1st generation airport express base station not showing up in network utilities

when i plug it in the amber light appears and sometimes blinks and/or sometimes steady. needless to say my desktop imac is not picking up its signal. what do i need to do to make it work or is it just not compatible with  my new mac?

Your new iMac should not have any issues connecting to the 1st generation AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
When having difficulties accessing the AirPort thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the AirPort wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.

  • AirPort Express Base Station not recognized by Verizon MiFi 4G

I use an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to connect wirelessly to my PC in order to play music from iTunes.  The AX is connected via wire to a sound system.  I have just changed from a Verizon MiFi 3G wi-fi hot spot to a Verizon MiFi 4G wi-fi hot spot.  I was able to use the AX on the Verizon MiFi 3G wi-fi hot spot with no problem.  But when I switched to the Verizon MiFi 4G wi-fi hot spot, I could not get the AX to work.  I used the AirPort Utility to update the AX settings, including changing from WPA to WPA2, and the AirPort Utility reported everything OK (green check mark at end of session), but the Verizon MiFi 4G wi-fi hotspot does not recognize the AX--the indicator light on the AX is blinking orange, not solid green.
Does anyone have any idea why the AX worked with the Verizon MiFi 3G hotspot but not with the Verizon MiFi 4G hotspot?
Is there some kind of workaround or another box to put in the system?
    Thanks.

It say's this on the main Apple Website:
Support for WPA requires Mac OS X v10.3 or later.  Use of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) reduces the maximum number of network users. When joining an existing wireless network, AirPort Express supports only WPA-Personal. WPA2 requires a Mac computer with an AirPort Extreme Card and Mac OS X v10.3 or later.
So it has to be on WPA-Personal.
The Airport Utility should tell you what is wrong with it when it is orange.
Also, is it running on the same channel? For instance, are they both running on channel 1? Are you extending a network, or creating a network?
Hope that brain snap just puts everything together.

  • Airport Base Station not showing up and network disappeared

I only use Airport Express to stream music from iTunes to my stereo speakers.  It had been working just fine until a couple of weeks ago.  Now, it appears that the base station cannot connect to my network, and I can't even find my network.  When I click onto the multiple speakers icon in iTunes, my network is grayed out and italicized.  I don't know if it's been hijacked or what's going on. I've tried to use the AirPort utility, but it simply says that it was unable to find any wireless devices. My base station flashes amber constantly.  When I have tried to use the Airport Utility, it doesn't even see the base station. When I go to Network in System Preferences, it does indicate that Airport is active and connected.  Running OS 10.6.7 on a Mac Pro.  Help.  I hate to crank up the volume on my computer speakers...

BTW, thanks for taking the time to try and help me with this.  I re-connected the Airport Express to the Mac directly with ethernet.  Airport utility sees it fine.  I selected the pane that configures it to use Airplay. iTunes recognizes the base station and all looks good.
The following are the screens that appear regarding the connectivity:
I was under the impression that it creates its own network  to work with Airplay, hence Apple Network 237abb.

  • Airport Utility can no longer see my Airport Express Base Station.

    Hi all the problem I have is as follows;
I've set up my Airport Express Base Station some time ago to print wirelessly from my HP Photosmart C4280 and it was working fine.
However recently when I've gone to print a document, even though the printer is working fine and the Airport Express Base Station is showing a green light nothing happens. I've gone into the Airport Utility and its say's it can't see the Airport Express Base Station (even though it still has a green light showing). If I unplug the Airport Express and plug it in again, the Airport Utility can suddenly see it again.
I've successfully gone through the reset process but after a few minutes the Airport Utility can no longer see the Airport Express Base Station which means I can't print a document wirelessly. I've repeated the reset process several times with the same outcome.
Everything was working fine up until recently, has the Airport Express Base Station developed a fault? or is there something I'm not doing.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're comfortable resetting all settings, unplug it, hold down the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug it back in - keep holding it for another 10-20s until the amber light flashes
Then, open airport utility, now you should be able to see the device either on-screen or in the upper left under 'other wi-fi devices'

  • Airport Express 1st Generation base station not showing up using new Linksys E1500 router.  Compatibility problem?

