to only sync to that playlist, shows that everything is fine, click sync- nothing happens.  I went through every step on the website's troubleshooting pages- reset the iPod, restarted the computer, tried it on different USB ports, and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.  I tried to restore it and it went through the download process untill the end when a window popped up saying "error downloading software".  I'm at a loss and feel bad for him because this was a Christmas present from a family member and now it won't work : /  Any more experienced users have any ideas?  I called tech support and they said they couldn't help me unless I paid the $29.99 fee because this iPod is too old for a warranty >: /

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
lost libraryHow to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • 6th Gen iPod Nano won't sync to Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz PowerPC iTunes 9.2

My iPod classic bit the dust so I bought a new iPod Nano 6th Gen. My Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz PowerPC can only run iTunes 9.2. From what I can tell this new iPod Nano won't work with my Powerbook, which is hard to believe since my old school iPod from the early 2000s worked great until I dropped it and it split in half.
My iPhone 3Gs syncs fine so it is incredibly annoying and disturbing that a new iPod Nano 6th gen. won't sync.
If in order to get this iPod Nano to work with my current system I'm required to upgrade my iTunes from 9.2 to 10 then I need to upgrade my OS from OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.5 which requires that I upgrade computer by purchasing an entirely new laptop then I might just have to revert to my old school Sony DiscMan.
My iPod Classic 2nd gen. worked great until it broke and my iPhone Gs syncs great, so I can't believe that this new iPod Nano 6th gen. won't work without a simple fix.
Come Apple, don't fail me now.

Your problem is completely different from the original post. The OP could not run the correct version of iTunes on their older computer. You're much more likely to get the help you need by starting your own thread with a properly descriptive subject line.
If you need instructions on how to start a new thread, see this link:
