1st Gen Touch Dead?

So my 1st gen Touch decided to just stop working. I've tried restarting/restoring, and the recovery process and nothing happens, completely black screen, it doesn't even show up on my MacBook, not even in System Profiler under the USB tab. Any ideas on how to fix it?

after some research, discovered that my Liquid Submersion Indicator had been activated (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3302) which is probably the reason it isn't turning on. Didn't drop it in water or spill anything on it but I was pretty sweaty when it went down. Still looking into fixes, but it seems the Apple repair option is almost as expensive as getting a new one ($149.) Here's hoping the rumored 4th gen comes out soon.

  • Win7 Not Installing Drivers for 1st Gen Touch

    Hello folks,
I've been trying to get my 1st Gen Touch up and running in the most recent version of iTunes, installed onto a dual-boot machine (32-bit Vista and Win7). In Vista, the Touch works perfectly. Flip over to Win7, and no dice. I can hear the chime sounding that a USB device has been plugged in and removed, but at no point does any drivers actually install, no info pop-up that new hardware detected, and no iPod listed in the USB devices of Device Manager.
I've tried following the directives of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1852 to no effect; everything looks to be in order. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. The only, and I mean only, sign of life I've seen out of Win7 is the one time I managed to fluke my way into Recovery Mode on the Touch, at which point it was recognized as a generic iPod in Win7. I just didn't think that a recovery wipe and reinstall would be a necessary step to a normal installation.
Further, I've also tried running the iTunes program in compatibility mode for Vista, and with Admin privileges for Win7 mode, to no effect. Does anyone have any ideas on what I'm overlooking? I know the hardware works; this has to be software...
    Thanks!

I got it working, though the steps I had to use were draconian in measure, and not what I would reasonably expect the average user to endure just to get their iPods working. Since the Touch was showing signs of life in Factory Restore mode, I let it do that once. Wiped all the data out of it, but errored on the reinstall. Curious, I thought. I had Device Manager up at the time, and saw a generic 'iPod' entry in Portable Devices.
Okay, fair enough... I restart the factory restore, wait for the generic 'iPod' entry. Right-click, Properties, 'Update Driver', search automatically. Suddenly, lo and behold, the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows up under USB Devices, and my Touch starts working as pretty as you please. I'm fortunate that I can go back into Vista to re-sync to get my music and apps back, but at least it's working now. Might I suggest seeing if there's a less Nuclear Option process for accomplishing the same goal?

  • HELP w/ 1st Gen Touch - want apps!

I have a 1st Gen Touch (I think), anyhow, the current version it is running is 1.1.5. I am not able to put apps on it currently, and I'm pretty sure there is another version that allows me to do so.. However, my iTunes tells me that it has the latest version of software! HELP! Everything on-lines just tells me to do the normal check for upgrades, but it's not giving me anything, and I can't put any apps on it!

  • Can I attach a bluetooth device on my 1st Gen Touch.

    Hi,
I am wondering if I could attach a bluetooth device on my 1st gen touch and then update my Touch to Ver 3 so that I can use the bluetooth features. Is this possible?
    JV

Your friend installed an app that communicates with bluetooth devices? Please clarify.
No, his friend has an iPod video, which cannot have apps installed on it. His friend attached a Bluetooth accessory for using Bluetooth headphones.

  • Finding iOS2 Apps for 1st Gen Touch

So I've just got a hand me down 1st gen touch and I restored it as the easiest way to personalise it to be mine. The backup did not work so I've lost all the apps that were on it other than the iOs apps. When I go into the App Store on it to find new apps there is no apparent way to just view iOS 2 compliant apps. I'm tearing my hair out just trying to find a solitaire app.
    Any suggestions?
BTW just made the sticky Home button much better with the alcohol trick.

There is no way to view apps by iOS version. And it's highly unlikely you'll find any that will work with iOS 2. I'd suggest you upgrade to iOS 3.1.3. See:
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
You'll then at least have a chance of finding apps that you can run, though there are fewer and fewer as developers update to support the newer versions of iOS. Again you'll just have to look app by app. Looking in appshopper.com may make it easier.
    Regards.

  • IPod 1st Gen (Touch wheel, 10GB) isn't recognized - missing software?