Airport Utility cannot find base station.  The AirPort Status Icon is showing on my iMac's menu bar, but when I click on it I do not see an AirPort option in the list --- only the various networks that are within range and the options to Create or Join a network.  I have a 1st generation Airport Express (Moded A1264) and recently installed a new router, Linksys E1500.  Could the router be the problem?  Another computer in the house had to be set up on the router using Cisco Connect on my husband's Window's 7 computer.  This was also necessary for our Wii console.  When I try to use Cisco Connect to see if it needs to recognize the AirPort device, it gives me certain wireless settings necessary to connect the device (Network Name (SSID), Security key and Security Type (WPA2 or WAP).    looked on the site but didn't see an option for setting up Airport Express.  I also upgraded from Snow Leopard OS to Lion shortly before adding the new router.  I use the Airport Express to play our Tune music on powered speakers in our kitchen and did not think to see if it was operating between the time I upgraded the operating system and the time I installed a new router.  I have two different versions of AirPort Utility on the computer  6.0 and 5.6.  Any suggestions?

Just spoke with Cisco about the router.  They said the router is compatible with the E1500.  They suggested that I contact Apple to see if their default IP address was that same as the router (192.168.1.1).  They told me I would have to change it if that was the case.  How would I do that?

  • Can you add new AirPort Express Base Station Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n with a 1st Gen time capsule network

    Hi
Has anyone tried using the AirPort Express Base Station with a first generation Time Capsule and used it to extend their network, while still being able to use the Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n on their network?
    Thanks in advance

The first generation Time Capsule was not a simultaneous dual band device.
If you add the "new" AirPort Express to the network and configure it to "Extend a wireless network", it will extend the one single band signal that it is receiving from the Time Capsule.
In other words, the AirPort Express will not extend simultaneous dual bands in this type of setup...since it can only "extend" what it receives. You would need a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule if you want that type of functionality.

  • AirPort Express Base Station 1st gen gets hot, is this normal?

AirPort Express Base Station 1st gen gets hot, is this normal?

question answered, yes large heat sink gets hot.

All AirPorts employ some form of heat sinks to allow heat to dissapate from their surfaces. Running "hot" is typical and not necessarily a sign that something is wrong or faulty with the base station. It is important to allow adequate space around them for proper cooling.

  • Hey, I have a AirPort Express Base Station ( 2nd Generation ), and I wanted to ask that if I join my network at home with the Express Station, will it still run the 2.5 GHz and the 5.0 GHz?

Okay, well I have just bought a AirPort Express Base Station ( 2nd Generation ) and I'm new to it, but I wanted to ask that if it join's a network you have setup at home, will it still run with the 2.4 GHz and the 5.0 GHz.

The AirPort Express will "extend" both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and provide more wireless signal coverage when it is connected to another Apple AirPort router and configured correctly.
The AirPort Express cannot provide more wireless coverage though, if you are trying to connect it to another 3rd party wireless router using wireless only.
It should be possible to set up the Express to provide more signal coverage if you connect it back to the main router using a wired Ethernet connection or using Ethernet powerline adapters.

  • I want to set up my Airport Express Base Station again but do not remember how. Please walk me thru it.

I am trying to hook my Airport Express Base Station up to be a router again and have forgotten how to do this. Before I had it hooked through the modeum and would like to have it that way again but for some reason the process has completely left my memory. I know it has something to do with the little icon on the top of the computer but not what it has to do with it. Because it is not hooked up I am unable to get my printer to work unless I connect to another wireless that I have but do not want to use all of the time since I have to pay for it and do not have  many GB. I am also paying for another that I want to use all of the time (unless necessary to use the other) so It only cost me when I am away from home. Please walk me through the process of hooking the Apple router back up.

