  • Attempting iOS 3.2.1 update, iPad could not be restored, unknown error 1014

Tried to update my iPad wifi+3G tonight. Got error message in iTunes:
The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1014).
I'm stuck now and can't use my iPad because the iPad goes to recovery mode, and when I try again, the same thing happens. Have tried about 6 times. One time, tried and I believe succeeded in getting into DFU mode - dark screen on iPad while iTunes said it had found a device in recovery mode - but that restore ended up the same way.
No iPad now. Bummed. Is this hardware? I hope not. Please help if you know anything about this. I can find very little about this error.

I am still unable to restore my iPad, and it is therefore still not usable.
Here is the loop I have been going around - NOTE - this is not a recipe for success here - I'm just describing what I'm seeing and doing detail, in the hopes there will be an additional clue here in how to fix things:
    1) Select files in ~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates/ and drag to trash (there is a single ipsw file). (Note, I also trashed my iPhone Software Update file from last night, on the thought there might be a cross-up somewhere - made no difference).
    2) With iPad plugged in, showing "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode" on Mac, and showing Recovery Mode graphic on iPad (USB cable -> iTunes), get iPad into DFU mode as follows:
Hold down iPad Power and Home buttons until iPad disappears from iTunes screen.
Release iPad Power but continue to hold Home until "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode" on Mac, but now with a dark screen on iPad (no USB cable -> iTunes graphic on iPad)
    3) Click Restore in iTunes, then click Restore and Update in the Are you sure… dialog in iTunes, then click Next, then click Agree in iTunes. iTunes shows Downloading 1 item, iPad Software Update (7 minutes remaining).
Note: iPad screen still dark all this time
After the download completes, there is a bunch of activity in iTunes, with messages like (probably didn't capture all these messages):
    extracting software
    verifying ipad restore with apple
    preparing ipad
    waiting for ipad
    preparing ipad software
Eventually a long progress bar shows up on iPad
The progress bar starts to move with messages like this in iTunes (pretty sure I did not capture all the messages here):
    Restoring iPad Software
    Verifying iPad Software
    Verifying iPad Restore
Finally, the iTunes dialog end up like this:
    iPad:
    Restoring iPad firmware…
and the progress bar on the iPad gets very near the end, but not quite. It sits there for maybe a couple of minutes.
Then, in iTunes, this dialog appears:
The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1014).
and on the iPad, the recovery mode dialog appears (USB cable -> iTunes graphic).
I've been around this loop a number of times now.
Not sure where to look for error messages in any log files on my mac.
    Any other ideas?
Thanks for reading. Sad I don't have an iPad anymore...

    greetings.
I just tried to restore my first generation iPad and got the following message:
The iPad could not be restored. Unknown error (40).
has anyone else had this and found a wasy to bring the iPad back to life?
I have tried all the trouble shooting ideas that iTunes led me to... very sad...
    many thanks,

Try and force your iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer only
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times.

  • HT1414 my ipad 2 is in recovery mode but when i start up itunes and press restore itunes stops working and the window closes, what should i do?

my ipad 2 is in recovery mode when i plug it into itunes and my comuter to restore it itunes stops working and the window close, what should i do i really need my ipad if anyone knows how to fix it i would really apreciate the help.

I assume that you mean that the iTunes window closes. Quit iTunes, reboot your PC and try again. The iTunes software might be corrupt and it may require reinstalling iTunes on your computer.

    Hi Abdallah,
According to your description, could you please post the summary and detail logs for further analysis? By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
Usually, the error occurs when the Windows Installer Service is not running or the Windows Installer registry settings are corrupted.  I recommend you reset the Windows Installer Service settings in the registry and restart the Windows Installer Service,
then reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2. For more details, please review this similar

    You may need to connect the iPod in Recovery Mode and then restore it via iTunes.  See this article for instructions on getting your iPod into Recovery Mode.;

  • My iphone 5c wont work after update from ios 7 to ios 8, is on recovery mode but my itunes wont find my device to restore it

I update my iphone 5c ios 7.1.2 (i think) to ios 8.0.2, however when it was intalling it suddently stppoed and my iphone only displayed the itunes icon with the cable plug in in the screen. I searched all over the internet for the solution and it says to turn the device into recovery mode and plug it to itunes so it can restore with ios 8 on it, however my itunes doesnt find my device in any way, i tried updating my itunes my windows everything, but still doesnt work, help please!!

If  your phone is in recovery mode, all data on it are gone.  Certainly before performing a software update, you backed up your data and imported your important photos onto your computer, right?

  • 1st gen touch won't charge with iphone cables...but there's more issues...

so i got an ipod touch off fleabay...tried charging it on the cable i charge my 3gs with, doesn't charge or even recognize it on my computer (nothing happens at all)...as far as i knew any older equipment would work on newer cables...is this incorrect?
to make things more confusing i bought a "first gen" touch data cable...it does nothing...no charge or recognition by computer...only way i've successfully charged the touch is to hook it up to an old speaker system or in my car to my pioneer touchscreen...but this doesn't help with putting any movies/music on it.
googling for hours results in tons of recommendations for getting new "high quality" cables or doing a restore on the ipod...so i did a restore and it's stuck in the "connect to itunes" mode now...but still isn't recognized by either of my computers...
any suggestions are greatly appreciated. i'm about to throw this thing out the window lol

  • HELP! Firmware update failed. iPhone could not be restored Unknown 6

I wanted to upgrade my iPhone's firmware.
Plugin, backup, sync, etc, update downloaded and it began, extracting, preparing iphone, preparing software, then finally restoring iPhone.
IT NEVER FINISHES, I get an error code unknown 6, could not restore iphone.
I repeat, same thing every time.
I uninstall iTunes, even deleted my backup so everything is gone, reinstall, same thing
Created a new user account in windows so that it is forced to redownload the update, guess what, same thing.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and did they resolve it?
    Thank you so much
    Matt

I thought I should chime in even though some of the issues have been addressed.
I downloaded 2.0.1 yesterday evening. The download was relatively fast. The upgrade process began.
I am generally very finicky and always want to watch the progress meter. I have noticed that with Apple products (as Microsoft), the progress meter's generally mean nothing.
… Fast-forward about two hours. I come back to the computer and the upgrade is still doing its thing. It was stuck at the Restoring iPhone Software section. The iPhone became a brick the phone displayed the lovely connect to iTunes graphics.
I decided to kill the session and try again. iTunes began the upgrade yet again, but this time it stalled at the section right before Restoring iPhone Software.
I spent a good four hours working on this thing. I downloaded the latest iTunes hoping that would solve the problem. Again, no success. I also tried deleting the USB driver with no luck.
I went to sleep on the third attempt thinking it is taking its sweet time. I wake up at 3AM or so, and it is again, stuck on the last bar of Restoring iPhone Software meter.
It was at that point I decided to try something different. On a whim, I install iTunes on another computer. I plugged in the iPhone, downloaded the upgrade, and in about 30 minutes the upgrade completed successfully. I actually got a more consistent progress meter on the various updates. The iPhone restarted and iTunes recognized the phone instantly.
I plugged it back into my primary machine, which was giving me trouble, and everything is hunky dory.
*So, if you guys have been trying everything and are going insane, perform the upgrade on another machine.* It solved my problem and three other users’ issues that were having the same problem at work.