Recently, my 80GB video iPod decided to simply die on me, so I dug out my very first iPod, from 2001 or '02 I believe.
It turns on fine, can scroll through menus, but there's nothing on it anymore - plug it into my computer (firewire-to-firewire), and the iPod goes through a menu where there's the disc and a magnifying glass and eventually a check mark (connotating that everything's fine) - but it never docks onto the computer or shows up on iTunes.
I've SCOURED the internet for old iPod software updates, trying to find one early enough, so it can recognize it and I can restore and hopefully the problem will be fixed - but there's been SO many iPods since then, it's ancient, and no support was found anywhere.
Does anyone have a solution, or a link to the earliest of iPod updaters? I looked for documentation, but it was 9 years ago - I don't have the CD anymore or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*In the 'About' menu on the iPod, the current version that's installed is 1.5 - don't know if that matters.
**I'm trying to connect to a 15-inch PowerBook G4 (Aluminum?), currently installed with iTunes 8

The current version of iTunes should be able to connect to even the 1st gen iPod. The one you have is 2nd gen, if it's the one with the four clicking buttons around the touch wheel. I have one of those, and although I use it as my little emergency/maintenance FireWire startup drive (because the screen failed on it), it is still recognized by iTunes on my Mac. Over FireWire, of course.
The first thing you should try is to put it into Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Note: The procedure for your iPod is at the bottom, where it says +If you have an older iPod model without a Click Wheel+.
If that works, connect it to the computer. Hopefully it will appear both on your desktop and in iTunes. If so, use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize its software. The latest available version of the software for that iPod will be installed.
You may also want to try a different FireWire cable. It's just a regular cable, so you don't have to use the thin white one.

  • 3.0 and 1st gen touch

Will the new update work for the ipod touch 1st gen?

Yes, but all the features won't be available to the first generation because of hardware limitations. The update will be $9.95USD and will be released Wednesday June 17.

  • Ipod touch 1st gen. touch screen freezes up

I have a 1st gen ipod touch, after a year the touch screen freezes up constantly. I reboot, restart, re sync, upgrade, updated firmware, made sure sure the browser was cleared, I don't even have 1/2 the memory used, now & then it will unfreeze, but most of the time it is frozen. Very unreliable. Thank god it is not a phone. I even took it into the so called "Genius Bar" and they just told me to buy a new one...had this thing a little over a year...and they really think I am going to purchase more Apple products? It is pretty sad when the folks that make this crap can't diagnose it...
    Anybody else in this boat?

Try restoring to factory defaults/new iPod if you have not already done that.  If you still have the problem then you very likely have a hardware problems and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Power button not working on 1st gen touch

I bought my iPod Touch 1st gen from currys, it was an ex-display. It came with 1 year warrenty, but we cannot find the receipt. I was told by someone if I take it to the Apple store they can fix it without a receipt? My closest apple store is birmingham, any help is appreciated.

It was bought in april, it was an ex-display came with the one year warrenty but we don't know where the receipt is. Can't it be taken to the apple store without one?

  • 1st gen touch won't charge with iphone cables...but there's more issues...

so i got an ipod touch off fleabay...tried charging it on the cable i charge my 3gs with, doesn't charge or even recognize it on my computer (nothing happens at all)...as far as i knew any older equipment would work on newer cables...is this incorrect?
to make things more confusing i bought a "first gen" touch data cable...it does nothing...no charge or recognition by computer...only way i've successfully charged the touch is to hook it up to an old speaker system or in my car to my pioneer touchscreen...but this doesn't help with putting any movies/music on it.
googling for hours results in tons of recommendations for getting new "high quality" cables or doing a restore on the ipod...so i did a restore and it's stuck in the "connect to itunes" mode now...but still isn't recognized by either of my computers...
any suggestions are greatly appreciated. i'm about to throw this thing out the window lol

    anyone?

  • HT4623 1st gen touch, downloaded version 3.1, apps worked for 1 day now will not open any

1st generation touch, downloaded version 3.1.3, apps worked for an evening, now you tap them the screen blinks but the won't open.  Are apps still possible on this old of touch?  If so, how do I fix it?

    Greg545 wrote:
Then why did they work to begin with and not now?
If the apps are compatible with ios 3.1.3 or earlier, then they will work.
If they are not, then they will not.
Since you have given no information at all about the apps, it is hard to say why.
Are the apps compatible with your ios version?
If so, did you try the basics from the manual?
Hard to help when you provide no info.