All apple routers are setup via Airport Utility.. there is no icon for it in the top menu area.. I think you are confusing the airport network setup (ie the internal wireless card in the Mac) with the airport express setup.. Apple insist on calling everything the same name which makes it more confusing.
Open the airport utility which you find under applications/utilties.
Router setting will depend on what version of the utility you are using.
In version 5 it is under Internet tab and in v6 utility under network. You need to set it to DHCP + NAT.
Download and read the manual for setting up the express if you have forgotten the details.. manuals are always good.. all the manuals are listed at the head of the section. But you are in Time Capsule instead of extreme/express specific area.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
    Manuals link http://support.apple.com/manuals/%23airport
If you want the express as router the modem should be bridged or it should be a pure modem for it to work without Double NAT issues. There is nothing wrong with bridging the Express.. that is not the same as using it in wireless bridge modes.. that is router bridge.
    What modem do you have?
I am at a loss to understand the rest.. why the printer is not part of your own network.. and how setting up the airport this way is important. You need to give us specific details if you need more help.
How exactly is the airport setup now?
How do you connect to the modem?
How is the printer connected? What kind of printer?

  • Steady green light on A1084. Airport Utility 5.6 says set up is complete.   Airport Express base station does not appear in the menu bar, so I cannot select it.  Is there a fix?

Steady green light on A1084. Mac OS X 10.7.5. IMac. Verizon DSL Actiontec GT704-WGB modem. Airport Utility 5.6 says set up is complete.   Airport Express base station does not appear in the menu bar, so I cannot select it and send a signal to airport express to play airtunes through my stereo amplifier.  Is there a fix?

I plugged a model A1034 Airport Extreme Base Station into the Verizon DSL Actiontec GT704-WGB modem with an ethernet cable and now the AirPlay icon appears in the Itunes window immediately to the right of the volume control and I can select it and play Airtunes wirelessly through the A1038 Airport Express Base Station in another room connected to a stereo amplifier by a Monster mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable running from the output jack on the A1034 Airport Express Base Station into the CD jacks on the amp.  The problem is that I have to select the Apple Network Airport Express Base Station as my network in order to select the Airport Express Base Station when I click the AirPlay icon, which means I have no Internet signal to the Imac. If I select the Airport Extreme Base Station or the Verzion modem as my network, then I have an Internet signal to the Imac, but the Airport Express Base Station is grayed out when I click on the AirPlay icon, so I cannot select the Airport Express Base Station and send tunes to the Airport Express.  It would be nice to play Airtunes while simultaneously accessing the Internet.  I don't understand your question about what program I am using for which I require AirPlay.  I am not learned about computers in general, and even less so about Macs than PCs.  I thought the program I was running was Itunes, and there was no separate program to run to use AirPlay for the purpose of sending a signal from the Itunes on the Imac to the A1084 Airport Express base station in a another room, and then out as described above to the stereo amplifier to listen to Itunes music remotely in the other room, without any kind of cable, wire, etc., connecting the Imac to the stereo amplifier.  I would guess that the most common use for the A1084 is to play Itunes through a stereo in another room without the need to run wires from the computer to the stereo.  I realize it would be easy simply to run a very long mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable across the floor connecting the Imac to the amp without the need to use AirTunes, Airplay or any kind of AirPort, but it would be both unsightly and a tripping hazard.

  • Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, BT have checked and improved line still not working?

Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, other users are on ipads and BT have checked and improved line but I still have an intermittent/no connection?

You must tell us the whole setup.. what is the main router?? How are the express connected to each other?
On ipad it works ok?? But you are on a computer?? MBP early 2011 running Lion?? That doesn't work.. even if you are right next to the main router??
Plugged in by ethernet does it work??
Have you installed a wireless diagnostic program.. ?? Actually Lion has one installed but hidden I believe.
Later version bought it to the surface.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
If you do run Lion please install the 5.6 airport utility as it will give you loads more info on how the units are connected.. and link speeds for extend wireless.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Airport Utility not seeing Airport Express base station

Since I got access to cable internet a few days ago, I've been using my Airport Express base station with no problems on my MacBook. Today I tried to set up my roommate's PC (she has Vista, if that matters) so she can get online. So we downloaded the AE Utility for Windows, then reset both the modem and the AE base about two times, but her computer won't see the Express base at all when it scans.
Any ideas? Do we need to go into her Network preferences on the Control Panel or something? I've been through the manual but it wasn't much help. Sorry this is such a basic question, thanks for all helpful suggestions!

    You had everything working properly.
There was no need for her to have Airport Utility on her computer as the Airport Base station was already set up.
Set your system up the way it was and then on her computer, just have her join the network.
Do not use Airport Utility for anything on her computer.

  • Airport express bases station no longer visible after W7 upgrade

Hi - I just upgraded my Dell Inspirion 530 to Windows 7 Ultimate.   Since doing so, I can no longer "see" my Airport Express Base Station (1st generation).   It is not visible via Airport Express Utility (5.5.3), nor as a connected device through Devices and Printers.   I believe there may be a firewall or network security (Symantec anti virus) setting that I need to configure, but do not know where to start.   The device worked fine in my Windows Vista configuration prior to upgrading, so I am confident that it is not a Express device issue.  The device shows Green, indicating that it is working properly.    Help appreciated!!!

do you still ahve signal!! i mean are you able to find the signal when you try to connect to it and use the internet?
if you are able to connect to the intenet on the same machine, did you try updating the untility software?

  • 1st generation AirPort Express - no software

I'm still using a 1st generation AirPort Express ... there's nothing wrong with it, it's still doing its job just as good as when it was new.
    But there's a big problem.
The latest AirPort Utility (6.x) doesn't support this device, so I can't go in to re-configure it, even though it's still connecting everything fine.
I can't even download the last utility that supported the device either, because it's not supported under my latest OS, which is Yosemite.
(AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion)
Any advice, besides buying a new AirPort? It's crazy to have to buy a new basestation just because it's a few years old and the only utility on your computer can't simply talk to it.

    Why would you say that?
    Because it is correct.
The model number is A1084, which is 1st generation
No, it is not, according to Apple.  A 1st Generation AirPort Express is model number A1264. Apple began to use the Generation naming with the introduction of wireless "n" products in 2008.
Hopefully, the screenshot to illustrate that will appear below, but Apple is having problems with screenshots on the forums displaying correctly. If he screenshot does not display, let us know and I will post some links for you.
A1084 is a much older wireless "b/g" version of the Express, which was sold long before Apple began to use Generation naming on the AirPorts.
The A1084 was introduced in June 2004 and discontinued in March 2006.
I have AirPort Utility 6.3.4, and when I click on my A1084 base station, a message pops up that says "This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station."
Correct.  AirPort Utility 6.3.x introduced in Lion, and carried into Mountain Lion, Mavericks and now Yosemite does NOT support the older "b/g" versions of the Apple Airport routers.
If you want to be able to administer the older 10 year old AirPort that you have, I gave you the information needed above. It is repeated again here........
You can use, or borrow,  a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the computer to administer the old AirPort Express.
Yes, the model I have is at least 8 years old. It's about 10, but it still works perfectly fine ...
That is great. You can still use it if you follow the instructions that I provided above.
But, any version of AirPort Utility 6.x cannot be used to administer the A1084 version.

  • Can I use an Airport Express Base Station to extend non-Apple router range?

We have a Netgear 802.11n router in our house. I just bought a MacBook Pro and now am accessing out wifi from the other end of the house along with my iPod Touch 4g. Both seem to show at best about half strength signal strength. House is small and nearly all devices on same floor.
Can I use the Apple Airport Express Base Station as a bridge to extend our wifi network giving me stronger signal for my Apple devices or will it only work with Apple routers? Netgear and others like Hawking make wifi range extenders and those are still under consideration.

It would be extremely unlikely that an AirPort Express would "extend" the wireless network produced by the Netgear router using wireless only. Apple's "extend" feature appears to be proprietary among Apple "n" routers. As far as we know, it does not work with any other manufacturer's products for the purpose of wireless only extension.
If you are planning to connect the AirPort Express to the Netgear using an ethernet connection, then it could be configured to extend that way.

This drove me nuts for well over a year. I guess this is a "tip" of sorts for dual monitor users who recently switched from CS3 to CS4 and expect files to open on the 2nd monitor. With the advent of CS4, the ability to automatically open a few dozen
